I have the new ES 350. For those of you who are wondering, the seats are ventilated with air from the air conditioner. If you feel the seats while driving the car, it is obvious that the air is much cooler than the surrounding air.

I had problems in this area too.

Hard to believe the ML system doesn't play MP3 disc but the base system does. I do not have the ML but can play MP3 on the JBL system.

Well I guess I could have worded my post a bit more "neutrally" (is there such a word?). In my defense, I don't think I worded my original post in such a way that I was already passing judgment on Lexus for such an oversight; I meant to say that IF (I did say "if") it wasn't available, then that would be odd for Lexus to have omitted it, given how "technologically-featured" the ES350 is.

In any case, all this is moot since it appears that it can read and play MP3 CDs based on your and another poster's observation. I'm sure you can understand the basis for my question; I was going off of the info--or lack thereof--that's currently available on Lexus' website. Since no one else (apparently?) previously posted that it was MP3-CD capable, I would have had no way of knowing until now if indeed such was the case.

The kit itself can probably be had for cheap; the hard part of course is the install. The install is not as easy as it would seem to be at first glance; thorough prep work needs to be done in order to install it correctly...it's almost sort of like tinting windows. You might want to see if there's a vehicle tint shop that might be willing to do the job for you; given the typical dealer markup on such a product, I wouldn't be surprised if you can find a place that can do the whole thing--parts and labor--for much less than what the dealer offers it for.

The obvious "convenience" by having it done at the dealer is that the cost of it can be "rolled" into your vehicle loan (assuming that you're not paying cash).
• tdohtdoh Member Posts: 298
Get it if peace of mind is a big thing for you, and if you are willing to pay the additional premium of getting it from the dealer.

Tire and Wheel Guarantee? What exactly does that cover, and how much are they asking for it? What kind of guarantee does this service offer for the wheel part of the deal that the factory warranty wouldn't already cover? I'm also guessing that the tire part of the deal probably covers punctures and similar; again, just like the wheel, I don't know what else this offer covers that the original tire warranty wouldn't already cover (other than flat-related issues). If this is the case, you'd be better off passing on this and just paying for a tire patch if you get a nail (assuming that the tire can be safely patched).

Although I agree that the ability to play MP3-encoded CDs is certainly useful, don't you think that an iPod (or similar high-capacity MP3 player) is a better solution? Filling the 6-disc changer with 700-MB CDs gives you a total of 4.2 gigabytes of music, but my 3rd-generation 40 GB iPod (with a true capacity of 37 or 38 GB) holds 9 times as much. In fact, it holds most of the music that I own. I expect that Apple will bring out an 80 GB model within the next year; at that point, I'll no longer have to decide what to leave behind.

Moreover, the iPod is blessedly easy to use. If you decide that you need, say, a 180-song playlist to make an upcoming long trip bearable, you can put it together in less time than it takes me to type this sentence. I have to use a cassette adapter to pipe the music on my iPod through our cars' sound systems. Even so, the sound quality approaches that of audio CDs. Jacked directly into the stereo system, as is possible on the ES 350 & other new cars, the iPod should sound every bit as good as a regular audio CD.

A few years ago, I would've lunged at the opportunity to play MP3 CDs in a car stereo. I burned the larger part of my music collection to MP3 CDs & I played them on 1 of those little iRiver MP3 CD players (via the inevitable cassette adapter when traveling). But then I bought the iPod, which transformed my listening habits. If you can, borrow one, try it in your car & see what you think.
• tnfantnfan Member Posts: 18
I have hooked up my IPOD to the IPOD jack and so far I am not overly impressed with the sound quality. For some reason I am having to turn the volume up to almost max to get any reasonable level of sound. Maybe it has something to do with my recordings. Will continue to tinker with this to see if it is just my ineptness.
• jimbresjimbres Member Posts: 2,025
What volume control are you referring to - the iPod's or the car's?

Try setting the iPod's volume control at or a bit past the half-way point. Then control the listening volume with the car's control. This is what I do (again, I use a cassette adapter) & I get as much volume as anyone in the car can tolerate.

