Sounds like you already want it so a better question is " Do you think I shouldn't ?" I know very little about advising you but if nyccarguy isn't against it -- that should help.

If NYC felt good about it, I would buy it on that.

Besides, if for some reason you decided you didn't want it, should not be hard to resell and at least break even.

I was out with my wife before and told her the whole story. She thinks the lot of us are nuts.

We braved the snow to hit the auto show - it was worth it since it wasn't too crowded.

Nothing too terribly exciting. The Acura RLX was available to crawl around - nothing too special compared to its competition. I kinda like the Fiat 500L. I have to admit I like the look of the Mini Paceman - not sure what the point is, but it's cool looking.

3-series wagon was there. Really nice design - a bit smoother to my eye than the E90. Even my wife admitted she liked it - but was more than content that her wagon is a stick (unavailable on the new one for now) and some $20k less than a new one.

Sat in a Buick Regal GS - probably wouldn't find myself at a Buick dealership, but that's the beauty of the car shows. That's a really nice looking car, inside and out.

I'm driving my Land Rover from CA to TN (excellent freeway vehicle). While driving through AZ, two truck loads of Mitsubishi Lancers where stacked high. I can see why they are not importing soon. B O R I N G!

Congrats I guess. Drove a '12 rental yesterday that had a tick over 24k on the clock but those have been hard miles as it drove very sluggishly and not like the other Altima's I've driven. Maybe needs a tune up or something but the body was pretty clean. One thing...i would never, ever buy an ex-rental from what I've seen. Folks trash the interior for some strange reason and leave stains EVERYWHERE! Unbelievable some of the places I've seen stains and the food crumbs all over the place. luckily the rental places have a great system for cleaning, gassing & washing the vehicles that we bring in. We always drop them at the cleaning area and those folk do a great and efficient job of getting these vehicles back into the rental line for newly arrived customers. And this goes on 24/7 but it must be back breaking work as one must jump in and out and go all over these vehicles. Am still waiting to hear about whether Hertz will hire me on for a part time gig but am not hopeful due to my age. They can discriminate that way without it ever looking like it is discrimination so they do get around these federal laws. I never mention my cane because that would be the "kiss of death" for a job. They see me as "handicapped" while I only use it for balance and for when my left leg gives out...I have to have it no matter what my wife or some others think. Even my doctor said to tell them to "screw off' next time they mention this as it's is only my business as to why I do use it. But still, discrimination is very hard to prove.

Hopefully, one day Hertz will call and just give me a shot here...they will get an exceptional employee who really wants to work!

Really. We've already got the cell phone deduction and the meals for when I have to leave the tri-county area. No mileage since we do not use our own vehicles and driving to work is not a deduction. I'm keeping good records and even have a spread sheet of all my times, dates etc. so I'll be ready for the 2013 tax year. They gave me the two shirts and I found some other same kind of red tee shirts at the local thrift for $.50 and they are in brand new condition. And for days like Friday when he called and I went straight there, I just wear what I have on unless I have a clean red tee in the car, which I normally do just for this kind of situation. Don't think I can deduct any of the cost of my new sneakers but will ask her. If they were "dedicated driving shoes", well maybe but still doubtful as we're not professionals like the race car guys. But worth asking about as they can only say "yes" or "no".

Am still waiting to try the Toyota mini vans that Hertz sometimes have as they look very nice. The Sedona is a bit quick and one needs to watch the right foot to keep it under 80.

