$7k for a car driven less than 8000 miles a year is pretty nice. Do the wagons go for a better price than BMW sedans? I mean do they lack the "sexy" factor?
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Wow.... can't believe you found two non-AWD wagons... nice score..
Of course, I like the green with the Sport package.. (note, 17" wheels vs. 16" on the non-sport).
X3s? I was searching for 2011 models (1st year of re-design).. High $30Ks for non-CPO.... low $40Ks for CPO... that's a lot... you could get a brand new XC60 for that..
Yeah, the supply of used X3s is pretty low, and the prices are optimistic to say the least. As my wife says, for that much, might as well buy new.
I love the green one too. Showed my wife, who liked it. Told me if I wanted it, and it was a good car/deal, to just go get it. If the experts validate the $, and it is still there by Saturday (at least Fri), I just might go take a run at it.
Of course, in the ongoing saga of the Wife's new car, that would put a serious wrinkle into the plan. Though when we were reviewing my spreadsheet at breakfast (yes, I have a spreadsheet for all this), and discussing options, she did say she could always wait a bit. She wants a new car, but does not actually need one.
so, the choice may become get something more basic now, or wait a bit for something fancier. If she goes fancy now, I probably just do without my own car, and bum off the ladies in the house (2 cars for 3 people)
Fortunately my wife and I are on the same page with respect to new vs. used. Let's see... a new Accord/Altima/Camry/Fusion/Malibu or a CPO 328i for the same money(or less). Yeah, that's a tough one.

You're paying $10k more for the 2008 than for that 2002 wagon with less milage. Is the sexyness of the coupe worth it? If you were up here in the rust belt those extra six years might take a real toll on the body but in your area not so much.
From a practical standpoint I'd take the wagon.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
my wife just likes to have something new for herself. She doesn't like the idea that other people have spent time stinking up the interior, etc. And they almost always look used!
though she would probably be OK with a real late model (say, 2011) low mile example, if it was indistinguishable from new. The problem is, what we are looking at did not exist back then, or if you can find one, it costs darned near as much as new.
besides, she deserves it, and we will be keeping whatever she gets for a long time. Or 3 years, if we lease!
Juice suggested I come over here and post my buying story for the '11 Fiesta I purchased a few days ago, but I must say that I am way out of my league here!
I ended up replacing my '98 Escort (manual trans) with the aforementioned '11 Fiesta SES hatchback, also with MT. I wasn't actually planning on doing this until next spring (probably May or June), but considering it was optioned out exactly as I wanted (except the color), had less than fourteen thousand miles, and was about five grand less than new, I decided I just couldn't pass it up.
It was one-owner with an in-service date of June 27, 2011, so it has nearly two years of factory warranty left on it (and plenty of mileage to make use of that). It is a fun little car and has good passenger space in it (which means it should be able to keep up with two growing kids!).
Now I'm prepping the Escort for sale; hopefully someone will be able to get some more good use out of it.

that'll probably raise a few eyebrows and ruffle a few feathers. Not something most people would expect to see in my yard...
As Lionel Jefferson once said, of an uncle who was a police officer...this one's the white sheep of the family! :P
Okay, disclaimer...my roommate's Xterra had to go in the body shop, as the result of a 2001 Elantra that tried to commit suicide on his rear bumper. And this was the loaner he got.
Is it generally better to fix and then trade a vehicle (deer hit with fender and hood damage) or would it be better to trade it as is and have the dealer fix it at their shop?
Who owns that Park Ave. In the back? I thought your forth vehicle was an Intrepid. Or have I lost track of your fleet?
That Park Ave is mine. My trusty Intrepid got totaled on November 18, 2009, when someone pulled a hit-and-run on it in a restaurant parking lot while it was unattended. The damage actually wasn't that bad, but at 10 model years old and 150,000 miles, it was enough to total it. I had entertained the idea of trying to fix it up and keep driving, but salvage laws in Maryland are a pain. So, I took the $2000 the insurance company offered, and used it towards the Park Ave.
Here's a pic of the Intrepid: I think the killer for the Trep was that the hit-and-run snagged the wiring harness and pulled it loose. That made a few idiot lights on the dash light up.
Here's a pic of the Park Ave on the day I bought it...December 12, 2009 (sometimes I wish I could lose my penchant for remembering dates like that...)
At the time it had 56,372 miles on it. Currently around 86,000. It's been okay, but I do miss the Intrepid sometimes.
This ad reminds of selling a house one time that had no furniture in it. I made "beds" in the bedrooms with cardboard and old sheets so walk-throughs could visualize the rooms.
not enough rust on them to be true upstate NY iron.
First time I went to Amsterdam (the NY one) I was blown away by how many cars with massive rust there were running around (up the roof, rotted out tailgates, etc.).
Ha, that's pretty creative photography. Sadly for the seller, it looks like scrap - Model A Tudor is the most common body and they are still very easy to find. Maybe for half the price as interesting yard art.
My neighbor across the street has a 2000 vette convertible. May go over sometime and test sit it. He just quit drinking so I'll give a month or so to drop by.
Don't look to close. That van is an '88 has a pretty bad case of upstate NY cancer and the mechanic who owned the Caddy had to put a new sub-frame in it. Fortunately for the Deville GM started using plastic panels on that model so the rust is not too bad for a 20 year old.
The Eclipse and the Vette stay home in the winter and my wife is scared to drive the Cruiser in the snow.
That's why I want to move to Florida.

