teds1, where was the car show? Is it a regular thing? I went to the Bellmore train station last Friday and it was quite impressive. There had to be 100 hundred cars that were worth a glance.

I've seen a couple of these lately, they're becoming common.

    Silver Tribeca yesterday, as well.

The CX7 I saw at Costco is not yet sold. I found out the dealer stores cars there.

It was a local thing in Mattituck on the North Fork put on by the lion's Club. There are usually 3-4 a summer like it out there
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
Cool. Mattituck is one of the towns that I've never been to (as far as I know). Can I lure the wife there under the guise of it being a nice village to visit?

I saw my first Honda Fit the other day. Looks like a minivan that was left in the dryer too long. Can you say "Honey, I shrunk the minivan?"

Also saw a Mazda CX7 with dealer tags. Looks pretty decent until you see the back end and those ugly clear taillights! Look how Lexus messed up the RX with clear taillights, although the RX is just an ugly beast all around anyway.

Drove into the city today but didn't see anything that remarkable. Quite a few Priuses though, I think the city council owns a few.

On the way back, I saw a BMW X3 and I remembered how much I didn't like them. It's weird, I can't stand the X3, but I love the X5.

Our Taiwan-sourced facelifted Ford Escape has a really nice new interior, I noticed when I was on the net last night. Same console and dashboard (and same ugly circa 1995 Ford Probe steering wheel), but nice woodtrim, lights etc. It's weird, though, that over in the US the Tribute doesn't sell very well (correct me if I'm wrong) but over here it sells much better than the Ford Escape. But then, Mazda is enormously popular down under - often Number 4 in manufacturer overall sales, which is quite an achievement.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
Comparing the X5 to the X3, there are obvious signs of cost cutting that make it look really chintzy next to the X5. Those flat black bumpers don't even belong on a Suzuki.

Saw a silver Acura RDX in traffic trying to get into NYC from the NJ turnpike this morning. Thought it was a subaru or mitsubishi outlander at first but it was indeed the RDX. The guy driving looked 900 years old.
It looks really tiny. Like Pinto Station wagon tiny.

I saw a new DTS today....double line redline tires, big (19 or 20) chromes, and a vinyl top. Cadillac, Cadillac, Cadillac style...
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Blame the owner, not Cadillac, for such tacky add-on trash. People who do stuff like that to their Caddies should have them confiscated and made to drive '86 Hyundai Excels.

Anyway, I spotted a gray Jaguar XK and a black VW Phaeton.

A silver Lucerne CXS, what looked like a ZR-1, and on my way home I saw a white brand new Camry.

I saw my first one yesterday. It's a closer relative of the Toureg than I thought. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they look very similar.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The Q7 has a longer wheelbase, it's lower and longer, more car-like basically. I'm not sure if it gets all the off-road stuff that the Touareg gets, either.

I prefer the Q7. I'm not taking a $40k+ vehicle off road any time soon, and it has more room inside.

There's gotta be something Caddy can do about dealers defacing the cars
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
They share a platform from what I remember just like the Cayenne. I have seen a couple and I think they look like big whales espesialy in white.

I am sure we will get one in trade before the end of the year. Will be interesting to see how they drive.

The R-Class we took in trade drove like crap.

Yesterday I saw some seriously rare cars including one I know was one of a kind.
First at lunch I saw a black Lambo Gallardo Spyder on a flatbed going down 3rd avenue... Someone is getting a very nice delivery.

Then I saw a 356 speedster Porsche kind of blinged out, coudn't tell if it was a kit or not but it sounded great

Finally the weirdest of all was Wyclef Jean's White G-class Maybach... That is not a mistake, a while back I read in one of those DUBesque magazines that the Haitian singer had installed a maybach like interior in a white G500 down to the logo on the grill and seats. It still looked like a Gelandewagen but with no external trim, a different and a satelite dish. Really odd and kind of ugly for a guy who has the taste to collect Zondas and the almighty F1 McLaren. Wyclef was not driving it and was not in the car.
  • chuck1959chuck1959 Member Posts: 654
Why should they? At least there are buyers for these cars they are "defacing".
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
But at what expense to the image of the company?

Of course, the damage is already done.
  • chuck1959chuck1959 Member Posts: 654
    Good point.
  • teds1teds1 Member Posts: 180
I can not believe that I saw my third Gallardo spyder yesterday and second in two days. I usually average a Lambo every three years or so in NYC because the streets tend to tear the bottoms off them and they are pretty rare anyway. Now I've seen three in two months (white black and yellow) Maybe there was an event or something and I just lucked out seeing all the arrivals. They sometimes drive exhibition cars down to the city rather than flat bed them.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
As much as they'd like to control that, they really can't. These are cash cows for dealers, I'm sure the markups are enough that they make more profit from these add-ons than they do from selling the car (none nowadays).

Dealers are also independently owned and operated. At most GM could try to limit the supply, but that hurts dealer relations.

Maybe GM could just publicly bash or start a campaign against such nonsense. I am sure many potential customers have shook their heads at these cars, thinking the modernization of the brand is incomplete.

If I wanted that look, I'd buy a concours quality 75-76 or even a 77-78 Fleetwood and save 30 grand.

"I am sure many potential customers have shook their heads at these cars, thinking the modernization of the brand is incomplete."

I don't know about that, it seems to me most people realize that this is not how the cars come these days or are supposed to look. People still buy civics after seeing them with tacky aftermarket wings and bolt on kits. GM can't really control the aftermarket and in fact should embrace certain aspects of it. The demand for landau tops will die out naturally very soon and it will be a non issue but I don't think it is detering other potential customers of Caddy's and the like.
The bigger issue IMO is that they have painted themselves into a corner with the love it or hate it styling. There is always going to be a % of the vehicle buying public who just doesn't like the look.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
Well, most pimped Civics aren't current model year, at least not around here. They also aren't trying to be prestige cars.

