If I roll them down tomorrow and one breaks, will you paypal me the money to get it fixed? :P
Your early W220 problems are very typical, good to see you haven't had other issues. No suspension bugs? It's funny that nearly 10 years later a comparable new S550 is barely more expensive.
For the most part, I agree with your taste in cars, and wouldn't complain if I had such a stable. Did you buy the SL new? What color is your E cabrio?
It is typically illegal to discuss a debt with someone other than the debtor, but it is likely not illegal to tell someone that another person bought a car.
The SL is Silver with black leather and a black soft top, the E Cabriolet is white with grey leather and a black soft top. I love the Cab... a sweet driving car with none of those new fancy electronics (a true Mercedes).
Over the years I have put some money in the SL and just recently putting a new soft top on it. I just can't get rid of it as the value has fallen so much and the car looks so good. Eventually, I guess I'll have a real nice looking door stop! LOL!
Yesterday, I stopped by our local Mercedes dealer just to look. A car buddy of mine is visiting from Atlanta. The dealer had 3 S-class cars on the lot and to my surprise, they had an S400 Hybrid... list was $95K. Mileage was 19 city vs. the regular version of 15 city. Not sure if that's worth it or not but considering my Honda CR-V get 19 strickly in the city (when using the air), the Mercedes mileage is not too bad.
Mark PS. Fin, no, the S500 has had no suspension problems at all, yet.

....MB builds an S-class Hybrid (or any other); seems a little silly, doesn't it?
I agree re your assessment of the E320 (124 series) as the last of the 'real' Mercedes, they're great cars. Your cabrio is probably worth a lot more than your SL, too. The 300CE/E320 cabs are among my dream cars (maybe not your exact color combo, but I'm not so picky, really).
....except with a better driver's seat, and no rust behind the front wheels. Mine doesn't have the sloppy-ish rear bumper trim (the one in the photo looks a little bent). Same color combo (my favorite); the pics make it look so purdy, guess mine needs a wash:
At the time, the problem with the "E" cabs is that they were priced wrong for the market. In 1995, Mercedes lowered the price of all their lineup. The '95 E listed for $79K whereas an SL was $80-85K or so. The '95 Cab that we bought sat on the dealers lot for over a year and we bought it in January of '96 with a big discount.
If I'm not mistaken, the previous "E" cabs where $85K MSRP. Just way off the mark price-wise compared to other 4 seater convertibles (like the Bimmers).

Did you buy the SL back when they were the newest thing and there was endless demand and hype for them? I remember seeing them advertised for 100K+ then! As you probably know 1990 was the first model year for those cars.
And yeah, they aren't worth much today. Even if gorgeous, an early car is going to struggle to get much over 10K. But they are old school and will last forever...so if you like it, keep it.
Those 124 cabrios are elegant and high quality cars, yes, and I believe your memory of the pricing structure is correct. When those hit our shores in 1992-3, they were insanely expensive, over 80K - but I think the market rejected that, so the price had to be adjusted down...and they were still a bit more than a normal 124 coupe or sedan.
Last time I stopped by the local MB dealer here, they had 2 S400 on the lot - a normal one for 95K, and an really loaded one for over 110K. I think that car can do even better on the highway. It might be fun to have simply to be different and maybe rare compared to a normal S550. It's a shame they didn't go ahead with the diesel hybrid, or that we don't get the diesel S here. The diesel 7-series I drove in Germany returned well over 30mpg in mixed driving.
Yeah those are kind of cool. My car and many Euros have blinkers on the mirror, but on the other side, although the lens curves so you can see some light just slightly from the rear. When did those hit the Buick option list?
Well, it's a 4-car garage, but I have too much other junk in there, so I can only get 3 in there. Right now the LeMans, Catalina, and 5th Ave are in there. When the DeSoto comes back from the mechanic, it's going to have to go in there too, as my uncle doesn't want me keeping it over at my grandmother's anymore. So that means the 5th Ave is getting evicted.
I'm planning on building a carport off the back of the garage...something with a sturdy roof, but no walls. I figure I'll put the 5th Ave and the other NYer back there. Alas, my Park Ave will probably spend its whole life outside. I have faith it'll hold up, though, as cars usually don't leak and deteriorate like they used to. Sometimes I keep forgetting though, that it's already a 10 year old car, so if I hold onto it as long as I did the Intrepid, it'll be 20!
""Did you buy the SL back when they were the newest thing and there was endless demand and hype for them?""
Well, it was ordered at the end of Dec. '89 and arrived in June '90, the first one in town! I did not pay over list but can't remember what the discount was if any (almost 20 yrs ago).