In the latest issue of Automobile, Ezra Dryer had a piece on buying a CImmaron (somewhere in the midwest I think) and driving it 600 miles to a Mecum auction in Fla to resell it. Interesting drive. Lot of progress since those days, but other than running hot in traffic, the old Caddy did surprisingly well on the trip.
Figure in the price of a new fuel pump, starter, hoses, belts, total fluid change, plugs and wires, tires, brakes etc -- might be an ok driver but a collector car it ain't.
short version: stopped at Hyundai. Drove a base engine AWD. Plenty of pep it seems. Saw a dark blue one fresh off truck. Wife seemed to like, but needs to see in the daylight. Plan to go drive an RDX 1 more time tomorrow. Then hopefully make a final decision so I can move this into phase II, spending as little of my money as possible...
1988 GMC Vandura 4.3L V6. Purchased 3 years ago for $900. It was a hooptie when it was new and age hasn't improved it. The previous owner had it parked on grass and underneath is pretty rotten. Once I went over a bump and the coil springs punched through the lower control arms and started dragging on the road. You name it, I've replaced it underneath.
Still, the tomatoes I take to market don't mind the condition and it is a standard shift. Actually fun to drive
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Gah! I've owned one once -- '80 shorty w/ 250 L6, 3/tree -- and been pining for another ever since. I've seen fewer than a dozen of these overall; they're extremely rare.
The ultimate find would be a Dodge B150, 1993, old body style with the 3.9 V6 and a 5MT on the floor. I've never even seen an ad for one, but I know they were offered.
That's a really nice family shot you have there! I should get my fleet together sometime for a group shot. About the closest I have is this:
Here's a pic I took back in January 2008: Back then, I still had the Intrepid, hadn't sold the Dart yet, and the Catalina hadn't gotten its Rally wheels yet.
dunno why that second pic came in so big. At least it's not messing up the margins like they used to back in the day! Anyway, if you right-click on it and select "view image", the whole thing comes up.
Oh, almost forgot...in that pic, there's also a '52 Benz trying to hide from the county. Yet in an odd twist, it would be that blue '79 New Yorker that would ultimately land me with a housing violation. One day it was backed into the driveway rather than pulled in, and I got a housing violation for "untagged vehicles"
Base engined Santa Fe felt peppy? Turbo must be nice, then.
Read a review the other day that talked about how they shaved several hundred pounds off the previous model (and the LWB one will be similarly lighter than the Veracruz).
Nice to see curb weights going in the right direction.
Yeah, I drove a CX5 with my sister and felt it was slow. More noise than acceleration. That engine is fine for a lighter Mazda3, but CUVs carry more stuff.
The Mazda6 will have a 2.5l SkyActiv with 189hp in other markets, could be closer to 200hp tuned for the USA. The CX5 needs that, call it the CX5 GT or whatever.
Wife and I were talking about looking for something fun for her to drive that would be handed to our daughter when she starts to drive (she'll start driving on permit in 6 months). I certainly wouldn't mind something that would keep the miles lower on the wife's X3 (purchased in February and has 11k miles already).
Certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but my wife loves it. It was actually quite fun to drive - shifted nicely and was quite peppy with that turbo engine. The only drawbacks on the test drive was a pretty harsh ride over potholes (anyone else have a problem hitting those dead on when the intention is actually to avoid them? ) and the retracting spoiler - we heard this funny noise at one point and the salesperson had to point out that it was the sound of the rooftop spoiler retracting. If it could just be disabled I'd do that and take the risk of the car not having enough downforce at higher speeds .
Low miles for a car of its age, but obviously my main concern is what issues and costs we'd encounter with a 10-year old VW.
Basically, my wife would like a car with a bit of character (like a hatchback) with a manual trannie, for something like $10k or less. Suggestions are welcome.
By the way, that dealership that had the '02 Beetle (er, sorry, I mean New Beetle since that's the "old" one) also had my recently departed GTI. The Audi dealership that I traded in at apparently sold it pretty quickly to this VW dealership. A little tug at the heart for my old ride - sitting there in the outdoors all dirty .
Makes me feel pretty good on the trade though - I got $23k for it, and it's being offered at $25,999 CPO now.
