so, poking around that site, trying to see what I could find that somehow interests me for 12K OTD, not too old or high miles (so, practical, and with any luck, something I could pawn off on the princess next summer!)

These are pretty well equipped. actually drove one with the kid before getting the Jetta, and we both liked it. cheapish, low miles. low miles, and love the colors. could probably knock the price down a bit more too.

This one also is on the cheap side, and not even stripped. actually the same equipped car my son had. OOPs. just looked at the carfax, and it has "structural damage". That would require a serious thorough inspection, but explains the price.

got ambitions today, and organized my car notes into a spreadsheet. Always subject to change, but the first cut has a surprisingly small number of cars on it. Just 20! 14 new, 6 used. But I am sure things will come and go from the list. In fact, I just remember one I forgot, so make that 21! Oops. Forgot 1 more. Now 22.

some we (or I) have looked at already. A few more stops and can have the whole new list knocked off.

Lost power yesterday after 1, lost 1/2 of our tree in front and crack in bedroom under window where it's all wet now. Will need to call insurance company now to repair that window and dry wall...this really sucks! In a Miami airport hotel now for at least tonight, hopefully longer. I've had it with Florida and putting it on notice. Told the wife, I'm leaving very soon with or without ya! Seriously, she knows how traumatized I was in Wilma and now, Irma. Just can not take anymore hurricanes and what comes afterwards!! Texted boss and lead driver we left town because no power and will be back whenever it comes back on. My mental health comes first!!!

    The Sandman :sB)

Sandy....so sorry to hear of your frustration. It is totally understandable, though.

A good friend of mine lives (lived?) in Flagler Beach. I spoke to him on his cell phone last night checking in on him and his wife.

As soon as he felt he should leave, he loaded his motor home and headed to a GA campground. He's ready to retire, but is now seriously considering coming back to Cincinnati (where he's originally from) for the same reasons you state. He says the summers suck, the hurricanes suck, he's tired of rebuilding and repairing every couple of years.

He runs a black topping business. I mentioned he will have plenty of business when he gets back to FL. He's seriously thinking of not going back and driving up my way. He said he knows enough people in the remodeling business that he might just let them get his home in saleable condition and never go back.

I told him to let the initial shock wear off and to come stay with me for a few weeks until things get back to normal. Not sure if he'll take me up on my offer, but I may have some roommates here shortly.

That area between maybe Jacksonville Beach-St. Augustine to Flagler or Daytona is maybe my favorite part of FL, it seems a lot more mellow than the rest of it, not so bath-salty B) Never been there in the summer though, I am sure I would hate the heat and humidity, even if housing there looks painfully cheap compared to here..

I liked the area around St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra, but was disappointed in Daytona when I was there several years back. I also remember back in the early '90s traveling down the coast to Melbourne to visit Cape Canaveral, which was fun, though I hear Melbourne has changed some since.

@stickguy - I was just reviewing the Accord incentives, and I fear I may have mis-quoted them.

There are three separate lease incentives, this month.

Net is that they total up to $3100 for both 4-cyl and V6 sedans.

    My bad.

Some kind of strange noise here about re-siding and replacement windows for the house :)

My '66 was a four door. Dad always wanted a hardtop, but always went with the four doors so in case we rolled over, the B-pillar would keep us from being crushed by the roof. I often told him that if we were to roll over, I think we'd have had bigger fish to fry than no B-pillar. And looking back over the driving history of my entire family, nobody, not once, ever rolled a vehicle over... which includes my sister ;)

Never thought I'd see the day when a TRUCK got hammered for being too "rough-riding". I mean, GEEZ.

For some of the others, seems like their greatest fault to CR was merely being on an old platform. Nothing wrong with "tried and true".

but yeah, there are some real turkeys on that list.

2 generations behind is when I can't hold out any longer. Helps that I tend to buy a new model right when it comes out. Gives you some more time!

You'd probably be okay buying an early-build Honda, but I'd be leery with some other brands, seems like it can take a while to get it right.

That 10 cars to avoid list is a little suspect - now knocking the CLA because of ingress egress issues? Sorry, that's a buyer error issue (if it is true) - something one should catch on a test drive. Same for being "cramped".

And a Tacoma rides rough and might not have a Lexus interior? For shame!

so, love the color and the classic seats. Prices is not too high I guess? But how much would I regret this once it started eating my wallet in gulps?

I bought a couple of Hondas at the very beginning of their model run. Odyssey was a pretty good rework, and the RDX was totally new (but loosely based on the CRV). No issues related to that. Also got an early Voyager (first year of the egg shape and 4 doors). Which, let us just say, was not stellar build quality. My Sonata was also very early release on a significant redesign. So obviously I am way more attracted to shiny new gadgets than worried about new design bugs.

Should hold up OK. Not sure if they fixed the cam follower fault by then. It is a bit dear. $10k would be my limit (worth $8k at auction).

@stickguy I believe the cam follower issue was resolved after 2009 on MkV GTIs and a non-issue on the MkVI (2010-2014) and MkVII (2015-Present).

That is a basic GTI - no goodies really, so not much to go wrong. A good PPI and some regular maintenance should go a long way.

That lists smacks of a lot of personal preference from the author as well. Yes, the Fiat and Mitsu's are pretty bad but many of the others, not so much. Even the 200 and Journey. They are no Accord or CRV but I can't say I'd advise anyone to avoid them if price was a significant issue for them. Slamming the CLA is silly. Not my favorite looking MB offering but still a good car.

That's what I love about CR though, they'll knock an exotic sports car down that can pull 1.2G's around the skid pad for being "rough riding or harsh over bumps" as well.

They'll knock a sub-compact for being less than roomy. They'll knock a barge for not handling well. Equal opportunity.

That GTI has 2-doors. I would think it would be cheap and reliable, with a lot of life left just with 82,000 miles. Probably should do the timing belt and works by 90,000 though. Could be cheap fun.

With a mechanical inspection I'd offer a low cost warranty on it for you.

    Question for the group:

My friend just picked up his new car from the VW dealer (replacement for his TDI).

He asked me if it is normal for the dealer to detail the car to the point of putting some wax on it? He says the paint just seems a bit dull, and the texture on his hand isn't super smooth.

Is this asking too much these days?
