saw that one at the Phila car show. Yuck. I would like to see the Nissan Versa though, that looked neat up on the stand.

I just can't handle a center instrument pod, unless you want to give me a free Z8, in which case I will live with it.

The Versa also gets a 6 speed manual and more conventional guages. That's the one I'd want in that segment.

Two... in the last two days.. Distinctive from the front view... I really like them.. Of course, I've liked all of them..

Saw Mazda5 commercials during March Madness... first time that I've seen them advertised...

two Nissan Tiidas (Versas) hatchbacks in bright green and blue. I really like the styling, better than the Yaris.

...black BMW 525i, yellow Corvette convertible, and blue Corvette convertible.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Is the Versa out already? I didn't think it would arrive so soon.

I have seen a new Yaris, and the Fit is supposed to come in April. Looks like these are coming all at once!

They're all coming at once and what are the domestics countering with? The Calibur which looks downright silly. You think that they're going to miss the boat again?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Caliber is a bit bigger and will probably be one price segment up from those.

I think those will compete with the Aveo, Accent, xA, smaller cars like that.

"I think those will compete with the Aveo, Accent, xA, smaller cars like that."

Exactly... they're missing the boat again. The only thing that the domestics will offer in the segment is the Aveo which is not going to be nearly as sporty or stylish.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Maybe, but the Aveo sells well, isn't it the current segment sales leader?

Plus GM builds those for next to nothing probably, in Korea.

There are rumors of Dodge bringing the Hornet concept to production in 2008 and Ford might have a Fiesta ready by then.

Until then the only domestic will be the Caliber, which is a pretty strong contender.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I really liked the Hornet. Maybe delete the suidice doors, but it has a lot of potential. If they built an SRT-4 version I could see it going up against the Mini Cooper S.

  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Naah, the Caliber is a HHR or Toyota Matrix-sized thing. The domestics have squat on deck for the subcompact market except the rebodied Aveo sedan, which bombed its Euro crash tests.
  • ubbermotorubbermotor Member Posts: 307
Keep in mind that the Caliber is supposed to be up market of these cars, which makes room for the possibility of the Hornet making it to production.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,341
you would think that Ford could get one of their (nice I think) Euro models over here without too much trouble. Or maybe not, considering they can't get the new Focus here!

Actually, if Ford could get a nice Fiesta-ish car in the US, they could justify the C1 platform Focus replacement, since it wouldn't have to cover the real cheapo bottom end.

I'm sure they'll be watching the Yaris/Fit/Versa class closely.

  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
So they'll watch it very closely and then react to it when it's too late. If a car isn't in the pipeline yet, when could a competitor possible see the light of day?

The market is ready for these cars and they're giving the imports a huge head start.... AGAIN.

With the nice weather coming around here in N.E. people are starting to drag out the convertibles and bikes. Driving home yesterday, I spotted a couple of SL500's, Boxsters, S2k's (Woohoo) and my first Saturn Sky. It was silver like the ones that have been making their way around the auto show curcuit.

Looks kinda cool, like a squashed mini XLR. Something about the huge rubber makes it look awkward, with such a pancaked body it looks like it was dropped on the chassis of a monster truck... Haven't seen any new Miata's yet and only 2 Solstice's including a really cool Forest Green one (NICE COLOR!)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They haven't ever been able to make a profit in those segments, so they may not want to even try.

Interesting, C&D just came out with a timely comparo, and they liked the Fit and the Versa. Caliber was in the same comparo and scored poorly. Even though it's a lot longer, it's not nearly as space efficient and the Versa was actually a lot roomier, they said.

  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
I've seen three or four new Miatas around (the hood doesn't reach all the way to the headlights, kinda like the NX), but none of the GM twins. That's probably not a good sign.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,341
I found the Caliber to be surprisingly roomy when i sat in it. I would have no problem with the interior size if I had one.

So, if the Versa is roomier, that is going to be an awesome package, especially since it will come with a 6 speed stick!

Might just make me sorry I bought the Accord in December instead of waiting.

Oh well, time for a stop in the CCBA forum.

When I'm looking at purchasing a new vehicle (like I am now) I always watch to see how many of the particular veihicle I see running around.

My current list of replacement vehicles for my '01 Escape XLT are; (not in any order)
    1. '06 Scion xB
    2. '06 Mazda MPV LX
    3. '06 Mazda 5 Tourer
    4. '06 Saturn Vue Redline
    5. '06 Ford Freestyle SEL
    6. '06 Pontiac SV6
    7. '06 Pontiac Torrent

Out of all the cars, I very rarely see the xB's. The xB is actually high up on the list of replacements because of both price and MPG's. As for all the other they are everywhere. One other thing is if there are not that many xB's out on the road mine would standout a little bit.

a new one. Looks better than the 5 or 7 IMO. Real sharp looking.

