Looks like a Triumph TR7, from mid 80s. I think that's the name for them.

First thing that popped into my mind was a Triumph TR-7, but I have a feeling that's not it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say a Saab Sonnet? I'd have no idea on the year though. 1961?
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Early Saab 93? I think the Sonnet was a sporty low slung coupe no?

    You're close but no cigar, Boomchek. It's a '60 SAAB 96, a later model that featured a 4-stroke Ford V4 , rather than the
2-stroke DKW-derived engine used in earlier SAABs.

The Saab is a 96, but it would appear to be one of the early ones (1960-67), which retained the two-stroke engine.. When they introduced the V4 1498cc Ford Taunus engine, in 1967, they kept the name 96, although originally it was to have been called the 98, but the appearance changed, as the new engine was larger. Instead of the bonnet you see her, there was a larger grille, of mesh, on each side of the little shield shaped one, and the bonnet was seperate from the front panel, so the grille stayed in place when the lid was lifted.

I'll take a shot at it and guess:

    1972 Lincoln Continental stretch.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
    Pretty close, it's a '73 ;)

IMO, those old Contis are a lot classier limos than the Town cars they use now for stretches.

    Mercury Bobcat. 1975?

I think the Pintos had a different grille.

Nope, not a Bobcat. Those had a more upright grille, like this>

The car in #8559 is a '74 Pinto.

Not sure what it is. Looks like a Mazda 3 with a new VW Rabbit front (at least from that view) glued on.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
I saw one of those today...

Can't remember what it was though. I think it was either a Suzuki or a Kia.

Ahh just looked it up. Suziki Reno.

Not a bad looking car actually.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,498
I believe it's actually a late 60s Mazda, certainly the same BMW-Giugiaro styling.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
Mazda Luce, probably the 1500, so 1966-72, but it might be the 1800, which started in 1968.
I've always thought this was the best looking Japanese saloon of it's era.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
You got Magnette. There were many incarnations of the Mazda Luce, I believe this was the first.

I watched a British mystery series show last night (7JAN07) and wonder what this car might be. I don't know the name of the show-two English detectives (Smith and Jones???). They drove a black sedan with a Pontiac-inspired grille-chrome middle section and two "nostrils'. It almost appeared to have a V shaped emblem in the nose. Sorry for the sketchy details; could it be a Vauxhall?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,498
Hmmm...if you could recall the name, we could check over on imcdb too. Could you find an old TV listing?

The V thing makes me want to say Vauxhall.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,498
Yep, which sure had some 55-56 Pontiac genes.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
Green Vauxhall is a Magnum, 1973/4, either an 1800 or a 2300. It was basically the large engined version of the Viva HC and also took over as a 2-door coupe from the Firenza - although there was a special version with an aerodynamic "droop-snoot" nose that was still known as the Firenza. They were sold, although not continuously, until 1977. The 2300 was actually quite a decent car, but they were never strong sellers.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
Was the show Dalziel and Jones/Smith (it is something like that)- ? I think they run round in a Vauxhall Omega.
Only other Vauxhall type detectives I can think of were back in the early 70's, - Randall & Hopkirk, but the full title was R & H deceased, so it was about one of them being a ghost. They had a Ventora or a Victor Fd 2000 - can't remember which.

I found a picture of the Omega-is that a Cadillac Catera hiding in there? Sadly, it isn't the car in question. I came across the TV show and left it on because my wife likes everything British. It was a two-hour long mystery; I got the impression that it was a series like Poirot or some such.An older detective and his younger cohort were the main characters. As I said earlier I first thought of an Infiniti M from the side but it was a little lighter and had that Pontiac-ish front end. Vauxhall came to mind because of the triangular emblem on the nose-V- but... I guess that I have created a mystery here. Sorry.
  • tprjimtprjim Member Posts: 16
Hooray!!!!!!!! It was (is) a series called Midsomer Murders and it was a 2004 episode called Things That Go Bump In The Night! A clue at least. I have contacted a fan site and hope to get more information. I apologize for not thinking to proceed in this manner originally and causing anyone any unnecessary effort. I'll post if I get more Information.
