It’s a sunny day here so I wanted to take the Supra out and do some browsing.
Took another look at the 2018 Long Beach Blue M2 that I drove a few weeks ago. Figured I could take a look at the color in the daytime this time. I’d prefer white, but I like the blue too. It’d be nice to get into a manual again, but it’s way overpriced (as are pretty much all manual M2s it seems).
Stopped by an Audi dealership that has had an X4 M40i for months now. Price keeps getting lowered and it’s probably a pretty decent buy at this point. But I didn’t see it on their lot and didn’t want to bother anyone to ask.
That was striking in person. And actually seems to be priced pretty well, though more than I’m comfortable spending. But did seem like a decent deal compared to the pricing of used M2 Comps.
And all that driving around made me appreciate the Supra and the price I paid for it. Which was part of the point of getting out.
Wow, that 3 year old M3 is $56,000? What did it sell for new?
M2 manuals are overpriced? I guess they are counting on true enthusiasts to be competing for them whereas most regular cars with manuals are tough to sell. I guess BMW dealers know their market.

I'm pretty content with the current fleet so it's unlikely there's going to be any changes until August. Even those cheap Camaro lease deals didn't really motivate me to finally scratch the V8/RWD itch, albeit there were also extraneous factors involved

I am holding out with my fleet of 1. I mentioned while out walking with the wife and daughter yesterday about hoping things open up a bit so can more easily stop and browse. Wife's feedback was, "why do we need another car anytime soon?" I had mentioned the 4/1 target date. Guess she missed that! I will take me at least that long to decide what I want anyway. Though I do plan to start monitoring used cars soon, just in case something I can't resist falls into my lap!
It must have been tough walking home after she cut the legs out from under you. At least my wife would follow up that statement with “do what you want, you always do anyway”.

Happy New Year everyone. Please, stay safe this year and hopefully this pandemic will come to an end sooner than later. OF, heard from my lead today as he was asked to work with two other guys. Wasn't that busy at all, they left at 2:15! We were busy on Wednesday but Tuesday, not so much. Took 8 hours of PTO for today since I've never used any so far except when they gave us what we had in March when we were furloughed. Decided I wanted a somewhat regular check for these two weeks and my boss had no issues with it. I did volunteer to work today bu the one group that didn't work last Thursday was worked today which was fair. I still do not want to be a lead driver as of yet, just want to be given a set of keys and told where to go! Unlike Hertz, they get no extra pay for it, as far as I know, so would just rather be a regular crew member. That might change one day as the boss did want me to do it though I respectfully declined since I wanted to wait a bit longer. Still having a bit of trouble learning all the location numbers as there's about 30 of them, give or take. I'd rather be told an address as I find that easier, probably due to my letter carrier brain. Have found that after a couple of times going to a new location, give or take, I can get my way back there with no problem. A few times I've been told just the location number, naturally, and have gone to the wrong one! They just laugh about it but having a slight mental block learning them all. I've got a list I carry with me and also put the pic of them all in my phone so it's easy just to look either place. But after remembering a few that we frequent, I draw a blank on the rest. Just best I don't lead at this point! One thing I did notice, people are traveling right now! All the rental lots at PBI have a minimal amount of extra vehicles in their lots and most locations are about the same. And I've seen at our lot at PBI, a line of folks getting off the shuttle buses and getting in line to pick up their reservations. But it is season down here in South Florida so its expected for the next few months. And folks will start a mass exodus back home later on today and all weekend. Schools open up on Monday and life gets back to our new normal.
We had an easy day Thursday, a few longish runs and lunch at one of our many favorite delis. More like a vacation than work but isn’t that every day. People must be renting more or dealers are buying less because we’re putting wholesale inventory back into service to rent.
To top it off we got a government mandate raise to $12.50/hr. In NY that probably won’t cover the taxes on the rest of my income.

If they put the same lease deal on a Mustang GT, that would be hard to pass up.
hopefully later in Q1 some too good to pass up deal pops up, on something I actually want. Maybe one of the EVs, or a PU, or a Mustang GT would be fine! Or something else fun. The Leaf offer (don't think that applied in NJ?) was good. The Bolt offer from the fall was killer. Even a couple years back, Rodo had a deal listed on a Fusion hybrid (Titanium, or the 2nd tier trim) for about ~210 down, $210/month with a whopping 18K miles/year.
At least being carless makes it a lot easier to pull the trigger on a whim!
Happy New Year everyone! I too am eager to see the 2020 punch list and what the total was for 2020.
Before we start blindly guessing, let’s see who has a lease that ends during CY 2021.
Put me down for a 2021 punch. The lease is up on my 2019 Tacoma in September. I’m most likely going to replace it with a full size pickup. I’ll have to test drive, then keep my eyes on the lease programs. I’ll look at the Tundra, F150, RAM 1500, & even a Silverado. I also want 4 full doors. I think if I do that, then I could get away with the standard size bed.

That M3 does have the Competition Package- but I'd sure want to get a look at the service history and get a PPI while I'm at it. M cars get a service at 1,200 miles; and I'd want to verify that this car received it. It's an LCI(facelift) model, so it's a bit nicer to drive than the earlier cars.

