Never a good time to total a car but now was REALLY not a good time.

She lives alone and in a rural area so we weren’t going to be comfortable putting her in something that cost $10k.

Not much choice in this market. It came from the Subaru dealer and had a good service record. New tires and I had them replace the serpentine belt before she took delivery.

Its in great shape and is safe which is what she wanted. She’s 80 with the beginnings of macular degeneration so its not like she’s going to be driving much longer or for great distances.

I agree, in this market if you have to buy you get the best that’s available and hope you’re not getting screwed to badly.

This past Winter Son #1 HAD to get a replacement for his ‘16 Kia van that had a bad engine just out of warranty with, I think somewhere around 112K miles. He was not going to pay the ridiculous mark ups on any new vans so he found a very nice 2012 Infinity EX35 (I think that’s the year and model) at a Jeep dealer in Niagara Falls via the internet. He knew he was paying a premium because of the market but didn’t think it was too bad given the car had 37K miles on it. When he had a PPI done on it by an indy shop, just for grins he asked the guy had badly he was being screwed on the price and the guy said, “that’s pretty damn good for today. If you keep looking you could probably find this car for less (I can’t remember now what the price was) but not in this shape with these miles on it”. When I mentioned this in here when it happened, @qbrozen thought the price was a little high but felt the mileage kinda made up for that.

Yep, today you just grab what you think is the best before it disappears and hope for the best.

That's sort of where we are with the Crosstrek. My wife suggested we sell it (finally), but I'm not really feeling it now that we are into this market for the long haul. It's our newest car with the fewest miles, so what happens if something goes astray with the Forester or Q7 (well, TBH, what *doesn't* go astray with the Q7?) and we suddenly find ourselves actually needing a car?

I just feel more comfortable hanging onto it right now, even if I could easily pocket $10K by dumping it (we still have a note on that one).

Over 4th of July we were out in OH. One of my kids drove down from WI.
We had to do some car juggling every evening, no overnight parking on the street.
I moved her 2013 Escape with about 100k on it.
Trip odometer was at 547 miles and MPG readout was at 29.5.
It's rated at 28 MPG highway.

You asking how much $, or how is it done? I think it is just done using a scan tool. I think RB has said he’s done his own maybe? Can’t possibly take long.

I assume Carly can do it. Probably a worthwhile purchase if you have an aging BMW! Plus it can do all kinds of customizations to settings.

    ————————————————

I’m asking the up charge for doing it. They may say something like, “it’s better if we register it”. But maybe it’s rolled into the battery cost for cars that require it.

I know it can’t be too hard to do with a scan tool if @roadburner could do it. o:)

Brought the Jeep in for service. Not impressed thus far. Dropped it off. Go see the service advisor. Tell her I made an appointment. She takes my name. Asks what the problem is. Check engine light and it says “service vehicle charging system” when I try to plug it in. Also, the driver’s side left corner of the roof leaks.

Her response: “so how long can you leave it with us? This is an electric vehicle, ya know and not just anybody can work on it. And about the top - they all leak.”

I told her I needed the car back tomorrow because I rented a car for the day that isn’t cheap. I made this appointment a week ago and specifically told the woman whom I spoke with that I had a 4Xe plug in hybrid. I don’t work close and need to make sure I can get back here in time tomorrow night.

In the meantime, I rented a new tundra from the Toyota dealer. It’s all they had. Very LARGE!

That is inexcusable. I know leaking hardtops have been an issue since the JK introduced removable roof panels.

I get they don’t have loaners. Wow. They have A LOT of work ahead of them to “fix” the hundreds of thousands that don’t leak since something must be wrong with them.

Thanks. So far I’ve just driven home from the dealership, to tennis with my wife (you should have seen the “we are taking THAT” look on her face), then to Trader Joe’s.

It’s quite basic. I’d guess SR trim. Doesn’t have 4 full doors. Steelies.

