    Hi Stickguy
Yes that is a BMC 1100 - the grille on that one indicates it is an Austin - the horizontal bars are slightly crinkly - whereas the contemporary Morris would have had straight bars across.
And it is Morris Traveller - my first car was one of those.
That Ford is LHD which is unusual as it is British registered (Jan-Jul 1967) and it was issued in London. It's a Cortina Mk II. There were a lot of cars registered to foreign tourists and then they drove them home at the end of their stay - it was tax efficient in some places to do that.

Hi Andy - That Anglia is the upmarket version - the Anglia Super - which had the 1200 engine - and was known in that form as the 123E.

I thought this is somewhere just off Whitehall in Westminster but can't place it. I think the the red brick blocks on the right are at the back of Horse Guards Parade

I just realized that's a period photo, the cladding on the store looks like something hipster "designers" would bring back today.

We got this as a BMW 2000 with these oblong headlights from about 1966 but there was also a 2000 TI and a model called Tilux as well
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yup, that is a 1970 BMW 2000. The 2 liter sedan was one of the most popular of the Neue Klasse Bimmers in Euro markets but for some reason it was never exported to the USA.

On the same theme as that Meteor, not a period pic, but looks like one:

Looks pretty similar but aren't those '54 Mercury tail lights? Look at the roof, it's a Merc Monterey Sun Valley!

3rd from the right, a '49 or '50 Pontiac. I would need to see the grille.
    And, 2nd from left, a '56 Pontiac.

That gold car 4th from the right looks like a '59 Olds; maybe the newest one in the picture

got all the old standbys. Falcon over on the left heading away. A boxy white rambler on the right curb, and up toward the top of that row, a two-tone that I thought was a 1960 Ford, until I tried to blow it up and it got blurry but looked more like a batwing chevy!

a real offball on the curb, bottom right pointing toward the camera, a Checker wagon, with another one at the very bottom of the picture, side view.

Those 2 wagons look like Cross Country Ramblers but not the same year. Bottom pic looks like '56 and the other one parked toward camera is newer. Maybe '59?

darn. thought the front end looked just like a Checker. Oh well. Not my era!

I'll grab the nice Loewy Studebaker coupe, it's a 2-door which really showcases the sleekness of the design. There's a decade worthof cas i that photo ranging from th early 50s to about 1961.

FWIW, they are both '58s. They are just different trim levels, the one on the street is a Super and the bottom one is a Custom.

There seem to be a few Rambler Wagons - apart from the foreground and the black roofs one parked towards us, there is a white Rambler Wagon going towards the building - it's following a 59 Chevy.
Given the white Rambler American parked there I would say the local Rambler dealer was probably doing ok around there
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,154
Those Ramblers (sedans and wagons) have that very distinctive rear door profile, jumps out at me. Of course, my grandma has a Rambler sedan of that era, so it's a long-term memory...

I think cars here aged better then as well as now, and there were more older cars on the road in the PNW than in much of the country.

I notice the 55 Chevy convertible backing in or pulling out might have a continental kit, or there is a weird anomaly on the road that gives that impression.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675

Newest car in the pic maybe the 62 Olds 4 door HT in the foreground?

Further back in the row I see what appears to be a foreign car next to a 59 Plymouth, possibly a lower line MB Ponton, but I am not sure.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,756
that era especially was such a huge change in design. going from 52-54 to 62-64, seemed like way more than 1 decade of evolution.

Back in the mid-90s I was in Boise, ID for a week on business. One morning I was looking out the window of my hotel room and saw a tradesman pull into the parking lot to do some work there. He was driving a battered and faded but still serviceable 1949/50 Ford sedan. Unheard of in most places.

I can believe it. I recall a number of quirky old beaters still on the road when I was a kid, especially east of the mountains - but plenty of 50s and 60s material still used as DDs well into the 90s even on the west side. I particularly remember in the small town where my mom lives, a well-worn lowline 61 Ford sedan and a somewhat decrepit looking 58 Ford 2 door post on the road well into the mid 90s, and someone had a clean but definitely DD 57 Chevy sedan.. There was an old lady in town still driving a 56 Buick 4 door HT, and another in a 61 New Yorker - these cars could be spotted now and then into the 21st century.

My dad got into it for a bit, too - he drove the 60 Ford wagon and his 68 Fairlane a lot for a couple years, but I think he eventually tired of that, and wanted more amenities.

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
I think the 59 Chevrolet Wagon in the foreground is a Kingswood or a Parkwood as it has chrome trim along the side but not in quantities indicating a Nomad and it is not as sparse as a Brookwood - not sure how much chrome distinguishes Kingswood from Parkwood however

I remember when working in my first proper job in a suburban office in Hertfordshire - North of London - that an old chap who repaired roofs used to go out of his house opposite our office and drive off in a 1920's Clyno tourer- only time I ever saw one on the road - with his ladders on the side like a Fire Engine. He was still using it into the mid eighties when I changed jobs and years later I did see that car again at a car show by which time it had changed hands so he must have sold it on. Then again that is only as old then as my MG is now and I have used that to go to work into 2018 a couple of times although not since then - but not carrying ladders!

This is the same colour Clyno and probably the same model

Shoebox (1949-51) Ford can be seen just past the Chevy wagon and beyond that a GM from the same era. Funny that the oldest cars are parked together.

i'll call out the Pontiac coupe near phot center. I think I can make out a hood scoop, along w the styled wheels those suggest it is a 1966-67 Pontiac GTO

Maverick and Vega on the right. And 2 falcons today, an early one and about a 66. Early gremlin. And 2 that are worth money now center row, an IH scout and a Datsun 510.

And up top a SAAB wagon which must be rare. Is it a 96?

Great minds think alike! Seeing that pic earlier today sent me back to the source site which is a wonderful depository of vintage photos. I found this from November of 1966, taken in Clarendon, VT:

    image

Sadly, no 1960 Ford. But wait! The photographer wandered into the back lot of the dealership and snapped this image:

    image

Cars back then in New England got used up pretty quickly due to the climate and the use of road salt.

Te picture was taken in Rutland VT, SAABs were very popular in New England back then; It's impossible to tell whether it's a 95 or a 96. Another item popular in the Northern Tier is the Chevy K10 Blazer following an early Falcon.
