That "Ute" style was and still is popular in Australia, so over there it probably pre-dates the '57 Ranchero.

Ford's Australian arm invented the "ute" back in the 1930s, and there it occupied the segment that was filled by pickup trucks here.

Is the car in the foreground a Triumph Herald? Must have been an odd sight then. Looks like a 61 Ford wagon beside it, and I am not completely sure about the car in the driveway...I want to say it is a 63 Plymouth or Dodge

The Herald, like a lot of oddball foreign cars might not have been an everyday sight in the early 60s but they weren't all that rare either. After all, first generation of Compact "import fighters" was launched by the Big 3 in 1960 to counter growing sales of cars like the Volkswagen Bug and Renault Dauphine. The sheer variety of different imports of various sizes and mechanical layouts available in the early-mid 1960's has never been matched before or since. I think of it as a Golden Age.

The MoPar is a '63 Plymouth Fury. I can't make out whether the Ford Wagon is a '61 or '62.

Kia vanlet of some sort. Last-generation Kia Rondo, maybe?

Blue oval and labels says it's a Ford MiniWagon?

No clue on that last one. Some chinese knock off?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,419
Too bad the early 60s were 30 years before I reached driving age. Coming of age when most kids were driving malaise era junk was no fun.

I am pretty sure the Ford is a 61. it has small ornaments on the tops of the fenders, I don't think a 62 had these.

    Doh!

I have always used the side trim as the way to distinguish 61 from 62, along with lack of fins, if one is unable to view the grille.

    Maserati A6 - Pininfarina - late 40's
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
The first one is a Kia, but it's a Joice, which I wasn't familiar with, as it was never sold in UK - turns out there are a few in Germany though, where I saw this one, so it would seem it was sold there and probably elsewhere in LHD Europe. Here's the back ( the grey ghost is a pigeon)image

I'm not familiar with the Rondo, but I think that was sold here as a Karens, which is a bit bigger.

Second one is indeed a Ford - it's badged as a Festiva Miniwagon, and would appear to be a JDM version - this one was never sold in UK either and I've only ever seen this one here which I presume was a grey import..

Third one was sold here - it's a Daihatsu Grand Move - the facelifted 1998 version.

The front of the bright green ute looks like a Datsun 1200 (the name that model carried in the US as a step below our B210). I assume it was called 'Cherry' elsewhere? :confuse:

It looks really tasty with that bed & the Panasports. I'd buy one! :D

    And, for 10 extra points.....
Ward Cleaver and Fred Rutherford had the same license plate on their cars! What was it?
  • lostwrenchlostwrench Member Posts: 288
It's a 62 Ford Galaxie 500/XL. The emblem behind the front wheel has two checker flags with "405" between them. This car had 405 horsepower!
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,676
The 1962 does not have Galaxy
written on the side of the headlight fairing. In 1961 they did IF they had the little ornament on top of the fender. The station wagon in the picture has something written on the side of the headlight so that indicates it's a 61.

I don't recall seeing a Ford in that pink color of the 62 in this picture. Mary Kay?

Whoa, down boy... That particular car is a 390 rated at 300HP in A/T form. There was no "405" fender flash, the badge actually read "406" even though the actual displacement was 405.1 and the rated Horsepower was indeed 405 for engines equipped with three 2 barrel carbs, the more common 4v versions were rated at 385hp. HP ratings published by mfr's in those days tended to be rather generous.

One more thing, the crossed checkered flags were used on Chevy's engine badges but Ford used a Thunderbird motif for their performance engines except on Falcons and Mustangs.

Here's the ad stating that the car is a 390, painted in factory Sand Shell Beige. :shades:

    Isn't that a Nissan Bakkie?
  • lostwrenchlostwrench Member Posts: 288
You are correct. It is a 390. The picture I have of the side of a 62 is small and I read the number on the eagle between the two checkered flags as 405 rather than 406.
I am well familiar with the crossed checkered flags used by Chevy. The checkered flags on the 62 Galaxie are on each side of the eagle's head with the "390", or "406" on the eagle.
I enjoy all of your posted pictures. Good work.

They probably gave some exotic name to that color, like "bleached salmon" or something. :P Well, okay, "Sand Shell Beige" does sound a bit more marketable!

IIRC, the car that we got as the B210 was the Sunny back home, and that lineage eventually became the Sentra here.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Here, the 1200 size car was the Sunny, and the Cherry was smaller, more like a MIni/Fiesta at first, although subsequent generations were a bit bigger.

TVR was incredibly prolific producing many different models during the 70's thru the early 00's. I can't keep them straight. :confuse:

    WAG- TVR Tasmin?

Pretty sure that's a Gen IV VW Golf behind it.

    The TVR is a Tasmin...I'm going to guess it's a 280i (Ford 2.8L V6) as opposed to a 350i (Rover 3.5L V8).

Let's see...the cab is a 64 Dodge....or 65?... no, 64...love the 57 Bel Air four door...nice to see a Karmann Ghia convertible...there's a 66 or 67 red Galaxie behind it for you Galaxie fans....427 R code?? Nah......Dodge "medium" duty truck..love those pie plate headlights...alright I'm done...carry on andre, magnette and the rest of you brainiacs...I'm definitely not in your league
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,419
The 66 Ford looks to have a cloth or vinyl top, maybe an LTD or a convertible?

There's a 64 Chevy wagon in front of the 57, and something old and Mopar looking directly behind the person behind the cab. The big truck in the background look like a Dodge.

I want to say I know what that is in front of the Ghia, but I just can't pin it down.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Yes, it's a Tasmin - 1985, actually, and I don't know if it's 2.8 or 3.5, although I think Hudson is probably right that it's the former, at that date.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
The best one of the lot is the Mazda Bongo Frendee.... First time I saw one of those ( they've started to turn up here as grey imports) I nearly drove off the road laughing..

The Chevy wagon is a '63 (not '64). The one in front of the KarmanGhia looks like a '67 Volvo 240, however the year may be off (not much to see). The one through the taxi window looks like a '51 Chrysler. Can't quite see the rest...

Correct on the '63 Chevy wagon and I believe you are right about that being a Volvo 240 in front of the VW K-G. The cab is a '64 Dodge. I can't see enough of the
behind the taxi except that I'm sure it's an early 50s MoPar. Just visible behind the right C-post of the taxi is what looks like a '58-'60 Thunderbird.

Dodge truck and '65 Ford Galaxie are all correct.
