Also, just an FYI, the in-dash radio devices are still made by Visteon, even the new unit with factory XM. (The speakers on the high-end systems are made by Infinity.) My son-in-law works for Visteon in Michigan and he filled me in when he was home for the holidays.
In addition, is the XM receiver integrated into the main head unit or is the XM receiver a seperate box that connects to the Visteon head unit and mounts somewhere under the dash? I have an outboard FM modulated unit and would seriously consider replacing the Infinity head unit with the XM version if I felt confident that everything would work as designed.
Thanks, in advance, for your help in answering these questions. I hope you enjoy your new car. I have over 13K miles and am very happy with my decision.
The actual XM module is just that, a separate module that connects to the radio head unit via cable. Apparently you can locate the module in the trunk, use long cable up to the head unit via door sills, etc. By putting the module in the trunk it will facilitate locating the XM radio antenna on the rear deck lid; the antenna cable then can enter the trunk, go down the hinge bracket assembly and plug into the module. If you get the actual factory install then the XM antenna is located at the rear of the roof line, above the rear window area.
Will keep you posted... Mike
Thanks!
By the way, I'm glad I bought the car.
Looking forward to your feedback...can you please see if he can get us forum members a deal on the swap because going through our dealers will be cost prohibitive

Listening to the service manager, it's very unclear whether they do or don't hear the whining/wheezing noise.... But they say they checked all the parts that COULD make the noise, like the Alternator, Power Steering Pump, Pulleys, Water Pump, but "could not isolate any noise that appeared to be abnormal"...
Doing a search on this issue on this and other sites, there are SEVERAL other Hyundai model owners complaining of the same thing, including V6 owners, none came up with a solution... From Googling on the issue I am also under the impression that some other cars have this noise, cars made by Ford and GM...
One thing mentioned by the Hyundai rep was, according to the SM, is the Timing Belt, as what may be the source of the noise -- while they don't actually fully acknowledge that they can hear it, he he...
So the bottom line is -- no solution.
One thing is clear, IF SOMETHING IS WRONG -- IT WILL EVENTUALLY GET WORSE AND WORSE, AND BREAK DOWN. The noise is something that I've already got used to. So I'll be going on with my life, enjoying this car, and time will tell...
And yes, I might approach another local dealer with the challenge.... Sometimes they like those challenges when the competition fails....
Two weeks pass and only then you notice a pull to the left? That doesn't really convince me that the car was out of alignment when purchased .... I would suggest you look for another opinion. I've learned (the hard way) that not too many shops can do a truely reliable alignment job. A reputable BODY SHOP with a sophisticated equipment would be more credible to me!
And btw, many (if not all?) '06 Sonata have this "weird" slight misalignment of the steering wheel to the left. I have it and I noticed it in 2 other loaners. I'm not sure this is of any help to you, though.
Keep us posted, hyowner.
Anyway, your Hyundai mechanic is full of it. You do not need a frame adjustment...... you need a different mechanic, Big Time.
Go to another dealer and get some one who will look up the proper alignment info for you and do the job right.
The correct document is called "Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin No.06-50-004 Subject, Alignment Specifications, dated March 2006"
You can find all of this information for yourself by going to the web site www.HMAService.com
You need to register but it is free. It is the official Hyundai service site. It is the same one that the dealership will plug into with their computer. You need to use Internet Explorer to use this site and have any of the appropriate plug-ins that they require. But all of this can be found at their web site. It is an invaluable resource for Hyundai automobile owners.
Good luck!
So, again, I would check around and take the car to an expert. You have the specs, show them to the guy and see what he says.
Ask around. Most mechanics don't do alignments, so they send the car (or the client) to the local reputable place who does the job. And as Craig mentioned, dealers usually don't do alignments... The equipemnt is expensive and takes a lot of space, and it's not economically justified.
So, again, check around. And again, a large, reputable Body Shop probably has the equipment and the knowledge.
By the way, this is the first time I've looked at the black interior. I think I like it but maybe Black on Black would be too much for this vehicle. The one pictured is silver exterior and looks like a good combination.
shows several $40 and up.
