As of 6:01 tonight, I clocked out of Hertz for the last time. Kinda sad but my boss shook my hand and said the door is always open for you if you decide to come back which I thought was great. The bigger boss said almost the same thing on Wednesday when he saw me after hearing about my plans on Monday. Wrote a nice resignation letter as I did mean it when I aid it was a tough decision to leave. January would've been my fifth year anniversary there, never thought I'd stay that long really.
But super excited about what comes next. Hopefully, I won't have to drive down to Miami anymore. The idea of just staying in Palm Beach and Broward counties is great. And the close commute, 3.3 miles door to door, is a dream come true! With no traffic, it's about 8 minutes to work and even with going home traffic, it'll be maybe 15. And my favorite Chinese place is on the way home, so I'm good. Like any new gig, one just has to learn the ropes and deal with new co-workers. But since it's going to be a whole new group, should be easier to get comfortable because we're all going to be in the same situation. And learning where to go won't be that bad, after a couple of runs, I'll know where to go.
Have a short orientation on Monday at 10, getting our shirts. They have a somewhat more specific dress code and no shorts is something I'll need to deal with. Hate wearing long pants in our long summers. I do get the green polo's but I like a shirt pocket for my reading glasses. But they said cargo pants are o k so I'll have pockets. And I can always use my backpack again like I used to do especially useful if I bring a sandwich and soda for lunch. Just need to remember to bring it with me all the time. Tuesday at 7:30 I'll clock in for my first day.
    And life goes on!

Also grabbed the last bottle of Maker's 46 at my local liquor store - $10 off regular price.

Never cared all that much for regular Makers Mark, but recently had Makers 46 for the first time and it was very different and quite good.

Picked up some brand new Mazda CX-5's today at Miami airport, still with most of the plastic on it. Drove very nice after we went to put gas in it as it had almost none in the tank. Drove it up to our Hollywood office on I-95 ans was very impressed with how it drove. Accelerated briskly and betting it's got a 2.5 four banger underneath. Easy to drive, good brakes but not crazy about the wonky infotainment unit. Very similar to our A3's which I hate. Like all the dials on the dash on either side of the radio, not some on the console and some on the dash. Confusing and unsafe as one must look down for a split second to deal with the volume and other functions on that lower wheel thing. Annoying really and would prevent me from buying either the CX-5 or CX-3. Haven't driven a CX-3 yet but the size is spot on for me but if the audio system is the same, it's off my list.
I am liking the new tablet style audio systems on the Toyota's and Hyundai/Kia vehicles. The larger tablet style makes them easier to see and it's still in the forward field of vision which is safer. When I do replace the Golf, the tablet size audio system will play a large part in my choice. It's just a new modern touch which suits me just fine. Reminds me of my iPhone which is the best smartphone out there in my opinion! Both the new Hyundai/Kia CUV's have them so they've moved up to the top of my short list. If they sit a little higher like my 2014 Tucson did, one of them will most likely end up on my side of the garage in the near future. No longer want to purchase a vehicle where I sit down in it, I want one where I can just slide in and out of. The time has come for this which I know limits me. But this, the size of the audio tablet and the smaller size will decide what comes next.

Makers is a very different animal as they use wheat instead of rye. Easier to drink for non-bourbon people, I suppose. I did have my share of Makers as I was beginning to get into bourbon, so you can say it was a gateway of sorts.

My vice is Woodford Reserve, which is actually a fairly high-rye bourbon but is incredibly smooth. And their Double Oaked is amazing!

Good luck with the new gig!

    @fintail
Phone interview went well. She had me in mind for a lower position in a different area but once she spoke to me realized that a more senior role is appropriate. They are expanding and while no position technically exists right now she is forwarding my resume to the SVP and said she is going to recommend I come in for an exploratory interview at the very least.

$615 for repairs and deferred maintenance at my indy mechanic
$50 to restore one of the headlight covers (badly yellowed) by a glass shop.
    $320 for tires

I'm into it for $4800, total..

But, it runs like a champ, and it's fun to drive.. so, we'll see.

How does Firestone’s house brand perform in the snow?

Remains to be seen. The brand is "Primewell". Couldn't get any data on it. The size is 195/55-15 with a V speed rating. So, most of the choices are performance oriented, even the all-seasons. Looking at the tire? I don't have high hopes. It should be serviceable.

That was similar to the experience I had when I left BMW. I liked working with the people but I didn't like working weekends and holidays. When I take a car in I sometimes get asked when I'm coming back. It was-and is-nice to be appreciated.

I think mine looks something like this.

