then trade or sell after 3 years

Well you'll have big depreciation buying almost new, & selling after 3 years, with expensive cars like that. Would you keep it longer if you liked it?

I'd also think about the proximity of a dealer, during the warranty, &/or a good indie mechanic. And yeah, the (older gen) A4's I've driven are real boring with auto trans, fun with sticks, the newer 5's & E-class seem much more appropriate with automatics.....

Man, that's worse than my old Land Cruiser FJ60's 12mpg. Makes me almost feel okay about our 4wd Pilot getting 22mpg driving to the coast last weekend.

The reviews on the new a4's are pretty good re fun to drive. If you compare dimensions they are just a tad smaller than the a6's and less $. As to resale, I'm pretty realistic --- figure purchase price minus 6k per year as a benchmark for depreciation on a 1-2 year old low mileage cpo. Drive about 10k per year. When the time comes to sell-trade-send to auction-if I get anything better,I figure the difference is a bonus. Most buyers of used E class sedans are older folks who probably are going to shy away from a 4-5 year old car out of warranty. They will pile up on lots until the prices drop real low and still don't sell. The BMW 528xi may have a broader appeal due to the nature of the beast as a driving machine and thus offer quicker sale potential if the price is right.
An example-- Buy 2 one year old cpo cars with 7k miles -- 4 years warranty for the E and 5 years for the bmw. Lets use 40k as a price point -- in reality more or less- but use 40k as the price. Three years and 30k miles later I'm looking at 22k as my resale target. Both still have warranty left. Put them both on feebay at no reserve. Which one is more likely to meet or exceed my 22k? Could throw in the A4 but would expect to pay less to start so it really doesn't fit.

Home all week, so I can't help but spend some time surfing the web and pondering.

It doesn't help that I discovered something the other day. I mounted some childseat latch points in the Benz and moved my son's seat behind the driver to make more room for the soon-to-be-needed rear-facing seat for the newborn. Later that day, we went out and it turns out my son cannot fit comfortably behind me. Because he is in the carseat, his feet can't go under the driver's seat and, therefore, can't fit in the little room I leave behind me. Uh-oh!

On that particular trip, I spotted a nice black Protege5 in the parking lot at the store. It occurred to me it would be kinda strange if we have my wife's black Mazda5 and a black Protege5. Pointed it out to the wife and she said "no way. that is too small. it won't solve the problem." Hmmmm....

So I looked it up here on Edmunds. According to the specs, the P5 offers a whopping 4.3 more inches of rear legroom than my Benz. Just about the same as her Mazda5. More than a 3-series wagon and more than my previous G35. Pretty amazing.

On another note, what should turn up in a search last night? A VERY rare bird ... an '00 C70 5-speed vert. Just 83k miles. And its midnight blue. Man, that is tempting. BUUUTTT... I just can't see myself driving a vert daily.

I'm envious, qbrozen, you are licking your chops over a car with 83k miles. I get scared at buying anything over 30k miles. Wish I had your mindset -- could save myself a lot of money. ;)

My limit is 60K miles, unless it is absolutely DIRT cheap. I am talking well under $5000.

I have been contemplating picking up an old RAV4 for $3-4K - there are a number of them out there with maybe 100-120K miles, which should be OK for that particular model.

I didn't know you could retrofit LATCH anchors to an early 90's Benz...

I really like the styling of the 1st-gen C70 coupe, but it seems like they sold more convertibles.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Personally I'd kill for an E60/E61 5-series. And once you've decided to spend $18K for 3 yrs. of car ownership, just get what'cha want, I say.

Just curious, why are you already thinking you'd want to sell such a nice car after 3 years? And having eaten such big depreciation? At that point, the depreciation curve is going to flatten out, or get way less steep.....

Well, after looking around for awhile, I finally pulled the trigger on a second car, to be used by my wife around town and commuting. A 2010 Nissan Versa S, automatic, power pack w/cruise, keyless, abs, etc. $13.4K + TTL with 1.9% rate. I feel good about it: Edmunds lists invoice with same options at $15381, and TMV at $15798.

I had been looking for used Hyundais, Yaris, Fit, etc. but the deal on this made more sense. As Andre and I discussed on the Subcompacts forum, used subcompact prices are insane, especially given that their new sales have dropped over the past 6 months. Brand new, warranty and promo rate iced it for me.

Anyhow, it drives very nicely, and is rather spacious given its size. I like it. ;)

wow. How did you manage $2k below invoice? They have $1500 trunk money on them now, but the other $500 had to come from somewhere. I'm surprised they took a hit on a 2010. But it is that time of year.