Yep, same basic job but one with a definite schedule which I'd like...and they also pay $8.50/hr. and not but the job. When we do lot to lot, we get a set hourly wage depending on which company it is...one pays $7.90 and the other pays $8.50 and the runs to specific destinations have a set price like $103.00 or $65.00. I'd rather have an hourly wage and a definite work schedule so I can plan my life. I don't mind being flexible right now but over the long haul, I'd like set hours and days as I hope to be doing this until I reach 63 or 64 or hopefully another six to eight years G-d willing. I also want to be able to take off some time when I need to. At some point my middle child will graduate and go work for some pharmacy. Where ever that is is where we will move to and sell the "Sandman castle"...her work life will dictate where we do end up. Luckily the wife can move very easily with her job and I will do what needs doing even if I end up staying down here for a bit. Let her graduate first and then we'll decide on our next move. Still have over 3 years to do anything.

interesting about moving to be near the kids. I am trying to use that as a way to convince the wife that going south is a good idea. I even found her a great house in South Carolina (with a 3 car garage of course...).

Just too many moving parts. 1st have to convince my son to look at jobs down that way (and he has to get one), then get my daughter to pick a NC or SC college.

I figure if I can get them both in the area for at least 4 years, she might go for it!

Not to hard to understand...the kids are our life and their happiness is our happiness. So we want o be near them, at least the girls, as my son is an up north kind a guy and hates Florida. He's happy on his own with yearly visits but the girls are much closer with us and we plan to follow them like my grandparents did. Also, we LIKE our kids, something I'm not sure many parents would say. Parents all love their kids but liking them is something totally different. We all like to spend time together and their friends seem to enjoy our company to and we like them also. It just works for us.

Am trying to convince the wife to leave her Mazda at my daughters place for a time and use the '08 Accent which just sits. Need her to definitely commit as to this being her next ride and what better way to decide than to use one for an extended period of time. I know the new '13 model drives differently the our '08...it's more comfortable and moves quicker, just drives like a different vehicle. The size is what she needs to decide on and if she can live with it for the next 8 to 10 years. We'd get the GLS with cruise and the nicer alloys as the regular rental fleet one is just too plain Jane for my tastes and the extra price factored over the years of ownership is so worth getting the preferred package, a real no brainer. I also prefer the alloys as it looks like a more upscale vehicle. So that's my game plan and we'll see if she'll agree to this. I know what'll happen once her a/c does crap out...it'll somehow be my fault and I'll have to deal with it. I'd personally just swap vehicles or better yet, sell the Mazda and eventually get another vehicle as the kid doesn't even drive her car anymore. But we agree she needs something there just in case she has to get to the store or a study session with classmates. Leave her the old car for those times until the wife is ready to purchase her new ride. Putting any more $ into the Mazda is pointless as far as I'm concerned and I'd bet we could sell it ourselves to some kid who wants a cheap, powerful import that still looks decent. I'd bet we could get maybe $4k or so. That would be my suggestion here and wait till the '14 models come out.

Highly doubtful on the tax deduction. :shades:

Your comments about the rental touched a nerve - my wife is sensitive to some stuff. Mostly a few food allergies, but a place that outgasses lots of fumes, like an IKEA or a fabric store, will bother her. We don't spend much time in rentals and you can usually roll the windows down at least, but it's another reason to pass on buying one. No telling what they are soaking the seats and carpets with.

That's the same argument I try to use when she suggests buying a new ride lol. Used cars have had plenty of time to outgas.

Almost quit yesterday afternoon, I was so pissed off! The boss started yelling at me for not being in the right spot...he never told me where to go, he didn't communicate what he wanted, then proceeded to yell at me as it's my fault...WTF? This is a part time job and I don't appreciate being yelled at like that. He later mumbled I'm sorry but don't do it in the first place, talk to me like I'm an adult and tell me what you want...I will do it and again told him that. Just pissed the cr-p out of me, really. Didn't say a word the rest of the day and folks knew something was up? So glad I was off today as I would've refused and was half tempted to say no for tomorrow but when he texted I was talking with the wife about taxes and just thought what the heck. But my attitude is now changed and it'll only be "hello and goodbye" with them. Even the wife said to not share anything personal anymore as these folks are just co-workers and not friends, I do have a tendency to open up with people which isn't a good thing. Need to just keep the headphones on and close the mouth which will happen from here on out. "I'm there for the $" is my new mantra and I just need to keep repeating that to myself. The $ is the only reason to show up!

