More info on the "Risky Business Porsche(s):

There were four different 928s used for filming, as well as two more cars used in the film's post-production phase.

… RB 928, as portrayed in the film, is a 1981 Platinmetallic 928 with a five-speed manual transmission, the primary 928 used for filming in real life was a Platinum Metallic 1981 928, but with an automatic transmission, … Since it had 15-inch instead of offset 16-inch wheels, it was only used in scenes shot above the car's beltline. It was used in all of the driving scenes as well as the chase scene, which took its toll on the car.

The second of two 928s used for driving scenes was a 1979 928 with a five-speed manual transmission, 16-inch alloy wheels, and an all-gold interior. …Since it was a pre-1981 model, it didn't come with factory Platinum Metallic skin, and thus had to be repainted to match the others. … can be seen primarily in driving scenes with wide shots where the whole car is in view, as well as in portions of the chase scene.

The third RB 928 was used for just one scene. It is the car Rebecca DeMornay's character, Lana, knocked out of gear just before it began to roll towards Lake Michigan with the keys locked inside. This, too, was a 1979 five-speed 928, but it was unlike the main five-speed driver in that it had a cream-colored interior.

The fourth and final RB928 used for filming was … dumped into Lake Michigan. …started life as a brown 1979 928 automatic with 16-inch Phone Dials… was re-sprayed in Platinum Metallic to match the others ... To comply with state pollution regulations as well as to "preserve" the drivetrain and electronics, the dump car was gutted. The missing V8 is obvious on film, as the front ride height is several inches higher than normal when it teeters on the rickety wooden pier…

The fifth and sixth RB928s were used in the film's post-production phase. Car number five was either a 1978 or 1979 928, though it is not clear. It didn't appear in the film, as it had a sunroof … was the car used in the film's movie-poster photo session.

So, the car pictured on the pier in the pic is actually a 1979 model, not a 1976.

I imagine the $8,000.00 repair quote was optimistically low, even in 1983 dollars. I'd imagine a submerged 928 would be a write-off.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Adjusted for inflation, that $8000 would be about $18000 today, so yeah, there's hardly a 928 worth that much in the entire world.

I agree definitely Buick. Some had 4 portholes instead of 3. Early 60s sounds right too. Maybe a Lesabre.

edited to add: Look at the swoopy spear-shaped front end of this convertible...wonder who was copying whom?

    1961 Buick LeSabre.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Right you are Lostwrench. 1961 was the year you could tell a Buick from an Olds by which way the fenders pointed--they pointed to the rear on the Oldsmobiles>

57 Chevy - I can tell by that dashboard I always disliked!

I always thought the dash on the '57 Chevy was pretty cool. Just one person's opinion. :-)

    what's with the floor shift?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I learned to drive stick on a '57 Chevy back in '67 or so. It was a column shift that belonged to a friend. Awful car. Maybe that's why I've never owned a GM, although my family always had plenty of Buicks. It's a wonder it didn't kill my taste for manual transmissions.

    what's with the floor shift?

A "four on the floor" was a popular mod for steet rods in the 1960s. I saw them in a '47 Ford and a '57 Fairlane to name a few.

There are some diehards who insist that a few '57 Chevys came with floor shifts, but this is highly unlikely. Yes, a period "mod", with "3 on the floor" most likely unless they did a Corvette driveline swap.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yup that's the first 2012 911 Porsche (997) Speedster to a Boston Dealer. They call that paint "Pure Blue".

    G'day

The column to floor shift conversion was popular for Australian derivatives of US cars in the 70's and early 80's. I drove one once and wondered why you would bother.

You can still buy Hurst kits to do the job http://www.thefind.com/cars/info-3-speed-manual-floor-shifter

    Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart.

I much preferred the previous boxy wagon over this less practical hatch.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,133
Correct, and I was surprised to see it, I didn't even know it existed. Aside from the Evo, Mitsubishi has pretty much disappeared from my radar, car-wise.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Supposedly they will stop making the Galant (which has become a rental car anyway) and Endeavor and try to build the Outlander Sport in Normal, IL.

They may end up exporting cars from the USA, given there's not enough demand here to keep that plant busy.

I wish them luck. The iMiev, Outlander, Outlander Sport, and Lancer will be about it for the whole lineup.

Well, the convertible is a 1964 Cadillac DeVille or Series 62. I can make out the hood of a VW Beetle, the rear of a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, a red Alfa-Romeo but not sure of the model or year, and what may be an early Porsche 911.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
I believe it's a Nissan Stanza wagon circa 1987. I remember seeing a gold one parked near the local post office back in the day.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Late 80s Nissan Stanza Wagon. Strange little car, competed with the Civic Wag-o-van and Tercel Wagon of its day.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,133
Yep, Stanza wagon, about '87. I remember several other tall wagons around that time, but not the Stanza. Looks very practical, but that doesn't sell cars very often.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
None of those 3 did much volume.

Then they figured they could re-package those cars as small crossovers, made to look like SUVs.

RAV4 and CR-V basically replaced those models. Nissan now has the Rogue, but it came much later. I guess they had the Patrol in other markets, though.

Sold as the Nissan Prairie elsewhere, too...I remember when I was in 4th grade or so, the family of a girl in my class had one...they were Japanese, which made the car seem very alien to me. These were replaced by a more rounded version ca. 1988.

Those period boxy Tercel and Civic wagons were much more common in my area, 4WD form included.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
It was before people needed faux butch looks and ride heights.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
Corolla All-Trac wagon, there are a number of these still around in my area, even a few Camry All-Trac.