    $307 hubs, axles, steering sensor
    $540 transfer case
    $4600 car/taxes/fees
    $345 headlights/bumper/floor mats/leather paint (unnecessary cosmetics)

So about $5800 for a 2010 AWD SUV with 121k miles. Doesn't seem too bad. I should do tires and fluids, but might try to get through the winter at least. The tires have tread, they just don't seem very grippy, especially in the rain.

Cayenne S was on a Turo trip last night. I got a call from the renter that a coolant low message was on, permanently. I had it towed back to the dealership. A bad omen for Porsche's 'unmatched reliability.' I suspect a coolant leak at 23k miles... The dealer said that it took a little longer to get it started than normal this morning...

The renter of the AMG said he overslept. 40 minutes late at this point. I was concerned that he'd stolen and ghosted when messages and a call were ignored.

So, two out of three rentals have not gone smoothly. Let's see how the Q8's return will go on Monday.

Thanksgiving was nice. Spent part with dad in the rehab place and watched the Bears game. :) His memory was better. Had dinner with friends afterward. I had the best turkey and pumpkin roll I've ever had.

Speaking of which, how are you doing?

It's been a slog. Access to medical care here is so difficult that things take much longer than they should to get resolved.

The afib received treatment as a first attempt with a change in the beta-blocker I was on. That helped to some extent but didn't fully control it and I was still having symptoms. Aside from the limits on physical activity the far more scary result was symptoms that were brief in duration that had stroke-like effects, not fully, but symptomatic, like numbness, or vision related. Those are the result of tiny clots that the afib generates so they also put me on Eliquis for those and upped the beta blocker dosage. After some settling in, that seems to have helped, and for the last 2 weeks or so I have only had one short symptomatic episode. Of course all of this originally started as a side effect of the valve replacement which in turn had delayed my knee replacement. So now I am about 30 months overdue for that and who knows when I will be healthy enough to even get back on the list. TBH at this stage I am trying to avoid the medical system because things only ever seem to get worse when you are in their hands. But the knee is a real problem.

It was in the '50s when we checked it out, but it blew ice cold, then.

Battery just died in my key fob, so I'm out about $2 for that, and two hours of cussing, trying to get that little philips head screw out, and putting it back together...

Darn! I don't care for their regular bourbon, but the Single Barrel is really smooth. If you ever find yourself in my neck of the woods, the Four Roses facilities are one of the few that don't gouge bourbon lovers with expensive tours/tastings. $5 gets you a tour of the distillery, a tasting, and a rocks glass. And a free ticket to go on a second tour of the rick house / bottling facility about an hour away, where you will get another tasting and another glass.

It was just a few short years ago that most of the tours and tastings on the Bourbon Trail were free, but once one of them started charging they all started charging. Except possibly Buffalo Trace. Most of them are between $5-10, but it has gone into nicer tasting glasses that you get to keep, and the visitor facilities and tasting rooms have been upgraded. Over here in Louisville, Angels Envy gets $15 and I think it's $20 at Rabbit Hole. I've yet to visit the latter.

The best tour to get on is one of the last ones of the day... if you get a guide that enjoys what they do, there could be some extra pours. :)

Heaven Hill is the worst one I've ever done. $20 for a very mediocre tasting (no tour), welcome center was under renovation. I don't think we got souvenirs. The sheep were lined up to be fleeced--they were completely booked up for tastings. The gift shop had a bunch of overpriced ticky-tacky.

Yeah, you can’t buy a $3400 car, and expect it not to have needs. If I made an error, it was letting the asking price influence my offer. Would have been a really good buy at $400 less.

New tires on the Honda Fit, today.

Firestone's cheap house brand. $320 total, OTD.

pretty soon you are going to be into this buggy for the price of a new one!
My $3400 car with taxes and fees = $3800
$615 for repairs and deferred maintenance at my indy mechanic
$50 to restore one of the headlight covers (badly yellowed) by a glass shop.
    $320 for tires

I'm into it for $4800, total..

But, it runs like a champ, and it's fun to drive.. so, we'll see.
You are keeping better track than I am.

I think mine looks something like this.

    $307 hubs, axles, steering sensor
    $540 transfer case
    $4600 car/taxes/fees
    $345 headlights/bumper/floor mats/leather paint (unnecessary cosmetics)

So about $5800 for a 2010 AWD SUV with 121k miles. Doesn't seem too bad. I should do tires and fluids, but might try to get through the winter at least. The tires have tread, they just don't seem very grippy, especially in the rain.
Any progress with the noise abatement?
I haven’t had time. I drive it the way it is. It doesn’t seem to mind.
    Shove some dynamat up there...😁
    sounds like work and money.

I use the old standby. Turn the radio up. and when it is warm enough, windows down and moonroof open!

I agree. That’s why they are getting rid of said $3,400 car that the dealer offered them $2,500 for in the 1st place;)

every time I consider being fiscally responsible and buying a cheap used car instead of a new one, I read the stories here, and snap out of it.

