Well, there is no way, IS THERE?, that the glass is 65% tinted (65% opaque?)

I always thought that the normal tinting was a percentage number, something like 25, 30, 35 or 50.

    It can be hooked up.

    You probably can't do it.

I linked you to a 256 page PDF that provided copius instructions.

Almost everything can be summarized -- the problems with doing that include the omission of important details.

As MT (Mark Twain) once said, "Sorry, I didn't have time to write you a short post."

Free country, but we don't need to write our posts as if they are text messages -- not that I find it all that difficult to read. But it does take longer to read.

The current situation with the steering wheel button is NOT ideal.

It will almost certainly be corrected in future MY's.

    Sir
you are extremely right, you should be concerned,i have a b6 06 2.oT and the AC takes around 15 min to cool, a outside parked car in summer.
I thk, there is something wrong with the ac's.I suspect the gas they use.

Thanks Cardriver06. I have decided a while ago NOT to buy the Passat. I'm planning to keep the car that I'm buying for several years so I did an extensive research about the VW Passat. I still really like the distinctive design and the feel behind the steering wheel BUT I became deeply concerned with the several terrible reliability reports (see consumer report, JD Powers & others) and the poor quality of their customer service as I called all the 3 dealers in my area and got wrong information on 2 different issues. Also test drove it 3 times and it is true that the AC is WEAK.. I don't think I'm being harsh as I'm comparing to my long experience with several Toyota's & Honda's that I owned before..

Just traded in my '03 Passat GLX Wagon (V6) for a 2006 Passat Sedan (v6). Praying that the rotor issues have passed!

    First... love the 280hp!

Second... Happy to see that the telephone button can work - I will look into it. Dealer told me that it wasn't an option! The Camry's have it!

Third... I would have to agree on the weak AC. I think the vents are located too high. I've noticed that the AC works better on 60 degrees rather than LO.

Fourth... DOES ANYONES KEY WORK WITH THE CONVENIENCE WINDOWS??? You are supposed to be able to hold down the unlock button and allow all of the windows to roll down and vice versa w/ holding the lock button. (as in the past by turning the key left or right in the drivers door)

Tinted windows---I got my windows tinted bronze (Mocha exterior). I haven't had any issues with my antenna/reception on radio or sat. I think my windows are tinted at 35% all around.

All in all - I'm happy with my '06. :shades: Although I'm waiting for something to go wrong. I had numerous rotor problems with my '03 as well as loss of the fuel pump while on the freeway doing 80! And why did they change the cup holders in the middle? You can't fit 2 cups there. :surprise:

PS - VW Customer Service needs to watch their orientation videos again! Never pleased with the service. :(

does it work in yours? the manual says the 2006 passat 3.6 can do this (like the Infinitis) but I can't seem to make it work and the dealership doesn't know anything about it.

I'm reading the reviews on the 2006 Passat Sedan regarding Air Coniditioning. I test drove the new wagon yesterday, and this is the perfect car for me in every respect, hauling around two kids, safety, handling, and enough standard equipment to make me happy. My worry is first the A/C. I live in Texas, and I need a really good A/C for the summer. The car I test drove came out of a covered parking garage, but I am really worried based on comments here and the experience I had with a 2002 Audi I owned. My other question is reliability. It seems that VW has improved in the last 2 years. Can somebody help me????

    Hi, Bill,
Did you buy the car at last? Can you share more info? such as how much did you pay, etc. I am also planning to buy a 06 Value edition.

Go to a tint shop. They should have a light meter that measures the tint and the UV levels.

I think you have a pretty good price-- Is it brand new or got some miles? I bought an 06 2.0t Lux edition-- I believe the main diff is VE has leatherette and Lux has real leather, + some trim around the back windows and the interior lighting is less on the VE-- otherwise same vehicle-- I paid 23,125 out the door which i thought was a great price-- car had 5k miles..I preferred the leather, since leatherette is fairly new product and was not informed of durability...other items to me were minor...
Is that price out the door or will they tack on dealer blah this and dealer blah that??
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Sounds like you got a great deal on a great car.

BTW: Leatherette has been out for a while. I have it in my 2004.5 Passat. BMW's have had letherette in them for some time now. My experience with "fake" leather has been good. It looks as new today as it did 2 years ago when the car was new.

