    The place on the left appears to have some construction, but yeah, that's Aberdeen - probably a good representative for much of working class smaller town America. Many have less time and resources for maintenance.

    Nice looking 59 Pontiac. The houses and pavement look badly worse for wear.

    In the old pic we can’t see that section of broken sidewalk and in the current pic we can’t see much of the street surface. The two houses and their grounds don’t look much different.

    I think many parts of Aberdeen are still on the original ~1920s pavement. I'd wager a lot the surface in 1966 is the same as today.

    I believe that is a Facel Vega FVS model from the late 1950s. There were several interations of the FV, some with fishbowl windshields like this one, some with rear fins, even some 4-doors. There was also a mostly unsuccessful attempt to build a smaller version called the Facella with a 4-banger engine but only a handful were sold.

    The last version of the large FV with a non-fishbowl windshield, no fins on the back, and the big-block Chrysler V8 backed by a TorqueFlite was a really attractive car.

    I can't recall the name of the other French automaker of that era (a contemporay of FV) that built luxury four doors using American V8 power. Anyone?

    About 10-20 years later. Monteverdi of Switzerland had a range of Mopar powered luxury cars, including a couple four door cars. One was pretty striking:

    The other did a good job of classing up an Aspenlare:

    In the May Thoroughbred and Classic Cars there's a good article about Monteverdi.

    Hey, who put that rock out there?!?

    This one's a bit early for me, late 1950s, but it's something I've never seen before. I also very much like the log buffet table.

    Haystack Rock, Pacific City, OR. Pic expands for a better view.

    Far right middle up pic, I'll take a Nash 1951 for 500. LOL
    Hard to ID it exactly.

    And at the far left in white/black/green a Nash Rambler 1957?

    I don't see no stinkin' Edsel. B)

    I imagine it is not very much fun to drive, but the mint green early-'50s Plymouth wagon would be considered a very sensible car back then.

    What's the white wagon behind the Ford?
    @ab348 - are you referring to the wagon behind the Ford? Looks white on my screen, and I can't find a pic of an early '50s Plymouth wagon that matches.

    Believe you’re confusing the white 58 Ford Fairlane , far right, for an Edsel.

    The smallish light colored wagon parked near a rock is a Borgward Isabella Kombi.

    Perhaps so. It was Oregon after all so someone there might have been crazy enough to buy one. The nuts always roll towards the left coast, etc. :D Clearly they copied the Plymouth styling.

    Yup, the white wagon looks like an Isabella to me. I once rode in a sedan.

    The white sedan on far right is definitely a '58 Ford. Edsels had thinner tailights.

    Sorry I haven't been posting much lately but I thought I would've you a view from old blighty..

    This is Leicester in about1956 and I think it might be the other side of the more famous car park which at this time was the undiscovered resting place for King Richard III

    Should expand a bit

  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
    Photos like that remind me how little I know about the 'bread and butter' British cars from the '50s. So few of them came to the US.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
    I am surprised at the lack of prewar cars in Leicester, as they seem to pop up in other 50s British street scenes.

    Morris Minor rightmost in front row, leftmost in front row Austin A70, Daimler Conquest beside that.

    @texases
    Most of our post WW2 was were either reheated pre-war models and the rest tended to resemble Jelly Moulds. (ie Austin A40 Somerset which is all curves like a Nash but smaller.

    The nearest car in the foreground (LBC 253) is a Somerset and we had loads of those and even sold a number in North America

    @fintail
    The car to the right of the Daimler Conquest is a pre-war Morris - probably a Morris 14 hp

  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,285
    Is ERC 241 a Riley? Or perhaps a Wolseley?

    I think I see a few semi-obscured Morris Minors there.

    @ab348

    Hi ab
    The car registered ERC 341 is a Daimler Conquest and was registered in 1953/54

    Daimler called it the Conquest because it was sold in the UK for £1066 (before tax)

    1066 was the date of the Norman Conquest and is one of the few dates anyone in this country ever remembers from history class !

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
    There are a couple of interesting vehicles in this scene

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
    There were a number of companies who made estate cars from vans and onee of these traded under the name Utilicon

    I think they were based in the Coventry area which is near Leicester.

    The first small picture above is a Utilcon wagon probably based on a Commercial chassis

    The second one is a Utilicon based on a Ford Chassis
    in the second picture you canals see a Daimler Regency which was the larger predecessor of the Conquest. It's the car to the right of the "Dinky toy " van

    The Dinky (and Matchbox Van being the Bedford CA? The car to the right with the divided grille might be prewar? Or at least of that style, that boxier look, and the headlight isn't integrated into the front fender:

    I am kind of surprised, with the size of that city. Maybe a regional thing. Even in small town (~10K population at the time) PNW when I was a kid in the 80s, there was plenty of oddball stuff around, both old and new. I recall seeing fintails and knew the owner of a 105E Anglia, and at the same time admiring new W126s and E23s, seeing my first Ferrari, etc. Then we moved to a larger (but still under 20K population) town and there were even a couple of Rolls-Royces around.

    to the left blue with white top sedan looks like a Rambler to me.

    and the 64ish Mopar in the center looks so modern compared to the late 50's Caddy and Imperial it is parked between. Like an entire generation newer, not just a few years.

    Car to the right of the walkway, white, looks like a 62 Dodge, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World style.

    The white Mopar next to the ‘50s Caddy is a ‘65 full-size Plymouth.
