Ah I used to have one of those. If it was a photo of a Camry I would have added 'but I forgot what it was"; however these cars are not forgettable, especially the hot rod version.

Indeed--the lovely and talented Alfa Romeo 164.

Egad, Shifty, I hope that shot is distorted by the lens!

Hmm, lessee. European sedan, suicide doors, wraparound rear glass, rounded contours, so probably a '50s design. Apparently RHD, which would normally point to the British Isles, but there are other possibilities.

Any chance this is a small Lancia?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,584
I think that's one of the Rover 85/95 family.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    fintail is closer....it's a Rover 80.

I see a similarity to Lancia but I think the Italians would have proportioned it better. British sedans suffered from fat butt for many years, until Jaguar finally figured out how to put a tolerable rear end on a sedan with the XJ6. Prior to that, I think the back end of British cars was something you used to hang things on, or stuff things into. :P

From top to bottom: VW Beetle, BMW 2002, Ford Escort, Ford Capri, Mustang II, 1978-79 Oldsmobile Cutlass, 1979 Ford LTD Crown Victoria, 1979 Mercury Marquis.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
VW Beetle, must be later US version with that huge, hideous bumper
    Early 80s BMW 320i
    Blue Ford Escort?
    Volvo 240
    Ford or Mercury something
    Oldsmobile or Buick Regal?
    Ford Crown Vic
    Another Ford

All looks like early 80s cars except the Beetle.

not much worth saving in that kabob!
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
Hard to tell from this angle, but I think the car you labeled a Cutlass is actually a '78-79 Grand Prix. They weren't too bad for the day--you could get one with a sport suspension, a four-barrel 301 and a four-speed manual. Too bad the 301 was such a boat anchor. . .

Only the Bimmer if it's in good shape.

Not with a big hole in the middle of it! :P

I meant prior to it being spiked by the Jolly Green Giant.

late 2002, not a 320. And it is a Merc Capri, not a Volvo.

' 76 BMW 2002 is a real porker....you'd have to do something with the car--hopefully that one was rusted beyond repair.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
No wonder I thought it was a 3 series, then. Didn't look as small as I recall those being.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,144
Yeah, seems like most of the 2002s I see for sale are the big-bumper ones. That plus carbs plus primitive pollution controls = not so much fun.

Not sure but I can tell you that the car in the background is a 97-01 Prelude with an aftermarket exhaust.

I don't know, but I sure like the view.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Hmmm....it's Italian for sure, not an Alfa, Lancia or Ferrari, and a 50s type dash. I have no idea what 50s Fiats look like---seems too rich for a Fiat though.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
I wondered if it might be a Siata 208S, but I doubt any of those were outfitted for the US market with a speedometer in mph.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
    Nice guess stephen987! It's the ex-Steve McQueen 1953 Siata 208S, and it's really a beaut>

That appears to be a '69 Pontiac Bondomobile--maybe a Tempest T37 with a GTO grille grafted on? Surely nobody has a real GTO in that condition these days!.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Driving along Canal Rd in Georgetown, DC. Really caught my eye, though it looked sort of bulky, heavy in person. Still attractive:

I've always liked the looks of the Aston Martin V8s. That one's a Volante convertible--no guess on the year, since they made them forever.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Google images said it was a 1985.

Took me a while to figure out what it was driving next to it. It towered over my Miata. We both had our tops down so I had a good look at it.

Didn't have time to snap a photo, so I Googled it.

Nice exhaust sound, though it was running rich. I smelled Amoco Ultimate, 93 octane. :D
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
A classic type of "GT" car---the gentleman's express, in British terms. Not a sports car, not a Chrysler Sebring :P
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
yes the rare Pontiac Bondo....you know, like the Ferrari Dino. It's a Tempest all right. I wonder what it would feel like to sit in it......yewwww........
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It felt like a Mustang GT in a tuxedo. A real nice tuxedo for the time, I'm sure.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yes but now. If the outside looks like that, then.....

I'm picturing dark brown carpeting with oil stains, ripped seats that leave little orange flecks on your clothes.

I wonder if they used a wind tunnel so it's actually more aerodynamic, or just for retro looks?
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Looks like they're trying to make a Superbird or Daytona replica out of a current Challenger. I've seen 'Cuda versions of the Challenger at the Carlisle Chrysler show.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,144
Doesn't work for me - big schnoz.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
I like it--but would prefer just the nose job without the wing.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,783
Huh. Considering its location and paintjob, I seriously thought for a moment you may have uncovered a behind-the-scenes shot from the making of Pixar's Cars (something used to render the CGI version of The King, perhaps). :P

Yup, it's a 1968 Pontiac Tempest gussied up with a GTO hood and emblem, which is on the wrong side BTW.

This is what a real '68 Goat looked like>

For some strange reason, I like it. I think it looks less awkward than the original did. The rest of the body doesn't clash as much with the beak on this one.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Is this the ugliest Detroiter of the entire 1960s?

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yes it is and if it drove as badly as our '59 Monterey, it drove as bad as it looks.