I have been looking around town for a 06 passat 2.0T, pkg 1. While most of the dealer are keep numbers the themselves, I got a price of 23600+taxes/fees, for that car. I am located in Detroit, MI area. Is that a good deal, because some of the discussion claim to have $3500 worth rebates.
Any inputs are appreciated. I have like 3 weeks to go, before making a decision.

The A/C is not as strong as other cars that I've owned, however, I live in GA (triple digit temps) and what I've found to work is to drive with all windows down with the A/C button on full fan blast for a minute or two, roll windows up, then press the recirculation button. The A/C cools air in the cabin alot quicker (almost freezing), then I turn recirc. button off. It's a pain for all those steps, but works.

I think you can get it lower... I am in the same area and looking at a similar car. drop me an email and we may work together..

I just purchased a 2006 Passat 2.0T sedan with package 2, 17" wheels, and rubber mats. The sticker was just over $29,000. I had a trade in with about $2500 in equity. My final price after everything was $23,000 for the car. So far, I really like it. I feel the air conditioning is weak also. The high temps here in St. Louis have made me keep the a/c turned up high to keep the car cool. My plan is to get the windows tinted in the near future. I can't get the windows to raise/lower with the remote either. I didn't see anything in the manual that indicated it was only available on the 3.6 model. If anyone else has more information, I'd like to know.

"I can't get the windows to raise/lower with the remote"

This feature is not available in NA. If you know someone with a VAG-COM computer cable hookup you can activate this feature. :)

I recently purchased a Passat 2.0T the last week in June for my wife and purchased a Passat 3.6L the 1st week in July for myself. After spending a considerable amount of time trying to program the vehicle to raise/lower the windows with the remote, I took the vehicle to the dealership. They couldn't get the feature to work either so they contacted VW for guidance. VW indicated that the feature is not available on any 2006 or 2007 Passat regardless of the engine size or accessories. They further indicate the feature should not have been included in the manual. I hope this helps.
  • intruder1intruder1 Member Posts: 5
What is a VAG-COM computer cable? VW indicated the feature is not available on 06' and 07's. Were you able to get the function activated?

Alientech offers a module that will do it:

    Hi, Intruder,

Since you owned both 2.0T and 3.6L models of Passat, would you share your thoughts on the two. (Test-drive just won't tell the whole story, you know.)

When comparably equipped, the 3.6L is about $3k more than the 2.0T. On paper, the 3.6L doesn't seem much faster than 2.0T, yet it drinks more gas. With today's gas price and future trend, it is a concern. What other differences are there? Which model would you recommend more highly?

    Thanks in advance.

    you sure about that?

Hi, I'm new here. Just bought an '06 Passat 2.OT with pkg 2 and Dynaudio. Very sweet car and loving it except: WHAT'S UP WITH THE FRONT CUP HOLDERS?

They are too large for any standard size Starbucks or Peets coffee cup, water bottle, commute mugs, etc. What was VW thinking? (The '03 Passat loaner I drove awhile back did not have this problem.)

Does anyone know if there are any inserts or other solutions?
  • jtlajtla Member Posts: 388
Thanks for the info. According to VW's web site (below link and then click on "engine comparison chart"), 3.6L sprints 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds (auto), while 2.0T in 6.9 manual and 7.4 auto. I did not mean that 3.6L is slow. Instead, I think that 2.0T performs quite well with only about half the engine size.

Yeah…the 2.0T is a gem…it would be my choice…especially if you live at high altitudes.

I prefer the lighter weight over the front tires than the additional power…plus if you like aftermarket the 2.0T has mods (as the 1.8T did).

As far as performance goes, you'll notice that the 3.6 has better passing power at high speeds.

As far as refinement goes, the V6 should be quieter and smoother over the rev range.

That's what I noticed when I went from my Accord V6 to my current car, the Audi A4 2.0T CVT.

I think the 2.0T is a fantastic engine overall. Great mileage AND performance. The engine and CVT work very well together. The only thing I don't like about the turbo is the "groaning" noises it makes at low engines speeds.

I drive my 2006 Passat 3.6L 90-95% highway. I consistently get 32 mpg alternating between premium (93) and regular (87). I normally set my cruise @75 and top off the tank about every 250 miles.
  • 150mphclub150mphclub Member Posts: 316
my 3.6 is super quick, especially in that 50 to 75 mph acceleration need to get by a semi on a two lane road.
  • oxx93oxx93 Member Posts: 67
Picked mine up 2 weeks ago and love the car. Especially love the 18" rims. Have not seen alot around here (Chicago). Paid 31,6 for a car that stickered at 38,6. I agree on the previous comment on the cup holders, they do not hold anything still. Otherwise a great car.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Why do you use 87 octane? What does VW recommend?
  • markcincinnatimarkcincinnati Member Posts: 5,343
    These cars require Premium.

