Here's a nice but modest starter car for someone new to the hobby:

    https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2017/05/10/hemmings-find-of-the-day-1964-plymouth-belvedere-four-door-sedan/?refer=news

Bonus points for being cheap and could easily be a daily driver.

That is a nice looking example. Great for cruise night - all original.

Oh, the old Slant Six isn't too bad at all 0-50 and can maintain freeway speeds....I wouldn't go passing big rigs though...

It did handily outperform contemporary Ford and Chevy 6s however, for whatever that's worth.

I had a '65 Plymouth Valiant with Slant Six and 4-speed, and it was pretty peppy--kinda ran out of steam in the upper revs though.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,440
My duster slant 6 3 speed move OK. At least compared to the family volvo 144. Not sure what impact an AT and heavier car will do to the pep factor.

Probably should not admit this, but I still would not mind a Mach 1 mustang II, with a stick. Almost bought one in my school days but it was a bit too pricey. Though I would also like a gremlin X. Yeah, I have strange taste.

More like what I had or wanted back in my youth.

The mustang would be a canvas for subtle upgrades. Crate 302 motor, better suspension, good seats. Make a little sleeper out of it.

Like this one. A solid car, not rusty. Just needs a stick, but I guess if swapping motor, can change it over. But simpler if it just came that way.

I know I've shared this story before. When I lived in CA, I knew someone with a Mustang II. Two of them, in fact. Both white, one with red stripes, the other with blue stripes. Both had the V8. However, the one with the red stripes had been, umm, 'enhanced' and didn't have much in the way of emissions controls. The one with the blue stripes is the one that went for emissions testing every year - and passed with flying colors.

The registration and plates were affixed to the car with the red stripes the other 364 days.

DMV only knew them as "white" in color.

That Plymouth is kind of a neat throwback to what used to be a mainstream car choice. 6-cyl., automatic, not much on the way of options and not even a radio. The colors are nice though I am curious about that strange-looking stain in the center of the rear seat cushion. Too bad about the hood given the nice condition of the rest of the car.

As much as I like Mopars and the slant 6, my eventual hobby car will need a bit more 'oomph' to it. That one reminds me of my high school friend's '58 Chevy 4-door with the 6. A slow tank.

    @qbrozen,
Somewhat rare and appeals to me is what matters.
Kind of concerning is that there are only 9 vehicles listed for sale including a Super Duty.
I'm assuming that is the tow vehicle.

9 vehicles at that dealer? I'm seeing way more than that on the website.

And now that you made me look, I see he still has the Swinger and is down to $10,990 on it. Ugh! I could have easily replaced the interior at that price and come out ahead.

I like the 64 Plymouth and especially the Dodge, but as coupes with the neat, thin slanted C pillars. The 4dr for me just looked bloated perhaps because of that thick C pillar it used (probably to make it look bigger).

An SS wagon is pretty neat, but I'm not sure about that color...
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,440
that wagon is certainly interesting. Probably pulls a whopping 6 MPG too!

that Dart is getting cheap. But man, that interior is nasty (the color mostly). Still prefer a stick of course!

Gotta love it - a "documented 4-4-2" with Cutlass badges on the outside and a Cutlass Supreme badge on the glovebox door. From a "Pro" seller no less.

I actually should hate what they did to it but aside from the catalog stuff under the hood it's sort of neat. But I can't forgive the misrepresentation.

that's pretty awful, IMHO. Really doesn't matter what it started life as at this point since nothing is left but the chassis and body.

The interior had a ton of work done to it, which is that part that fascinates me. Not just the seats and door panels, but they removed most of the switches from the dash. Also removed the heater controls, but they needed new ones anyway as the dash proclaims it to be a non-AC car originally and it has it now. The vents on this don't look like they would move much air but who knows. If the quality of the work isn't top-shelf this one would be a perpetual headache.

They didn't offer a 455 in 1968 on a 442 and there's not supposed to be an "Oldsmobile" emblem on the hood either
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,319

That's because it's a Cutlass, which does have such an emblem. Plus the Cutlass script on the fenders and trunklid. Plus the vertical Cutlass grille instead of the eggcrate 4-4-2 grille with a 4-4-2 emblem in the middle. The only 455 in a '68 Olds A-body was in the Hurst/Olds. At least they aren't claiming this to be one of those.

    But hey, it's "documented". ;)

Well it's going to get "documented" in a courtroom if he doesn't change that ad. Actually the VIN will tell you right away. If his "stock number" he has on the advert is part of the VIN (looks like part of an Olds VIN from that year), then it's definitely not a 442 underneath.

make that a double "sigh." He doesn't have any of those things. OK, maybe 6 acres is correct. But I was in and through every building in late March and there ain't no paint booth nor parts dept. 30 car show rooms? I guess you could fudge that. About 12 in one and 8 in the other with room to squeeze between them. Maybe if you eliminate the desks, decorations, bathrooms, and pack them in with no way around, you could get 30 between the two. 16 lifts? Well, yes, but every single one of them is occupied with a car not being worked on. 50 car service dept? That's just silly. He probably does have 50 cars crammed in there, but it is a storage facility, not a service dept. That is where those 16 cars are on lifts, BTW, and they have 16 cars under them and another 16 stuffed in the lane between the lifts. It would take a LONG time to get a car out to test drive if it wasn't right up front, let alone make any kind of room to "service" your car.

Too cheap to use Hemmings or some other classic car listing site?

Yes and No,TBI in '84, rail injection in '86 UNLESS you had a stickshift, then you got a carb in 84 & 85, IIRC. Going from memory, so might be off a little here....

The TBI wasn't very good and I wouldn't recommend it.
