    I like that a lot.

little stiff on miles, and it has to be the color combo (and black interior) I swore off! But, does look like a pretty nice deal.

Took the wife and kid out to walk the car lot today (hey, it was only 103!). Finally saw an Acura (an ILX) in Amber Brownstone. Turns out the wife was indifferent. She did like black (ugh), but we also saw a dark gray (Graphite luster) that would probably be the winner if we went that way.

and while out, my daughter started mentioning that if I wanted to keep the Volvo ("her" car) we could look for something else for her, and that I should send her the link to some used car dealers! Might have something to do with some of her crowd making fun of having a Volvo, but not sure...

Could do that, and get her something cheaper, but I have no burning desire to keep driving it, and that certainly doesn't qualify as my fun/toy car!

Hey, I bought this year already. How about you?

and don't use that "I had to be in sterile isolation" excuse. Where there is a will, there is a way!

in our case, might be a wrinkle. We came to the conclusion today that the hall (my daughter's) bathroom was pretty ratty, and really needs updating. And she was not big on waiting 2 years until she was gone. So, we stopped by and priced out all the goods required for a remodel. Need to find out what the contractor would want for the work part of the job. But, if this happens now, it may put the wife's new wheels on hold for a while!

Depends on how you look at "this year." Last 12 months? Check. 2012? No, sorry....

I have my fun with you because it's like shooting fish in a barrel.... Also because it sounds all too much like I'm talking about myself....

I hope I don't get that remodel bug though we are putting in more hardwood floors.....

my experience? Once you fix one part of the house, it makes the rest look even shabbier. Slippery slope my friend.

and why pick on me? I have one punch on the card in 2012, and likely will have 2 more by the end of the year (unless we run out of cash, and hold off on the wifemobile a little longer). But I think she will get something anyway. I might get stiffed though...

the bathroom was kind of a "on the fly" decision today. But, I still need to get the labor cost component, but the materials (vanity, tub, fixtures) was not that bad.

Now, if you want someone that is all hat no cattle, it's that roadburner guy.

You may have to wait a while. My daughter dropped by today and somehow mentions about how great babies are and I informed her that we have been out of the business for some time and the baton has been passed. The next one coming will be from her or her older sister..... Both have steady boyfriends but I'm not expecting anything soon and that's fine by me at the moment.

In the meantime, I think I'll just tempt stickguy with alot of car for the money.

If that Legacy GT was a wagon and closer to me, I'd be all over it. But I almost bought a sedan just like that back in '06, but I had yet to wrap my brain around what a couple instances of minor paint work did to the trade value of my Accord.

and Subaru does still make the wagon. But like Volvo, they have to slap plastic on the side and jack up the ride height and call it an SUV to get anyone to buy it.

To my mind, they turned the Impreza/WRX/Outback Sport wagons into hatchbacks in '08, and they turned the Outback into an SUV in '10. Volvo may call their XC70 an SUV, but it's still a wagon. The same cannot really be said for the current-generation Outback.

man, you can spend all day looking at videos on Youtube of anything. Was googling for some pictures of the upcoming new Santa Fe, and there are a ton of videos of the thing out there. Including from overseas with people driving them.

That is a nice looking package. And seems that it will be roomy. Can't wait to see it in person.

we thought about it, but with the amount of work to subcontract and supervise (plumbing, tile, installing a cast iron tub...) there isn't that much more for the contractor guy to do.

and my wife got spooked off when she discovered it involved demolition of the existing tub, and installing drywall. Among other things.

Visited with my 91 year old uncle who would be at home here. During the late 50's through the late 60's he got a new Cadillac convertible every year for 1k plus the trade-in. I drove his 63 white over red convertible to my my senior prom. White leather interior and smooth as silk. He said he liked not buying tires or doing any repairs and he enjoyed the changes they made on a yearly basis.

Somehow, Amber Brownstone sounds like a fancy term for BROWN.