Let us know if this works.

mldj98, thanks for directing me to Wilde Lexus of Sarasota. Tampa Bay never got back with me, Clearwater Lexus thought they were doing me a huge favor by taking $500 off the sticker (Premium Plus Package). Wilde discounted $2325. As they say, it's worth the drive. Thanks again!!!
• cleblanccleblanc Member Posts: 45
I have this same issue. The volume seems lower than it does for FM radio. I have it connected using a Monster charger cable which has the jack in it so you can use the Ipod with the dock connector rather than the headphone jack.
It sounds fine but I hear a hissing noise when I turn the car on and the audio is left on in AUX mode. But I don't like having to open and close the console to start and stop the Ipod all the time. I don't think it pauses when the car is turned off.
I am actually thinking of getting the SoundLinQ SLI by VAIS that I heard about so that I can control the Ipod through the car stereo system and also have the info displayed on the NAV screen. Is anyone familiar with this product. If so, how do you like it. I have been emailing them to find out if the ES350 is compatible and they say yes.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to know if the ES350 came with an option for a remote starter. This is an option on the Toyota Camry so I figured the ES would have it too. But I dont see it in the specs.
any opinions?
• art234art234 Member Posts: 99
It is my understanding that you cannot have a remote start device with any car which uses smart key technology. That is because theoretically there is no valet key per se for the vehicle, and therefore nothing to stuff up under the dash to enable the vehicle to start.

Placing a key fob up there would defeat the purpose of the smart key.

My iPod is working OK with my ES350, using a Belkin power adapter (which I had been using with my previous car and a cassette-shaped thing to get the sound into my old car stereo since there was no input jack) and a stereo cable ($5 at Radio Shack) to connect the audio output from this to the input jack of the car stereo. The iPod does pause when the car is turned off, but you need to get at the iPod again to start it up when you start driving again. That SoundLinQ thing sounds interesting... how does it connect to the car stereo? Anyway, according to the owner's manual the ES350 stereo will play MP3 discs, but I haven't actually tried it. The advantage of that over the use of an iPod would be your ability to control it through the nav-screen interface, while the disadvantage, as others have noted, is the lesser capacity vs. a high-end iPod.

I don't know about the Blackberry, but the Bluetooth integration has worked OK for me with a Motorola phone and the Verizon service. However, the phone book upload/download doesn't work. If your other phone says it supports Bluetooth, then it will probably work, but I'm not sure.

I always liked the last generation ES330 but never bought one because of the sluggish tranny problems that everyone had reported?

How's the tranny in the new ES350? Have the inherant problems with the old tranny been fixed?
• bobbyshredbobbyshred Member Posts: 44
I found the tranny flawless.

Just bought an ES-350 and traded in a '98 ES-300, which was a great car. The 300 had a lip on the edge of the console that allowed me to lay my cell phone, ipod, etc. on the console. Now I have to use the drink holder and ashtray for all my stuff. Is anyone aware of the availablitiy of any leather or nylon storage pockets with velcro, or that might hang over the console. Thanks.
• garmogarmo Member Posts: 20
Just bought an ES-350 with the Premium Plus pkg. (no navigation or Mark Levison) for $35,900 + ttl ($1,600 off the list price) from Mike Smith at Park Place Lexus in Grapevine. Sewell in Fort Worth was unwilling to discount off the list price.
• vluuvluu Member Posts: 100
Did you have to haggle down to get the $1,600 or how much was the initial offer from the sales person/dealer?
• lahamjatlahamjat Member Posts: 7
Hello, just wondering if there has been anyone in the Chicagoland area that have been getting any discounts. I have seen only two ES350 where I live and both were not the UL package. I also drove by Naperville Lexus through their lot and did not see one UL version. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
• garmogarmo Member Posts: 20
His intial offer was $35,900 for a car with the Premium pkg., but I saw another car with the Premium Plus pkg. that he had at the dealership and which I liked. He did not increase the price because of the option upgrade. He would not go any lower, even though I tried to get him to.