I figured and hoped you’d chime in. What year was the LCI for the M3 and what changed?
For my purposes and the way I drive, a 2016-2018 M2 would be just fine. For that matter, a nice M240i would as well. Basically, if I’d like something like my Supra but with a manual, a 2-series is an obvious choice. I do like the aesthetic improvements on the Comp - seats and new grill and mirror caps.
A lot of the Comp’s appeal is value driven actually - this local Ford dealer is asking $48k for a 24k mile 2018 M2. That may be a little high, but it’s not all that much more than what similar ones are listed at on Carvana, Carmax and Vroom...and those listings don’t seem to last long (not that I stalk those listings ). So...$4-5k more for a 2019 or 2020 Comp seems to be well worth it. I suspect they will hold their value better.
I’m also thinking I’ll end up in another Miata RF at some point. For my driving habits, nothing gives the same thrill of revving up to the 7,500 redline and working that slick Mazda shifter...and finding yourself at a very legal 50 mph.

before even clicking on the link, I knew that white one (which I like on that car) would have a boring black interior. I really hope to avoid cave like guts on the next car I get.
Likely no punches for me in 2021, unless something unforeseen comes my way. I'll technically be eligible for a pull forward by the end of the year, but I can't imagine I'll be taking that route unless there's a big change of circumstances/insane offer.
I saw a Q3 yesterday in that color blue. Striking. But black interior lets that S3 down. I would have to get the brown, or at least tan, interior with that. For me, a Q3 makes more sense.
one total deal breaker on that S3, for me, is the tires. No way 235/35s would survive around here with our bomb crater roads. I think my son's was riding on 225/40s, and he had to use his tire/wheel protection package something like 3 times in 2 years. At least the sporty CUVs still tend to have at least some sidewall!

They bottomed out at $507/month.
It’s a strong deal for Seattle (11% effective discount before incentives) but I just don’t see the value at that price.
Boy, that’s a pretty S3. I haven’t paid too much attention to them since my wife had hers (whatever the first year was that they were available here - 2015?). I like the facelift and that color is gorgeous.
So they got to less than 1% of MSRP - doesn’t seem too bad? How much is the difference in cap cost between the $440 you targeted and their $507?

The LCI(actually the second LCI) was introduced in 2017 on the 2018 cars. Main performance changes are a recalibrated M Adaptive Suspension and M exhaust. 20” wheels are available on the ZCP cars. LED headlights are fitted and iDrive 6.0 gets a touchscreen.

I think, for 2021, we need to have two categories....
One for the total number of punches for the whole group
And a second guess specifically for the @breld punches
There’s no way I match my number for 2020 or even come close. I know...famous last words. But I cringe a bit at the number of moves we made this year - I blame the pandemic and having too much time on my hands.
It’s extremely likely I swap out the fun car. So that’s one almost guaranteed. On the SUV, I think the only thing that would get me to make a move is the availability of a nice electric. Like...if the Mach E actually starts being available at reasonable prices. I do have a refundable deposit on the Rivian, but I’m starting to think that may be larger than we want...having the X3 will give us a good idea on how a compact SUV works for our needs (I suspect it will be more than fine). And for that matter, the Rivian probably wouldn’t be available to me until 2022 anyway.
I think there’s a reasonable chance my wife sticks with her JCW for the entire year.
I’ve only driven the M2 on an autocross course. But, I liked it. Kind of a throwback feel with a regular handbrake. Interior and size reminded me of my ZHP.
The one I drove was a DCT, but I’d get a stick. At this point, I’d rather have a Cayman, though.
If the Miata had a fixed roof and about 50 more hp I would give it a hard look. I already have a momentum car, and the only convertible I want is the Wrangler.

The Miata RF was actually one of my longer owned vehicles of late. That was a nice buy - a 2017 Club with the Brembo/BBS package with super low miles for $25k. I’d definitely go for a 2019 or 2020 at this point with the increased hp and higher redline...plus a telescoping steering wheel!
At around $30k or less, it strikes a lot of notes for me for that fun car.
I'm sure I'll be low, but I'm going with 35/7 this year (2020 total was 46, unless there were any after @breld's X3 that corvette has yet to enter). And, @breld had a relatively light 8 punches this year, so maybe we're all in for a shock in 2021 if his total this year was inflated due to extra coronavirus time!

M2 manuals are overpriced? I guess they are counting on true enthusiasts to be competing for them whereas most regular cars with manuals are tough to sell. I guess BMW dealers know their market.

To top it off we got a government mandate raise to $12.50/hr. In NY that probably won’t cover the taxes on the rest of my income.

Bradd, isn't a standard (short) bed 1/2 ton at least as big as the bed on the Tacoma?
I know I will get a punch next year. Hard to imagine not doing it.

And a second guess specifically for the @breld punches

For my purposes and the way I drive, a 2016-2018 M2 would be just fine. For that matter, a nice M240i would as well. Basically, if I’d like something like my Supra but with a manual, a 2-series is an obvious choice. I do like the aesthetic improvements on the Comp - seats and new grill and mirror caps.
A lot of the Comp’s appeal is value driven actually - this local Ford dealer is asking $48k for a 24k mile 2018 M2. That may be a little high, but it’s not all that much more than what similar ones are listed at on Carvana, Carmax and Vroom...and those listings don’t seem to last long (not that I stalk those listings
I’m also thinking I’ll end up in another Miata RF at some point. For my driving habits, nothing gives the same thrill of revving up to the 7,500 redline and working that slick Mazda shifter...and finding yourself at a very legal 50 mph.

I offered $2k DAS (first month, registration, taxes and fees) plus MSD and $440/month including tax and Audi care.
They bottomed out at $507/month.
It’s a strong deal for Seattle (11% effective discount before incentives) but I just don’t see the value at that price.

So they got to less than 1% of MSRP - doesn’t seem too bad? How much is the difference in cap cost between the $440 you targeted and their $507?

The one I drove was a DCT, but I’d get a stick. At this point, I’d rather have a Cayman, though.

I'm sure I'll be low, but I'm going with 35/7 this year (2020 total was 46, unless there were any after @breld's X3 that corvette has yet to enter). And, @breld had a relatively light 8 punches this year, so maybe we're all in for a shock in 2021 if his total this year was inflated due to extra coronavirus time!
being optimistic.
