My college roomie had one, a '58 IIRC. A very fun car, there were very few coupes, about 85% were roadsters IIRC.

I recognize most of these cars but the two-tone doesn't ring a bell. Possibly a 1954-ish Dodge?

Looks like a 59 Ford to the left of the Jeep Station Wagon. Oldie across the street appears to be a 41 Chevy.

Red Jeep All Steel wagon behind the two-tone.

    Surf's up!

Can't make out the year of the Caddy, tailights not visible. Faux woody Ford looks like a '62 and the green one is a '55 or '56.

Is that a Buick next to the Hillman wagon?

I think the Squire might be a 64. Hillman is a later (for the USDM) Minx (as opposed to the two door Husky wagon).
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
That red Mopar is a '64 Dodge 440, I think. The Polara had more tail lights.
  • tmarttmart Member Posts: 2,399
Yes, the Country Squire is a 64.

Interesting pic, The Red Mustang is a '64. Looks like a Honda next to it but I can't remember what they called it. Caddy is a '58 (Eldo?) and the wagon a ca. 1967 Ford.

The wagon is a 67 Mercury. On the right, a big Buick, maybe a 65 Wildcat.

I think the Caddy is a 58 (57 - short fin, 58 - long fin, Eldo - simple fin with swoopy rear quarter).

I dunno what the one on the far left with the Landau bars is.

Then a Volvo P1800 wagon back, a Porsche Targa, a trio of Benzes (the expensive hand built ones) and a Roller.

Cool Superman pic (I assume from 1978), maybe near a high end used car lot or shop?

MB at far left is an early 50s probably 170S cabrio. 2nd MB from L is a 450 SLC, then a couple of W111 cabrios - light colored is a 280SE low grille, 2nd one next to the Rolls-Royce appears to be older, could be 220SE/250SE or maybe but probably not likely early 280SE.

At the time, the SLC was probably the most valuable of the lot. Today it's the 280SE.

The FB post associated with the picture relayed a story by Alison - she encountered an actor in LA recently who did not know who Marlon Brando or Christopher Reeve was, nor had seen either The Godfather or the original Superman.

I get that a lot talking to younger people about 80s/90s movies. Some never seen BTTF, early Indiana Jones, etc, not to mention some John Hughes material or more obscure titles.

In a similar vein, there is a booming growth industry on YouTube for "reaction videos" to '70s/'80s radio hits by people of a later generation who supposedly have never heard the songs before. My suspicious nature means that I am taking them as largely made-up but they do good play-acting selling the idea that this was all new to them.

Yes I'm surprised at the lack of knowledge or interest of old films that the millennial generation show about any music or films from before they were born

Yet they will watch Friends which is on repeat showings from years ago as if it was all new

I did once talk with a colleague while driving her from work who was in her twenties and my CD player came on with Ella Fitzgerald doing the classics and she literally couldn't believe how good it sounded

I said it was older even than I was and she hadn't heard anything like it before - she borrowed and copied the disc...

    ps
indeed the Herald and Mk 2 Cortina were the adjoining cars

It is astounding to hear the music made decades ago as compared to the dreck that is made now. Rick Beato on YT can be a bit of a load to listen to at times if you do not understand the technical aspects of songwriting, but he makes some really good content on the complexity of music from the past as compared to simplistic modern stuff.

One of my favorite things is to listen to Ella, Ellington, Basie and Oscar Peterson on YT. If you want to see true brilliance look up the video of Dick Cavett with Oscar demonstrating the style of other players. The man was an incredible talent.

This one with Karen Carpenter and Ella Fitzgerald on the Carpenters' TV show Music, Music, Music still brings me chills at the voices. Karen looks gaunt in the video--I guess that was the early stages of her physical/psychological problems with food. I wish we could have listened to her voice as she aged into the maturity of the great voices like Fitzgerald.

I remember when the original TV show was on.

I would have though their older Xer or younger boomer parents would have indoctrinated them into 70s/80s pop culture, but in many cases, maybe not. Or maybe they thought it was so lame they stayed away. I think elder millennials are big into the 80s/90s car movement though, so there must be a subset.

My parents listened to oldies a lot when I was a kid, combine that with cable TV being a babysitter and every weekend being family movie viewing time, and I got to see and hear a a bit of material from the 50s-80s.

Yes indeed. They called that fastback style the Fleetline as opposed to the one with a rump, which was a Styleline. Haven't a clue how they got either name.