It doesn’t feel as powerful as the Ford Eco Boost motor, but the power delivery is much more linear. If I didn’t know it was a turbo V6, I’d have to look under the hood to make sure it wasn’t a v8. Suspension feels slightly less refined and it drives like something as big as it is.

The lack of a loaner wouldn’t bother me; it’s the fact that they need some specially trained tech who is either too busy or not available. That’s what persuaded me to scratch the GR Supra off my list.

had a good day today in our "sell anything that isn't nailed down" going out of business sale. A bunch of old toys (well, some apparent collectibles) and our daughters old dresser (complete with removable changing table that goes on top! She is now 26 BTW). Moved another chair and some other odds and ends yesterday (including an antique sewing machine I was sure was going to the curb for garbage day). Might have cleared close to $250 this weekend alone. People giving you money to take your extra stuff away is a wonderful thing!

thankfully running out of stuff to sell. That means it isn't in the house any longer! Would still like more to move on out but can only push the other half so far at this point, so some stuff will be moving that really should not.

Had an email yesterday from the manager at my Ford dealership. Confirmed what I assumed that I was not scheduled and likely won’t be. Asking if I wanted to roll over order as is or make any changes. So it does seem like you can adjust the order as part of the process but I did ask to confirm it won’t impact original order date.

Told him for now to bump it up to a lariat (from XLT) and once they released to order guide and I knew what they were changing with standard features and options, plus color choices, I’d decide on any other tweaks.

Then just back to another 5+ months of waiting! Now up to about 8.5 months since that order went in.

Not acceptable at all. The 4xe has been out for over a year now. There should be more than 1 tech at the dealership that can work on them. Really troubling for Jeep since the GC 4xe is being released too. If this turns into a major issue (bricked battery) I’d open a case with Jeep so they pick up the rental fees.

BTW…my top doesn’t leak. Squeaks at the back window/tailgate area but I think some 303 on the seals would take care of that. I’ve only had 2 minor gremlins. Once the Infotainment system froze and wouldn’t shut off even when I shut the Jeep down. Cycled the ignition and that didn't work but pulling the fuse did. Then just the other day I get a tire pressure warning while driving. Passenger front down to 7lbs. Now of course I would have felt that and I was on my street coming home so I didn’t stop. It cleared before I got home and of course the tire was fine.

All this talk of Maverick and Rivian orders reminds me to provide an update on our ID.4 order.

Just a reminder, the order was placed on April 26. Since then ... nothing. Still waiting for VW to request that I confirm the order, and give them another $400 to do so. After that, the order is locked and sent to production.

Seems that VW is all over the map with fulfilling orders. Some folks have been waiting months for their order to lock, yet others are seeing only a few weeks elapse to get to that stage. Someone reported placing their order in late June, and getting the lock notification just in the past week. Can't seem to figure out what combination of trim and drivetrain might cause this.

The good news is that the TN factory is coming up to speed nicely, and that production cars should be starting to roll off the line this month. A lot of folks (myself included) are hoping this will help clear the backlog in North America.

    Until then, the wait continues.

So I found a new M240i in another state. Nicely optioned out and the price was reasonable. I emailed a salesman and was informed every new car on their site is either already sold or ordered by a customer. The wait for a car built to order is 4-6 months.

And the doc fee is $1,200.

    Sheesh.

Why have it on their site if it’s already sold? That seems designed to PO future customers.

Nothing the dealer can do about it, really.

When I first started to look for at ID.4's, I did a national search and found a car in the right color and trim in Ohio. I called the dealer, only to be told the same thing.

The salesman I spoke with said that when VW of America releases a car to the dealer, it gets added to the dealer website (often run by a 3rd party). Doesn't matter if it's been pre-sold.

Had the same issue with both the Subaru and the MINI. Both cars were on the dealer website, but both needed to be transported to the dealer - the Subaru from the factory in Indiana, the MINI from the docks in Southern California. We put a deposit down on both, and completed the deals when they arrived at the dealer.

    4-6 months! Wow.

I assume there just aren’t that many allocations for the 2 coupe.