well, yeah....the (124) E cabs were $80k-ish new, and it certainly didn't help that the CLK cabs that were marketed as their direct replacements were, I think, $55k or so in 1997 (I may be not be precise in this, but still...).
3-series BMW convertibles didn't compare in quality or exclusivity (or size) to the E-class or even the CLK, but still, they were half the price (or less) at the time the 124 E-class cabrios were introduced.
I think the first vehicles I started noticing those signals in were higher-end SUVs. They really are a good idea, although I imagine that if you get a mirror ripped off your car, they add considerably to the repair bill.
OK, Fez, if you buy that P5 and stick buys the bimmer, I think these sellers owe me birddog fees.
PLUS, if either or both of you guys buy those cars, I want first dibs when sell-time comes! If these came up in February, I'd probably buy one of them myself.

That's quite a nice collection you have Mark, I also think the old E Class cabrios have that timeless MB feel and style to them. And yeah, pricing was outrageous for those times. When the CLK line arrived, I think they were priced about $20k less than the E Class coupe/cabrio.
It's funny that you have the little CR-V among a line of luxury cars. It reminded me of this one doctor at a hospital I once worked at. He had a Ferrari Testarossa and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The license plate frame on his Cherokee read: "My other car is a Ferrari" which I bet most folks mistook it as one of those vanity joke plate frames, but in this case it was the truth.
The one negative I can see with the blue 325iT (besides the miles, but they're not insane), is the whole trunk area carpet looks really skanky, filthy. And maybe the carpet in front. To me, a dirty interior, it's like a sin in a car that nice.
OTOH: The seller has 900 feedbacks, 100% Positive, that's not nothing. And receipts for a lot of maintenance apparently, from a bmw dealer. Having bought & sold some $1-2-3K items on ebay, & also audio sites, I get very good vibes from the guy's listing.
I drove a 323iT, stick, SPP, new in 2000 or 2001. It drove like a go-kart, one of the most fun cars I've ever driven....
Really? I thought there was a cargo tray liner back there. Unless you mean up the sides? Hard to relaly tell in a picture about that, since I never found auto carpets to photograph well.
I agree with you about the warmn/fuzzy about the seller and his ad. If he is a scammer, he is a very good one!
Yeah, that iC is the color combo I like. Looks great in the pics. Not sure if 76k miles is ideal, but it seems like a fair car for the money. I really don't want to go look at it. Except that I kinda do...

Yes, I did noticed that. When I got the '91 560 SEL, I was thinking it would have some improvements like the SL had as it was a '90. The SEL didn't have a tilting steering wheel like the SL, just telescoping. They also had the exact same radio. :surprise:

Did buy the wife & I a late Hannukah gift today for our rides...new 3 year alignment policies. Our previous ones ran out in August and just forgot to renew them, so did it earlier today. They're great things to have, as they can be used over and over and are also transferrable to a new car. I know the wife's Mazda 3 will be gone sometime within the next year or so, so it'll transfer to whatever she buys. Since we don't buy new cars that often, we like to keep them well maintained.