1) The driver’s cloth power seat has a big opening in the cloth on the left side that I can put my whole hand in and pull out the wires that go to the power seat. I am told by the salesperson at the dealership that this is the design of the Sonata even though we could not find any other Hyundai cloth power seat that had this opening. Is it normal for the Sonata cloth power seats to have a six inch separation in it’s cloth that you can tear out the foam and wires?
2) The car had a gallon of gas in the tank when I drove it off the sales lot. I drove two blocks away and put 14 gallons of gas in the tank (the most the gas tank would take). I was pulling away from the gas station and this awful noise was coming from the back of the new Sonata. I would lightly step on the brakes and you could heard loud crushing noises and then sloshing noises. I drove the car for another 25 miles and it was clear the crushing noises were the back brakes and sloshing noise was the full tank of gas moving back and forth/ back and forth/ back and forth. I could also hear all the plastic pieces of the dashboard and doors shifting back and forth in the front interior cabin while driving. The salesperson told me again that all these noises were normal, but I don’t remember hearing these noises while test driving three other Sonatas (of course the other test cars didn’t have a full tank of gas). Is it normal for this car to be SO noisy? When the gas level got down below half full most of the noises were what I was use to in my old car, but after filling up the gas tank again the loud noise level came back.
3) How many gallons are still in the gas tank when the gas gauge needle is on “E”? The car has been on “E” twice, but 14 gallons of gas has been the most the car will take at this level.
4) The second day driving the car it became apparent the front end alignment was not right. The car drifts to the left 70 percent of the time and about 20 percent of time will change and start pulling to the right for no clear reason. Only 10 percent of the time I am driving straight ahead without needing to correct the steering wheel. I am consistently correcting the steering wheel so the car doesn’t drift from side to side. I never had to do this with my other cars, so is this something unique with the Sonata that I have to get use to?
5) On the third day I had to use the rear defroster for the first time and discovered that the top 6 defroster lines didn’t work. The service man at the dealership asked me if I had cut the lines because the defroster lines were commonly damaged by owners trying to wash their car’s back inside window. I was never near the car’s back inside window so I didn’t damage the defroster lines, BUT is it possible to damage this car’s defroster lines by washing the window? For future reference, how do you wash the inside back window?
6) Would someone know how to turn the headlights on WITHOUT turning the ignition key (or needing to run the engine)? I never check this while test driving the Hyundai, but discovered it a few days later that I could not turn my headlights on unless the ignition key was turned to “On”. All my prior car’s head lights could be turned on without involving the ignition. I talked to 25 other people who own non Hyundai cars and all these people said their car’s headlights can be turned on without the ignition key. Maybe I am missing something because it doesn’t make sense why a car manufacturer would design a car that made the engine idle when the owner wanted to use the illumination of the headlights.
7) The engine is very noisy and rough running for a car that only has now 250 miles, is this also normal?
2- The sloshing sound is a common nuisance complaint among owners usually between full tank and 3/4. Crushing sound!?!? Haven't heard. Possibly shocks??
3- remain amount of gas... total tank capacity minus amount you just filled, check the manual (I think it was 17 gals)
4- This is a new complaint that recently cropped up. I can't tell if my car does it or not. I think sometimes it does, but only because I'm looking for it, or the crown in the road. Check these forums, I think you're the second person to complain about it. I just read about it within the month.
5- The top few lines are not part of the defroster system. They are part of the radio antenna. I think it was the top 3 lines. Check you manual, or you can examine the lines carefully, tracing their route. It should differ from that of the defroster grid.
6- hmmmmm, not sure, but have you turned the knob off automatic light sensor? I suspect you can't turn on the lights with the ignition off to prevent accidental battery drainage by leaving them on for an extended period of time. Which is a good feature in my opinion considering how many people forget to turn off their lights. (Not to mention how many people forget to TURN ON their lights)
7- Rough running it should not be, should be extremely smooth, especially the V6. As for the noise, a few owners complain about the TIMING CHAIN making noise, which is normal (I think)
FYI, My Sonata is a '06 GLS I4, 3900 Miles for just about 10 mnths.
With this design, you can leave your headlight switch in the on position, and the headlights will automatically turn on and off when you start the car. The benefit of this design is that you can't leave your headlights when you turn off the ignition switch and leave your car, i.e. no dead car battery in a parking lot!
Of course, both of the above features are independent of the auto on, auto off feature.
