I assume this is a 1 time deal (as in, you aren't planning to haul everything you own on a regular basis).
and as others noted, usually better (and safer) to use the right tool for a job.
so unless you can honestly say will will need an F350 long term, makes no sense to buy it for 1 trip.
Better off running the numbers for different scenarios. Hiring pros might be too expensive, but how about renting a truck capable of doing the towing? Not sure what you can find on a 1 way rental out of Alaska though... Unless you want to drive it back?
The other option? Lighten the load. Sell off everything that isn't vitally important, or an heirloom. And that includes the civic. Heck, just get rid of the Civic and some heavy furniture pieces, and the F150 should be OK. Or drive the Civic if you insist on keeping it!
I like selling the civic though. For the price differential to get into a new truck (which you will soon get out of!), trade up to a new car when you arrive.
I'm guessing based on the miles this is a haul down to Texas? The F150 will love just right down there!
Well, often times a manufacturer will offer either an incentive rebate on a car or an incentivized interest rate.
So, it's not so much a "fee" for financing through the manufacturer, but you do "give up" the cash rebate. So that's why it didn't show up on the paperwork - you may have been able to save $250 on the overall cost of the car if you had arranged your own financing, but for the 0.9% rate, it seems worth the "cost."
We only bought two cars in '11, although a couple of doozy's! So, we are a three car, two garage family. Luckily, the winter of '11 wasn't so much!
Cape Cod BMW emailed me, $5000 off msrp on all '11 328xi in stock, 0.9% and BMW picks up the first two payments. Hmmm, $5k is a good start...
'21 Dark Blue/Black Audi A7 PHEV (mine); '22 White/Beige BMW X3 (hers); '20 Estoril Blue/Oyster BMW M240xi 'Vert (Ours, read: hers in 'vert weather; mine during Nor'easters...)
It looks like if you take the Civic out of the equation, your weight would be just about right.
I'm assuming buying a trailer would be cheaper than renting? I guess you could sell the trailer and get most of your money back, especially, if you buy it used.
Good luck on your new adventure! Where ya goin?

Between this post and nyc's new BMW, I thought I'd take a quick look at the inventory at the local BMW dealer.
53 2011 3-series. Lowest price is around $39K (MSRP) for a 328xi - Oyster blue with black interior. Convenience, premium, automatic, value package. Figure $5K off and $4-5K in trade, and the sales price would be right around $30K.
Ugh. Why do I torture myself so?
ak, best of luck on your move .. is this due to your daughter's medical treatment?
I assume this is a 1 time deal (as in, you aren't planning to haul everything you own on a regular basis).
Yes it is a one time thing. We aren't 100% sure where we are going to end up, if we get our way and get the base we want then it will only be 3000 miles. I'm pretty sure the truck can pull 10k lbs, especially once we get out of the mountains. The only thing we are lacking from the similar F-150s rated to tow higher is the rear axle ratio. Mine has 3.55 vs 3.73. Other than that it has trans cooler, bigger radiator, factory trailer brake controller, trailer sway control, and we will put a weight distribrution system on the trailer.
We have had driveline problems with the truck, the transfer case was replaced at 10k miles and its been fussy off and on since then.....transmission and 4WD issues. Nothing the dealer can duplicate though.
As for selling the Civic, at 100k miles the car isn't worth much so doesn't make much sense to sell it. Its reliable and hubby doesn't want to spend the money to buy a new car, especially since he will be taking a VERY steep pay cut in order to move out of Alaska. There won't be any new cars in our future for a long long time.
We are cutting our household goods down to almost nothing and putting the Civic in the trailer means we drive one vehicle out. I have no idea if I'll be able to drive or not and don't want the stress of driving anyway, especially not the Alcan even though I've done it before with a trailer.
I checked into a uhaul with a trailer for a Civic and the cost is nuts when you figure in gas for it and the truck.......again I'd have to drive. Professional movers are out of the question plus it throws the driving back into the equation.
So, it boils down to push the F-150 once or trade it down for a used 3/4 ton, one around 5-6 years old in the 15k-20k range.
goes back then IMO to what you would rather have when you get there, the F150 or a 250/350 (whatever you end up with). Because if the big truck is just for the trip, it would likely still be cheaper to replace the civic than to swap out trucks.
amazing that 3,000 miles would be the 'close" option. that is like me driving to California from NJ!