So what do you guys do about keeping your interior carpeting clean? For lack of anything better our temporary solution is a clear floor mat that we got at Walmart for $6 for the set ...
I took 2 pic's of them and added them to my pic site ... http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery...46984&members=1

So 1 of neighbors told me that at 3:30 am they were awoken by their dogs who were barking at 3 guys, 1 of whom appeared to have a slimjim checking out mine and their new cars. Their awakening scared them off, but we feel they'll be back.
So what are your all experiences with theft & attempts and failures and the scratches , etc,. that they leave behind?
• fuente858fuente858 Member Posts: 24
Try some of the clear sticky back roll film that RV dealers use to keep the carpets clean. It
sticks OK and removes easily with no residue.

Get LoJack police recover 90% of all autos stolen with this device installed as well as
busting chop shops where car was taken.
Your Ins will take care of damage to vehicle if you have the right ins. co. They will
reduce the cost of coverage as well.

one word: floor mats

wash them on occasion

replace them every couple of years

don't turn your Lexus into your granny's living room, with the plastic covers on the furniture

pay yourself a buck for every time you look at the floor and don't see some hideous cellophane or Walmart clear mat. Then take those accumulated dollar bills and pay for a shampoo at your local carwash. Friends don't let friends use clear floor mats!! :-)
• garmogarmo Member Posts: 20
You get an "AMEN" on that, alp8.

I'm looking for either a Premium Package or a Premium Plus /w Nav. Here in MD/VA/DC area... there is no Premium Plus w/o Nav. So if I really want the Premium Plus.... I don't have an option but to get the Nav. Unless I special order... then I might as well forget about getting a deal.

Personally I think the Nav makes it look a lot better.... but having to pay 3K more.... that's my turn off. I'm on a tight budget for the ES, so it will come down to if they discount. Hopefully by the end of the year... the excitement will die off and discounts will be available.

If these other cars are so good why are they using Lexus as a benchmark? Since Lexus hit
the market in 1990 (only 16 years ago) these other cars have been struggling to keep up.
Why is there no big deals or incentives given by Lexus? Because they sell with out them. I
would buy American if we could make something that could compete in longevity and
service. The last American car I had was an 1988 top of the line from one of the big 3. It
was in the shop so many times for many different reasons so I couldn’t use the lemon law.
I didn’t really have a car. I was in a rental I had to pay for. American auto industry is not
service oriented when it comes to selling or servicing their products. And I don’t see it
changing any time soon. Every time I get ready to trade I look at American built, or
should I say, something with an American name that’s assembled in Canada and parts are
made in Mexico. I am hoping for the day when the American auto industries wise up and
put the money into production again rather than padding the pockets of upper
management. Toyota and GM were to go into a joint venture in the middle to late 80s on a
car to be built in California. When Toyota saw GM was so top heavy they suggested GM
put two thirds of their management back on the floor where they could be productive. GM
refused so Toyota went home. I do wish The big 3 would build a car I could feel good
with in all respects like I do with Lexus. I now have a new ES350. I tried once again to
give my business to America but once again was turned down with their lack of interest in
their product and myself.

You know what I like? The ad for the Lucerne where they tout the "Available V8" in comparison to whatever foreign car they're in competition with.

Cracks me up because the reason the competition doesn't offer a V8 is because IT'S UNNECESSARY! Most of the modern Asian/German powertrains put out more than enough power with a 3.5L six mated to a 5/6/7 speed auto that you don't need those gas guzzling extra two cylinders.

I was watching one of those "talking head news shows" with some "non-car guy" economists talking about the US auto industry and one of them said, "What they need to do is build cars that the American people WANT to buy."

I WANT to buy American, but they don't offer anything that I would put my hardearned money into.