Toyota Yaris, two of them in white and red.

    Also a black RAV4.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Saw a RAV4 this morning also.

Odie - MPV is discontinued I think. $4000 rebate right now, just hurry if you want any kind of selection.

New Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser or whatever they are calling that thing. It was in yellow looked pretty good.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
The MPV is indeed being discontinued to make room for the Mazda CX-9, which will be larger than the CX-7 with a third row. It will also use the 3.5L V6 from Ford.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
MPV is dirt cheap right now, though, if you like 'em. I always have, but keep in mind the 3rd row does not split fold, so it's a 4 seater or a 7 seater, nothing between.

From your list, you can probably narrow it down by determining if you need seating for more than 5, since that will eliminate some of them.
  • gussguss Member Posts: 1,167
Hybrid, with the funky streamlined wheels. Unfortunately it was at the body shop with a crushed front end.

Hypothetical question, where does that braking energy go if you don't use it to STOP!
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
It's got to be the worst thing to bang up your car when it's new. That's a sure when to take off the newness and never get it back.

When I take my train in from Long Island to NYC, we pass by many body shops and I've noted the following cars sitting in the lots in various states of disrepair:
    05/6 Altima (3/4 nose)
    06 Vette (complete nose)
    06 Accord (rear clip)
06 DTS (complete nose - probably totaled)
    06 Passat (t boned)
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...two Cobalt coupes - one blue, the other red. Also spotted new Honda Civic in a bronzish color. This is the first one I've seen since last fall. I guess they're not selling too well around here. Did anybody catch the new "South Park" about the hybrid cars?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,341
it goes out as heat. Ever see how hot the rotors can get if you have to ride the brakes down a long steep hill? Also the reason you get brake "fade"

Saw a black one on Canal Road today. Looks better in dark colors, the grille stands out less.

The 07 will get black inserts (instead of chrome) so it should look even better in black.

You've gotta be crazy to pick a black car, though, they look dirty 5 seconds after you wash them.

I saw another pig-snout Camry this morning. I'm not liking this thing, it seems such base design. Which means it will probably be a hit.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
3 Grand Vitaras, two silvers and one beige. 2 Mercedes S Class, in white and maroon. Also a blue Passat, black Range Rover Sport, black Bentley Continental GT with the optional factory chrome wheels.

Also four H3s, in black, yellow and beige. The fourth one was also yellow, but the entire body was, including the bumpers while the other had black bumpers. The all yellow H3 reminded me of a school bus!

Best of all, I saw a golden yellow Toyota Supra tuner with full body kit, huge rear wing, hood scoop. Make it orange and it would look like the one Paul Walker had in Fast and the Furious.

Look up the defnition of No Soul in the dictionary and you see toyota.

Great cars from a technical stand point but just beyond boring. Even Hondas, well Acuras really, have more soul then Toyotas.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
I think I'd take the Accord anyway, and certainly something like a TSX over a Camry.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Out today for lunch, spotted:

    2 Uplanders (fleet, though)
    Jetta
    Ridgeline
    R class
    Outback Sport
    SLK350
    A6

  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
I am seeing a number of Grand Vitaras around. They look good for what they are. Weird thing is, I have no idea where the Suzuki dealer may be by me and I can name every other manufacturer's local dealer off the top of my head.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
I was told by the local Mazda / Toyota / Scion dealer that I am able to order a MPV up until May 20th. After that they are in a holding pattern to find out if they will be allocated any orders between May 20th and May 31st (End of run).

I saw the New Toyota FJ at the dealer today (Silver with Black Roof) and it looked awesome. And the new CX-9 will start at $35k, the CX-7 is starting about $29k.

    Odie
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Actually the CX7 starts in the $24k range, but that's FWD. AWD starts around $27k IIRC.

Most will end up close too $30k optioned up.

Where are these lots? I take the Ronkonkoma line into work, maybe I can see some of them.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
Prosa, I'm on the Babylon line so we take a slow ride up Sunrise Hwy. Did you ever notice that one shop just East of Jamaica that has a Model T type car sitting on the roof? That's pretty weird.
  • prosaprosa Member Posts: 280
You're right, you can see many auto-related businesses from the Babylon line - including, as far as I can tell, dealerships for just about every car brand except the real super-exotics.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
two Hummer H3s, in red and black, as well as a dark blue Lexus GS300 and a grey Suzuki Grand Vitara.

I saw a new 07 Camry. It was black and looked alot better in person than it has in pictures.

...a Maybach 57 followed by two Mercedes S550s as chase cars. Was there some visiting dignitary or celebrity in Philly today?