These cars require more gas if you do not use Premium -- using less than Premium is a false economy -- it costs more.

The electronics do a decent job at preventing engine damage, but like a sling for a broken arm, the long term use of regular will have its consequences.

The reason these cars perform well is because they have higher compression ratios. These ratios permit higher power to be generated and when used with the correct fuel octane, perform at their maximum efficiency.

If the tank fill up is 20 gallons, the add-on cost to fill up per grade is $2.00. Using Premium will cost $4.00 per tankful over regular, typically, i.e.

The combination of reduced performance, efficiency and ultimately longentivity is easily worth the $4.00.

If you want to demonstrate "I make more money than you" as in the Passat commercials, then go ahead, use regular, since it actually costs, rather than saves.
  • ivan_99ivan_99 Member Posts: 1,681
Wow, that mileage is quite impressive. I suppose it is a combination of FSI and gearing.

With that high speed and large motor I would be impressed with 25% less (24mpg or so).
  • cardriver06cardriver06 Member Posts: 47
well the AC is not good.Secondly it started smelling. So now the dealership is looking in to it.But the counter guys says all passats smell mold,if you use the AC very oftern.
    Dang....i really don;t like this.

Since 2006 Passat is not anymore build on more expensive Audi platform/hardware in Germany like the previous model (2001.5 - 2005), it's not anymore considered as the best value among the VW line of cars. As a matter of fact, the new Jetta and Rabbit (ex-Golf)are all built on the same platform/hardware as Passat with the only substantial difference - the size.

In this regard, other important features like gas mileage and cost of ownership should be considered when choosing 2006 Rabbit vs. 2006 Jetta (both seems a better value overall than Passat right now factoring-in the price).
  • ivan_99ivan_99 Member Posts: 1,681
The “new” Passat/Jetta platform is supposedly stiffer than the “old” A6 platform.

I think, but have not validated, that the new Passat with the 2.0T is pretty close in price to the 2.0T Jetta.

I think when equipped the same you’d pay a “little” more and gain a “little” more…size, material quality, design etc…weather or not you put value in the “little” differences I suppose is the point.

The A6 plays against high rollers like MB E, 5 series etc…so I don’t think it’s economically feasible to use the ASF in a $20Kish vehicle…though I suppose a 3.6 Passat can be compared against some Luxury/near Luxury automobiles.

I recently purchased a new 2006 passat 3.6. two weeks ago. After bring it home the right head light burnt out two days later. Total mileage at this point was 106. I have noticed constant condensation in this headlight. I called my dealer and was told that this is normal and even said that VW has put out a bulletin saying this is normal and they are not responsible for replacing. The other headlight is perfectly dry. I'm having a hard time believing this is normal and in some way may have contributed to the original light burning out. When I contacted VW of America I began to get the real run around. Has anyone had similar issues. Buying a new car should be a happy experience however VW has left a bad taste and ruined the entire experience.

Any words of wisdom as to how best to get this issue resolved will be welcomed.

I am in the process of installing HID Lights but I need to disable the DRL first, is there other way of disconnecting this feature other than visiting the dealer to change it through the computer, I was reading that other VW models can cut a wire or relay and it can be done

My Passat 2.0T is two months old. Love the car. But last week I was driving and my wipers started going on and changing speeds and stopping and starting randomly. Then they stopped for awhile during which time I couldn't get them to go. Then they started the random wiping thing. It's at the dealers today.

    Anyone else ever experience this?
  • standard_chimpstandard_chimp Member Posts: 15
Wiper Gone Wild follow-up. Dealer just called and my car is ready. They said it was a 'programming issue'.
  • gc01gc01 Member Posts: 1
There is a service bulletin for this, as your dealer said. You can see it here:

    http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Volkswagen/1141027200000_1143100800000_9406-02/940602- .html

However, the burn-out of the headlight, if it were attributed to a leaky gasket around the assembly, I would THINK would be covered. Print out the TSB, take it to your service manager, and highlight the part that says "unless damage is found." Make them prove the burned out light is not being caused by the condensation.

    Good luck.