I think that was a story on Car Talk. Caller’s daughter’s car made a noise because it was out of oil, so she turned the radio up. The noise got louder, so she turned the radio up again. And then the car died.

I can’t roll the windows down, especially in the Tahoe. If I do, a cloud of dog hair blows up from the back seat and floor mats.

Ya kind of have to look at it this way: fair retail on a clean 2008 Fit Sport with 130k+ miles is just about $4500-$5k. So you are now into it for fair retail. HOWEVER, at YOUR fair retail, you have one that is freshly maintained and sorted. Can’t say that about one that you pay fair retail for from a dealer lot.

Thanks... when I saw this one for sale, near me, I sort of jumped at it. It was the only first generation, manual Fit with under 150K miles and under $5000 within 100 miles. I'm definitely not sorry about it.

My other car hasn't been out of the garage in 10 days.. ;)

@kyfdx - not many snow tire options in that size on Tire Rack, but that could have been an option if you plan to put low miles on it or mostly in the winter.

True... But, if I was going to do that, I could have just put the winters back on my other car. ;)

I considered it. I was thisclose to moving up to some Goodyear Eagle Sports that were on sale. Better tire, and probably slightly better in the snow. But, it is a budget car.

I like it a lot. Haven't taken my other car out in 10 days. The wife is not that impressed, though.

Is it a real like or just the honeymoon phase and novelty of having a well sorted car for < $5k?

As a long time tightwad, that thrill of getting something cheap that works is real! Often fleeting though.

My wife would give me “that look” and make sure I knew she had no intention of ever riding in it.

Good question. I don’t “Viggen” like it, but I’m really happy with it. It really is fun to drive.

I wouldn't expect you to "viggen" like it - I mean, that's what you have the ZHP for, right?

I crossed 1200 miles on the i3 yesterday running around doing errands.

I've been averaging anywhere from 130-150 miles per charge, which is really quite good given that I don't take it particularly easy while driving. I still am enjoying having it as my DD - it really is a nice balance of fun to drive and utilitarian, all while being extraordinarily cheap to run and maintain. I had not used the REX at all since first getting the car, so that kicked on for a maintenance cycle last weekend while running errands. No big deal on that, either. I would say the two biggest features I am glad I sprung extra for were (1) the HK stereo, which while nothing extraordinary, is a solid upgrade from the base, and (2) the Tech package which gave me the larger dash screen - much nicer aesthetic and easier to see.

The only negative is that the suicide doors are definitely not as user friendly as an ordinary 4-door would be. That said, S has learned how to maneuver around them and loves all the extra space he has for climbing in into his seat.

We are definitely driving it more than we anticipated - basically if we don't have to take any large amount of stuff on the weekends (e.g. no stroller, etc.), we are taking the i3 instead of the Outback.

Overall could not be happier with it even as the honeymoon phase decidedly winds down.

Right now it is on L1 charging at home for the day-to-day. On the occasions where I really run it down, I'll use a local fast charger. I am having an L2 charger installed in a couple weeks through a pilot program with Seattle City Light.

At least she alerts you when there is a light on? The engine could fall out of my wife's car and be a mile behind her on the road, and all she'd tell me is that it feels like it is driving funny.

My wife will complain about everything when she rides in the beater. "it smells funny. it's making noise. why haven't you gotten rid of the dead body in the back?" It is nonstop. She doesn't understand the beater concept.

Hell, she worries me when it comes to new cars. Last week, as she is going OUT the door: "I can't take the van because some light is on that means the car will quit." WHAT?! What light is that?! When did it come on and you didn't tell me? "I don't know. I don't think it is the engine light. It is something else. Bye!" Long story short, it was the check engine light for loose gas cap. Again.

Then this morning, again as she is leaving, "the oil light is on in the BMW." What do you mean? Low oil? "I think it wants an oil change. So I can't drive it." Turns out it is the service indicator telling her, in plain English, that she will be due for an oil change in another 1500 miles.

A good answer to that would be: "What BMW?"

Mom & Dad are supposed to take delivery of their RX350 tonight. Since there were snow flurries earlier, I got the "I'm not getting the car tonight speech" from her. Knowing it is the last day of the program, I email the dealer and ask if we can sign the paperwork via pdf & give the rest of the DAS money over the phone, then physically pick up the car tomorrow. "No can do, but we can bring the RX350 directly to your house this evening." OK. Sure.

I’m lucky my wife remembers to tell me her car needs gas. Or even notices. Though she usually remembers when we are getting ready for bed!

I assume she would tell me if a light came on or car started doing something odd. Maybe.

If it broke down on her, she would tell me to start shopping, after she confiscated my car.
