I know you don't like it but they've sold over 100K of them world wide and since they are built solely in Spartunburg, it keeps a US plant humming.
But these things weigh so much that 400 lbs isn't that big a hit. Not that it's a good thing, of course.
I see them now and then (saw one this morning even), but not too often.
I have no idea but let's say the gross profit on each X6 was $5K. Selling 100,000 units equals $500 million in gross profit in the past 4 years.

Also this wiki page shows US sales through 2010:

So far I've seen a grand total of ONE on the roads.
2001 BMW 330ci/E46, 2008 BMW 335i conv/E93
Sixt will buy anything; they used to have a fleet of Hummers ready and waiting outside the Munich airport.
25 NX 450h+ / 24 Sienna Plat AWD / 23 Civic Type-R / 21 Boxster GTS 4.0
Sixt is my favorite there, never received anything but a nice car and their cars tend to be highly equipped. Rates are competitive too, not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.
True but for an oddball derivative, it's not bad. It's not like they had to engineer a whole new car - I believe it's built off the X5 so major development costs were already made.
Lucky you.
Remember that the X6 came out with turbo engines before the X5 got them, so in order to get the upgrade engine you were forced into an X6 for the first year or two.
Now the X5 offers the upgraded engines, and I bet X6 sales drop.
I think the better engines artificially increased X6 sales.
I don't know how much they cannibalized X5 sales though, or if the average buyer of either knows or cares about engines. There is something very ostentatious and brash about the X6 that appeals to some, IMO. X5 is much more conservative. X6 is reaching the paragon of douchemobile.
What engine does that get? Curious, lemme look...
Yep, EcoBoost V6.
These are rare, at least around here. I remember seeing one close when I was in Miami for spring break 2010, Lincoln was sponsoring an art show at the Convention Center there. I remember how huge it was inside. Cross your legs in the back seat huge.
You know fin - you need to lighten up. I'll bet if you went an attended a couple of artsy events targeted at the noveau riche, you're whole outlook at life would change!
BTW, I've seen 3 X6's in the past 2 days. Now I'll need to keep my eyes out for the X4:

Cars like the 300C are already reversing that trend and offering green houses that you can actually see out of.
You really think the 300C has a large greenhouse?? IMHO, it's looks small.
Is the X6 not an ostentatious poser object aimed at those with more dollars than sense?
If I attended that artsy event, I would celebrate my own humanity a little more...
No you're not offending me but you seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder about people who can afford things you don't like. Or is it a case of the fintail doth protest too much?
Is the X6 not an ostentatious poser object aimed at those with more dollars than sense?
As with about 50% of all cars out there IMHO. The X6 may not be your cup of tea but someone out there is willing to spend the money on it because they like it. Does it really matter to you what other people spend their dollars on?
BTW - don't you drive some sort of older German car? Couldn't someone has said the same thing about it at one time?
50% of the cars ostentatious poser objects? Nah. IMO, 90% of cars are some variation of a toaster or refrigerator. But other than a tacky spoiler or oversized wheels, most don't put on a show. People are free to buy what they like, and I am free to opine about said purchases, and they are free to opine about mine.
I have two German cars - the modern car was a low production sleeper when new, not advertising its prowess...and the old car was a weirdo left field choice mostly for tech geeks.
On the thread topic, I saw an extremely loaded looking Optima today, still on temp registration. The fact that such cars exist, when compared to the invisible old Optima, shows how much of a jump the new car is.
Funny thing is, we pretty much ran in to it by accident.
It was a rainy Miami day (flash flooding everywhere) and we were looking for a bus terminal. We went in for shelter, and voila, free art show.
No idea Lincoln's demographics include "weird art show enthusiasts". One display had a house made out of old luggage. Looked like a PanAm pile up.
Nah it doesn't offend me in the least.
If I was making fun of a cheapo car or a skinflint owner, would it be so bad?
IMHO, it would be just as bad.
50% of the cars ostentatious poser objects? Nah. IMO, 90% of cars are some variation of a toaster or refrigerator.
Perhaps 90% of the cars on the road are pedestrian but IMHO at least 50% of the models offered could be considered poseur objects. Any BMW/MB/Audi/Cadillac/et al SUV/CUV could fall into this category. The M/AMG/R/V nameplates are pretty much all bought to be look at me cars. King Ranch and Denali variants will never see the duty their underlying structure was designed for. Most hybrids, electrics and even diesels are bought for their smugness. Heck, my new Explorer could be considered a poseur - it screams "I've been driving a minivan for 10 years and am sick of it." My wife will readily admit it.
IMO, outside of Camcords, stripped F150's and minivans all vehicles are bought for their ability to convey an image we want to have.
People are free to buy what they like, and I am free to opine about said purchases, and they are free to opine about mine.
That' fine. I just wish you would lay off the douchebagerry phrases. You seem like a pretty smart person - your words sometimes lend themselves to a "better than thou" image.
No harm intended and no foul received.
As for what I spotted this morning - Ford F150 HD Edition.
It's a Paradox: the anti-snob badge snob.
I don't think 50% of the cars sold are useless highline SUV/CUV and prestige cars. Camcords and Civrollas are the majority (well, I guess we can throw Elantnatas into that too), and they don't offend at all - they are just transportation pods. Even soft roaders of the same ilk, no reaction. I don't see the Explorer as really being a poser, it's just a family bus. But I live in an area where there are plenty of trust fund/satellite children [non-permissible content removed] tooling around (that works on a few levels :P ) in new M3s, X6s, and so on. I call it as I see it. And as the socio-economic chasm continues to divide, the ostentation will only become louder.
I'm in economically depressed podunk right now, so any car built after Dubya came into office is a "new" car here.
Had a middle age guy and (I presume) his wife (same age, no trophy!).
Neat car, and I got a laugh when it pulled in behind us when we stopped at dunkin donuts; we went inside, he got on the drive through line. Just a weird thing to see.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Kids just about freaked out - they loved it. I told them to stay in school if they ever hope to afford one.
Also spotted a gorgeous new SLK, man that thing looks good... It has now bumped itself up to my new favorite roadster in the class ahead of the new Z3.
Then there is the usual flock of new Sonatas and Optimas, but I spotted both in hybrid form (2 Sonatas actually) last night.
Also the 500 is wildly popular where I live, those things are all over the place as well, might even be more popular than the new JGC by now...
Lastly, not a new car, but a nice "Carbeque" engulfed the front end of a late model Pontiac Bonneville SSEi that held up traffic for miles. Most likely the supercharger recall from 2008...
I think they just wanted a different roof color a-la MINI or Ford Flex.
Of course, a Korean maker couldn't be putting on false pretenses
I've seen pretty good painted imitations.
I have seen faux pano treatments on all kinds of W210s and W211s, W220s, and on more than on one A6 and old A8 as well...hey, an Audi, what a coincidence.
What's next?