Hello every one. I have been reading every body's posts on this site and decided to write a few comments myself about the ES350. This is my first post and I hope you guys accept me here.
Here is my thoughts about the ES350.
I have an ES300, 2003 and love it. I was waiting for the new ES350 for a long time like any body else here. As soon as the Lexus dealership in Southern California got one I went for a test drive. To be honest and speak truly from bottom of my heart, I did not like the car for many resons. I think the car is/was hyped too much by the Lexus and a lot of consumers. It is for sure loaded with technology gagets and computer chips & wires but the car is made of cheap material. I hated the dashboard material. It is cheap and will probably fade in time especially in the sunny states in the summer. The small speakeres on the dash is not placed with precision. They are already rough around the edges. The cockpit is for sure not better than the ES300/330. It looks cheap. Just a couple of dials. The nav. console is odd. The curves on the top don't finish smoothly. They just wanted the curve line to die somewhere on the dash. If we get used to the ES350 dash for a while then most of us will probably agree with me. As soon as the salesman opened the trunck, I noticed the bottom of the rear windshield edges that has not been polished by Lexus. It seems like they just got a piece of glass from junkyard, polished the top and installed it. I was not expecting a quality like that from Lexus. The salesman said "well yah". I don't care who says what but I know the car is not quieter than my ES300. I test drove the ES350 twice for that reason. Quietness, Comfort and smoothness is the same as the ES300/330. I guess Lexus wanted to lower the material quality to keep the price at almost the same range. If you don't believe me then just compare the ES330/300 dash material & design with the ES350. You will see a big difference in craftmanship. Again, I think this car is way way too hyped by Lexus and a lot of consumers. I guess it will be like this for a while and then every body will realize the quality difference. It is just because it is new to us. Well, it was my personal feelings and find-outs about the car after 2 times test driving it and thought to shere it with the rest. Now I am considering the new GS350. If any body has any information about it, I'll appreciate it to share with me. I love the ES300/330 but couldn't get the same from ES350. oh well, just my feelings.
• tdohtdoh Member Posts: 298
Perhaps not necessary in a given class (need for 8 cylinders), but don't believe for a moment that the Asian/German carmakers believe that 8-cylinder vehicles are absolutely NOT necessary. Why else have Japanese carmakers recently (in the last <10 years) offered 8-cylinder vehicles? Heck, the Germans offer more models w/ more than 8-cylinder engines than what's available from the Big 3...

If the foreign competition feel that 8 cylinders are truly unnecessary...then why did they feel the need to crank out vehicles like the Lexus LS430, BMW 7-series, MB 4/5/6xx class, Infiniti Q/M45, etc.? Besides--for almost any particular class that offers 8 cylinders, I'm fairly certain that the Japanese/German model costs more than its' domestic equivalent (Cadillac might be the only exception)...if there is even one available in that class.
• tdohtdoh Member Posts: 298
I don't think I was arguing that an iPod or similar player wasn't a good/better solution. As you pointed out, the iPod has the advantage of holding more music than 6 MP3 CDs...but let's be real here--that's its' ONLY advantage, as far as an in-car environment is concerned. And if folks say that that's all that really matters? I'll put it this way...not everyone who owns a motor vehicle--let alone one that supports either portable MP3 players and/or MP3 CDs--owns a 30+ GB portable MP3 player. Plus, one doesn't have to deal with having to take a portable MP3 player into/out of a vehicle every time one gets in/out of his car; I wouldn't supposed you'd be just as comfortable leaving your iPod in your vehicle when unoccupied than you would be if you left 6 MP3 CDs in the changer instead, would you?

Now don't get me wrong--using an iPod or similar to listen to MP3s in a vehicle is a more practical option, when compared to being limited to 6 MP3 CDs at a time...but like I said, not everybody owns a large-capacity portable MP3 player.
• cleblanccleblanc Member Posts: 45
I had been using an Ipod in my car. I have a 60GB one but I mainly listen to two different playlists. It was a pain starting it up each time I got in the car. Also it does not pause when I make or receive a call. So today I made an MP3 CD that held 100 songs. It works a lot better than the Ipod since the radio had full control. But I didn't like the display. It only showed me a truncated folder name and file name. There is a nice detail screen that shows album, artist, song, genre. But that is only available when you access Folder List which is only available when the car is not moving. That seems totally useless. So I read up on it in the manual and the detail screen only seems to be available on the non-Nav versions through the use of a 'Text' button.
I was hoping to maybe buy a SoundLinQ SLi unit from Vais Tech but since that uses the MP3 interface, I'm not sure if that won't have the same problem with the details not displaying.
Does anyone know for sure?
• ctlctl Member Posts: 129
I believe you honest said what you feel about the ES350. Problem is, it is a bit too nit picking and subjective. I personally don't agree that the material quality has gotten worse (subjective). edge of glass?? Sure that comfort and smoothness is hard to improve upon an already high standard, but power and drive improvement is major.

