I think the Renault is a 16, and the car immediately next to the Anglia is a Vauxhall Victor. Car in front of the fintail looks like a Datsun 1200 wagon, and to the left of the fintail is a Clark Griswold style Austin Maxi.

Magnette should have fun with that photo link.

Yes - Sainsburys are the second largest UK supermarket chain (after Tescos) and they must pretty much cover the whole country. Its a good link and will show a wide range of store locations in many areas.
Can't imagine when I last saw a Datsun Estate in this country either.

The Vauxhall Victor is one of the last series - the FE - and is pretty rare now although so are most of the cars in that shot now.

Actually the name is a gross misnomer...the car is a Studebaker, 100%. Packard had nothing to do with it, and there isn't so much as a Packard bolt in it.

I agree from Packard one name

2nd generation Acura legend. Neat car. Could still get a stick in it. Even the 4 door.

2001 Toyota Celica GT-S shown below:

Always liked these even though it marks the last gen of the Celica line. It was light and built to lower costs by only offering a 3 door hatch and a choice of two 1.8 liter engines. When the market moved away from little sport coupes the Celica was finished.
Production numbers reported by Wiki: Celica sales hit 52,406 units in 2000, but dropped sharply to 14,856 in 2003. Just 8,710 Celicas were sold in 2004, and only 3,113 were sold in 2005.

I liked that generation too. Reminded me a lot of the Acura RSX. Always wanted one of those too. Nicer than an Integra. Roomier drivers seat.

Bingo, and I think beside the Marina is a Chrysler Alpine (Simca based)

Hyacinth was visiting her sister Violet, who has a Mercedes, swimming pool, and room for a pony. That Rover was cast perfectly for Mrs. Bucket, being an ordinary car with a mildly pretentious badge.

I think the car in the pic, with its wheels and trim, is the Rover 216 rather than the Honda Ballade it was based on.

Mustang LX 5.0. I will guess it is an 88 but no way I can tell exactly what year, certainly not from this angle. I looked at one in about 1987 (a hatch 5 speed). came close but it really was not a very suitable family car!

Other cars in the pic with the Rover similar to the Bucket family car appears to be a Datsun 210 sedan in front of the Rover (unsure of UKDM name, Sunny?), a Mini beside that, BMW E30 sedan beside that, Yugo GV beside that (has to be incredibly rare in the UK now), Ford Sierra beside that, maybe rear quarter of a Fiat 128 beside that. Metro to the right of the Rover, in the row in the distance I see a couple of what looks like Mk2 Fiesta and a two tone Fiat 124 sedan or possible Lada derivative at the end of the row.

Yup that's a 1990 Mustang LX 7-Up/5.0. The white over green and special wheels were unique to the 7-UP version. A planned co-promotion between Ford and the soda bottler fell through.

My 1986 Mustang GT/5.0 was very similar with white over dark grey, white interior and telephone dial wheels. In '86 GTs had the same bodywork as the LXs. That changed in '87
IIRC and the GTs302 V8s got somewhat different styling details.

backing out, a 2nd gen Scirroco. pointing at the big rover sedan behind all the people. And I think the 2nd car in is a Mazda (our GLC?) Ford Sierra with the trailer hitch.

Good spotting. Mazda was sold there as 323 IIRC, and the sedan behind the people appears to be a Triumph Dolomite. At right in the background I believe I see an E32 7er, a new car at the time.

Now back in time a bit:

The car on the right is an Austin/Morris Maxi; it's tiny sibling, a Mini is behind the chap pushing the grocery cart.

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,715
makes you realize how tiny a mini really was, since it is dwarfed by a Beetle.

The car at right is related to the Maxi, but is an ancestor. Hint,: the D registration suffix is for 1966.

From right to left: an Austin 1800 (the Landcrab), a Beetle, a Mini, a Rover 2000, and a Triumph 2000 (I think).

I thought ab348 might get the landcrab. Beyond the Triumph appears to be another Dolomite.

One last glimpse to the island today, little views of quite a few odd cars here:

    Red Renault R5. Maybe '79ish.
    Pewter Peugeot 305.

I see the roof of a yellow Citroen 2CV to the left, near the man's head and beyond that I make out the tail of a red Saab 95 wagon. They're probably the oldest cars visible.

Good eye, the 2CV and Saab were some of the obscure ones I was going for. 2CV was sold in the UK until the 1990 model year, I believe, pretty crazy, but they had a cult.

In the rightmost row at the end I believe I see the elongated roof of a Citroen CX, perhaps one of those Simca Alpine things beside it, and the beige/tan thing at the front of the row is a Skoda 105/120. Blue hatch next to the R5 is a Datsun 310 in NA, not sure about UK, maybe another Sunny.

A red VW Jetta in front row (do they call it that in the UK?) I think that's a white Renault 4 at the left end of front row (oldest car?)

The VW Fox we got in the US was a Brazilian-built three door wagon. There's a nice blue Camry wagon in the front row and behind it a Honda wagon of some sort (Civic?)

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,607
Yep on the Jetta (name also used in the UK) and the Renault 4, much like the one driven by Danny DeVito in 'Romancing the Stone'.

The dark blue wagon appears to be a Peugeot 405, and beside it a white Suzuki Swift, maybe the hottish GTI model. The angular tall wagon near the building is a Nissan Prairie (sold here as a Stanza). A Fiesta to the left of that Nissan, and what appears to be an Austin/Rover Maestro beside that. Car to the right of the Nissan could be a mid 80s pre-aero Granada.

    Some more things:

    image
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,415
Ford Fiesta, Renault 18 and likely a Lada sedan. Not sure of the silver number on the end of the row, maybe a Toyota of some sort as it reminds me of a Tercel.

At the edge of the lot I see a Mini, what may be a Lancia, and an Austin Allegro I believe.

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,715
The silver one looks like a 2nd generation civic 2 door hatch.

Good eye ab348, I see you are also an enthusiast of malaise era metal. That Lada with the loud paint scheme really has my attention, and I agree on the Tercel. I think the car beside the Mini might be a Mk 1 Vauxhall Cavalier.

Renault 18 was actually sold on this side of the pond for a few years.

Far right white mid 80s golf. Next to a tan prior generation. And mid center, 2 and 4 door escorts.

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,607
Not sure if the tan car is a Mk1 Golf, window shape doesn't look right. Looks like a Mazda 323 to the right of it. Escorts were the top selling car in the UK then IIRC.

A few other easy (to me) spots in the pic, I will pick one off, in the leftmost aisle near trees, a Citroen BX.
