big news. I am picking up a minivan at the end of March!
OK, I am picking it up at Farmers stomping grounds to drive to another airport (Newark) and drop it off, but technically I am picking one up!
will actually be my first time driving a minivan since we sold our 2005 Odyssey. I assume they have changed a big since them. And from Hertz, guessing it will be a roached out Pacifica. But I guess it could be a Kia? as long as it has carplay and doesn't smell, I don't really care.

well, plenty of gassers freeze up and die when it gets too cold too.
I've never had that happen, even in negative temps with a decades old carbureted vehicle. Worst thing cold has ever done to a vehicle for me is make the stereo not function.

Telsa has just put the $7500 federal tax credit as a point-of-sale discount on some models, and they are still giving their own discounts on some models too. Here's an example below of a long-range AWD Model Y with the optional blue paint, optional wheels, and optional white interior. The options add up to about $5k, but Tesla is giving those extras away with a $5000 discount from msrp. The 7.5k rebate takes the price down to $40k flat plus tax and license, which is a nice deal for a practical sports car that goes 0-60 in about 5 seconds, but which has nearly as much room inside as a CR-V.
————————————————- Power like that must eat up some battery capacity. So, my question is, how fast can it get to a working Tesla super charger on a cold day?

I remember radios not waking up when it was really cold. These days, with everything being electronic and computerized, cars really don't like being low on juice.

It wouldn’t. Have had the issue in a few vehicles. It never just wakes up. Have to restart the car after the interior is warmed up.

———————————————— I never once had that happen with any car I’ve ever owned going back to the ‘62 Chevy transistor radio I got in ‘63.
I did have to give a little time (maybe 15 or 20 seconds) for the tube radio to warm up in my first car. A used ‘56 Chevy I had in ‘61 and ‘62.

The cables aren't too thick, but I have had to jump the old car a couple times, and it worked fine, only using ~2% of the apparent stored juice when starting the car.
That’s what I need as my old battery charger no longer works reliably. On that one do you recharge it with a wall plug or what?

Not so much since fuel injection replaced carbs. Boy does that bring back memories of pollution control choked carbureted engines bogging down and stalling in the cold.

Currently at farmers stomping grounds (Albany airport) waiting to fly to Dallas. Where it is currently colder than it is up here in the north country. Weird Weather. But supposed to be 56 Thursday and sunny so less likely to be weather related delays coming back home.
The CX-90 seems like it's a better value than the CX-50. The lower-levels of the CX-50 with the non-turbo engine have a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds according to Motor Trend. Even ten years ago that might have seemed fast enough for most, but today I'm not sure. Our 2018 CR-V with the 1.5 turbo has a 0-60 time of 7.5 according to MT, and I don't think we'd want something that's a second slower. Another questionable thing about the CX-50 is that it has a torsion-beam rear suspension, which some reviewers have said means ride and handling that's not quite as good as most other SUVs of that size. Nothing can fix the rear suspension of the CX-50, but the top models do have a turbo that goes 0-60 in about 7 seconds. But by the time you move up to a turbo CX-50 the msrp is $39.5k, and for just 1.5k more you can get a similarly equipped CX-90 select, which has a standard 6-cylinder turbo, plus an independent rear suspension, plus more cargo room, plus a third row seat. Of course few really need something that big, but it seems like "the more you buy the more you save" lol. Having priced out Subarus, there's a similar thing going on there, where the turbo Outback is about the same price as a similarly equipped but larger Ascent, which has a standard turbo.
Musk wants Tesla's Board of Directors to give him $80 billion dollars worth of Tesla stock, or else he might take his artificial intelligence marbles elsewhere. This is around double the amount Musk lost in the purchase of the company formerly known as Twitter.
Meanwhile the EV price war continues. Here's a new base Model Y marked down nearly 6k from msrp. This is the lowest price I've ever seen for a new Model Y. It seems this particular model has perhaps lost the 7.5k federal tax credit for a purchase, but it can still be used for a lease subsidy.
Got the Volt inspected this morning. One of the construction workers at the building was super interested in it and said it was a shame they quit making them. The sheriff deputy asked for the odometer reading and checked the horn, rear turn signals, and high beams. That was the extent of the inspection. The title person the dealer sent there said the clerk would call me when my plates were ready, which is weird, because they’ve always mailed them, in my experience. We’ll see!
Same here. I have issues in the Q7 when the temps are below around -20F. Not always, but not infrequently, either. Once the car warms up a little, I can usually hit the power button and have it come to life. I never, not once, had an issue with the radio functioning in an older car, though (due to cold weather)!

