I'm guessing it was after an hour. Drive home is less than 20 minutes and I went in and ate dinner before I checked the tires. I am pretty sure it is another electronic glitch. I am not sure how the pressure is transmitted from the tire to the on-board computer but since this happened right after a state inspection I am guessing it might have had something to do with removing the tires and putting them back on.

should have let tires to cool down.
I would still pump tires just a little.

Where do you park? Outside or garage? What is temperature when you check pressure and what temperature is early morning?

I read somewhere that each 10F translates to 1PSI change. Pump tires accordingly.

One more thing. If you can see that tires are underinflated then they are severly underinflated.

My friendly (!) local dealer has several 06, 4cyl., standard transmission left on the lot. I'd like to hear folks' experiences with the '06.
    Thanks!

Found a 2006 passat (2.0T 6 speed automatic with package #2)that I love but I have a question about the pricing. It has 29,000 miles on it but the dealer is only allowing $6420 discount, so he is asking $21,995. The MSRP is $28,415 but I'm wondering what I should offer. Seems like there should be a bigger discount for that many miles. Am I just dreaming?
  • standard_chimpstandard_chimp Member Posts: 15
I let the tires cool overnight. All four read 30-31 PSI the next day. I called my dealer and they said "Oh, that sensor is very sensitive" so I over inflated my tires to 35 PSI, drove around, and the warning light is still on. So it's back to the dealer again!

I am looking for a 2006 passat and the dealer had only one car I like. The MSRP is 30180 and the dealer offer me 28581 with 0 APR for 60 month. How much should I cut the price to make a good deal? I still prefer the 0 APR for 60 month. I am in Madison WI area.
    thanks a lot.

Hi - you might want to also post your question in the Passat Prices Paid & Buying Experience discussion. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

"so I over inflated my tires to 35 PSI, drove around, and the warning light is still on"

I guess it is quite good indication that sensors are broken

    or

now they indicate too high pressure ;-)

It clearly says "under inflated". That was the remedy my dealer suggested - said I need to drive over 8 miles before the warning resets.

And what is most annoying is that it locks my computer screen onto the under inflated warning. Normally I keep the range up and I buy gas accordingly so now I have to monitor that tiny gas gauge.

I do love the way this car drives but perhaps the Germans should buy their electronics from Japan in the future!

    Hey,

That dealer offer is way too high for an 06 when they have had 2007 on the lots for a few months now. Check out the post a couple above, they were offered a discount of 6500 roughly. You could easily get a 2007 passat well below the price quoted for a 2006.

2007 pricing, roughly the same MSRP for example. You should be able to get 8-10% off MSRP for the car, so let's take 10% for sake of easier math. That brings a 2007 model to 27000 plus ttl..etc, FOR A 2007. Now it's just a personal question. How much more is a 2007 worth to you. 2006 is already a year old and should be priced under this 27000 by at least a thousand or two I would guess. Check on www.carsdirect.com to get a rough estimate of what you should look for, but they are really high (2k over what i paid). You can get a 2007 easily for under invoice, so don't settle for a couple thousand under invoice for a year old 2006 model

Am curious as to how the Leatherette interiors of Passats holds up over time?

Also, for those with Leatherette, have you had problems with windows fogging from car sitting in sunny areas?

I don't know what "Leatherette" actually is. A type of Vinyl?

I don't know what "Leatherette" actually is. A type of Vinyl?

    Leatherette is vinyl.

I've never had an issue with fogging on my leatherette equipped Passat. As for standing up, it's been almost 18 months and it's wearing well.
  • ivan_99ivan_99 Member Posts: 1,681
Leatherette sounds better than vinyl :D
  • kurtamaxxxguykurtamaxxxguy Member Posts: 1,798
..or "off-gas" as the web site points out. Ironically, polyester fabrics do the same (and somewhat more than vinyl does). The off-gas is what gives the car its "new" smell, and is what fogs the windows.

I wonder if the leatherette in current Passat is similar to that used in older models?

Has anyone had problems with the Engine Light? I have taken my 06 Passat 2.0T to the dealer 3 times and each time, they give me a poor excuse for why it came on and they have resolved it and it comes right back on the next day...
  • goodieshannongoodieshannon Member Posts: 30
Okay, i had a 2007 2.0T Wagon that had the check engine lite on for almost two months! It took the dealer 6 weeks to repair it. It appears that there was some sort of voluntary recall "Patch" repair for that. Push your dealer and refuse to take the car back until they fix it. They also need to call VW in California for assistance, they do help dealers with repairs as well. Good Luck and keep pushing them to fix this.
  • work4vwwork4vw Member Posts: 1
It isn't locking your screen. Just click the OK button underneath on the computer lever. I have the same problem, but you have to click that button everytime you start your car.

