The one in the picture is an AE86. Here's the FWD successor (AE92):

    Matra Murena?

Yup, the Matra-Simca Murena is not to be confused with an earlier Murena from a different outfit>

A block of wood is a block of wood and a shoebox is a shoebox. That's all I see when I look at 80s cars....oh, there's the Lotus/Subaru cheese wedge".

Has anyone posted one of these yet?

    It's '68.

Yenko Stinger. Start with a Corvair Corsa, boost the turbo to somewhere north of 200hp, upgrade the drivetrain, then go have fun in the twisties until the engine flies apart.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Bingo! They only made a couple hundred of them. The American Porsche that never happened. Woe be to all who fail to read the boost gauge.

I'm guessing some sort of Lancia, but I can't put my finger on the model name ... Aurelia?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Nope not a Lancia, it does resemble the Aurelia Spider though, probably because they both had Pininfarina styling.

Unless, of course, I'm completely off..

    EDIT: Wait.. back seat?? :surprise:

Yer right, Suzanne Somers was the nameless Mystery Blonde who drove the White '56 T-Bird in American Graffiti

She had fun, fun, fun 'til her Daddy took the T-Bird away!

The 50s Chevy I love to hate.

Some wise man once said it takes two people to design a car. One to start drawing it, and another standing behind him with a baseball bat to tell him when to stop.

58 chevy (impala?), definitely a "one-year only" design for Chevy with no continuity whatsoever to prior or future years. Odd duck in that way. I think it also had a one year only engine or did the 348 truck engine continue on another year or two?

    1958--the year Detroit went mad.

Back in those days didn't GM do that every year?

The 348 stuck around through 1961.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
I hate the 58s too, but you missed the point of the post, which actor drove it in American Graffiti, extra points if you can remember the character's name, and the name of the guy in the still.

Sorry Boomchek, Edmunds sez that's a '96, the Dakota was redesigned for '97). B Rover's white convertible is probably around that time as well. I'm only slighly familiar with the Shelby variant (ca. 91) shown in #9080.

Not really a mystery pic but a mystery engine.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
    I'm going to guess that's a Viper V10 they're trying to shoe horn into a '69ish Mustang.

I think it'd be cool if someone could fit that V10 into a Plymouth Prowler.

No that looks like an overhead cam engine.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Yup and it is a V8 DOHC engine...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Well whatever it is, it's worth more than the entire car.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
DOHC engines tend to be a lot bigger outside than OHV engines.

We tend to refer to internal displacement, and often disregard the external size and weight of a powertrain, which are really what matters.

Here are Ford's 4.9l OHV engine and 4.6l DOHC engine next to each other, guess which is bigger?
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Well that makes sense there are four times as many cams and four times as many valves in the DOHC motor then the OHV engine.

I will let a few more people guess on the mystery engine before I post the article I saw it on.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,050
IIRC, Ford's 4.6 OHC engine is actually larger physically than the 460 big-block! Engines like the Ford smallblock and Chevy smallblock are actually relatively tiny things, even compared to contemporary engines like a Mopar 318, Olds 307, Pontiac 350, etc.

4 times as many valves? Have they started making 64-valve V-8's now? ;)
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Bah you know what I meant...

    Twice as many valves...

They do make a fair amount of Five valve V8s though. Ford made a Five valve V8 back in the mid 90s for a concept hot rod SUV.

Can't remember the name of it though.

Now this is a Hybrid... 1970s mustang with Sherman tank power

    From the article...

    image

Just thought I'd share some before and after pictures of my Ford GAA tank engine. All aluminum 1100 cubic inch V8 used in WWII Sherman Tanks. These were gas burners rated at 500 HP and 1050 Ft. Lbs. of torque for military service, but are capable of much much more using mostly stock parts.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
    That's John Lennon's Phantom V
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I think British soldiers used to call the Sherman tanks "Ronsons", for rather grim and obvious reasons.

Gallows humor, to say the least. For those too young to know, "Ronson" was a popular cigarette lighter that would burst into flame at the flick of a finger.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
That was more because of the rather thing and rather light armor fitted to the Sherman compared to their german counterparts correct?