I may not have mentioned this before, so my apologies if I did.
My local friend with the Model Y just recently returned from a trip to pick up a shiny, red Bolt! IIRC, he bought it from a place in Kansas City, drove it to Seattle, and then had it barged to Anchorage. Apparently no issues with charging infrastructure, though he said there were multiple locations that had one or more chargers offline.
I was surprised at how small it is! I'd say it is Fiesta-sized, though perhaps a little taller. It makes great use of the space, though.

In my county, It's VIN and odometer, and that's it. I was a little worried about a windshield crack, one time, but the deputy never said a word about it.
Out of the 14 teams in the NFL playoffs the Steelers were almost certainly the 14th best, though they made it more of a game by coming to within one score, but I still expected that result. But what in the world happened to Dallas and Philly? Moreso Philly because they really collapsed down the stretch and I've come to expect an egg from Dallas once the playoffs start.

From the perspective of a Giants fan, the outcome of the playoffs is great so far. Philly? Out. Dallas? Out. Want to see some good games from here on out. The Detroit story is a good one. Green Bay looked great against the Cowboys. San Fran seems to steamroll over everyone (except when they played Baltimore. Tamap Bay was impressive too.

———————————————— I’m sure I told this story once before on one of these Edmund’s sites but I’ll tell it again. It’s my favorite inspection tale:
When we moved to SC in 1992 they had state inspection. So I asked one of the folks from the Burgh who moved there before me which inspection station they recommended. It so happens there was one very close to apartment complex we were living in until our house was built. It was one of those old time gas stations without a convenience store. So old that it still had mechanical gas pumps with the clicking revolving wheel counters.
Anyway, I pulled up in front of the place that had a large plate glass window. I go in and asked if they could do an inspection or did I have to make an appointment. The guy points to my car and says, “that one”? I shook my head yes. He proceeds to say, “go out to your car and blow the horn. Then turn on your right then left turn signal. After that turn on your low beams and when I put my arm up like this (he raised his arm above his head) turn on your high beams. You got that?” I told him I did and headed out to the car. After I did everything just like he asked he motioned to come into the station. He filled out the sticker and went out to put it on the windshield. I was kinda surprised he didn’t tell me to do it. Since that was such a farce, I think by the next year SC had done away with state inspections. I never had another state inspection after that (we moved back to the Burgh in August of 1997).
Maybe our poster buddy @sda can tell us if SC has reinstated state inspections.

The Philly situation is just bizarre and I haven’t heard anyone with an explanation for it that totally holds together. Losing the two main assistant coach’s in the off-season certainly hurt, losing some starters to free agency hurt too, but I keep hearing that the Head Coach’s behavior wore thin with some and that QB Hurts wasn’t the same guy as he was last year. It’s very odd.
I’m pleasantly surprised he was able to drive from KCMO to Seattle with no charging infrastructure issues! I’m sure he spent a lot of time charging.
Well, not too bad, actually. I mean, he wasn't pushing incredibly long days. Typically two mid-day stops for an hour each and then charged overnight while at hotels. I guess there are a lot of charging stations now at Wal-Marts and shopping centers, so he could stop and charge while getting something to eat and/or walking around.

It is the consistency that sets the Rooneys apart from some of these other crackpot owners who fire coaches after 1 or 2 seasons year after year. He's only their 3rd head coach since the merger? I know the game itself was disappointing, but the fact that he made the playoffs with how the team started out the season is impressive.