I also had the check engine light come one as well. Just had it fixed, with no explanation except for the gas cap having something to do with it. Needed to be replaced with a tighter seal.

Wow! Thanks for the info...I have an appointment on Friday and will definitely let them know!!!
  • jetlag07jetlag07 Member Posts: 11
Hey cardriver06, did you ever obtain any resolution on your problem? This is my first year with the 2.0t, and the heater is crap! Coolant temp reaches right temp, but the heat coming out of the ducts with the selector at full warm is average, at best. I'd be interested in your reply?
  • jetlag07jetlag07 Member Posts: 11
Now that the '06 model has been thru at least one winter, I have to ask people in colder climes what their experience has been with interior heat delivery and effectiveness? Where I am the temps right now are down in the 20's, and the heat output in this car is just plain lousy. I start in up, and after running for about 10 mins, the coolant gauge isn't even off the mark. It takes about 10 more mins. of driving to get it up to operating temp, and even then the heat output is just warm, with the temp selector on high. This is by far the worst heater that I have experienced in any car...domestic or import, let alone one costing 30 grand. Heck, my g/f's hyundai accent puts out 3 times the heat in about 1/3 the time! If anyone has similar problems and has managed to get it resolved, I'd love to hear from you!
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Could it be something as simple as a faulty t-stat or a blockage in the cooling system?

Time to call the dealer IMHO.
  • kurtamaxxxguykurtamaxxxguy Member Posts: 1,798
Did you or service shop mix anti-freezes? Another VW owner had reported a heater core becoming filled with gel like material after that had been done to his car.
  • jetlag07jetlag07 Member Posts: 11
Hey Kurt, thanks for the reply. Nope, nothing like that...I think you're referring to the dextrol type of coolant used in new GM vehcules, for example. This stuff is the original red anti-freeze, but the dealership didn't actually change anything...they just verified that the heat output was according to specs. It just takes such an extremely long time for the system to get up to operating temp...but I have to admit that once the car has been running for about a half hour it seems to ouput ok heat. Just never had one that took such a long time to get to that point. I've come to the conclusion that it is a design issue, and not a defect. Although the A/C compressor is designed not to engage (while selected to the auto mode) at sub freezing temps when not selected to "defrost", I believe that selecting the "economy" mode produces slightly better heat. I'm not 100% sure on this, and will investigate further. Of all the cars out there that I have driven, I've gotta say that Ford have the best heaters...bar none!
  • krzysskrzyss Member Posts: 849
could be good. It might mean that engine generates power to move car instead of heat.

Has anyone noticed the terrible design flaw with the 2006 Passat v6 cupholders? I just purchased a 2006 this weekend(because of the 0% interest VW was offering thru today), but to my surprise, once I went to use the cupholders, I realized they are flawed! You cannot put two medium-sized or large-sized coffe cups in at the same time. Also, the front cupholder hole is smaller than the back one...also meaning you cannot put two of the same sized coffee cups in at the same time...they wobble and are not stable..has anyone realized this, and if so, is there any type of remedy or retro-fitting mold that one can purchase anywhere?
Help! I live on Starbucks, and really need to use my cupholders..it's a major feature for me! Yes, I have a life, but this is important!
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Zee Passat iz a Jerman car. Zee cupholders iz a compromise to ze Amerikan insistance of eating in ze car. Ze car is for driving not for dining.

It's a cupholder. If that's the worst you can find, consider yourself lucky.
  • jetlag07jetlag07 Member Posts: 11
Yeah, except my right foot might be too frozen by that point! lol
  • jetlag07jetlag07 Member Posts: 11
Actually, the guy's got a valid point. It's not a big issue for me, but why the heck didn't they design something like the cupholder in the rear seat armrest? Chrysler can do it, so...The good part is the removable, washable plastic insert, which is great for when the drink spills over because there is nothing to secure it in place...

