Very slow, glacial, or just special. Like this 1980 240d with a trailer hitch along with factory cruise control and A/C. I saw a new one equipped similar to this back in 1980 at Ed Potter Mercedes (since bought out by Germain brothers). The one in the link had a sticker over $16k in 1980 and that would be over $46k in today's money! To me these have always been "mystery cars" because I've known so few people who ever owned/wanted one.
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.
Those cars have a styling that passes the tenets of my art appreciation class teacher back in my undergrad years: it looks like what it's supposed to be and is designed to serve that purpose very well. His example of not good was the hula lamps from somewhere near that time in history. Was it an entertainment device or a lamp?
It was designed to be what it is and not a spaceship like some current vehicles here in the US -- or the picture in the post above this one!!!!
These Mercedes are just nice to look at even now because they were well designed.
or...you might also GET killed in a 300TD wagon---they are pretty scary slow if you have to get out of a stalled right lane into fast moving lane #2 traffic...been there, done that.
Some cars belong to a different era and should be driven only after using a Time Machine to the proper setting. :P
Form follows function. The W123 defines that. It is a handsome design more than 35 years after introduction - as it didn't adhere to any styles. It was just made to be a practical car. It's also one of the few MB with DOT/non composite headlights that looks good with them.
Sold to people who had nowhere to go and all day to get there? :shades:
The high price was justified by build quality and resale that back in the day, were virtually unmatched. The diesel fad didn't hurt either, and it was the height of malaise, so lots of other slow cars around.
That "China Blue" car is the equivalent color of my old car.
I wouldn't mind a minty 300D or SD Turbo, others might push it, 240D would probably be enough to annoy me, especially if automatic. They are worlds slower than even my fintail.
Nope it's not a Ssangyong or a Suzuki. They clothing of the guys driving it is the key to it's nationality, you can probably guess the maker from that.
Also, this is a picture from the Rear drivers side (rear wheel facing you). The kudzu makes it extremely hade to see the lines of the vehicle. I swear if the manu's would design the camo for the spy shots like kudzu, you would never figure out the lines.
Yes, a '74 or '75 due to the bumpers. "75 was the last year for the "real" Opel. Only way I know of to tell is under the hood. '75 had FI. And let me tell you from experience, it was a bad car to own if it broke! 1 year, rare tech in the early '80s, and very few sold. When you need an FI piece and there is 1 in the US, it is not a good thing. Great fun to drive though, after owning a Gremlin right before it!

Yup, like many cars of the era it had an involved name. It's a 1950 Nash Statesman Custom.

Before they went curvy. A Mercedes W123 model, from about 1980. I still think they look cool

I'd kill for a good 300TD wagon.

The cult built around 123s is to the point where prices seem to be very strong for the best cars.
I'd be surprised if that 240D came with those wheels...
Bundts could have been a dealer purchased upgrade, but yeah a 240D generally had hubcaps.
I think the word you were thinking of is glacial..

This is how you find a jewel in the south. Walk up and offer to cut the car out and remove it if you can keep it.

Ah, fond memories of growing up in the South.
The VW plant in Chattanooga is bordered by a couple of thousand acres of that stuff.

His previous ride resembles a mid-1930s Buick:
