Why must every 50's car have hanging dice from the interior review mirror? ugh

That hilariously priced Caddy has a continental kit and fuzzy dice. What would make it a trifecta? Curb feelers? Driver wearing a Hawaiian shirt?

Spotlights drilled into the A-pillars, which I despise. Surprised this doesn't have them.

I suspect the upholstery fabric used on this one is not the style it came with originally.

Spotlights on both sides even. Maybe a windshield visor too (but sometimes I don't mind those). I'd wager an awful lot you are right about the upholstery. I suspect the seller isn't just trying to break even, but net a big ROI. Good luck.

They restored a 4-door Caddy of that vintage on FantomWorks a while back, spent biiig $$ ($80k?), it was a family memento.

I don't see a radiator in that VWbaru?

Lots of interesting stuff this batch. I like that '79 Chevy pickup. The Toyota PU also.

The '67 Firebird convertible looks good but may be overpriced, not sure. The Dart GT is rare indeed and probably not a bad buy.

I preferred the metal front-bumper mid-70s Camaros to the Leno-jaw urethane ones that came later. That one might be an OK buy.

That's a lot of cash for a Karmann Ghia that "should" run.

I am not allergic to yellow cars like some people are, but I don't understand the desire to paint them in retina-searing neon shades of yellow. Especially in '60s cars, yellows from the factory were often pastel and soft shades, which I prefer.

I like that '51 Stude bullet nose and the price is not bad. The Sunbeam Alpines is another story. Nobody wanted these until the price of the Tiger version went nuts. Similar to the case of LeMans, Cutlass, Skylarks...etc. The basis for tribute cars or clones. In their time the motoring press described the Alpines more as cruisers than sport cars. The Tiger was described as having unusual driving dynamics due to the short wheelbase. But hey Carroll Shelby had his name on it so it must be great.

I believe they were kind of a cross between European and American, and yeah, that can have compromises. At different times they included Ford and Chrysler power plants.

The Sunbeam Alpine was a product of the Rootes Group of England. At some point in the mid 60's they contracted Carroll Shelby to do the Tiger which used the small block Ford Windsor. Starting with the 260 v8 engine and later the 289 engine. While the Tiger was still in production Mopar bought the Rootes Group. Mopar was not happy about one of their products being powered by a Ford engine so they killed the car. No Mopar engine was ever used in the Alpine or the Tiger.

The Chrysler engine may have been used on some Alpine cars (perhaps not sold here?) according to Rootes Chrysler website below

The Tiger ("Alpine V8"), essentially an Alpine with an American V8, was brought out in 1964, and was assembled by Jensen, which used Chrysler V8s in some of its cars.

I think that is a case of poor wording on that website. Jensen did indeed use Chrysler V-8s on their own cars like the Interceptor. I think that is what it intended to convey, rather than that they installed some in Alpines.

You may well be right. Chrysler's involvement in Europe back in those days might best be described as "its complicated" :p
  • OscarOscar Member Posts: 63
Jensen used Chrysler B and RB engines in the Interceptor. Jensen also did bodies for the big Healeys and Volvo P1800. The only other Rootes/Chrysler connection was that Chrysler sold Rootes cars here in the US including one model that looked like shrunken Barracuda that I think was also called the Alpine . These were what came to be known as captive imports. Around 1970 Chrysler had another line of captive imports and these were sourced from Mitsubishi.

For awhile back then Chrysler and Simca were affiliated. Where did their first small import, the Plymouth Cricket come from? I'm pretty sure it was sourced from the UK vice the Dodge Colt's Mitsu roots.

Nice wagon for its time. I think a few years later Ford referred to themselves as the "Wagonmasters".

Interesting. I knew a guy in college who drove an old Hillman. It was reliable as far as starting and running, but had a few electrical glitches (Lucas perhaps?). For example, honking the horn made the wipers take an interval.

The financial history of Chrysler in general is a bit of a trip. If you plotted their postwar financial performance it was a constant series of peaks and valleys. They almost headed into BK with the rushed to production 57's and subsequent 58 recession for example, had another near brush in the first half of the sixties. Iaccoca's bailout shouldn't have been surprising when you look back really.

Big multi-car crash up in Everett yesterday evening (caused by a drunk in a speeding pickup, IIRC) - sad end to a pretty old beast, although someone might piece it back together as a project car:

https://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/bellmore-1975-oldsmobile-delta-88/6939988978.html Seller clearly no longer finds old cars fun

https://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/rocky-point-65-ford-galaxie-500/6938977361.html This vert needs mechanical work but looks much better

https://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/miller-place-1977-mgb/6939568936.html Scary rust. If this was painted white instead of maroon, it would be haded to the crusher already

    https://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/east-islip-1977-mgb/6939125353.html Much better MG option

https://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/ronkonkoma-1964-chevy-chevelle-malibu/6938904104.html Some wagon mania at play here, but pretty cool driver. Needs more pics.

I'll take the GMC Camper Special, what a nice truck. It needs a steering wheel but they make repros now or any number of aftermarket ones would fit too.

The little Datsun pickup is a screaming deal, I'd buy that in a second. You're so lucky to have those still around out there in the land of no road salt.

The Chevelle SS convertible is gorgeous.

True for virtually any vintage car. I could do just fine without ever seeing another chrome Edelbrock or Moroso open element air cleaner.

There is a very practical reason for those open air cleaners.... BREATHING! Some of those vintage ones constricted airflow so badly on those engines that it is a wonder then went anywhere at all. I cut gaps in the top side of my '69 C20's air prison, so that it looks somewhat like a tripod, and I swear it must have doubled the torque on the engine. The day after I did this, we drove it on I-90 over the Rockies in Montana, and it was able to pull/accelerate up every grade the highway could throw at it, whereas before it would struggle up those same grades.

And also with the aftermarket carb, there could be fit issues with the stock air cleaner