Ideally we'd want the F-150 and the Civic when we get to where we are going. Honestly I don't want to get rid of the truck, its fairly reliable and at almost a year old only has 16k miles on it. The Civic has been a great car and hubby will still need a commuter.
Main reason for the move is to get somewhere cheaper and where we want to retire. Retiring in Alaska is NOT an option, holy cow its expensive up here! Hubby can retire in just over a year, but doesn't have to. Hard to believe its already time to think about retirement.
I won't miss being so isolated from our family, hard to visit very often when one plane ticket costs nearly $800 and you have to buy 4 plus pay a ton of extra baggage fees to haul all of the kid's medical equipment. I also won't miss $4.15/gal for gas, $4 for a gal of milk, and $2.50 for a dozen eggs!
up to you if you are willing to do that trip with an overloaded trailer and packed full truck.
also, I would assume that if you do damage the truck (blow the trans say) if they can figure out that you towed that much weight, it would be a big warranty denial.
Not like they don't sell cheap hi mile cars in the lower 48!
Because, we are car people. And, some, CCBs! I tortured myself for years re: The Jag. And, Luke, I was weak and went to the Dark Side last year. Well, the Platinum Silver with black interior side...
And now, of course, I've got a roving eye anew.
'21 Dark Blue/Black Audi A7 PHEV (mine); '22 White/Beige BMW X3 (hers); '20 Estoril Blue/Oyster BMW M240xi 'Vert (Ours, read: hers in 'vert weather; mine during Nor'easters...)
I'd love to buy, but have just been too damned broke!
Though I do need to add another car at the end of the year (when my daughter can solo) so am really looking forward to getting something just for me. Hopefully I can do better than a '92 Grand Am...
and the wife does have a serious bug to trade out of the minivan as soon as feasible. So this quite possibly could be a 3 car year, though if so, most likely I will be shut down for a decade after that! Unless, of course, I buy cheap and amuse my self by rotating inexpensive cars every year or 2.
I like this one too. Given where it is, probably owned by a guy that had the money to treat it right.
Hopefully when I actually need a car I find stuff like this.
right now, I am seriously leaning toward getting some variant of E46, if not the 2 seat 3 or 4. Other thing that keeps getting my eye is an Eclipse convertible, but finding one of those that was well maintained and not beaten on is hard to do!
My only problem with the Eclipse convertible is that it may have bigger blind spots than my Solara which takes some doing! Neat car.
Thanks! This nice NYC address would be a lot nicer if I were allowed out of the building - or even my room for the first month! I'll still be posting - just as the boy in the bubble....
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
I know what you mean about the blind spots though. I suspect I will end up getting a car with a fixed top though, as long as it was going to be my only car/daily driver. A convert will work a lot better if it is a toy, and that isn't happening soon.
But, a coupe of some kind will work just fine now, since I will almost never need the back seat.
Financing for 60 months = $691/month Leasing for 30 months (20K per year allotment) = $570/month
So in 30 months the car will have 50K miles on it. I can either turn it in or buy it out. I can buy another off lease 328xi with less miles for similar money (CPO) or maybe a CPO 5 series.
Comments welcome as always.

