    It's a 1960 Mercury.

Montclair? Monterey? Does the reverse C pillar make it a Phaeton name that they had used earlier?

EDIT: Park Layne, four-door hardtop Cruiser.

Yep, that's a 1960 Park Lane, the lower body trim and fender skirts are the giveaway. IIRC the same roofline was used on all H/T sedan models in '59 & '60, we had a '59 Monterey, it had the best outward visibility of any tintop I've ever driven.

Pillared sedans had a different, more enclosed, roofline>

    Citroen AX late 80s
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
As the decals say, it is an AX Sport, but the wheels are wrong, I believe, as this car generally came with alloys. The side decals were as shown for the AX Sport when it was launched in 1987, but they had a double coachline along the side above the lettering, which isn't on this one.. A year later, they changed the decals so they were lower, below the crease in the door, so it is probably an early one. Ax Sport had 1294cc 4 cylinder engine, but it weighed virtually nothing, so it was quite nippy.
A colleague of mine had a later AX and did over 90000 miles on the original rear tyres, which still had loads of tread when he sold the car - the fronts, like on most front wheel drive cars, didn't last anything like as long.

Those are the performance coupe versions of theMoPar OmniRizon twins. The Dodge version was called a Shelby Charger, the Plymouth was simply the TC3 IIRC.

close... you got one - The Shelby Charger (Maroon / Silver)... they are both Dodge's and both Shelby's. The black one was limited, numbered, and only available in Black.

Guess your monitor doesn't show the MG Octagon in the grille. it's an MG Metro.

AFAIK you're correct on the Alto.

Great scene from a great movie - It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World

The wagon is maybe a 63 Plymouth? The Imperial is a 62, and the VW is the same era ca. 1960
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Pretty good Fin. You're off by a year on the Plymouth, it's a
1962 Suburban Sport. It's almost impossiblt to tell the year on VW Bugs, that seems to have amber turn signals on the fenders which came in around '59 or '60 IIRC.

You've nailed the movie and the Imperial.

I thought it was a MG octagon, but I get confused with Rover and MG, and thought MG only made those roadsters.

It's a 57 Chevy, I guess a 150. Certainly cooler than any new patrol car!

Actually there were a significant number of MG sedans and hatchbacks including the one Magnette gets his username from:

    1957 MG Magnette Saloon>
    image

There were prewar MG roadsters that carried the Magnette name as well. Confused yet?

That is the new Tesla roadster, I believe. Based on a Lotus Elise platform, with slightly different bodywork, and powered by an electric motor.

Looks like it says 'Valiant' on the hood, which was Chrysler's entry brand in Australia for a while. No idea on the model, though.

    1965 Chrysler Barracuda?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
    You're a little off on the year Steve, it's a '68 'Cuda.

The picture is from South Africa so apparently the car marketed under the name Chrysler Valiant Barracuda. I don't know if it was made locally or imported from Australia or the US.

It's a Clan Crusader from the mid-1960's, one of 200 or so made

It's not surprising you'd think it was VW-based but it's based on another rear-engined car, the ill-concieved and poorly executed Hillman/Riley Imp ("the car that doomed Rootes Group")>

But the Imp was such a stunner. I'm amazed it failed.

    (how's THAT for sarcasm?)

But the Imp was such a stunner. I'm amazed it failed.

LOL, there was a plethora of rear-engined small cars in the 50s and 60s most of them rather odd looking to American eyes. It could be argued that the Imp was good-looking compared to this>

    ..or this>

actually, while the two you posted are no Aston Martin DB9's, they (to my eyes) still look better than the Imp. I always found the back half of the green house on those Imps to be just so oddly shaped compared to the rest of the car (which isn't anything pretty to begin with).

I like the goggo in a twisted way
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,046
looks to me like it's trying to ape the first-gen Corvair just a bit with the front-end. Actually, if you chopped that oversized roof off, it doesn't look like it would make a bad looking convertible. As it stands though, I think those other two cars look better, if nothing else because they're cuter. That Imp has kind of a devious, naughty look to its face, as if it's up to something, well, Impish! :)
  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
Is it just my imagination, or does that Imp go down at the rear? Can't imagine how high the front would be with a couple of people in the car...
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,046
Is it just my imagination, or does that Imp go down at the rear?

I think it might just be a visual trick that makes that Imp look low in the back. The ground might be a bit uneven, but also the lower part of that crease looks like it dips down slightly as it moves toward the rear.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
The Imp is one of a long line of cars to imiatate Corvair design including every BMW built since 1965 or so.
For a cr that was a minor seller, the 'Vair had an outsized influence on styling.

Actually I have a soft spot for the ugly/cute minicars of the era and certainly the Goggomobil has a certain appeal. The Skoda OTOH was butt ugly.

VW 411 is what I think it was called here in the US. The pix looks like Mexico or some South American country, so it probably had a different name there.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,514
Some kinda Brazil model, I am pretty sure that pic is in Rio
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
You guys are on the right track, it is a Volkswagen do Brasil model (not sold outside of South America AFAIK) and it is based on the 411/412 family IIRC.

    It has a shorter wheelbase.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that it's a mid 1970s Volkswagen Brasilia.

    2001 BMW 330ci/E46, 2008 BMW 335i conv/E93

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Brasilia indeed. I probably rode in about 100 of those cars as taxis.

The long wheelbase version was called the Variant.

The beach is Copacabana, in Rio de Janeiro, I recognize that characteristic sidewalk. Such a beautiful place - gorgeous beaches, women, lakes, hills, man-made statues and bridges, the works.

You *must* go there at least once in your life time, or you simply have not lived.