A shame because work should be fun and co-workers should have a good time. But these folks just aren't my cup of tea and I do like to laugh and joke at work...the p o was that way and we had a great time. But different mindset for a different work place. So glad we get to drive the cars by ourselves. But I am viewing this work now differently and will be silent and talk when talked to...I just can't talk to talk and if I don't have anything intelligent to say, I keep quiet. Never like to call attention to myself...and never have been that way!

In my quest for my 01 Forester replacement, I finally got a weekend where I wasn't preparing for a business trip or fixing something in the house. I manged to spend a few hours test driving cars today.

First up was the 2014 Forester. I drove two of them. The first was a Premium regular (non-turbo) model. My first impression was 'Wow, this car has grown up.' It's much bigger than my 01, and particularly taller. The acceleration was more than adequate, and downright peppy compared to the hybrids I've been testing. The CVT was fine around town, but got a bit loud when passing cars on the freeway. The seats were fine but not great. The interior at this level matched the price of the car (mid 20's), and the little LCD was neat. Somehow Subaru managed to take a car with outstanding visibility and make it even better. The backup camera really isn't needed with this fishbowl of car.

Next I tried a fully loaded ($36K) XT touring with nav, eyesight, etc). The car was literally just off the truck, and still had the plastic on the seats etc. Disturbingly, the HK radio/nav unit wouldn't turn on, and the check-engine was flashing, and the proximity entry wasn't working, But I was assured this was due to the fact that the 'PDI had not been done yet.' Hrm ... still a little off putting for a $36K car. The car, not surprisingly, was quicker off the line, but frankly that platform .. being as tall as it is, really doesn't need this kind of power. One nice effect was the freeway speeds used a lower RPM and it felt more relaxed on the freeway. It felt to me that the steering was more boosted than in the NA version, but that could be due to the SI setting?

The dealer was top notch, no pressure, and I left after getting the salesman card.

Next I decided to try some TDI VW's. I sat in a loaded Golf 4dr with TDI and DSG. The seats were a very nice cloth, but I didn't even bother to test drive that car ... the bolsters were just too aggressive for my body (5' 11" 180#). The salesman told me that they are from the GTI. Nice and supportive, and the cloth was top notch, but it hugged my .. um ... love handles too much.

I then tried a $30K Jetta TDI sportswagen with TDI. This one had the fake leather than VW seems to put in a lot of its cars. I really would prefer cloth than this material, as it seems sweaty to me. I decided to test drive it anyway and was pleasantly surprised at how it drives. The diesel is noisy at start compared to a gas engine, but it drives pretty darn nice. It's a little slow off the line, but that torque kicks in and the handing was nice. The visibility was nice too. The size/height really made this a nimble little economy car ... except at $30k it's hardly a good deal. I need to reset my internal clock on what cars cost these days, but wow, at $30K you're getting a car with a small nav screen, a lot of economy touches and fake leather ... in the old days we called this plastic. This one's not off my list, but it doesn't strike me as a great bargain, plus there's the question of VW reliability. Dealer applied a little bit of the 'what will it take to make a deal today' at the end but backed off when I said I wasn't buying today.

Next up I hit a Honda dealer and drove a CRV EX-L. Ok .. this car I liked. It's a little floaty, but frankly that traditional automatic feels right, and it has a lot of little details that make it good deal at $30 for a ex-l nav. I don't know the 'actual prices yet, but this car was pretty good. The only downsides were impaired visibility, but the backup camera makes up for it. This one is on the short list for sure if I go new. Again, another zero pressure dealer .... it seems that's the norm these days except at our local Ford/Mazda place.