I cannot believe my salesman did not tell me this when I placed a custom order the last week in Nov06 with delivery date of Feb07 for an 07Passat Wagon (2.0T, Sports Pkg #2, Nav, Dynaudio(gbox cd changer),zenon lights). I thought I would have the best of both worlds with the aux input jack in the glove box next to the cd changer but with an either/or choice I think I made a mistake. After reading your posting today I called my dealer and they are going to see if they can change my order in Germany to the iPOD adapter since they have not yet generated a VIN which means the car has not been built. My fall back will be to have the dealer disable the CD changer and hook up the iPOD adapter but I would prefer the factory option vs. the extra $$$ at dealer. Thank you very much for your posting!!! I would have been VERY disappointed when the car arrives in two months to find out the iPOD aux input would not work.

I have an 06 2.0 auto. My problem is when I shift from park to reverse and reverse to drive, there is a delay to engage in gear. I brought it in and dealer said it was normal for Passats to shift that way. I'm not sure I'm buying that, I've owned a many of different type vehicles and they all engage as soon as you shift. Anyone else have this problem,or is the dealer correct. Thanks in advance...
  • goodieshannongoodieshannon Member Posts: 30
I had a 2007 2.0T and traded up to a 2007 3.0T All Motion Wagon (due to the same problem you are experiencing). There is a repair for this problem, a patch that the dealer must install for you. Insist on it! Don't know where you are located, we are in Rockville, Maryland (Congressional Motors does my repairs). Good Luck!
  • rodolanrodolan Member Posts: 6
I'm located in South Louisiana. Did your car get repaired and if so was it fixed correctly? Thanks
  • kurtamaxxxguykurtamaxxxguy Member Posts: 1,798
"according to specs"... thanks for info. All VW's I've driven since 1970's have had weak heaters (perhaps it doesn't get that cold in Germany?). Sorry to hear that hasn't changed.
At least VW keeps the A/C off when it gets cold. A lot of GM cars insist on running A/C whenever recirculation mode is selected, even in the middle of winter.

I had Hidden Hitch 60851 installed on my 3.6 wagon today ($203 including installation and tax) and I am very pleased with it. It is not as visible as I feared and the bikes have plenty of clearance with my Thule carrier. They had to remove a plastic piece that protects the undercarriage to install it, but they were able to put it back in place after clipping a small section out around the hitch.
  • jetlag07jetlag07 Member Posts: 11
Yep, guess it's just something we have to live with...other than that, I really enjoy the car. I believe that the A/C compressor will cycle (regardless of outside temp) if the mode selecter in positioned in the "defrost" mode. For example, if I press the "econ" button, the advisory light extinguishes once I select "defrost" mode. This indicates that my selection is overridden by the internal program, which determines that "moisture free" air is required for maximum windshield defrosting. Once any other mode is selected, the advisory light again illuminates to confirm that "econ" mode is active, thereby isolating the compressor from the system. If I don't command "econ", then the compressor is by default depowered if the outside temp is anywhere above +3c.

Please tell me.. I recently bought a Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS. It came with a power cord that plugs into the power outlet. When plugged in there is a small red LED light that goes on. I do not like pulling the plug in and out so much as the fit is a bit snug. When I shut off the engine, I notice that the light remains on. If I leave the plug in with the engine and car off and the light remains on all the time without the GPS attached to it, will this compromise my car battery? Thanks for your help.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
My experience with power outlets that are always hot is that the LED light doesn't draw enough power to adversely affect the battery.

I had a charger plugged into my old Accord for 6 years before replacing the battery.

    Hi guys,
recently I saw an ad featuring an used 2006 Passat 2.0T with 112.000 kilometers on it (70k miles), my question is should I even think about buying the car? Well I know it did 112k in just a year or so (thus I`m guessing it didn`t spend that much time at the dealer and it was probably highway driven) and I was thinking... ummm... here in Canada the car sells new for $30k (CAD) and the price of the one I found is $19k so that`s quite a lot under...
oh... and no warranty is left on the vehicle...

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks! :)
  • jerispassatjerispassat Member Posts: 2
I wouldn't, if there is no warranty..I just purchased my 5th VW about 2 weeks ago..love them, but I would seriously think about this, especially with no warranty..as luck would have it, you'll probably have some problems. I just got a 2006 with 0% interest, so you should check in your area if they are doing that..if so, you would be geting a brand new car(well it's a 2006 but has never been purchased) instead of buying a used one. Many of the dealerships are trying to get rid of the '06 models to try and sell the new '07's...so, check it out. it's a heck of a deal!
  • ivan_99ivan_99 Member Posts: 1,681
If you're looking for used cars and that one is within your budget I say go for it.

