More like a fact if life thanks to salting so much. I assume they do the same as western NY where they salt the dirt roads too so your chassis gets eaten at 365 days of the year. And Vermont has a lot of dirt roads.

I see there is another car carrier ship fire today and the blame is being initially put on one of the 25 M-B electrics on board (not mentioned in the attached story but Reuters reported the claim separately in a different piece):
I recently read where a big shipping company that operates ferrys in Norway just banned EVs and even hybrids because of the fire hazard. In that piece, they referenced a cargo ship, The Felicity Ace, that caught fire and sank in Feb. 2022, mid Atlantic. Among other things, it was carrying 4,000 new autos, some electrics and hybrids. Fire burned for 14 days and couldn't be extinguished. I don't remember much news coverage on that one here in the U.S. The Felicity Ace is the same ship that was referenced in your story.

Well, that's interesting as Norway has the highest purchase rate of EVs in the world - something like 80% of new vehicles sold are electric.
purists might be cringing. Just read the latest Motor Trend and they had a section on upcoming models, and it included both a 4 door Beetle and a 4 door Camaro. Though unlike the Mustang Mach E, both looked just like the 2 doors, but stretched to add 4 doors. And of course, both were electric.
They also have a Maverick Hybrid now in their long term test fleet (they actually went out and bought one). that should be interesting to see. So far they seem to love it. and said that it does 0-60 in 7.7. So should be OK as long as they stay off the highway when driver is trying to get on.
More a/c issues at home but finally got a knowledgeable a/c tech today who found the issue, a bad capacitator(?) that wasn't working properly. A small metal round thing he showed me after installing the new one. It was a bit warm which he pointed out to me. Seems at a certain point, it was turning the compressor off so the fan still turned, but hot air was coming out of the inside vents. Those times I shut the whole thing down gave things a chance to cool down, the pressure came down & the compressor would work like it should with cold air coming out of the vents. The tech heard what I was telling him unlike the last one last month who said everything was fine. The house is cool now as we're having a slight heat wave and it's in the high 90's daily. The master shower had a leak the other night & woke up to the news Wednesday morning. Plumber couldn't come until Friday afternoon so just not using the master shower. Wife thought it was a slab leak again, as we had one maybe 18 years ago & it was a real expensive mess. But I started playing detective & turned on the shower & immediately saw the issue. The plastic surround on the shower head was arching water over the rather tall pony wall into the bath area. Problem solved with picking up a new shower head. Very happy it was such a small issue as there really were no tell tale signs of a larger leak. Like I told my kids who own their own homes now & as y'all surely know, owning a house is not for the faint of heart. There are always going to be issues coming up be it the plumbing, the electrical, the heating & cooling...whatever, problems are going to crop up from time to time which will need attention. Be it calling, "the guy", or doing it yourself, these issues need to be dealt with in a timely matter to be able to live in your house or condo. Products wear out over time & things need replacing. One just needs the funds to repair these issues & have them taken care of. Same as owning a vehicle...things do happen & it's basically how you handle them & move onto the next issue! Very cool, thanks. I will have to keep an eye out for that. July 67 was nearing the end of the line for fintails, production ended by the end of that year. Some fun things mentioned in the intro there - pretty sure safety glass was standard (and a legal mandate) at that time, but perhaps it has a tinted glass windshield. Power seats/windows were not even optional, and any AC in a fintail was dealer-installed.
Another candidate for a car for my son. I appreciate everyone’s feedback. Found a 2007 or 2008 Ouback for sale locally by me with MD plates. 157K miles on it. Lots of recent maintenance (timing belt, suspension bushings, clutch), but no mention of you know what (head gaskets). So I message him and ask what’s with the MD plates if he’s in Stamford and about the head gaskets. He says he has properties in MD as well as Stamford, hence the MD plates (still sketchy) and his mechanic says the head gaskets look good so there is no reason to change them, but I am welcome to come and take a look for myself. head gasket "looks" good. So how exactly did he take a look at it?
100% that Matrix fender is replaced/repainted. M2 Auto Group's cars have always looked very suspect to me. Autocheck says 3 owners, 1 accident. Not that you care much at the age and pricepoint you are looking at. Price is OK if its clean and needs nothing and there is nothing wrong beyond that one fender.