ah yes, the coveted (LOL) Becker Grand Prix.....the unit in my mom's '88 300E bit the dust in about 1995; she was going to have it replaced with the same stereo, til the MB dealer informed her that her unit would have to be removed and shipped to Germany for repairs instead; not only cost-prohibitive, but would have left her without a stereo for several weeks. It was replaced with an appopriately mellow-looking Sony CD player instead.
My W126 had a Grand Prix...it actually had no problems other than weird complexity. I was a gentle user though, and I suspect the original owner of the car was as well.
I am not sure about the mid 90s, but Becker now has a location in NJ that refurbishes radios...I had the Europa in my fintail done last year, only cost around $200, which included an aux input attachment that allows it to be used with an ipod.
....that they were even able to put the aux input into a radio that old (not that I even know what that involves, but for $200, an excellent deal). Makes sense that Becker finally has a location in NJ, isn't that where MB USA's headquarters are as well?
There's some kind of fitting on the back that can be hooked up to an aux input - I have it routed under the dash so it is hidden, the faceplate of the radio is untouched. Maybe those things were advanced. I forget exactly what my radio needed - some kind of fuse or circuit or something, took a few weeks and I had it back. Works perfectly now, and then even put a new bulb in it so it has a nice vintage color when it is on - kind of a light yellowish green I think. One of the best $200 I've spent on the old beast.
Yeah I think MBUSA HQ has been in NJ since the 70s. Becker is still in business making modern units too, but I don't know if they are really sold in NA.
The radio in the 500SL started to have cracking sounds. I thought it was a broken speaker, etc. Come to find out it was a bad amplifier. We have a local privately owned Mercedes repair facility that I have used in the past so I thought I would give them a try. They also have a very large Mercedes "junk yard" for parts. A new amplifier was going to cost $1,000 but they sold me a used one off another Mercedes for $500 with a six month warranty. A new one would have a year warranty. So, I thought I would try it and so far so good at about 4 months.
The SL also started having a problem with the automatic top. In 1990, the first year of the automatic top, had built-in elastic straps to pull the metal folding cage back so that it would fold nicely in the boot. Surprisingly, it had worked flawlessly for 17 years. Before I had the new soft top put on it was starting to not fold correctly. I had to push the middle bar in with my hand for the top to fold down. A local auto custom upholstery shop installed the new soft top along with new sunvisors (they started to detiorate) and installed insulation under the hood that started to dry rot and break off.
Apparently the elastic straps were getting tired so I ask the private repair facility to fix it. They told me that Mercedes changed the design starting with the '91 models. The 'new' parts, which are now a metal spring-type apparatus that attaches to the cage, would be $900. So, I asked about a used part. They had them and charged me $400 as they removed them off a wrecked '91 SL they had in stock.
I also needed a front passenger fog light assembly as a rock broke the outer lense. No used part available. The new fog light lense assembly was $160 (not the whole part that has the bulb)... that would have been $350.

Yeah, the carpet looks really dirty, both in front, & the cargo area. (If you "zoom in" to the cargo area, the black carpet not covered by the cargo tray liner is sort-of-black, covered by a lot of brown dirt).
The interior color(s) are very odd for that car: black, but with brown seats. I've never seen that on those cars. I thought maybe the seats were replaced, until I noticed the brown inserts in the door panels. I actually have the brochure for that year, nothing about getting diff. color seats with whatever int. color (????)
If it were me, I'd keep looking for something more pampered, even with less options, maybe a 5 series, way more practical......
I loved the look of the R129 SL's when they came out in 1990, was it? But the stories here of what it costs to maintain one might make even a bmw owner blanch. Still, if I lived in S. FL say, found a nice one inexpensive, had the budget for maintenence.......
That's what screws up so many car buying plans: "if it only had"______......(--fill in the blanks)
I think a R129 would be easier to maintain than a modern SL, anyway. I don't think they are too bad - not cheap, but not complete problem children. And yeah, 1990 was the first MY for them here...I remember when they hit the shores in the fall of 89, people were paying gigantic premiums for immediate delivery. If I was to seek a R129 I might seek a 6cyl variant for easier maintenance, or a late 'silver arrow' model. I think in 1990-92 a few of the 300SL were even sold with a 5-speed.
That's pretty cool, for a slightly later car like a 2002 that would look appropriate.
My fintail has a Becker Europa, which was very popular in the 60s in some Euro cars. My example is a transistorized unit made probably in 1963-4. The "pinstripe" Becker faceplates look very correct in old MB - they were dealer installed options at the time, as MB didn't start putting radios in the cars from the factory until the 70s, IIRC.
For about 20 years of ownership, that's not too bad...even with the other not-cheap maintenance.
I am shocked a used amp cost so much! Must be some R129 specific unit. Private shops are great for aging models too...the dealer would have robbed you.
You can always get a USB extension cable if it's not long enough (or if you want to put the iPod in the trunk)... Have you reached an impasse on the M5?
Lots of drooling on this discussion re M5's so went to local dealer for kicks and to check out the 3's and 5's. Brand new 2010 m5 and m3 in the showroom. Once I saw the backseat and trunk of the 3 went right to the 5. Walked around and opened the doors/trunk etc. Listened to the friendly but annoying sales mgr spiel. No pressure since I told him it would be a while. Couldn't justify the $$$$ for the M -- didn't even look at the sticker. Those huge summer tires would scare me to death on wet icy roads. The 528xi may be a player. Then I sat in the driver seat and my magic twanger got a serious plunking. Very very seductive. Didn't drive one or even turn the key. Did release the cupholder in the dash. :P Would still stick with the 528xi though -- always lease. Entirely new model due in spring. Who knows -- my murano boring on the drive home. We will see.