Used cars that were brown never sold..." Stay around brown" yet I'm seeing more and more new cars that are, well...brown. What's up? Are people liking brown now?

Same with gold. If we got a phone call on a used car, we NEVER said it was gold. Instant turn off! It was always "beige" ot "heather mist" or something like that.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,466
hard to describe the color. definitely not brown. sort of a grayish tan? It looked OK, but my wife thought it might end up being trendy, or not aging well. In any case, she moved off it.

the color selection on the RDX in our opinion is weak. A lot the same, nothing in any sort of blue.

so, she liked the black, but I thought it was too flat (not sparkly/metallic enough). That pretty much left the graphite (dark gray metallic).

still thinking that the Hyundai or Subaru will end up being the winner, but we shall see.

Brown has been a growing trend for a couple years. I have seen several Volvo SUVs in brown.

MB has a brown called "cuprite", a darker brown that is very early 80s looking to me, a shade darker than the old MB "tobacco brown". If I couldn't get an E63 wagon in quartz blue, cuprite would be a second choice, very seldom seen color.

if you like a base AT 3 series, and don't mind black over black.

actually, just realized why I started this post. Online, listed at $14,990 (still might be OK price). But, in the Sunday paper ad, list at $12,990. So, I read the fine print, and yup. "all prices listed include $2,000 cash or trade".

certainly explains why they seemed to be quite reasonable for a new car dealer!

i think you somehow cursed me. I was replacing the internals of the toilet in our master bath and wound up cracking the porcelain. So I had to install a whole new toilet last night.

Now its "well, maybe this signals the start of the renovation." We've lived with our bathroom as is for the 8 years we've lived there because the way I WANT to renovate it is going to be expensive. And, yes, I would need someone to build the shower for me because I have a custom plan in mind. I've done a couple of bathrooms before and it was always relatively inexpensive. This will be very different.

I can replace a toilet or a vanity, swap out faucets, that kind of stuff.

But getting into breaking out a tub, installing a new cast iron one, extensive tiling, I am not up for that at my age!

and when we did out master, it was a custom build (framing, membrane, etc. instead of a dropping in a pan) with a seat and stuff like that. No way I could ever have done that.

well you need to hire help just to CARRY the cast iron one. I'm more of a jet tub kinda guy.

This talk is making me want to get an estimate on ours ... but our first vacation in 4 years is coming up in December, so I can't really afford to lay out the cash for such a renovation.

Of course, I could sell the 540 and use that money for the bathroom instead of another car .... but that's just crazy talk!

You guys have cursed me. My wife and I have been trying to upgrade floors for a bit. Putting hardwood in the bedroom and she wanted vinyl in the family room while I was going with wood.

She lined up the job thinking I was stuck on the hardwood when I had actually mentally conceded to the vinyl. That's considerably more money. Should have gone with her cheapskate tendency.

prices can be all over the place. Even for the same job.

but, if you are willing to participate and do some of the work, it can save enough to splurge on the good stuff (like the fancy shower).

In my case, I removed the old kitchen tile (a hard way to "make" 1K), and did all the painting, which also gets expensive to hire out. So pick and choose what you can take over.

That's a good idea. Do what you can, the savings can really add up.

My brother and his wife put a nice size addition on their home and the only things they had done were the foundation and structure. My brother and his father in law (Bob Vila clone) did the rest. It took a lot longer, but saved probably 20K.

I'm just a glutton for punishment and did my whole kitchen myself (with my cousin's help). Never again.

I guess if you have never been there, I would goto the Empire State Building (I think you can still go to top).

I would want to see the contruction of the Freedom Tower

Rockefeller Center (where the big Christmas tree is put up)

    St Patrick's Cathedral

    Central Park

    USS Intrepid

The list could go on forever. I would think you need to pick your "must-dos" and then go with the flow.

I think he probably means laminate.

Personally, I prefer the engineered wood. The 3/4" interlocking stuff looks just like hardwood for much less money, and is easier to install.