The first one says page not available. Maybe it sold. The second one looks pretty good. Didn’t one of our posters get something similar (right down to the rust spot) for his beach house? As I recall he was able to repair and rust proof it fairly easy.
That Ford Duratec 25 is supposed to be reliable. 170hp is perfect for a new driver. Just don’t overheat it and it will run a long time.ask if the water pump has ever been changed on that one as it’s a weak spot.

Whew. I ended up working on the car last night until close to midnight. Lucky for me, we still have a lot of light, so it was still quite workable that late. I got the front end put back together, managed to get the front off the stands in a less-than-graceful way, and filled up the transmission with gear lube.
Started the car and....... I couldn't shift gears with the clutch pedal fully depressed! I was quickly coming to mirror the pedal, but then tried a few other things just to see where I stood with things. I could start it when in gear and pedal pressed, but the grab point on the clutch was literally right there on the floor, so it was not fully disengaging. In other words, like that, I could start the car in first gear, then shift through the rest of the forward gears while rev-matching, but would have to shut off the car to put it in reverse, start it, back up, then shut it off to shift to first.... Yeah, not doing that! LOL
I called it a night, then went out this morning and adjusted the pedal's engagement with the master cylinder until it worked properly. I think I still need to fine-tune it, but it's much better now, and so buttery soft.
Installed new ball joints (lower) and steering knuckles.
New front axles and wheel hubs installed.
Brake calipers and rotors on... it's a done deal!

I still need to replace the window regulator on the driver door, and I'd really like to crack open a few seals on the engine to address a slow drip introduced by the short block replacement the dealer did (recall) several years ago. I probably won't get to the leak because we're leaving on our trip in two weeks.

As for the gaskets on @nyccarguy 's potential, it's always a huge red flag when sellers get defensive about their wares. Factory HGs on the EJ25 engines are never a matter of 'if' but 'when,' so I'd say it is unlikely they are completely fine at 150,000 miles. If a seller won't disclose, then you just need to know what to look for. I shared that info previously (black flecks or gunk in overflow bottle; bubbles in overflow after running the engine a while; oil or coolant stains around the lower or rear sides of the head gaskets on the car.

From another forum; the many joys of Hyundai ownership:
"I'm not one to play bash the dealer like so many do. Here is my personal experience with hyundai within the last month.
Got the pleasure of visiting three of them in the San Antonio area, for three different reasons.
#1- 2017 Tucson, Scheduled an appointment for the recall to the anti-theft system to resolve the "TikTok" issue. I scheduled the appointment with the dealer a month in advance. Literature from Hyundai said "takes about an hour" "a simple computer flash".
Drove down there this morning at 730. Dealership is in absolute shambles. Cars waiting for service parked everywhere. Crates of new motors sitting everywhere, and littered all over the place. I'm greeted by a 20 year old service writer with probably 25 sets of keys laying on his desk. "I don't know what they told you, but if you leave it we MAY be able to get to it on MONDAY." Today was saturday. For a one hour computer flash procedure. Told the guy nope and walked out with no service.
I had ordered some trim clips for the same car, and placed a parts request online through the same dealer, and followed up with a phone call. No record of my parts request when I got there, and the kid couldn't figure out how to charge me for the parts so he just gave me them and sent me on my way. 99 cent plastic trim clips.
#2- My wife is assigned an Elantra for her job at the Federal Government. They have a contract with jiffy lube for oil changes and the Hyundai dealer for everything else. She took the car in with an appointment to get 4 tires put on it. Car sat at the dealer for three weeks, dealer never looked at the car. Her supervisor went to the dealer to see what the deal was, and ended up taking the car to another dealer.
#3- Same problem, different dealer, still needs 4 tires put on the car. Dealer #2 takes 4 days to even quote a set of 4 tires, and we are still pending service after a week. Car still parked at dealer #2. I believe the quote was $607 for 4 no name tires on a base model elantra with hub caps.
Back to problem #1 with our personal car needing the computer flash. Called Hyundai corporate. They gave me a case number and suggested that I take the car to a dealer that is 42 miles away from my house for service. I set an appointment with them for September 8th, their earliest booking."