———————————————— You sound like the national media who are in love with Tomlin. You will find almost none of that love here in the Burgh. Not having a losing season in 17 years around here means absolutely nothing. Maybe folks where you live who root for the Giants or the Jets would be happy with a few non losing seasons and maybe an occasional playoff season. A different standard was set around here and that standard has not been met. One of Tomlin’s favorite sayings is, “the standard is the standard” and unfortunately that’s what we’ve been getting, his standard, not the one that preceded him.
Maybe the best way to explain this to you is, I know you’re a Yankees fan. Would you be happy if the Yankees never won a playoff game in 7 years? I’m sure I know the answer to that question. Well that’s what Steelers fans have been living with and lately when they lose a playoff game they’ve been blown out. Just getting to the playoffs isn’t good enough around here. As far as I’m concerned it would be better not to get there than getting there and being embarrassed.
Just because the Rooney’s don’t make changes very often doesn’t mean they shouldn’t when a team performs as badly as the Steelers have for as long as they have.
The very sad part of this is, many folks are in the same boat as I’m in, namely, we’ve resigned ourselves to the fact that until Tomlin is gone we will continue to get what we’ve been getting. Not what a fan wants to look forward to. And maybe even worse we might not be fans anymore. Repetitive losing will do that to you.

Not sure why people are trying to blame Hurts. Maybe some things here or there. Like that bizarre play yesterday where he could have easily gotten rid of the ball prior to the safety. And his scrambling was way down from previous years. And his INTs were way up from last year. But even all of that pales into comparison to the other issues.
The far more significant problem this year has been the defense, which is odd considering they’ve always been a top defense for many years now. How did they become so soft this year? Pass rushing, again at the top of the league just last year, was worst ever. The secondary never seemed to be where they needed to be, leaving receivers isolated in the middle of the field time and again. And the missed tackles? Wow! Like watching PeeWee league.
A very close second was the play calling. Not just deplorable, but predictably deplorable. We could actually watch and say “what is the smart play right here? OK, now they will do the opposite.” 3rd and short? Deep shot. 3rd and 15? Run up the middle.

In a way it’s surprising since both he and Cleveland’s owner Haslam, were minority owners of the Steelers for a while. Doesn’t look like either of those guys adopted the Rooney Way.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing there is a lot of ground in the middle.

Are you trying to say the cold weather wouldn’t allow the radio to drive 2 channels. How long did it take to warm up?

It wouldn’t. Have had the issue in a few vehicles. It never just wakes up. Have to restart the car after the interior is warmed up.

I never once had that happen with any car I’ve ever owned going back to the ‘62 Chevy transistor radio I got in ‘63.
I did have to give a little time (maybe 15 or 20 seconds) for the tube radio to warm up in my first car. A used ‘56 Chevy I had in ‘61 and ‘62.

Currently at farmers stomping grounds (Albany airport) waiting to fly to Dallas. Where it is currently colder than it is up here in the north country. Weird Weather. But supposed to be 56 Thursday and sunny so less likely to be weather related delays coming back home.

I think it may be more of a touchscreen issue.

We’ll see!
So where’s the after pic?

My local friend with the Model Y just recently returned from a trip to pick up a shiny, red Bolt! IIRC, he bought it from a place in Kansas City, drove it to Seattle, and then had it barged to Anchorage. Apparently no issues with charging infrastructure, though he said there were multiple locations that had one or more chargers offline.
I was surprised at how small it is! I'd say it is Fiesta-sized, though perhaps a little taller. It makes great use of the space, though.
I’m pleasantly surprised he was able to drive from KCMO to Seattle with no charging infrastructure issues! I’m sure he spent a lot of time charging.
Maybe a few minor issues but certainly no “issies”.

I was a little worried about a windshield crack, one time, but the deputy never said a word about it.

I’m sure I told this story once before on one of these Edmund’s sites but I’ll tell it again.

Nobody I spoke with before or after the Steelers game was delusional enough to have picked them to win that game. They are just a pathetic ghost of what they once were.
Why they have stuck with Tomlin this long is the $64 million question.

No inspection in SC. A reason our insurance rates are not low. Neighbor NC has vehicle inspections. Renewing your tag is linked to having passed the annual inspection. No pass, no tag renewal.

You sound like the national media who are in love with Tomlin.
I could rant all day but you have to see where I’m coming from.

Well, that’s a cross no one can carry.
Even with his history of firing coaches quickly I doubt he’ll have too much trouble finding another head coach. After all, there are only 32 of those jobs so why not take it ? In a year, 2 at the most, he’ll be paying you to sit on your [non-permissible content removed]. Nice work if you can get it. I’ll do it for half of what a real head coach wants.
In a way it’s surprising since both he and Cleveland’s owner Haslam, were minority owners of the Steelers for a while. Doesn’t look like either of those guys adopted the Rooney Way.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing there is a lot of ground in the middle.