On a separate note, I meant to mention a local Hyundai dealer had a new model Civic Sport sedan on their lot. Again…Sport! Not Si. They had the price of $33k proudly displayed in large numbers on the windshield. Sheesh!
That's funny considering a dealer near me has inbound, and as of 2 days ago, unclaimed allocation for a pearl white Si @ MSRP. No add ons either.

I get they don’t have loaners. When I called to make the appointment, I knew that I’d have to rent a car for the day, I also get that I’m paying way under market value compared to the 4Xe ‘s sticker price. They don’t know that. I can’t imagine bringing a $60 something thousand dollar 4 series convertible into a BMW dealership and have them say: “they all leak.”

Do all 4 series convertibles leak?!

The only convertible I’ve had that leaked was a 66 Mustang in high school. My 07 Wrangler was a soft top and once during a deluge when animals were lining up 2 by 2, it had a little trickle at the top of a window.

ZHP, ‘13 BMW and MB E350 were all no problem. The E350, even though a soft top, was very quiet on the highway.

It’s not my cup of tea, but some friends of ours have one of the same era with like 185,000 miles and the thing won’t die (their criteria for getting a new car). Original CVT and everything.

Same, my parents have a 2012 Murano with over 200,000 miles on it and likewise it won't die and they've had no issues to speak of, the CVT is original and working fine.

now that truck is really cool. I can see buying those. Is that a diesel? or a turbo gas engine?

TD. The 2.8TD is supposed to be very reliable, moreso than the 2.5. I bypassed many 2.5s over the past few months waiting for one like this.
Congrats, I really like this one.

Yes sir! It has the six speed, which I think is the only one Subaru still offers.

Why have it on their site if it’s already sold? That seems designed to PO future customers.

I would have thought that BMW would have learned their lesson after all the negative PR and customer complaints they received for charging for CarPlay and then also charging a subscription fee.

Ford does the same thing with customer ordered cars. Caused a lot of confusion (and some angst) among the Maverick crowd, with cars showing up on the dealer website that were actually customer orders. Something about the way the software works (dealers don't maintain that database).

this will be an absolute mess. I can only assume you have to pay for the feature and still have to pay monthly on top of that. So $300 heated seats wind up costing over $1k for the first 5 years. I just don't see how that can be found acceptable. Once you buy a simple on/off device, it is yours to do with as you wish. The only way I could see this working is if you don't charge for it in the first place. And THAT would be fantastic. I'd love to see a mass organization of folks buying such cars LOADED with features that they then don't pay for. BMW would lose a lot of money very quickly.

I guess, if they are smart (and they aren't), the way to go about this would be to call it all pre-paid subscriptions. So you aren't buying heated seats, but you are pre-paying them for the first 3 years. So they still get their cost up front.

I just don’t get it. If they want more money for heated seats just add it to the base price. Who the heck wants a $500+ payment on a BMW and then additional spend just for the features they want.

Who knows? If they get away with it, this may become the new way cars will be sold. If it is, the cars I own now will be the last cars I own. And at my age that’s not impossible.

The heated steering wheel is another $10 a month. Might be ok if you only have to pay during the cold months. :)
I see that GM is charging for 3 years of On Star on the sticker. Probably only some models?
Ford is charging for 3 years of Nav.
Not sure if they backed off, but Toyota was charging for remote start after 3 years.

So I found a new M240i in another state. Nicely optioned out and the price was reasonable. I emailed a salesman and was informed every new car on their site is either already sold or ordered by a customer. The wait for a car built to order is 4-6 months.

And the doc fee is $1,200.

    Sheesh.

    4-6 months! Wow.

I assume there just aren’t that many allocations for the 2 coupe.

You should go snag that Si. You could have some fun with it and then turn around and sell it for no loss I imagine.

The 22 year old top on my convertible doesn’t leak except in a sideways torrential downpour when the rain hits the seam where the glass meets the roof. I’ve had rain for days without a drop but car washes are interesting.