well, in addition to what I added on the other site, the distinct advantage of knowing in 2.5 years you will be needing to shop again, and can try out something new.
and don't worry, there will be a glut of these 2011s coming off lease right around that time frame!
well, the only fair comparison to a lease is a no money down purchase. And pretty sure that is what was happening here, though you are right it doesn't make sense, since the purchase was ~38.5k with some trade equity, so even with taxes, should be well under 40K financed.
Hard to say without the option list... It has power seats and wood trim... probably means it has the premium package with leather, rain sensing wipers, etc, but hard to tell... (oh yeah.. it has xenons... that's good)
I like that it has factory 17" wheels vs. the stock 16".. with all-seasons and stock XI suspension, will still have a nice ride..
If it's nice, that isn't a bad price.. Not likely to find many 66K, 9-yr old sedans.. Of course, at that age, it's due for a cooling system overhaul. I've been trying to convince my friend to do his... That's the '03 325i that I sold him six years ago (plus his has close to 90K on it).. Of course, he doesn't want to spend the money on something that isn't broken...
For apples to apples, you can't use the $3800 equity in the Acura for a downpayment.... unless you also apply that to the lease (for comparison purposes)..
But, otherwise, your numbers look good...
One definite savings on buying vs. lease... no acquistion fee... that's $725-$925..
If he definitely only wants the car for 50K miles, it will almost always be cheaper to lease... with zero down, you probably won't have any equity in that car after just 30 months and 50K big miles...
I'm going to see if I can answer everyone's questions here.
Craig - you are correct, it is a lot of money to rent a car. In another 2 1/2 years, my TSX will have 100,000 miles. I know that's not a lot for a Honda, but the car will need a decent amount of maintenance during the next 50K miles (Brakes, Tires, I use synthetic oil, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid). I know buying (or leasing) a new car is much more expensive.
In NYCs post he mentioned 64% residual. That is pretty good to me.
NYC in your case I would lease this car. BMW will pay for all the maintenance the entire time you own it, and it's all calculated cost. If you wanted to trade out in 30 months you could very easily be upside down.
30 months is kind of an oddball number but if BMW is thinking a 2.5 year old car with 40,oo is going to be worth 64% of it's original MSRP than they seem to really be taking a chance.
But, they've done this in the past and they suffered greatly when those cars went through the auction.
I suppose with this in mind, it's not a bad lease.
Was out doing errands with the wife today, so we stopped at the mazda dealer. Funny how she now has the bug, and doesn't fight it anymore!
Sat in a CX7 and CX5. Overall, I liked the 5 better, and thought the interior was better done. Content wise it was better too. 7 probably ends up cheaper though, but hard to get apples to apples.
Wife drove a CX5 (I didn't bother to take a lap also, but will do so at some point). I thought it was fine to ride in. Comfortable, nice engine sound, etc. She liked it, but it was not a real long drive. I would say that overall it will be fine power wise. Still, she would have to get used to a much smaller cargo area, but I think it was big enough (Barely). Not as roomy as the Santa Fe though. But, much better mileage ratings.
Tons of neat features on it. We drove a touring, but after sitting in both and evaluating the equipment, I would go with a Grand Touring. A FWD GT without the tech package (don't need anything in it really) would sticker at right about 28K, so about the same (or slightly cheaper than) a CR-V EX-L.
still a couple more options to drive, and I really want to see the new Escape when it comes out.
I checked out a CX5 while my MS3 was being serviced. Very nice. My wife might actually consider swapping her X3 for one if my dealer(Kings Mazda) was located in Louisville instead of Cincy- although our BMW dealer treats us so well it would still be a tough decision.
Mine: 1995 318ti Club Sport-2020 C43-1996 Speed Triple Challenge Cup Replica

