The 41 year-old female driver plunged 65 feet off a bridge on the PA Turnpike in the Philly suburbs, landed on the railroad tracks below...and survived! :surprise:

"They looked great for a while, but now starting to cloud again. "

I figure when the time comes to polish them, I'll follow up with a set of those protective films to make it last longer.

    >Effectively look like new now.

After working on my 98's lights, I started putting a plastic polish on that protects aagainst UV rays. I put it on my other cars that have a different plastic over the headlights hoping it will keep them from deteriorating.

In other countries it was Michelin tires.

So maybe it wasn't the tires. ;)

The Ibiza almost seems more Audi-ish. That looks better than the A3.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I did that too, after cleaning the lenses with some toothpaste. The previous owners left some plastic polish around.

I bet 303 would work good too.

sorry, not the Ibiza, but the Leon.

Still, I do like the looks of it.

For a while they sold those in Brazil. Not sure if they still do.

New Seat Ibiza ... the Spanish Golf.

It is the "Spanish Golf" but it's not sold as an Ibiza, it's the new Seat Leon (Mk.3). As for being better looking than the new Golf, I'm inclined to agree although I am a fan of the new Golf. Previous Leons did not look better than their Golf counterparts IMO.

    Wikipedia Seat Leon Mk.3

The Ibiza is the Seat version of the smaller Volkswagen Polo.

Looks like Washington Square in NYC. It's hard to tell the cars by the lighting but the car furthest to the left appears top be a 1960 Pontiac. Is this a screen shot from "Breakfast at Tiffany's?"

'62 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner convertible behind the '60 Pontiac, and a '63 or '64 Mercury with 'Breezeway' window on the other side of the street.

Yep, that's Washington Square Arch, the start of Fifth Avenue (IIRC) and the entrance to Washington Square Park and that certainly is a '60 Poncho. I don't think this is from BAT.

I think you and Lemko have covered the identifiable cars in this shot. Given that it's Greenwich Village there should be a VW or MG somewhere but I don't see one.

In front of the Mercury could be another ~62 Ford, with a 59 Chevy in front of that.

Definite Lancia in the top of that rear quarter panel/trunk/C-pillar relationship.

Yes very much a Lancia, but the question is which Lancia.

The Mk I version shown was very rare but the next one (a little more common) had most unusual features>

No B-pillar or rear door handle>

It first hit the road around 1959, I don't want to cheat, name is on the tip of my tongue.

Pretty car, I get a very "camelot" vibe from it, somehow.

Pininfarina design. Flaminia Berlina from about 1959

Very much a Pininfarina design, it was the brainchild (and last design) of the company's founder Battista Pinfarina but the pictured car is not a "standard" Flaminia four-door which had a B-pillar.

    A little clarification:

The two-tone car is a 1955 Lancia Aurelia Florida B56 which lacked a B-pillar and had suicide doors and four outside door handles. It was supposedly aimed at the US market and was V8-powered. Only four were made and it's doubtful that any came to the US. But what a smashing design!

The darker colored car is the 1957 Lancia Flaminia Florida II which looks like a large coupe but retained the four doors of the Aurelia Florida this time with no outside door handle in the rear. The smaller Flaminia Coupe used the same styling themes on a two-door with a shorter wheelbase.

The original Aurelia Florida obviously borrowed heavily from American styling trends (wraparound windshield, tailfins and two-tone paint) but it's squared off, slab-sided design changed the entire styling idiom of postwar cars on both sides of the Atlantic.

The (Flaminia) Florida II also had a huge influence that showed up in such American designs as the Studebaker Hawks, '63 Buick Riviera and Pontiac Grand Prix and of course the '61 Lincoln Continental.

More on the influence of the Lancia Floridas HERE.

Not bad, not bad, except for the clown wheels. :P
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
I see some MB in the LEDs and headlights.

Chrome wheels don't look good on many cars from the past 20 years. That one is no exception.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Yup, that's the 2014 Chevrolet SS, basically a re-badged Holden Commodore (or an updated, re-badged Pontiac G8).

I'm not crazy about the chromed dubs either. I wish that fad would go away and take black rims with it.

According to my old car book, a '72-ish Montego wagon only started off at around 3800-3900 lb. They porked up fast though. By '76, they were pushing 4500 lb.

The Montego, and Ford's Torino, ended up getting so porky that Ford had to ditch the 6-cyl and the 302 V-8, and by '75-76 had to make the 351 the base engine!

And, once they got the 5-mph crash bumpers, both front and rear, I think the Montego and Torino wagons ended up being slightly longer than the full-sized LTD and Colony Park wagons!

Monteverdi Safari from about 1980. I think it was based on the International Scout II which was quite decent as a 4wd.

Not sure if it was ever popular. Style was not as pure as a Range Rover.

I am hopeless at US cars, but assume GM, maybe Pontiac from the style. Was 1959 the year that fins reached their zenith?

Isn't it gorgeous - totally impractical and road-hogging, but what a way to go!

That's a Bonneville convertible. The whitewall on the tires looks a little wider than I recall for that era.

You're certainly not hopeless Graham, that is indeed a 1959 Pontiac and Lostwrench is correct too, it's a Catalina although it has the Bonneville side trim which has something to do with it being made in Canada, anybody know what? (Canadian DM Ponchos back then used Chevy chassis and motors)

1959-60 was a kind of zenith for Detroit Iron in that the cars were as big and outlandishly styled as they ever would be. However those cars were terrible pigs with hideous gas mileage, poor braking, sloppy steering and mushy suspensions. (I learned to drive on a '59 Merc.)

The pictured car has a 345 hp 389CID V8 under the hood and the very rare and expensive Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels. The interior trim was even more outrageous>

I was fooled by the Bonneville stars and the J-spear trim. But it looks to have the extra length behind the wheel of the Bonneville in this view.

Are there any other views of this car, Andys120? The J-spear appears to have the same proportion as the Bonneville trim piece has which would be varied if the rear overhang were the shorter Catalina length.

I'd like to hear (see) more about the variation with the Canadian versions. In reality, the Bonneville's length was an extravagance and a Canadian version on the smaller base with high level outfitting would be a much more practical car.

I found this picture of a Bonneville-like trim on a normal Pontiac. It's in French. My 3 years of German don't help.

This site says the only 3 lines in '59 were Star Chief, Laurentian, and Pariesienne. No mention of Catalina...