Lastly I drove an Acura TSX wagon with tech. Even this was the most expensive car I drove all day, I feel it may be the best value. It felt like a 7/8 Lexus with better handling and fuel economy for 2/3 the price. It handles sharp, and the power was very nice. Not crazy, but much more than I need for a commuter. I was almost ready to pull the trigger and was checking out the cargo area, etc, but was stunned to discover they omit the spare tire (run flats). Nope, that's a big deal killer for me. Maybe I'm just unlucky but I've had 4 flats in the last 10 years and two of them would have stranded me with runflats. I have a good friend who got stranded in a Honda Minivan when her run flats did not run flat. She got disgusted and changed them over to regular + a spare. I really don't like this trend. I'd prefer a full sized spare, but I'm OK with a limited duty ... no spare? .... I don't think I can do that.

So I'm getting closer, but I still think the idea of a $30K used Lexus sedan + sinking a couple grand in to my 01 Subaru as a 2nd beater/bike hauler/home depot rig might be the best way to go. I like the luxury touches, and you can get CPO cars that originally sold for $50 for $30. We'll see I guess.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,357
run flats did not sound right, so I check at the Acura site. Looks Like we were both right. No spare tire, but also no run flats (worst of both worlds?). But you do get this:

    Tire sealant and inflater kit

One thing to do is check to see if the well is available. Might have to ditch the Styrofoam storage gizmo, but possible that you can still throw in a donut and jack.

your other plan is fine, but often sounds better than it is since sometimes you want the nice car and the cargo space at the same time!

I personally really like the TSX wagon. If you don't need AWD or gigantic cargo room, it is a great jack of all trades car.

Agree totally here...the TSX wagon is a real looker and a great value...just a bit to rich for my blood. I do like the Imprezza wagon I saw a few weeks back and could live with it as my d d.

I was interested to read your (all actually) comments on the CRV. I am especially curious to know if they got rid of the chassis shudder that a brand new one I drove in 08 had. The last vehicle I drove that had this shudder was my brother's 2011 2WD ext cab Toyota Tacoma. It was less pronounced with the truck than that CRV was, but it would drive me crazy. I am sure the reasons for it are the mfgrs being a little too ambitious with chassis lightening, crash worthiness and fuel economy quests in lieu of full frames. Did the 2013 CRV have it? The 08 I drove left me wondering if it was missing at least half the spot-welds in the unibody. It was a definitive deal-breaker for me. My 05 feels like a BMW in comparison.

Last year I drove an Outback. Felt great..actually heavier than it was, but re-affirmed my dislike for CVTs. That car would be so much better with a proper 6 speed, IMO.
  • nyccarguynyccarguy Member Posts: 17,502
So you actually listened to me? I thought I was babbling too much ;) You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Cosmetically the car is in average condition for a 7 car that has spent its entire life parked on the street. The previous owner was a pretty good parallel parker because there is minimal curb rash on the wheels.

As Walt put it, "the car just wasn't loved" like my Prelude or his 330Ci. It does have "good bones." The owner of the place is currently using it as his daily driver, so that's a plus. The engine pulls strong and had no problems up at the top of the rev range. It is an "old school" turbo with a bit of lag, but this flat four is certainly very fast. It would easily blow the doors off of either of our BMWs. The car tracked straight, didn't dive under moderately hard braking, didn't shimmy or shake. The steering felt nice and tight. The Toyos were properly balanced and the car was aligned properly. The body while not in great shape doesn't show any evidence of any paint work. Panels are straight and panel gaps are tight and even.

I was thinking more and more about the color and the condition of the body. It is THE PERFECT SLEEPER car. With no sunroof, a stick, and a turbo, it is almost like a COPO car produced by GM back in the '60s. Your son could always swap out the seats from a crashed WRX.

I looked online for some WRXs priced under $10K. They all have a boatload of miles and are older.

It is pretty much the ultimate car for the college aged car enthusiast. Fast and handles well. Stick Shift. Don't have to worry about getting your doors dinged by the rich kids with their Escalades.