I keep thinking about a Versa, too. The hatch is a good looking vehicle. They just aren't cheap enough used et for me.

Welll... to call them LATCH is a bit misleading. They are anchors to which I can attach the childseat hooks.
I'm still using the seatbelt through the back to be safe, but wanted something additional. So I pulled out the seat bottom and bolted some padlock receivers near the seatbelt anchors.

On the 83k volvo, don't forget I'm driving a Benz with twice those miles. ;)

I forgot to mention that this was for a hatch, not the sedan.

Nissan has a $500 rebate for financing with them, so that's probably what you're thinking of. From when I drove up to when I left took only 90 minutes. Most painless buy ever. Which probably means there may have been more to grab, but I feel pretty good about it.

whoops. Just checked again. Its $1250 incentives ($750 cashback and $500 for the financing), not $1500. So you did even better.

Hmmmm... wait a sec. Just checked Edmunds and they say the $750 can't be combined with the 1.9 financing. So how the heck did the dealer do this for you? They would have lost a bundle. What am I missing?

nice looking convertible, but I guarantee your son wont fit behind you, unless you remove his legs.

Dumb question, but I guess the rear facing seat won't fit their either? Legs not an issue in that case.

Funny given my handle, but I would rather have that Volvo with a ST. Test drove the same car a few years back (used), and it was a very nasty clutch/shifter combo.

saw that the 2002 BMW wagon sold at $8,100. Bids happened early, then it flatlined (hmmm, maybe Xmas wasn't the best day to finish the auction?)

Would have been tempted if I could have seen it in person at around that price point.

Ah well. Gonna be mega commuting again for at least the 1st quarter, so will probably just pack the 7,500 miles that will entail on the Accord. Maybe use the Acura TL 1 day/week to spread the wealth, and keep it exercised!

funny you say that. Back when I bought my S70 T5, I decided the same thing. Tried the MT and disliked it, so went AT.

    ONTO OTHER THINGS!
OK, can anyone help me out with the Pontiac thing? Just read on another thread about the deep discounts. Checked incentives on Edmunds, and it is confusing to say the least. Looks like it could be $7500? But when I run a TMV report, it tells me $6500. ???

Anyway, even with just $6500, TMV is $10920 for a base 2.4 with power pack and stereo upgrade. Damned cheap.

I checked on Vibes last night using the inventory tool, but the closest ones were ~350 miles away and they were all automatics. I think stock is thin in some places.

The other odd thing about the fire sale is that GM first "sells" them to the dealer and then they become used cars when they get sold to you. Not sure of that reasoning but it's still a good incentive. I guess GM doesn't want to pay off the dealers and then pay off the buyers.

"GM will pay $7,000 for every car moved out of new car inventory and into rental- or service-vehicle fleets before Jan. 4.

Said vehicles must then be sold as used cars, but when the dealer passes the cash along to the customer, the savings could be quite significant. However, this can't be combined with the 0-percent, 72-month loan terms or the $6,500 rebate GM has already been offering."

The warranty would start when they sell them to the dealer, as well. I think the Vibes are nearly sold out now. Most of what I've seen left are G6s, G8s, and Solstices.

Yeah, I was checking inventory myself. Turns out there is a manual GT near my home. Weird thing is it says the MSRP is $18,995. According to Edmunds, GTs start at over $20k.

OK, so $7k is the real incentive? Is that correct? So someone should be looking like invoice minus $7k? Because of the above problem, however, I would have a tough time figuring out invoice too accurately.

OK. Never mind. I called the dealership that shows 2 vibes (along with a bunch of other Pontiacs) and the salesman reported they have NO pontiacs. He says he received 60 calls yesterday asking for Pontiacs. And, during that time, he tried to locate Vibes and found only 2 on the entire East Coast and 1 of those was being held onto by the dealership owner for his personal demo because of the low cost.

Probably somewhere. The car has had a vibration problem during the year that I've owned it. They've replaced parts in the transmission twice to try to fix it, in addition to performing a TSB or two and balancing the tires numerous times. After the fourth repair attempt in one year, it's considered a lemon.

Actually, its $750 cash or $500 and the financing. He told me they weren't making any money on the car, and this seems to be correct from what I can find. End of the year quota grab? I don't know, but they did have 27 2010 Versas on the lot.