seemed to have a lot of neat features and clever design that you don't appreciate in a quick look over. I would have to drive one, but assuming the power is adequate, it would be a nice choice. For what we do with it, most likely will be fine now. I would guess it is comparable to a previous generation CRV, which lots of people seem to be fine with!
I still am not a fan of this ever increasing rim diameter. One of the reasons (besides being cheap) that I was looking at the touring model instead of GT was the wheels.
225/65-17 vs. 225/55-19. seems silly on a small SUV with a 2.0 engine, designed for efficiency.
anyway, checked tirerack. In the 17", 57 choices from $99/each. the 19" size? 1 choice (a Kuhmo) for a whopping $220! Now, barring a damage replacement, there may be more choices in a few years when it becomes an issue, but they really would have been better served going with something smaller, at most 18".
Honda did the same thing with the 2005 odyssey redesign. the touring had weird run flats (bad idea!), and the normal tire was a strange size with almost no options, even 3 years later when I needed replacement.
yeah, in the case of the Mazda, you are stuck with the 19" to get an 8 way power seat and the heated leather. Also comes with some other niceties, but those are the big ticket items I can remember!
not a deal breaker, but still IMO silly. Ideally I will only buy tires once in the next 8+ years, so the extra few hundred $$ is not huge. But, a bigger problem with an oddball is if you have a tire failure on the road, odds are you will be stuck since a local tire shop won't have anything in stock. At least is comes with a big honking temp spare!
Well... you shouldn't be stuck with a crappy ride in a small SUV, either... that's my biggest complaint.. I'm used to that in my car, but for a utilitarian vehicle, you shouldn't have to worry about every road imperfection...
There is a Volt commercial where a new owner says that a lot people don't really understand how the Volt works.. and, I realized that I didn't either..
I mean.... I know you plug it in... and then it runs on battery power only until it runs out of juice.. then, it switches over to the gas engine... But, does the battery not recharge off of the engine after that? So, it's battery.. then gas only, until you can plug it in, again? That seems kind of lame. It's great that you can't get stranded (vs. all-electric Leaf), but how efficient is that going to be on a road trip? A 1500 mile trip where you only get 35 miles of electric use?
Compared to a Prius, which may be mostly gas on the highway... but, at least regenerates the battery while moving or braking, so you get the benefit of superior fuel mileage..
So... will the plug-in Prius regenerate the battery charge while driving, just like the current one? That would seem to be the best of all scenarios..
Not that I'm interested in any of this for myself.... just wondering..
NYcarguy got me thinking. maybe I should buy myself something a little nicer at the end of the year (with the proceeds from selling the Odyssey), and lease my wife's next car? That way I won't have the issue of coming up with cash for 2 cars at the same time (for the down payment on a buy). Everyone gets what they need with no net cash outflow (a big plus) and without giant payments (a bigger plus!)
doing the math, that would have me covered until my daughter gets out of college (last tuition payment, December 2017!) if I buy right or just churn cars that cost the same amount, and my wife would get another new car in the middle (probably another lease). Once the 2nd lease is up, we shold be well out of tuition range!
I know, trying to justify. But I got real attracted to the 2003 BMW I found the other day, and already have gotten a bug for new. So either way, the plan of finding something cheaper (like 5K) is not looking good.
And I tried the idea of getting a new economical sedan and keeping the van, but that got shot down fast (unless of course I was getting the van!)
I doubt we would do it anyway. Just trying to figure out a way my wife and I can both get our cake!
I am leaning toward just buying her car with the intent to keep it for a long time, and staying in a price range (mid-upper 20s) that won't take too long to pay off. The CX-5 is going to be high on the list, and I am anxious to see the upcoming escape. Once the discounts and rebates hit, and one the way we want it can be had for 25-26K, bingo.
I drive so few miles (especially if we get something nicer for travel) that moderate priced used will be fine for a while. And E46s continue to depreciate!

Financed over 60 months at .9% is around $620.
Not to mention they make the first two payments up to $500 each?
But, otherwise, your numbers look good...
One definite savings on buying vs. lease... no acquistion fee... that's $725-$925..

Selling price: $38,746
Sales Tax (6.35%): $1285.62
Total Amount Financed: $40,031.62
Leasing is for 30 months (.0018 mf & 64% residual) with $0 Cap Cost Reduction.
Either way, I'm going to take a check for the equity in my TSX & use it for payments.
I did post on another board that many of you frequent, so I do apologize for the redundancy.

The fact it's a 20K lease throws me a bit. Unless you KNOW you are going to drive it that much you might be better off with a lower mileage lease.
I'll admit, I've been spoiled with Hondas because they have such great resale value that the high residuals keep payments down.
NYC in your case I would lease this car. BMW will pay for all the maintenance the entire time you own it, and it's all calculated cost. If you wanted to trade out in 30 months you could very easily be upside down.

The sticker on my TSX was about $32K IIRC. So after 2 1/2 years, depreciation on my TSX is $450/month. It is worth 57% of its original value.

Honda did the same thing with the 2005 odyssey redesign. the touring had weird run flats (bad idea!), and the normal tire was a strange size with almost no options, even 3 years later when I needed replacement.

not a deal breaker, but still IMO silly.

Not that I'm interested in any of this for myself.... just wondering..

doing the math, that would have me covered until my daughter gets out of college (last tuition payment, December 2017!) if I buy right or just churn cars that cost the same amount, and my wife would get another new car in the middle (probably another lease).