To the best of my knowledge, only two cars wire the headlight circuit through the ignition switch - SAAB and Hyundai. Personally, I prefer this design to the one that everyone else uses.
2. The sloshing sound is just part of the way Sonata has been designed. There are other cars with the same design, I know, but I don't know which. So, the bottom line -- don't worry about it.
3. Yes, the answer is simple about how much gas you have when the needle is on the E mark. And don't wait for your tank to be near empty, especially in the cold winter.
4. If you had a front-end alignment problem, your car would drift to the SAME direction ALL the time. I suspect you meant your car drifts to the RIGHT most of the time, 'cause the road usually is lower on its RIGHT side... Part of the Sonata's soft steering wheel design, it does tend to drift a bit according to the angle of the road.
5. Same as pekelopd mentioned.
6. The Sonata's headlights are both Automatic to turn on when the ambient light is low (when turned to "auto") and have the Auto Shut-Off feature, which turns them OFF (no matter if they are set to ON or AUTO) when the car is turned off and the doors open. This is a GREAT feature, which more and more modern cars adopt.
7. Noisy engine? If you hear "grinding noise" when you start a COLD ENGINE, a noise which goes away in a few seconds -- it's the TIMING CHAIN, or rather the Timing chain hydraulic tensioner. There is a known issue with those and they need to be replaced sometimes.
I've always wondered what sound the engine made when the tensioner needed replaced. So "grinding" it is. I've wondered about my I4 ticking on cold start-up. Thought maybe it was the tensioner. Guess not.
I found you can turn the parking lights on without the key in the ignition. I also noticed yesterday that when I lock out the other windows it also locks those windows out on my master switch. Odd, but I guess that's how they wanted to build them.
Add Subaru to the list.
And you can add to the list of cars with Auto Shut off a few more modern cars... Our '05 Accord we drive with the lights ON all the time (only the '06 Accord was designed with true DRL), and when the engine is shut off and we open the door, after about 10 seconds the headlights would shut off too.
Yes, there are still a number of FANCY cars that we all here in the USA are waiting for their designers to bring them to the 21st century, like adding DRL or Automatic lights... Nissan and its fancy Infinity line, Mercedes, BMW, LandRover, Jaguar, Audi... Ford and Crysler are in line too...
Thanks to mamamia2 for making the very useful suggestion of combining these discussions.
See you in two pages.

I think that ticking in the I4 is common. I have it too. Speaking of I4's, have you done a test run yet of yours for it's topspeed??
Top Speed? I'm too old for that... But I drove it 90mph and felt very comfortable and stable... As a matter of fact, I wasn't even NOTICING I got to that speed, till my wife leaned over to check the dashboard...
I think pekelopd is talking to me about the top speed test. Haven't done it yet but I will I promise....weather related delays. Snow, wind, heavy winds, ice, cold. April will be here soon and I have a test track ready for the test. I plan on running up to but not exceed 6250 RPM and will post the results here. I can't wait to give it a go. I'm going to ask a police officer friend, they're all my friends now, to bring his car with radar attached to record the speed. Who knows? 48 going on 24, it's gonna cost me.
About the four ticking I'm glad I'm not alone. I did drive a couple other fours on our lot and found the same so I just live with it. It's barely audile in warmer temps. Somedays I think about asking our buyer to find me a powder white pearl GLS V6 with a sunroof, 16" rims and about 17K miles to swap out my I4. Then I wake up and remember I wanted a four cylinder. Oh well.
Have a good weekend guys!
Craig
And, btw, what's this police "my friends now"? Have you done anything unusual you wanna tell us about?
Talk about pressure.
Mamamia,
Small town of 50,000 people, I've been here 12 years and know a lot of people. As a matter of fact I've tapped a few beer kegs with the local blue. Good people. It's well known thay have the best drugs. :P
I helped a couple of guys get on the force so I feel like they owe me. Not sure if I want to pull a favor for this. I should save it for when I REALLY need it wouldn't you think? :shades:
I probably won't trade. I haven't even driven the V6 yet. If I do I may trade but not before I take care of you guys.
I'm also in the habit of calling the chief from time to time, reminding him that they should not forget what it says on their squad cars "To SERVE and protect".... They don't always remember the SERVE part.
But maybe I'll start buying them doughnuts too?