I did our kitchen completely by myself. Even knocked out the soffit so I could install full-height cabinets.

In that case, I had designed the kitchen myself and went to Lowes with a list of the cabinets and just placed the order (I worked kitchen design at Home Depot for a little while when I was in between jobs). So I just didn't trust anyone to do it right. Did the whole thing in about 5 days (way to spend a vacation).

Oh, wait, I ALMOST did the whole kitchen. I did have the granite countertops installed at the end. Can't say I know how to cut and polish granite, nor do I have the tools for it.

And this wasn't just a replacement job. It was a full relayout. I'm pretty proud of the job, being my first kitchen. The only thing we skimped on in the end was the floor. Ceramic tile was the preference, but we wound up coming across a clearance deal on just enough faux wood that we couldn't resist. Cost us $350 (and this is real thin stuff; like 3/16" stick-on). Figured if we got 2 years out of it, we'd be in good shape. It has now been over 6 years and it still looks fine.

But, yeah, it helps so you can spend where it counts. We bought all the cabinet upgrades and the aforementioned granite.

    Q,

Sounds just like my kitchen. Cabinets from Lowes, Granite, and laminate flooring from lumber liquidators. The stuff was pretty thick (1/2" with added foam pad).

I gutted down to studs, removed the soffit (relocated the wires running through it), new drywall, new plumbing and electrical. It came out nice, but still really small.

We had to go pick out our granite slab from some place up in Edison. It was pretty cool getting to see all the choices.

We did a little 5 X 12' area in our lower level that the bar sits on... in laminate.. works well on the concrete floor..

We pulled up some carpet in our last house, and it had the engineered wood underneath (in a dining room).. We were actually able to sand and refinish it... the floor guy said that he could probably even do it one more time, if needed.... I was impressed... I think that top layer is 1/8"..

our kitchen is average, I guess, at 13x10. It does have an eating area, though, so I was able to convince the wife to let me take over one wall of the eating area to put built-in separate fridge and freezer. That helped give us more cabinet and counter space in the kitchen area.

Edison is where ours came from, too, I believe. But we didn't go pick it out. We went through that Sears-owned place up there in Woodbridge.... ummm....can't remember the name. I'm not even sure its there anymore.

I'm really surprised that this crowd isn't remodeling (and expanding) your garages. Epoxy floors, fancy tool chests, floor to ceiling cabinets, lifts and dollys.

Let me guess - "honey, we can get the X3 and with the killer lease I tracked down, there's enough left over to redo the kitchen for you." :P

(floating floors have been my specialty, and I can paint).

My garage remodel ... well, actually addition... would cost more than my house. I don't know if I'll ever get to do it. I already have a fancy toolchest and tire machine.

It involves 3.5 bays about 30 feet deep, an in-floor lift, heated floors, and a full-height loft in which a man cave ... I mean "great room," honey... shall reside. The 2-car attached garage stays for the daily drivers.

I do need to epoxy my current floor... or buy those interlocking vinyl tiles... but i really don't want to clear out my garage. Not even sure how I'd get the tire machine out of there. Compressor would be bad enough.

Tire machine? One that balances tires, or mounts them, or both? Sounds like there isn't much you need a mechanic for!
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,751
for dismounting and mounting. The balancer is separate. Just a little bubble balancer, but it never fails.

The downside is I have a loft full of tires. About 38 tires and 12 wheels at last count. Some good, some bad. I did just make a deal to sell my extra set of VW wheels and R-comps, though. There are probably a dozen or so tires I need to take to a recycle center when I get around to it. And another 8 or so I need to sell.

seriously, though, yes, I have a tire machine. When you go through as many as I do, it is well worth it. It has paid for itself about 10 times over by now. Helps that I bought it slightly used from a shop that went out of business. It is nothing terribly fancy, but it gets the job done (sometimes with a great deal of grunting and cursing from me, especially from low profile runflats!).
