Based on the grill, the Shoebox Ford can’t be a 51. It’s a 49 or 50. Need to see the door handles to determine which year.

Zoomed in, the radiator emblem says Alvis. Pretty rare!
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
TD21 . I think this is the best version of the Alvis - they looked clumsier when they got vertical double headlights.

Still a surprising number of these about although virtually all of them stayed in Britain

    I think that's Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion.

On that note, I've discovered there's a geodesic dome house a few blocks from me - obscure too, a fad in the 70s.

Car at left appear to be an Austin 7 - a few more than 12 of those were made!

There were 51 factory built (50+1 prototype). A few other others were created from leftovers.

This car very well could be this one.

Which should end the debate over whether Ford sold that Cortina in the US.

Reminds me that for the longest time, one of the Ford dealers here had a shrunken version of the corporate Ford pylon sign - maybe only 6'-8' tall - with the blue Ford logo on the left and then the word "CORTINA" on the right. I think they finally took it down only sometime in the last 10 years or so.

The 1961 Olds caught my eye. I thought those were the ugliest rear end and taillight setup I'd ever seen in my few short years when I saw the tarp taken off one on night of the unmasking of the new models (remember when cars were covered before the introduction date?)

The rear doesn't look long enough for a 98 model, but the markings look right. No wheel covers?

American Motors Rambler wagon in front of the pickup truck.

Are there any foreign cars in that picture?

I've seen a few in the PNW, but I suspect they were very much a coastal thing in the US, if not a west coast thing. Maybe sold a few more in Canada due to the British connection. That sign would be collectible to someone, no doubt.

The period Matchbox car is even a similar color:

Yes, that was Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion which was built in the thirties and appeared at a Worlds Fair - I gather one of the two cars built was involved in an accident but there is film showing it turning on its axis - it had a single rear wheel.

My reason for putting those three oddities together was that in separate ways they approached a common design

The Tucker was rear engined and I think at least some were fitted with a horizontal six engine

The Dymaxion had a rear engine too

The third car, in Britain was the Burney Streamline - they only built twelve and none survive although a related model was built by Crossley (a British make not the US microcar) and on or two of those are around.

Anyway it was designed by an engineer called Burney who built airships, it had a rear engine and there is also a link to Alvis in the previous question as in the late twenties Alvis were the first British firm to build front wheel drive cars and Burney used their engine and transmission but rear mounted to make his rear engined car.

All a bit like the mid thirties Tatra too...

And yes, Austin did certainly build a lot more Sevens than any of the above...

About ten years ago there was an exhibition in London about Fuller and his geodesic domes - familiar to many for Radar domes among other stuff. They did show a picture and a model of the Dymaxion and I think someone is actually building a replica for some collector although I don't know how long that would take..
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
Back in Erie the blue and white car is I think about a 61 Dodge and the cream and black one is a later Dodge too

The Mk 2 Cortina sold in shedloads here although basic ones are now rare - its more likely to see a Lotus Cortina than a 1300

Funny how we had a mention of Peahtree in Atlanta - we were just watching news just now and they mentioned how much of Atlanta is Peachtree this or that - this was on CNN of course in relation to that election run-off.

I vaguely remember reading a fairly in-depth article in one of the car magazines late ‘60s/early ‘70s about the Dymaxion and Fuller. I wish I could remember where it ran.

Two rare ones! A Hillman Minx convertible and a '58(?) Edsel Villager wagon. i think I see a Mini behind the coke sign (rare in the US0

Where is the 58 Edsel "Villager"?

I see a 57 Mercury sedan or hardtop against the CocaCola sign posts and
a 58 Ford wagon on the left front.

And, speaking of wagons, a 1958 Plymouth.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
The 58 Ford wagon confuses me. I assumed a Country Squire but the shape of the trim on the open door would instead indicate a two-tone Country Sedan - however there was also a Del Rio Ranch Wagon in 58 - so which is it?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237

Also I see a 58 Plymouth Suburban and a passing 56 Chevrolet 4-door wagon. Is that a 210 Handyman or something else?

to the left of this car lot is a 55 Dodge sedan - is that a Plaza?

The Mini in the far distance looks like it has British plates but at magnification it has a US sized plate in a black space the size of one of ours...

The real rarity is that Minx convertible - It appears to be a Mk IIIA - which would be about 1961-63

I see a Studebaker Lark parked over the road in that entrance by the parking sign- the Mini is about to go past it

Finally next to the VW is a Rambler hiding a Dauphine
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,467
Just beyond the Mini at the left end of the line of cars parked off the street, is that a Studebaker Lark?

What is the white wagon parked on the road behind the Plymouth wagon's luggage rack?
    Is that your Edsel, Andy?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,647
I'd wager the 58 Ford Wagon is a Country Sedan - I don't see the (faux) wood side trim, and two tone paint wasn't as common on a lower line Ranch Wagon.

I also see the Lark beyond the Mini, in the line of parked cars. Further back, under a "Park" sign, I even get just a hint of a light colored 60 Ford wagon in the mix, at right.

I've seen this pic before, it is likely from 1962, with all of the World's Fair hoopla. The location is 700-900 or so Aurora Avenue, looking completely different now, filled in with mid-rise apartment buildings.

My bad, I miscalled that '58 Ford wagon. Under the Coca-Cola sign is a Renault Dauphine,
popular around the same time as the Minx

LOL. I finally found it. What a good eye! It's above the VW beetle in the near lot and a man walking on the sidewalk has his head at the lower bodyside of the Ford wagon.

There are several "Park" signs that I had to go through to get to the right one.

FWIW the car hiding the Dauphine is a Mercury Meteor (I think a '63). This was an intermediate size car (basically a re-trimmed Ford Fairlane) sold under the Mercury name. It didn't sell well. I always thought that giving the these cars the names they did, which were repurposed from specific trim levels of their full-size line, was a mistake.

You got it, the guy's head is touching the car, so to speak. 60 Ford has a pretty unmistakable beltline design, once you see it.