Who you calling pilly? OCD, perhaps ;)

In the condition it is in (physically), no dealer would have this on their lot to nitpick. It is pretty much a wholesale or auction car.

Although, for some of the asking prices on CPO cars today, they'd better be damn near perfect. I've seen CPO BMWs on the lot with curb rashed wheels and some that have been smoked in (cleaned very well, but I noticed)

I had our '07 Honda CR-V for 6 yrs. and 68,000 miles of driving and traded for a 2013 in mid December. I just don't recall any shuddering. The thing that drove me nuts in the '07 is that the brake calipers would vibrate when riding over those little reflector things in the road. They replaced the calipers under warranty but they were just like the others. I'm thinking maybe new brake pads would have helped (tightening the space) but they were never needed.

The new 2013 is very smooth and no caliper noise.

The car felt pretty solid to me ... I didn't notice chassis shake, but then again I wasn't exactly looking for it. Overall it drove .. .well it's hard to describe, but kind of light on its feet ... it felt lighter than it actually is.

My 2013 Jetta GLI has a "Temporary-use spare tire" according to VW. When I had to install it, I discovered that it was a 205/55/16 H-rated tire on a steel wheel. Not sure why they felt the need to call it "temporary," or put a yellow sticker on it telling you not to go over 50. I appreciate that the handling of the car may be slightly different since the other tires are 225 width and on 18" wheels, but the overall effect would be much less dramatic than a donut spare. :confuse:
  • breldbreld Member Posts: 6,919
I'm a big fan of the TSX wagon as well. If the spare tire is the only real deal breaker, look for a used 2011 - those still had a spare tire. Other than that, I don't think there were any changes for 2012, so you wouldn't be missing out on anything, and saving a bit of change in the process.

For that matter, I believe there is a "kit" for a spare tire for the 2012, which would make sense since the 2011 had one.

Sandy, I hear ya on the part time gig. I do the pizza delivery thing 3 or 4 nights a week. I'd like to quit but the money is too good ... I brought home $65 for 4 hours work tonight.

I've also learned the hard way about sharing too much at work. Now keep my mouth shut by and large. Us drivers are cordial to one another - I suspect some of them are friends outside of work but those tend to be the younger ones.

I didn't get to the auto show today - instead bought a new couch for the family room. Will be delivered on Tuesday. First time in many years that I've not gone.

Oh, one other thing - the ION turned over 86k on my shift tonight. And, I've got to get the wife's Mazda in for service soon. Good thing the Mazda dealer is just a mile or so from her new office.
  • crkyolfrtcrkyolfrt Member Posts: 2,345
Could be cuz it is also a newer generation. The 08 was only 2nd year of the previous gen. I've asked others in the past but rarely think to. This is the first time anyone has responded back with any feedback.

I meant to say that this shudder was only going over bumps. On the particular test drive I went on, I wasn't able to feel chassis flex as a potential weakness in handling. This was just an incessant bu bu bump after every bump. i.e every bump had 2 to 2.5/3 smaller ricochet bumps after each one.

Mark, interesting to read about the brake caliper vibration..I've learned that brakes (in general) are far from Honda's strong suit..certainly on CRV's at least, of all generations since inception..

Good review. I'm curious, did the Forester XT handle or ride any differently then the standard Forester? The XT is supposed to have a sportier suspension set up.

You know ... I really couldn't feel much difference in handling between the XT and the NA version. The steering actually felt lighter and more boosted, but I may have had the SI drive setting on a strange mode. The power was different, but the handling really felt the same. They supposedly do have different suspensions, and I noticed that the XT had lower profile tires as well. If there was a difference it wasn't night and day, that's for sure.

On the TSX, Stickguy is right ... I just assumed that the salesguy was correct in saying it has runflats. I guess not. I have also found that for the low low price of $1000 I can buy a spare tire kit which includes the wheel, jack and fit kit. I have a line on cpo 2011 locally, and will check it out, but they are asking 28K with 15k on it. I think 26 is the max in my book

Ditto for the Fiat 500/Abarth- at least the Fiat spare tire/jack retrofit only costs $299 and takes @1 hour to install.

