Ford did it for the last generation Expedition, so now they are more than a full generation behind in this regard.

GM won't make a comeback by holding back and making conservative updates.

Exactly right and ford used Land Rover IRS technology to do it so most of the development cost was already paid. The double upside to it was the BMW owned Land Rover when the new Range Rover IRS design was created and Ford bought the company after the design was pretty much finished but before it went into production. Pretty good deal for them.

To design a good IRS suspension that will be fine for towing is very expensive.

Which is why they should have simply borrowed the Holden IRS setup, which is perfectly good for light and medium towing. Heavy-duty towing could have been met with a live-axle Suburban. Dolts.

Probably why they are going under.

You know about five or six years ago I was talking with a bunch of the techs that I worked with at the time and the consensus was that if any of the domestic automakers were going to go down Ford would be the one. Who would have thought that now Ford is probably doing the best of the three.

Dunno, I'd argue that Chrysler is in the best position right now, given the success of the 300C. Ford is 2nd, GM has the biggest problems.

    Just my opinion.

I think if you just count chrysler by itself then yes they are doing best but if you include the mercedes half of chrysler they are not doing well at all. Mercedes is in so so shape.

All of Fords Divisions are doing ok except for Jaguar and Jaguar is not that large at all in terms of volume.

...gold Ford Five Hundred, white Mustang, and white Chevrolet Impala. That Impala actually looks pretty nice in white.
  • anythngbutgmanythngbutgm Member Posts: 4,277
I'd agree. Maybe they'll both get their just do's and grab the top spots, knocking GM back where it belongs (had it not bought the market with mega-incentives...)

Things are on the upswing, if these two continue to innovate and improve, they may just be able to hold ground against the ever increasing threat from Toyota.

BTW, speaking of Yota, the RAV4 is becoming ridiculously popular around here. I've seen dozens of them already. Can't tell the difference between the last gen and this one other than size though...

always seems to have been the biggest "swinger" of the 3 (that is, yo yoing between boom and bust). Wouldn't surprise me if the hit the skids again once the 300C faded out, as most high style cars usually do. For them to stay healthy, they need to expand the line and keep things fresh.

That may depend on how the Caliber does. It's probably too early to get any preliminary read. Also, the success of the redesigned minivans may be very important.

Saw a new S-class today, in that desert silver color.
  • gussguss Member Posts: 1,167
in beige. Of course it looks a bit like a wide Trailblazer. It was parked in the Doctors/Nurses lot at the hospital.

I think I like the old style better.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
    black Bentley Arnage.

And on the other side of the price scale, a blue Honda Civic, my first one. I like the old one better.

Lol I dont know why everyone hates the new Tahoe design. It looks much sharper and better. The old one looks sooo dated, which it is. I see like 15 of them per day so to me that design is old and redundant.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...but what happened to all the colors?

    Spotted:

    Silver-gray Mercury Montego
    Silver-gray Ford Five Hundred
    Silver-gray Dodge Magnum
    Silver Dodge Charger
    White Hino box truck

    I feel like I'm in a black & white movie auto-wise.

People are boring and only whte silver/gray/black vehicles a lot of times.

I had a Supercharged Range ROver Sport on the lot for about two months that I could have sold 4 times over if it was silver or black. But noooooooooooooo it was a nice blue and everyone was afraid of it.
  • rockyleerockylee Member Posts: 14,017
Why would someone be afraid of a blue Range Rover Sport :confuse: It by far looks better than the Silver. However the Orange one is Sweeeetest of em all.

It was carins blue which is a gorgeous color and we have sold several Non supercharged Range Rover Sports in that color. We figured it would be good to order a supercharged sport in that color too.

What we found out is that the market for the Supercharged Sport is very very conservative. The only two colors anyone wants is Silver and Black. We tryed swapping that car for Silver and Black SC Sports for people and no one wanted it. Everyone was afraid of the car even though it looked great.

We did finaly swap it out for a boring silver one because someone half way across the country wanted that particular color Supercharged Sport. We had the only one in the whole country so we were able to get a silver one in return to sell to someone who had already put a deposit down. As far as I know only a couple of Supercharged Sports have been ordered in that color.

Back on topic. I saw the first new eciplse the other day. Looked good and was also in a very slick blue color. Still won't be a real eclipse till it has AWD again.