Got my appointment for the kid's Accent on the 24th so hopefully it'll work out. The last recall for the seat belt pre-tensioner went very well actually. They paid for the Lyft to drive me home & pick me back up as they no longer have shuttle drivers it seems. So, I'm hoping for the best come the 24th as the girls will be up in Orlando & I'll be here solo holding down the fort. Only issue is their doing a major remodel at our Hyundai store so things are a bit of a mess over there. But, their service department is pretty good and have had no issues to speak of. Bought my Tucson there back at the end of 2014 & the few times I needed service, they were pretty good, so not anticipating any issues, really. And if the recall is truly only an hour, might just wait for it but we will see. Since we live so close, might just as well go home for the time.

Well, a/c is fixed & working great again. Have it set at 79 right now & the house is really comfortable. Since it's just 5 years old, might go ahead & have them clean the coils or else, wait another year. Just glad to have cold a/c again! As for the bathroom leak, was indeed just a bad shower head. Replaced that & we're good to go. Since the wife wanted to be positively sure that the broken plastic was the only issue, they came out to check things & all was fine. They even checked a sink with a slight drip while they were here, so all is good now. Always seems to be something with a house & now that ours is 36 + years old, things are going to happen. Still need to replace the oven/stove but will have to get the wife over to Lowe's to o k the one I've already chosen. Comes with an air fryer setting which seems to be a good thing even though we don't fry many things. Since my doc told me to cut back on the fried foods after they removed my gall bladder back in 2018, I've done just that & really don't miss it all that much. I just love fried chicken so I do cheat just a little but am cognizant to what my doc told me.

NEXT!

A Matrix is probably a pretty good choice. Roomy, economical and more or less reliable.
Not sure if it’s the lighting or not… but that fender looks darker to me.

That Ford Duratec 25 is supposed to be reliable. 170hp is perfect for a new driver. Just don’t overheat it and it will run a long time.ask if the water pump has ever been changed on that one as it’s a weak spot.

Thanks. I was thinking that the V-6 is the way to go. I saw a really cheap one from Vermont, the entire tailgate was rotting. It was disgusting.
We have/had the Duratec 30 in two of my son’s cars. 205 and 240hp. Except for the aforementioned water pump they were both great engines.

It seems that full size F-150s are going for about the same price as old style Rangers. I might start looking in a new direction to find my unicorn.

Looks incredibly clean. If it was a 6.5’ bed, I’d consider trading my truck for that and a nice fun convertible!

I agree about the looking at it and saying the head gaskets “look good”. I don’t know how to do that but maybe our poster buddy @xwesx does. I’d be very suspicious if I heard that.

I was going to say the same thing. A 2 door truck with an 8 foot bed should have been gone as soon as it was listed. Word of mouth should have sold that truck especially if it has only seen 56K miles once. Gotta wonder what’s going on with that thing.

Congratulations, I’m sure you’re glad that’s done. So what’s next? Oh yeah, you’re gonna do some work on the Subie that @nyccarguy plans to buy for his son. That job might pay.

I still need to replace the window regulator on the driver door, and I'd really like to crack open a few seals on the engine to address a slow drip introduced by the short block replacement the dealer did (recall) several years ago. I probably won't get to the leak because we're leaving on our trip in two weeks.
