Besides, if for some reason you decided you didn't want it, should not be hard to resell and at least break even.
I was out with my wife before and told her the whole story. She thinks the lot of us are nuts.

Nothing too terribly exciting. The Acura RLX was available to crawl around - nothing too special compared to its competition. I kinda like the Fiat 500L. I have to admit I like the look of the Mini Paceman - not sure what the point is, but it's cool looking.
3-series wagon was there. Really nice design - a bit smoother to my eye than the E90. Even my wife admitted she liked it - but was more than content that her wagon is a stick (unavailable on the new one for now) and some $20k less than a new one.
Sat in a Buick Regal GS - probably wouldn't find myself at a Buick dealership, but that's the beauty of the car shows. That's a really nice looking car, inside and out.

Hopefully, one day Hertz will call and just give me a shot here...they will get an exceptional employee who really wants to work!

Am still waiting to try the Toyota mini vans that Hertz sometimes have as they look very nice. The Sedona is a bit quick and one needs to watch the right foot to keep it under 80.

Just too many moving parts. 1st have to convince my son to look at jobs down that way (and he has to get one), then get my daughter to pick a NC or SC college.
I figure if I can get them both in the area for at least 4 years, she might go for it!

Am trying to convince the wife to leave her Mazda at my daughters place for a time and use the '08 Accent which just sits. Need her to definitely commit as to this being her next ride and what better way to decide than to use one for an extended period of time. I know the new '13 model drives differently the our '08...it's more comfortable and moves quicker, just drives like a different vehicle. The size is what she needs to decide on and if she can live with it for the next 8 to 10 years. We'd get the GLS with cruise and the nicer alloys as the regular rental fleet one is just too plain Jane for my tastes and the extra price factored over the years of ownership is so worth getting the preferred package, a real no brainer. I also prefer the alloys as it looks like a more upscale vehicle. So that's my game plan and we'll see if she'll agree to this. I know what'll happen once her a/c does crap out...it'll somehow be my fault and I'll have to deal with it. I'd personally just swap vehicles or better yet, sell the Mazda and eventually get another vehicle as the kid doesn't even drive her car anymore. But we agree she needs something there just in case she has to get to the store or a study session with classmates. Leave her the old car for those times until the wife is ready to purchase her new ride. Putting any more $ into the Mazda is pointless as far as I'm concerned and I'd bet we could sell it ourselves to some kid who wants a cheap, powerful import that still looks decent. I'd bet we could get maybe $4k or so. That would be my suggestion here and wait till the '14 models come out.

Your comments about the rental touched a nerve - my wife is sensitive to some stuff. Mostly a few food allergies, but a place that outgasses lots of fumes, like an IKEA or a fabric store, will bother her. We don't spend much time in rentals and you can usually roll the windows down at least, but it's another reason to pass on buying one. No telling what they are soaking the seats and carpets with.
That's the same argument I try to use when she suggests buying a new ride lol. Used cars have had plenty of time to outgas.
A shame because work should be fun and co-workers should have a good time. But these folks just aren't my cup of tea and I do like to laugh and joke at work...the p o was that way and we had a great time. But different mindset for a different work place. So glad we get to drive the cars by ourselves. But I am viewing this work now differently and will be silent and talk when talked to...I just can't talk to talk and if I don't have anything intelligent to say, I keep quiet. Never like to call attention to myself...and never have been that way!