If the price is comparable to other used Passats with similar mileage, but is an 06 I say it's a good deal...so if you can get an 04 or 05 for 19K and this 06 come along with the same price, I'd go for it.

Also...if somebody is racking up that kind of mileage they “should” know that a prospective buyer would like maintenance records; I'd look for those to ensure all the proper oil changes had taken place.
  • lenny1975lenny1975 Member Posts: 2
Not sure if we are having the same problem. Ours is a 3.6 model but have been told the transmission in the 2.0 and 3.6 are exactly the same. We are experiencing awkward and harsh shifts from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. On occasion, we experience a harsh downshift also. These are not smooth and seem obviously abnormal. I have had the same experience with some people telling me this seems wrong with others stating the performance is normal and will get better over time (also stating this is a new transmission for VW.) My wife and I also had some electrical problems that apparently have gone away; e.g. sunroof not closing once, one-touch on window controls not responding once. We also had the car parked at two different dealerships shortly after purshasing it due to not starting after fueling. The repair required days without the car while the dealership went through troubleshooting with an office in Germany. I too argued with VWoA about replacing the vehicle and was ultimately told no. I did not however file a lemon law complaint due to researching Georgia's state laws regarding the matter. Even with these problems, the vehicle did not fall within guidelines. The past few months with the car (we just purchased in September) have been trouble free.

In conclusive response to your question, if you are referring to the same type of performance with the transmission as I have detailed above, then my answer is 'no.' I do not believe this to be normal.

    If you would, please respond.
  • jetlag07jetlag07 Member Posts: 11
I also had a hard shifting issue with a 2.0t purchased in July/06. Dealer researched item and discovered that an "upgrade" for hard shifting was available. This involved replacement of a transmission valve and software update. Car now seems to shift normally although shift points are at a slightly higher rpm. I'd definitely check with the dealer to find out if your serial # is affected.

I purchased the 2007 3.6 4motion wagon a few months ago. I have 6k miles on it and on just the other day the engine backfired and shut down. When I started the car, the engine would turn on then shut right down. This happened just after filling the tank with gas (for what that's worth). Yes, it's under warranty and was towed off to the dealership.

I am writing this post because it's been a week and the dealership cannot figure out what is wrong. They initially said it was what they were calling a 'module' in the ignition that needed to be replaced. It took 2 days to get that part in which they did and it didn't work.
They told me yesterday that they need to bring in a specialist to continue the diagnosing.

Can anyone offer any advice? I love the car but am pissed that I bought this high end vehicle and now I have to drive a crappy rental they provided, a compact hundai!

I purchased a 2007 3.6T All Wheel Motion in August '06. Since that time this vehicle has been in the shop 6 or 7 times for: tire pressure too low (4 times) airbag default sensor lite (1) loud noise when backing up and turning steering wheel (2) this problem they say does not happen when they have the car! It still happens to me - when other people are in the car they hear it too (very loud inside and outside of the vehicle. Does anyone else have this problem (or had this problem)? This was our 2nd VW purchase (it was actually a trade-up after we purchased a 2007 2.0T Wagon and it had problems for over a month we decided to just get rid of that one and traded up to a 3.6T Wagon All Motion) I have never owned new cars that have so many issues!!!!!! I will get rid of this VW and never buy VW again within the next year, I swear!

I bought this car in July 2006 and have not had any problems. Just thought I would share some observations:

    Cup holders don't

Heat and A/C unit sometimes give a musty smell when put on

I am constantly being shot the high beams from other drivers b/c they think my high beams are on. Does anyone else get this? If I am driving home from work and it is dark out (now, winter) I have at least 5 drivers flash at me as though my high beams are on.

You can have the dealer adjust them lower.

I had my previous Infiniti adjusted higher...because I didn't like the HID's sharp line between light and no light so close to me - made me a nervous driver.
  • birdboybirdboy Member Posts: 158
If i could have bought this as an option on my 2006 Passat I would have. VW ,what were you thinking?? This has become a saftey issue with me . As I drive the NYS thruway frequently at night the suv headlights and zenons blind me. Has anyone installed an after market auto dim mirror? Can anyone recommend one? as always, thanks for any suggestions