  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Coolest thing I ever saw on a carrier was a bunch of new Checker taxicabs headed east on I-80 toward NYC.

Anyway I spotted a new Hyundai Sonata and Dodge Durango.
  • rockyleerockylee Member Posts: 14,017
I spotted a couple of cattle down the road since I haven't been out of the house in 3 days ;)

I stayed in a hotel in Edison NJ last night because of work. About half the parking lot were new Impalas. I guess that they must be selling a load of them to rental fleets
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...I spotted a new Impala at lunchtime today. It was sort of a purplish blue. Sorry, no little "e" sticker!
  • jcat707jcat707 Member Posts: 169
I see plenty of Impalas around here and 95% of the time, they are rentals. They either have the little green and white "e" sticker or a white bar code label in the rear window.

Speaking of rental cars, yesterday I saw a Jetta with Canada plates and it had Enterprise bumper sticker instead of the usual small e. Maybe it's a Canadian thing.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
Yesterday I saw a chrome wheeled G6 with a barcode. They are pretty discreet.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,675
Are barcodes used on lease cars?

I saw my first Solstice yesterday. It's a sharp little car. The one that I saw was a little too red, but looked classy with the tan-ish top. I'm not crazy about the two Batman-ey humps on the trunk lid. They look useless when the top is up. I suppose that they help the appearance when the top is down.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
Today is the first truly nice day on Long Island in what feels like 5 years or so. The convertibles and bikes are really out. The one car that really stood out was a sweet black C6 Corvette with the top down. It had really sharp polished factory wheels. That car was really something.
  • ubbermotorubbermotor Member Posts: 307
Almost missed it. It was silver, and didn't stand out as much as I thought it would. Still not sure about the look, need to see one in color.
  • natenj1971natenj1971 Member Posts: 174
I saw a red Solstice yesterday too - in Newburgh NY. The guy had the top down and looked like he was stuffed in their pretty tight - top of his head was over the top of the windshield.
  • natenj1971natenj1971 Member Posts: 174
Saw a smart car driving south on NY State Thruway between New Paltz and Newburgh exit. Maybe coming from Canada? That's the only place I've seen a smart car.
  • teds1teds1 Member Posts: 180
I also saw a new Solstice yesterday in NYC. I have seen them before and I agree, they look weird with the top up and very small. I am 5' 10" and it would have been a squeeze for me to fit in there with the top up. The Sky looks better and I would still take an S2000 over these cars any day. S2000s are like the forgotten sports cars, you never hear of them any more though they are still pretty competitive for the segment even though they are discontinued. The prices have held up well. I also saw an NSX, Continental GT, Arnage, Every generation of M3, and a Viper Srt-10 walking around in the village Saturday

saw it yesterday while picking up someone at the airport. Pretty neat, leaving the arrival terminal and having the first car you see a Ferrari.

Saw a couple new Tahoes this weekend, and a Bentley GT
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,675
I saw a Lincoln Mark LT this evening. Had to look it up to figure out what it is. Tooooo big!

a beige Honda Civic, my second. I dont like the redesign at all, but apparently many do because they keep selling so well.

...nice yellow Cobalt coupe. Love those taillights! The Impala would look good with three Cobalt coupe taillights on each side.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,675
Love the taillights. The Impala would be great with them too. They probably would have been ridiculed to death by a couple of folks for having something 'old.'

I saw not one but two Gallardos today, a yellow one and a blue one.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...spotted two new Corvettes - one in yellow and the other a sort of bronzish color.

I saw a yellow Gallardo a few months ago near my house.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
Rolls Royce Phantom, in white! It was coming on the other side of the road so I only caught a quick glimpse, but what a car!

Also saw a grey Range Rover Sport and a beige H3.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
    ...white Buick Lucerne CXS. NICE!!!
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...Buick Lucerne - a maroon one this time. Couldn't tell what series as I only saw the front end.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I've seen a few of these also, and they look good. Elegant, basically. Not my cup of tea, but not a bad looking car.

I have yet to see one on the street, but I saw that an area dealer is selling them at a $3000 markdown. This was an automatic, a/c car for $12,999. This thing is getting marked down faster than the Chevy SSR was when it came out. Maybe America doesn't want a mini-magnum?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
In the Caliber thread people are reporting buying them up pretty quickly, so maybe it's a regional thing. I think there is a $500 incentive already, but Dodge prices their cars with incentives built-in.