First up was the 2014 Forester. I drove two of them. The first was a Premium regular (non-turbo) model. My first impression was 'Wow, this car has grown up.' It's much bigger than my 01, and particularly taller. The acceleration was more than adequate, and downright peppy compared to the hybrids I've been testing. The CVT was fine around town, but got a bit loud when passing cars on the freeway. The seats were fine but not great. The interior at this level matched the price of the car (mid 20's), and the little LCD was neat. Somehow Subaru managed to take a car with outstanding visibility and make it even better. The backup camera really isn't needed with this fishbowl of car.
Next I tried a fully loaded ($36K) XT touring with nav, eyesight, etc). The car was literally just off the truck, and still had the plastic on the seats etc. Disturbingly, the HK radio/nav unit wouldn't turn on, and the check-engine was flashing, and the proximity entry wasn't working, But I was assured this was due to the fact that the 'PDI had not been done yet.' Hrm ... still a little off putting for a $36K car. The car, not surprisingly, was quicker off the line, but frankly that platform .. being as tall as it is, really doesn't need this kind of power. One nice effect was the freeway speeds used a lower RPM and it felt more relaxed on the freeway. It felt to me that the steering was more boosted than in the NA version, but that could be due to the SI setting?
The dealer was top notch, no pressure, and I left after getting the salesman card.
Next I decided to try some TDI VW's. I sat in a loaded Golf 4dr with TDI and DSG. The seats were a very nice cloth, but I didn't even bother to test drive that car ... the bolsters were just too aggressive for my body (5' 11" 180#). The salesman told me that they are from the GTI. Nice and supportive, and the cloth was top notch, but it hugged my .. um ... love handles too much.
I then tried a $30K Jetta TDI sportswagen with TDI. This one had the fake leather than VW seems to put in a lot of its cars. I really would prefer cloth than this material, as it seems sweaty to me. I decided to test drive it anyway and was pleasantly surprised at how it drives. The diesel is noisy at start compared to a gas engine, but it drives pretty darn nice. It's a little slow off the line, but that torque kicks in and the handing was nice. The visibility was nice too. The size/height really made this a nimble little economy car ... except at $30k it's hardly a good deal. I need to reset my internal clock on what cars cost these days, but wow, at $30K you're getting a car with a small nav screen, a lot of economy touches and fake leather ... in the old days we called this plastic. This one's not off my list, but it doesn't strike me as a great bargain, plus there's the question of VW reliability. Dealer applied a little bit of the 'what will it take to make a deal today' at the end but backed off when I said I wasn't buying today.
Next up I hit a Honda dealer and drove a CRV EX-L. Ok .. this car I liked. It's a little floaty, but frankly that traditional automatic feels right, and it has a lot of little details that make it good deal at $30 for a ex-l nav. I don't know the 'actual prices yet, but this car was pretty good. The only downsides were impaired visibility, but the backup camera makes up for it. This one is on the short list for sure if I go new. Again, another zero pressure dealer .... it seems that's the norm these days except at our local Ford/Mazda place.
Lastly I drove an Acura TSX wagon with tech. Even this was the most expensive car I drove all day, I feel it may be the best value. It felt like a 7/8 Lexus with better handling and fuel economy for 2/3 the price. It handles sharp, and the power was very nice. Not crazy, but much more than I need for a commuter. I was almost ready to pull the trigger and was checking out the cargo area, etc, but was stunned to discover they omit the spare tire (run flats). Nope, that's a big deal killer for me. Maybe I'm just unlucky but I've had 4 flats in the last 10 years and two of them would have stranded me with runflats. I have a good friend who got stranded in a Honda Minivan when her run flats did not run flat. She got disgusted and changed them over to regular + a spare. I really don't like this trend. I'd prefer a full sized spare, but I'm OK with a limited duty ... no spare? .... I don't think I can do that.
So I'm getting closer, but I still think the idea of a $30K used Lexus sedan + sinking a couple grand in to my 01 Subaru as a 2nd beater/bike hauler/home depot rig might be the best way to go. I like the luxury touches, and you can get CPO cars that originally sold for $50 for $30. We'll see I guess.
Tire sealant and inflater kit
One thing to do is check to see if the well is available. Might have to ditch the Styrofoam storage gizmo, but possible that you can still throw in a donut and jack.
your other plan is fine, but often sounds better than it is since sometimes you want the nice car and the cargo space at the same time!
I personally really like the TSX wagon. If you don't need AWD or gigantic cargo room, it is a great jack of all trades car.

