Yep: It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up That Model A body makes it look like a pup It's got eight cylinders, uses them all It's got overdrive, just won't stall
With a 4-barrel carb and a dual exhaust With 4.11 gears you can really get lost It's got safety tubes, but I ain't scared The brakes are good, tires fair
By the way, what are "safety tubes" ? Inner tubes for the tires?
Yes, it's an HRG - I think this one was a 1500, but the 1100 was pretty much identical. THey only made about 150 in total, but so many of them seem to have survived - I think they always sold to enthusiasts, a bit like Morgans, so not many got scrapped.
This one was registered in London in late 46 early 47.
Is that a Reliant of some sorts. They only seem to make geeky 3 wheelers. Are those common in the UK?
On a side note: If you pull up in a Reliant to a party, or to pick up your hot date, does the car make you look nerdy, smart, or sophisticated? Or is it not that big of a curiosity in the UK? Have you ever driven one magnette?
Background: Yellow Triumph Spitfire Mk4 & Stag; MG TC, TD & one of those early 90's Rover V8 MGB thingies. There's a goldish MGBGT waaaay in back, a BRG TR7 or TR8 roadster next to a black TR2, and a 70's Orange Jensen Interceptor.
I would agree with most of your choices for the background, (and you have good eyeight and a good monitor) but the Jensen is, as fintail observed, a Jensen-Healey. However the yellow car next to the Spitfire is a Reliant Scimitar GTC - they made those as an alternative to the GTE in the early 80's.
As karsick says, it's a Bond, although by the time they made the Bug, Bond were part of Reliant anyway.
The Reliant was always sold mainly to old folks, and had a pretty nerdy reputation even when new - turning up on a date in one wouldn't have been a good start. One of the most popular comedy shows on TV here for years had a couple of blokes who were running round in a Reliant van - it was meant to be a funny touch, but has had the effect of popularising the older Reliants. I've travelled in one, and did drive it once around a car park - a fellow student used to have one back in the 70's- they were generally reliable, but fiddly to work on.
Thanks for the clarification. . They are odd looking cars. I don't think they'd ever be sold here as they woudn't pass safety standards, unless they'd be classified as some sort of a motorcycle thingie.
Yup, it is the trend-setting 3200CS, whose roofline was borrowed by the '65 Corvair (ironically most modern BMW's have a beltline borrowed from the '60-'64 ' Vairs).
Yep, it's a '78, IIRC they were all stepsides. There weren't many new performance/muscle cars around in '78 so speed junkies were attracted to this muscle Hemi-truck which could outrun contemporary Corvettes.
The article I took it from calls it a "L'il Red Express" but "L'il Red Wagon" is the name I recall too. Hubcap Cafe splits the difference and call s it both. :confuse:
I remember it as "Little Red Truck," actually. Pretty sure it made its debut as a '78 model. Could be different marketing in different parts of the US. It had a 360 4-barrel (not a Hemi, but as close as you could get in '78) and would keep up with the Chevy C-10 454, not to mention accelerating about as quickly as an L82 Corvette.
This is from an old postcard, if you look closely you can easily find a dozen identifiable cars, enough to approximate the year the picture was taken. Extra credit if you know where it was taken:
White car across the street is a 1961 Buick Special two-door hardtop Black and white car on other side of street is a 1957 Pontiac sedan
First Row: 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air or Biscayne, 1959 Plymouth, 1958 Oldsmobile, 1963 Ford Country Sedan, 1961 Plymouth. 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air or Biscayne.
Black car next to 1958 Chevy - possibly a 1962 Buick Wildcat
Back Row: 1959 Ford Galaxie, 1961-64 Chevrolet Corvair, 1960 Chevrolet Impala convertible, 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air or Biscayne, 1961 Ford Falcon, 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air or Biscayne. Can't see rest of row.
Not sure of blue and white car in second row, but it looks like it could be a low-end 1957 Dodge. Can't see the rest.
I'll take a wild guess as to where the picture was taken, but I think it's Wildwood, NJ a long time ago before the place became "America's Most Wanted" on the Boardwalk. I went there in 2004 with my girlfriend after hearing what a great place it was in 1976. Now, all I see is a bunch of thuggish characters on the beach.
Nice job Lemko, I can't argue with any of your choices. The newest car in this picture full of late model cars is the '62 Chevy (most likely a Biscayne--I can only see 4 tail lights) so it was almost certainly taken in 1962.
Notwithstanding the lack of palm trees I thought the location was Florida but it is indeed Wildwood Crest, New Jersey (Conca Dor Motel).
I'm surprised there's not a single imported car in the shot, by 1962 Volkswagens and Triumphs etc were becoming common sights on the East Coast.

I used to think that as well, but I think it's actually prehistoric-speak for roll-bars.
It's got a Singer engine, the make is 3 letters ( ie like BMW), and they were made 1939 , then 1945 to 1955.

I've seen HRG's running up Prescott hill climb, and in historic races and sprints - they are really a post war vintage style car.
This one should be easy - bonus points for the cars in the background ?
