It only seems that way but there's really a lot we haven't covered, like this little gem>

    image

It is, BTW, a series-produced, post WWII automobile.

Chew on that one for a bit. :P

I think quite a few retired members of the east German secret police now work at my local BMW dealers service department...oh maybe it just seems that way.....

LOL! For some reason I'm picturing old 3 series being tortured to tell the mechanics what is wrong with it.

Why do you say that shifty ?

    Looks like Starsky and Hutch's grand-paps car. Looks like a mid 50's ( 56-57 ) Nash/Rambler. :confuse:

Yep that's a 1949 EMW 340, unlike the '54 EMW 327/3 I saw at the Russo & Steele Auction, this one wears the blau mit weiss propeller rather than the red/white emblem EMW was forced to employ after BMW took the Eisenacher boys to court for copying their designs and logos. Oddly, logo or not the 327/2 & 3 looked more like a real Bimmer because they kept the classic grille>

I find the story of the East German postwar auto industry fascinating because of the intricacies and oddities involved.

Yup - 1957 Nash Ambassador Custom Country Club

After all the foreign cars, I was hoping to throw a false scent with "dat American Style" ... but it didn't slow you guys down much...

GEEZ....Ford made some ugly cars 1958-62!
What a chaotic mess. We got lines going UP, lines going DOWN, lines going every which way. It's like the equivalent of someone designing a webpage using 12 different fonts.

    1958 Ford Fairlane 500.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,055
is one of the few cars that actually looked BETTER than its 1957 counterpart! Now the rear skirts really make the thing look awful, and I never did care for the taillights, which looked kinda like a sideways colon (the punctuation mark, not the body part). But it's just that I never liked the jutted-out bug-eyed style on a car, and the 1957 Ford carried that look to an extreme. So IMO, the '58 is an improvement, if just for the more toned-down quads!

Well, the spear down the side of that '58 has kind of a random, thrown-on-at last minute look, too.

    1958 Ford Fairlane 500.

    TMart gets it right.

Andre, I think the fender skirts improve the looks of the car
but then again I am a child of the '50s. ;)

Ferrari 308 GT ? I don't know but it looks like Magnum P.I.'s car. ;)

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Yep, to be exact it's a 308GTB/qv, Magnum PI's car was a 308GTS with the removable Targa top in place of the fixed roof on the Berlinetta shown.

I always liked that hood scoop on the 58 Fords...even when I was 10 I knew it was fake.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Looks like something you could outrun on a bicycle.

Lots of eastern bloc flair in that one.

    cool...

  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
All I remember as a kid was that if you owned a '57 Ford you were way cool but if you owned a '58 we all laughed at you. It was definitely an un-cool car, considering as something one's parents would drive (the worst curse one could hurl at a car in those days). We did think the supercharged T-Birds were pretty hot though. I think the entire Elvis/Teenager/Drive-In culture just glossed over 1958 like it didn't happen.....except of course if it was a Corvette...then you were like GOD.

To me your comparison to a sideways colon infers two tail lights. Actually the 500 had three. IIRC, the Customline is the model with two, plus an even more strange side molding.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Looks like a 70's era Holden .. some sort of a ute-based van.

    Groovy!
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,055
Were backup lights still optional on cars like the Ford in 1958? Here's a 1958 Fairlane 4-door hardtop, and it appears to be lacking backup lights.

The station wagon model looks like it has some little backup lights stuck on as an afterthought, in between the "colon".

I think the lower-line Fairlane is nicer looking than the 500. It just seems so much cleaner without that awful piece of gold trim slapped on the side.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,696
Backup lights were flat and between the two taillights

I think they were still optional. I swear I have seen 60 Fords without them.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Yeah it's a Holden...I don't know the model name, but I had a Matchbox car of the Ute version.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
I had no bckup lights on either my '65 VW Bug or my '66 TR-4A, I was mighty pleased to get them on my third car a 71 Fiat 124 Spider.

It's amazing how primitive cars once were. :P

Gotta be DDR with that name, maybe a Wartburg ancestor
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Yeah, it is a Wartburg ancestor. it's a 1959 IFA Sachsenring P40, made in the old Horch factory in Zwickau DDR. IFA was later the maker of Wartburgs and Trabants.

Our gaudily-decorated ride is a Holden Sandman, which acquired a reputation in the late '70s as a popular venue for amorous activity (a shaggin' wagon, as Wikipedia puts it).
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Now there's a legacy to be proud of.

In 1959 the BRD was starting to produce advanced fintails...and the DDR was making that car. I wonder which was better. Did it have a 2 stroke engine or anything like that?

Fintail's right about the Poncho, it's almost impossible to tell the exact year from that photo but it's somewhere between '49 and 1952, Is that close enough for gummint work?

Oh I know that one...I almost bought one!

    A Berkeley! Powered by a motorcycle engine....Enfield 750cc?

Neat little car actually but WAY SMALL....that photos doesn't really capture its tiny-ness.