Last year I drove an Outback. Felt great..actually heavier than it was, but re-affirmed my dislike for CVTs. That car would be so much better with a proper 6 speed, IMO.
Cosmetically the car is in average condition for a 7 car that has spent its entire life parked on the street. The previous owner was a pretty good parallel parker because there is minimal curb rash on the wheels.
As Walt put it, "the car just wasn't loved" like my Prelude or his 330Ci. It does have "good bones." The owner of the place is currently using it as his daily driver, so that's a plus. The engine pulls strong and had no problems up at the top of the rev range. It is an "old school" turbo with a bit of lag, but this flat four is certainly very fast. It would easily blow the doors off of either of our BMWs. The car tracked straight, didn't dive under moderately hard braking, didn't shimmy or shake. The steering felt nice and tight. The Toyos were properly balanced and the car was aligned properly. The body while not in great shape doesn't show any evidence of any paint work. Panels are straight and panel gaps are tight and even.
I was thinking more and more about the color and the condition of the body. It is THE PERFECT SLEEPER car. With no sunroof, a stick, and a turbo, it is almost like a COPO car produced by GM back in the '60s. Your son could always swap out the seats from a crashed WRX.
I looked online for some WRXs priced under $10K. They all have a boatload of miles and are older.
It is pretty much the ultimate car for the college aged car enthusiast. Fast and handles well. Stick Shift. Don't have to worry about getting your doors dinged by the rich kids with their Escalades.
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2025 Camry SE AWD
In the condition it is in (physically), no dealer would have this on their lot to nitpick. It is pretty much a wholesale or auction car.
Although, for some of the asking prices on CPO cars today, they'd better be damn near perfect. I've seen CPO BMWs on the lot with curb rashed wheels and some that have been smoked in (cleaned very well, but I noticed)

For that matter, I believe there is a "kit" for a spare tire for the 2012, which would make sense since the 2011 had one.

I've also learned the hard way about sharing too much at work. Now keep my mouth shut by and large. Us drivers are cordial to one another - I suspect some of them are friends outside of work but those tend to be the younger ones.
I didn't get to the auto show today - instead bought a new couch for the family room. Will be delivered on Tuesday. First time in many years that I've not gone.
Oh, one other thing - the ION turned over 86k on my shift tonight. And, I've got to get the wife's Mazda in for service soon. Good thing the Mazda dealer is just a mile or so from her new office.
I meant to say that this shudder was only going over bumps. On the particular test drive I went on, I wasn't able to feel chassis flex as a potential weakness in handling. This was just an incessant bu bu bump after every bump. i.e every bump had 2 to 2.5/3 smaller ricochet bumps after each one.
Mark, interesting to read about the brake caliper vibration..I've learned that brakes (in general) are far from Honda's strong suit..certainly on CRV's at least, of all generations since inception..

On the TSX, Stickguy is right ... I just assumed that the salesguy was correct in saying it has runflats. I guess not. I have also found that for the low low price of $1000 I can buy a spare tire kit which includes the wheel, jack and fit kit. I have a line on cpo 2011 locally, and will check it out, but they are asking 28K with 15k on it. I think 26 is the max in my book
Ditto for the Fiat 500/Abarth- at least the Fiat spare tire/jack retrofit only costs $299 and takes @1 hour to install.

Shifty, I worked with a guy that had a car like yours (Mini S) and hated the run flats, so he put on normal tires, and just got a donut that he put in a plastic bag, and stored in the footwell behind the driver's seat. He was short and never had 2 passengers, so it was really just wasted space!

So a 2011 with more miles shouldn't be too hard to get within your budget.
Like you said - I think it's a great value for a sharp wagon, as long as you don't have to have AWD (or tons of power).
I may just wait until I can get one closer to $20k (or I have more funds

Betcha he hasn't lined up another DD he likes as well.
Of course he knows that you have gone to more than just a bit of trouble here lining up a friend to check it out and such..he knows you're prepared to travel etc probably figures he's gonna give it a few more days or a week to get his price. He knows there ain't a lot of 'em out there so that might work against ya on the lower offer..
Can always come up tho, but might have to be full pop. I wonder if 250. less mighta done the trick? Or try for that now..let on that if it'll make the difference you have another agenda you have to tend to and time is running out so you'd just like to get 'er done..
eventually he will get the hint that he better grab the Kentucky money on the table!
or I get it for a nice low price. A win win!

Could happen; one of our former editors blogged about how he was going to try to beat a speeding ticket years ago. The cop read the blog and made sure he showed up at court, and introduced the blog (and some incriminating statements in it) as evidence, and the ticket stood.