You're right about the styling though...I don't see the edgy for the sake of edgy look really being a hit. Different, yes, at a time when the brand needed a change. But nobody is copying it, and Caddy will end up abandoning it.

The newly facelifted Saab 9-5. It doesn't look as bad as I thought it would in real life. You can tell the design is old though because of the long, flat hood and longish front overhang. Talk about cosmetic surgery, every body panel has been played with in search of a youthful appearance.

Saw my first 4 door Rabbit (don't say Golf!) on the streets yesterday. Not bad, but what took so long? It's been in europe for years.

A 2000'(s)PBR Dodge Dulley pulling a trailer full of bulls. I think the driver was a professional Bull Rider and he had 2 trucks ahead of him with Rodeo gear and Bulls in front of him also. If my memory is working right the guys last name was Sims.

I spotted a distinct rarity in the driveway of a house not far from me, a silver 9-2x Aero. I thought at first it was an Outback Sport WRX model but then saw the Saab name on the rear. Of course it would've been immediately apparent had I been able to see the front instead of just the side and rear.

There also was a blue '06 Legacy in the driveway. Assuming both vehicles belonged to the same household the choice of the Saabaru instead of a WRX was sort of odd. After all the people must like Subarus, why not just go for the less-expensive WRX?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Depends upon the timing. Last summer you could get a 9-2x Aero for $19.4k with employee pricing, and Saab tosses in 2 free years of service (though you give up the roof rack). That's cheaper than any WRX.

Even now I think you can get 6 years 0%.

sage green rabbit going into the lincoln tunnel. Was a 4door. First one I have seen. Was a stripper model.

My wife and I took the kids down to Dutch Wonderland (amusement park for little kids) on Thursday and among the 100's of gargantuan MINIvans was 1 Mazda5, and I just happened to end up parking my Escape next to it. My wife who has only seen it in the brochure thought it looked cute.

It looked like a new one.. in red, naturally..

As near as I could tell, it was a new F430.. 2-seat mid-engine model... In the major metropolis of Jonesboro, Arkansas.. :surprise:

I saw an F430 Spyder in "downtown" Torrington, CT.

Did not expect that at all.

Yeah... I'm pulling out of a Burger King in my Honda, and my 12-year-old says, "Dad, look! A Ferrari!

I'm thinking.. Right, a Fiero with a body-kit... I'm not positive on the model, but it was new enough and exotic-looking enough for my son (who is a car-freak..go figure) to yell out that he thinks it is an Enzo..

Driven by a 20-something female.. In Podunk, USA.. Who would have guessed?

Hmhh wonder if it was a paddle shifter F1 style.

One of my customers waited an extra 6 months for his F430 so he could get one with a real manual tranny. He said he could not stand how unconnected he felt with the F1 style tranny.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...and saw plenty of Buick Allures and a car that looks like an Aveo but has a Pontiac grille. Didn't see the nameplate. The Canadian Cobalt is the Pursuit.
  • chuck1959chuck1959 Member Posts: 654
I think it's possibly a Pontiac Wave? They come in hatchback and sedans IIRC.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
a silver Mercedes S500 driving in the rain. That car has presence. Also a green Lexus ES 350.

I'm also seeing many FJ Cruisers. I saw one yesterday in blue, and it really stands out.

Best of all, I saw a red Jaguar E-Type yesterday. Looks really nice.
  • teds1teds1 Member Posts: 180
I also saw a red 430 spyder in Greenport long island (little old whaling town two hours from Manhattan). Made a great noise but everyone else in the car couldn't understand why I was so exited... They don't get it.
Also was stuck on the highway yestaerday between a DB7 vantage and an Xk8 coupe (always liked it, tell me honestly lose the leather and electronics, drop it down an inch or two add a wing on the back, and that's a nice GT racer a la DBR-9)
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
I saw a black Flying Spur today....it was exhibiting poor lane manners, kind of weaving around in its own lane. I imagined the driver as the tipsy Mr. Howell character from 'It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World'
  • chuck1959chuck1959 Member Posts: 654
Crossfire. The 5th one this month. I guess the owners are getting good deals on them?
  • alloway70alloway70 Member Posts: 3
"Aveo but has a Pontiac grille"...Is the Pontiac Wave (hatch & sedan) although you can also get the Chevy Aveo in Canada...it's just like the old days of bad American rebadging..."The Canadian Cobalt is the Pursuit"...actually and again there is still the Chevy Cobalt in Canada, but also the Pontiac G5 Pursuit (Coupe). Check out www.gmcanada.com for all the latest re-badging. I'm sure American's will be driving a Pontiac G5 soon....
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
"I'm sure American's will be driving a Pontiac G5 soon...."

Well, GM will be selling it. How many people will actually be driving it, we'll see.

    Blue Honda Fit, looked nice.

A couple of Yaris sedans, too.

When will Versas start showing up?

"When will Versas start showing up?"

I think I saw one this past Sunday (Wilton, Connecticut). Is that a new Nissan car? I was in a parking lot and stopped to let a car back out of its spot. It was a silver car, with the Nissan logo, and the name of the car on the left rear definitely started with a "V". At first I thought it said "Vespa," but of course that is not possible...then I thought it said "Vesta." Maybe it's time to go to the eye doctor!!

OK, a quick Google check confirms that yes, what I saw was indeed a Versa. Kinda small, sorta interesting looking.