The finance guy did try to slip some 'stolen car registry' thing in the paperwork for $399 without saying a word...just a 'and sign this' between the other forms. When I said no, he gave me the 'all our cars have it', then a 'you'd be the first one not to take it.' I replied that I liked being first. :)

The Nissan website shows both and subtracts both from the MSRP to show what you'd pay. So its $1250 off OR $500 + financing special. So, for most people, they'd be giving up $750 to get the 1.9%.

But you got both and then some. Great deal.

    True, but that's for the 09's. The 10's are 750 or 500+finance.

I drove the car last night for about 40 miles. Very quiet, nice ride and lots of room. Its a little pokey for passing, but acceptable. Good city car. My wife loves the metallic blue color and its easy to park, so she's in. One of her first questions was not about mileage, price etc, but about color and what she should name the car. I'm glad she likes it...

You keep making me re-check my work. :P

Look again. Nissan website fine print has the following:
[2] 2010 Versa Hatch S 1.9% APR financing for up to 60 months plus $500 NMAC Cash for qualified buyers* OR $750 cash back plus $500 NMAC cash.

For me personally, not a huge deal. My credit union will give me 3.9% for up to 66 months. So I would take the $1250. But, like we said, you got all that money, then some, PLUS the 1.9%. Just amazing. I think I'd be all over that, too.

Although, I did semi-rule out the Versa for myself. Being an autocrosser, it disturbs me greatly that it only comes with 5.5" wide wheels.

OK, so $7k is the real incentive? Is that correct?

That's the problem isn't it? GM is cutting the dealer a check for $7k to get it off their books. Now the dealer has a new used car and you know they are going to try to keep some of that $7k for themselves. It's not hood money that has to be passed on to the buyer. Plenty of buyers won't read the news and will just think they are getting a terrific deal for, say, $4,000 off invoice.

With the sales tax write off likely to disappear, the showrooms are full. Today is a sellers market tomorrow a buyers market. You are going to have to wait til 1 hour til closing to get a deal today with that sales tax hammer in the dealers hand. Was at the nissan dealer yesterday for an oil change and it was the busiest I've seen it in 16 months.

Took my wife's Mazda5 in for its first service today. Who of us can avoid snooping around at times like that?

They have an '02 Saab 95 Linear wagon with only 60k miles. Asking price is near $9k, but, given the value, I think $7k is doable.

Wish it was an Aero, but $7k for a 60k near-luxo turbo wagon is pretty tempting. I didn't drive it. Was too afraid to without my Galves in hand (why I went to a dealership without it is beyond me).

Anyway, MSNautos gives a decent reliability report. Any opinions? I think I'd probably find it too pokey anyway. And I really didn't want a 3600 lb car the next time around.

As Sgt. Hulka said in the movie, Stripes.. "Lighten up, Francis" ;)

Anyway.. some musings from the last couple of days..

    1) Saab 9-3 fuel mileage: The turbo-4 is rated at 17 mpg city, and the Aero turbo-V6 is rated at 15 mpg city.. Might as well buy an Escalade..

    2) Stopped by the indie dealer in Cincinnati that has the '04 330i ZHP.. Just took in another in trade on Thursday.. '05 330Ci (coupe) ZHP... 49K miles, Sparkling Graphite with black leather... all options.. formerly CPO, so has extended warranty for about another year.. Looks almost perfect.. $20,900.. He suggested I buy it now... says it will probably be gone within a couple of weeks... :surprise:

    3) That dealer also has an '04 VW R32 that he recently took in trade.. Asked him about it.. "You don't want it". Said he might have to replace the engine.. He's run across 4-5 of them... says they've all been beat on ... Too many kids own them, in his opinion..

Cars are much like people in that, after they reach a "certain age"...
the maintenance is more important that the mileage.

(Good genetics play a big part too!) :)

.. and an attractive shape makes them soooo much more desirable, regardless of age.

The dealer has now been sitting on the 90K mile M5 for over a month. Yesterday they
relisted it on eBay- this time with a BIN price of $13,950. It seems that the car threw a CEL after my PPI and test drive; the eBay listing states that the car "needs
    cats"... :surprise:
Now, here's where it gets interesting; it seems that more than a few other issues can cause the OBD II to report a bad cat, such as pre/post O2 sensors or a stuck open thermostat. However, if the cats ARE bad, a BMW dealer will charge over $5,500(!) to replace them. The good news is that there are more than a few aftermarket solutions which can fix the problem for less than $1,000...
    So... what to do?
Well, right now I'm planning to just sit back and watch. If it fails to meet reserve for a second time I think I'll offer them $12,000 OTD. If they take it I'm a few grand ahead of the game, even if the cats are bad- if not, there are plenty of ///M fish in the sea...