I am sure you could source all those items yourself for was less money. That is a crazy price for a donut and a jack. And the well is already there.

Shifty, I worked with a guy that had a car like yours (Mini S) and hated the run flats, so he put on normal tires, and just got a donut that he put in a plastic bag, and stored in the footwell behind the driver's seat. He was short and never had 2 passengers, so it was really just wasted space!

A local Acura dealer recently had a few CPO 2012 TSX wagons available, all with minimal miles (less than 5,000) - $29k for tech pkg, $26k without.

So a 2011 with more miles shouldn't be too hard to get within your budget.

Like you said - I think it's a great value for a sharp wagon, as long as you don't have to have AWD (or tons of power).

I may just wait until I can get one closer to $20k (or I have more funds :) ).

If I was looking for myself and had the money, 26K for a lightly used CPO would have to get serious consideration. that is Accord EX money. And I love wagons.

Just read that 4 good snow tires on a fwd car is actually better than AWD with all seasons. Of course, I bought an awd Lacrosse.

Well, you can still put snow tires on it. Should be even better than FWD with snow tires!

If you check out the forums at Acurazine, there are some people that have gotten some nice deals on leftover 12 TSX wagons recently. I'm in the bay area too, and haven't been very impressed on CPO prices on these vs new; the delta seems relatively small.

AWD with snows should be the best but tires, wheels and mounting cost too much. When the weather is bad, I'll just stay home.

a 2011 with more miles? 3-4 grand less? 24K maybe, tops?

    I'm terrible with pricing though.

on something with that low mileage, for the same model year, I might just pay darned near the same price, since you are extending the warranty for a couple of years (and may get cheaper financing?). 4K miles is not much to trade for an extended warranty.

Now, I would not pay new prices for a 2011 with 40K on it!

Dang crickets..he was pretty punctual with the emails before, wasn't he :(

Betcha he hasn't lined up another DD he likes as well.

Of course he knows that you have gone to more than just a bit of trouble here lining up a friend to check it out and such..he knows you're prepared to travel etc probably figures he's gonna give it a few more days or a week to get his price. He knows there ain't a lot of 'em out there so that might work against ya on the lower offer..
Can always come up tho, but might have to be full pop. I wonder if 250. less mighta done the trick? Or try for that now..let on that if it'll make the difference you have another agenda you have to tend to and time is running out so you'd just like to get 'er done..

all the jersey guys need to start trolling the guy. Start making offers in the 5-6K range. And laugh at his asking price.

eventually he will get the hint that he better grab the Kentucky money on the table!

or I get it for a nice low price. A win win!

haha, never thought of that...so nasty..makes one wonder just how low he got for..
I suppose if he Googled this car himself, it might pull up our chat here, so that might not work too well.. internet...can help ya, but can also bite ya with a bit of bad luck..

Does it have galvanized body panels does anyone know? If so, I wouldn't worry about the nicks...they're just character spots.. ;)

Could happen; one of our former editors blogged about how he was going to try to beat a speeding ticket years ago. The cop read the blog and made sure he showed up at court, and introduced the blog (and some incriminating statements in it) as evidence, and the ticket stood.

Anything you Blog can and will be used against you...

What time Sat evening? Jersey dealer hours are quite typically only till 6pm on Sat and then, of course, closed Sunday.

It was after he closed, but I got an email from him just 30 minutes before that... he seems to be connected all of the time.. Email app on his cellphone..

It wasn't that I expected a reply or answer on Saturday.. or, even Sunday... but, all day Monday?

I don't want to push it... it's a long way to go and a chance to take, on someone that doesn't exhibit a little enthusiasm for the deal (which he did, before my last email...)
