Well I think it was due more to the fact that the Sherman used a gas engine and the German and Russian tanks had diesel--a fuel much less prone to ignition from gunfire. Same with power boats, you know---nobody wants a gas engine power boat anymore.

Ah, the Mark IV Supra. It and the GT-R are still the legends among legends of Japanese supercars.

"Well I think it was due more to the fact that the Sherman used a gas engine and the German and Russian tanks had diesel--a fuel much less prone to ignition from gunfire."

Actually, for most of the war the Panzer tanks were all gasoline, 23L displacement comes to mind. But they had WAY more armor, especially in the front.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Oh you're right...they used Maybach engines, 12 cylinder. I guess it was the Russian tanks that were diesel.

I read somewhere recently that the Israelis captured a German panzer still being used by Syria in the war of 1967!

The wagon on the far leftis a Camryt wagon late 80s. Actually same as the one on Craigslist in the Project Cars forum right now.

The one over from the Camry is a Ford Tempo mid 80s vintage.

Don't know the middle convertible car.

The one to the right of the convertible is a Chevrolet Chevette.

The very left is a second gen Jetta, most likely 86-90.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
Yep, the Camry is a ca. 1988-89 (most wagons seem to be those years), the Tempo is an 86-87. the convertible is a 67 Plymouth GTX, then a Chevette from the early 80s, then the Jetta, which I believe came to NA in 85 (I can't see if it has a 3rd rear light)

have their ammunition stored in a vulnerable location, which made them more succeptible to exploding if a shell penetrated their armor?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I think once a shell penetrated the armor, that was trouble enough. This is why I was a proud member of the 352nd Fighting Typewriters in the army....I did drive a tank once though but of course it was a lot more modern than a Sherman. It's fun, I highly recommend getting one.

Ohhhh...the pieces of junk Fiat marketed under the Lancia name! I forget what they were called though.....a tragic end to a once distinguished marque...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
    Lancia Scorpion, I think
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
The Lancis Stratos was an awesome car...anybody find a photo of one?
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
Oh I loveeeee the Stratos. Especially love the look when it is all opened up. One hell of a car. I'll see if I can't find a few decent pics.

This car won a lot of races and is worth a bundle of money these days.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yup, it's the Lancia Beta Scorpion, sold in other markets as the Lancia Beta Monte Carlo.

The Scorpion/MC was essentially a coupe version of the X 1/9
with the DOHC Fiat 124 Sport motor (1800 or 2000 cc). Fiat had orinally planned to sell it under that brand.

Basically that car ruined Lancia's reputation in America forever....thank heavens they didn't call it an Alfa Romeo! Of course, we got the Milano to ruin Alfa's reputation in America.

It's all so sad...excuse me if I get emotional here....sob...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yep, in 1986 I remember Acura took #1 in JD Powers while the Milano was dead last.

The worst part was the complexity to fix things, the brakes used air craft parts that were expensive.

What was the Lancia hatchback from the mid-late '70s.. I always thought that was the Beta? It was an Accord/Scirocco sized car..

You're thinking of the Lancia Beta HPE>
    image

The FWD Lancia Betas were sold as Hatchback (HPE), coupe and Spider (a targa-style set-up). I don't know why Lancia's marketing guys used the same name for the rear-engined, RWD Scorpion/Monte Carlo. :confuse:

The shoulda called it the Lancia Chi. ;)

It is so, so hard to make a minicar not look dorky, though. Cut 'em some slack.

  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,053
Yeah, the problem with minicars is that you can either have them look well-proportioned, or you can make them usable. Usually, you can't have both:

Cool pic Andre! It's amazing how accurate that they made those toy cars look like the real thing! If fact, I don't think I've ever seen one like that.

Also, I like the International Harvester truck! A 1957??

I love that mini - Desoto!

I want one.... but you and ateixeira are right - I'd rather be driving that Zagato concept car.

    Mazda1?

Nope, Mazda2! The US is supposed to get the next gen Mazda2 in 2008, it will be shown @ Geneva next month.

Good Lord, that thing looks like the illegitimate spawn of a Packard, Checker, and Lincoln!

As for the decade, normally I'd guess 50's, around 1956, but if that's some Eastern Bloc car, hell, sometimes they were so far behind the times style-wise that it could be some 2010 concept car! :P
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
Looks like a GAZ Chaika...the commie top brass liked Packards. And indeed, I think these things were in production til ca. 1980. Production started ca. 1958 I think...I don't know if anything changed during that span.
  • lokkilokki Member Posts: 1,200
    Fintail gets the prize

I personally kind of like the Packard/Lincoln lovechild look.

Tail looks like a 240Z to me and the wheels look like cheap American off-the-shelf stuff. Plates are foreign but I don't know what country.

My first guess is a 240Z with an American V-8 stuffed in it?
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
well you're right about the American V8 under the hood, but that's where the trail goes cold.

To narrow it down, it isn't Japanese.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Is it a Monteverdi from Switzerland?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
That looks like a Jensen badge on the hood. Is it a variant of the 1970s Jensen Interceptor or FF, those normally had four exposed headlights?

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
    French plates anyway

I see the Montverdi influence too
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
    Andy's was pretty darn close.

It is a Jensen Nova. Basically an Interceptor that was rebodied by Vignale. I have to say I prefer its styling to the regular Interceptor.

There was a nice article on it in the February issue of "Classic & Sports Car" (UK)
