    Yes, that's a 1967 Lamborghini Islero S, their best front-engine design IMO.

...but I spotted a car the other day that intrigued me. Vanity plate said "VIGNALE" and it looked to be of mid-60's vintage.

Before I spotted the plate, I suspected it was a Ferrari 2 door coupe. Very squarish looking, red with black top.

A quick search of VIGNALE on google didn't turn anything up that looked like what I saw.

    Any ideas?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
If it looked anything like this>

    image

You saw a very rare Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale or some other equally rare Vignale-bodied Ferrari from the early 1950s.

Vignale was one of the most prominent of the bespoke body-builders during the early-mid 1950s and did coachwork on a number of platforms for Ferrari, Maserati, Fiat Alfa and others. They faded in the 1960s as Pininfarina, Bertone and Giugiaro took over but not before leaving us the fabulous Maserati 3000GT Spider Vignale which I think is even better looking than the fabled Pininfarina Ferrari California>

Looked more like the bottom car than the top .... the top was up on the car I saw (or it was a hardtop - not entirely sure).

That's it! However, I now think that the car I saw was a convertible, since it didn't have the curved rear glass as on the picture above.

    Was a hardtop available?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
That's the steel-top version of the mid 60s Maserati 3500GT, it was bodied by Carrozzeria Touring, not Vignale. It was usual practice back then for different coachbuilders to style the H/T and ragtop versions of GT and sports cars

    Was a hardtop available?

Detachable hardtops were commonplace accessories on all sorts of ragtop cars by the middle 60s. I found no photos of the Vignale Spyder wearing one but I'm sure they existed.

FWIW Spyder is the correct spelling for Maseratis and Porsches. Alfas, Fiats and Ferraris use the i (Spider)

The resolution is pretty bad, but I can identify the brown 1957 Oldsmobile most clearly. The turquoise-colored car appears to be a 1952-54 Ford and the old woman is blocking what may be a 1951 Plymouth. The fin-tailed car appears to be a 1955-56 Plymouth.

    I believe that's a 53 Buick on the right.

Then a 1957 Ford Skyliner for the pink car with white top.

On the left is a 1958 Buick.

then a 1955 Plymouth in blue-green with dark green top.

Can't tell about the solid green car.

Then to the right of it is a 1953-1954 Pontiac.

    Then the brown 1957 Olds.

For those with IE as the browser,
here's a link to the full picture that isn't cropped on the right.

All I could see was from the '57 Olds to the left. I didn't see all those to the right of it.

The new Edmunds truncates all pictures too wide so they don't cut off the rightside frame. To check, I right-click, select properties, and copy the URL of the graphic. I put that into a new window and check to see if there was a part of the picture I didn't see.

From the left I see a light green '56 Plymouth, a turquoise '55 Plymouth, unidentifiable in the distance, a green '53 Pontiac, the brown '57 Oldsmobile, something light green, the '57 Ford Skyliner, a green & white '56 Buick peeking out, and a '51-'52 green Buick partly showing. Brrrr..............

Looks like a 1952 Chrysler or maybe an Imperial.
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
Close urnews, but it looks more like a 1954 Chrysler new Yorker to me :D
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
Yes, and with that small horizontal chrome piece before the rear tires, a 54 Chrysler New Yorker "Deluxe".
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
    1954 Chrysler new Yorker

Correct. Sorry Lost Wrench but the caption sez nothing about it being a "Deluxe".

I did some research, and lostwrench is correct. For 1954 Chrysler had both a New Yorker and a New Yorker Deluxe for about $150 more! Among the differences were a little extra chrome on the sides and an extra chrome strip in the grille. Who knew???????">

Well, I've never seen one of these, but we've got to get past this. Maybe it's some sort of French thing??????
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
My uncle had a 54 Chrysler when I was a little kid. My dad had a 54 De Soto at the same time. Personally, I liked the looks of the De Soto better, particularly the dashboard. I think 54 was when Virgil Exner started having influence at Chrysler and the vehicles seemed to start looking better and a bit more modern.

Christ Andys, that microcar looks like something that someone in Wisconsin built out of scrap and left in their back yard (all it needs is a homemade trailer to tow in the left traffic lane)!

I love the chromed fireplace grill.

Happy new year to everyone on the Mystery Car forum...

This little beast is a Mochet CM125 (I've only ever seen a CM175 which was a little different from this as it had a bar across the middle of the grille, rather than this fireguard mesh thing - early 50's I believe.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Here's another microcar with nearly as ugly a grille. No, this is not a child's pedal car!

Must be our browsers. The link worked a few minutes ago. Maybe the "fun police" are up to their old tricks.

Isn't that the new Lancia Delta, rumored to perhaps become a new Chrysler model in the US?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
    edited January 2011
Yes - its the current Delta - Lancias aren't sold in UK currently, indeed not since about 1990, but in this week's Autocar magazine they are suggesting that we will get it as Chrysler - together with the smaller Ypsilon, which I gather they are thinking of selling over with you as well.
I must say I find the Delta an attractive car, partly I suppose because we don't see many of them - this one was in Italy.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I agree, it is distinctive if nothing else.

Plus, the Fiat 500 came in at a lower-than-expected price. A similar surprise from a Dodge (?) Delta would be welcome.

With the Fiat / Chrysler tie-up you might also get Alfa Romeo - the new Guilietta is winning awards over here, and my colleague who drives one says it is great - while I am happy with my Mito, and find it fun to drive, and fast enough for me, although there was a problem with the Blaunpunkt CD/radio - had to have a new unit because it wouldn't eject CDs, within a few days of delivery...
We are thinking of getting a Fiat 500 for my partner - she doesn't actually have a car of her own at present, but needs something nippy to use locally and on the odd longer trip, and the 500 would fit the bill nicely - easy to park, loads of options, and she likes the colours etc..