True to ur conclusion as to the GS, I think probably ur desire has simply outgrow the car, while ES cannot outgrow a GS or LS.

The "Blue Onyx Pearl" is a dark color that looks like black if you look at it in the evening or if you look at it at certain angles. However, this dark blue "sparkles and dances" when in the sunlight. My wife is against having a black car for practical reasons, but somehow agreed to this "fantastic" color. This says alot! However, to set it off just right, I suggest getting it with the "Cashmere" leather interior. My "Blue Onyx" ES 350 should be delivered to the dealer by the end of the week.

FYI, I almost went with the "Ruby Red Metallic" with the "Cashmere" leather interior, but my wife didn't like it.
• cleblanccleblanc Member Posts: 45
I totally agree. My husband wanted me to get the Black ES350 but I didn't want to for practical reasons. My first choice was the Royal Ruby Metallic and it is a great color which I ended up getting. But my second choice was the Blue Onlyx Pearl for all the reasons you mentioned.
• vluuvluu Member Posts: 100
I have seen this color on an IS350 when I was at the dealership to test drive the ES350. It's very nice. I have been leaning toward black/ smokey mica, but this color does interest me. I'm still waiting to see it on the ES350. They didn't this color in stock for the ES350... so until I actually see it on the car... it will be up in the air.
• bobbassbobbass Member Posts: 34
My comment was directed at American manufacturer’s bragging about the V8 option when Toyota and Nissan can give equal performance and BETTER mpg with their powertrains.

I guess my point is, especially in THIS forum, potential buyers might be perfectly satisfied with the performance of modern Asian/German 3.5L V6's and not feel it necessary to go with a V8 and it’s lower fuel mileage.

When first hearing about the Lucerne, I actually thought it might be a vehicle to consider. Then, as soon as I saw that it was the same old 3.8L GM V6 mated to a FOUR-speed auto they’ve been offering for umpteen years, I immediately crossed it off my list. Geez, even the optional V8 is still saddled with that FOUR-speed auto.

American manufacturers MAY be closing the gap in quality/reliability with Asian manufacturers, but they’re still a generation behind in the powertrain department. Until they eliminate that deficiency, my car-buying dollars will continue to go the foreign competition.
• robynlrobynl Member Posts: 38
Thanks for the feedback. I finally did get to see Blue Onyx Pearl at the dealership. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy, dreary day and it didn't look that great. I am sure it looks much better in the sunlight. Test drove a white/cashmere and really liked that. I do want the UL package which is very hard to come by and want to see more colors in person before deciding. I am still tempted by the Ruby Red Metallic but don't know if I can bring myself to buy a red car. Oh well, maybe the decision will be made for me.

i found your forum to be very informative, please could you inform me what the minimum octane level is for the fuel to be used in this car. i had been looking at the 325i but the car seems to have serious problems with the run flat tyres, is it the same for this car, thanks.
• psychdocpsychdoc Member Posts: 147
***i had been looking at the 325i but the car seems to have serious problems with the run flat tyres, is it the same for this car, thanks.***

What "problems" are you referring to?

As far as I know, the ES350 does not use run flat tires so I don't imagine there would be any problem here.

I believe the minimum octanre rating recommended is 91. But it is the same for my 2002 ES300 and it runs perfectly on good old regular (87 octane).

My car will be in my hands in two weeks! UL in ruby red/black. I can't wait!
• robynlrobynl Member Posts: 38
Did you preorder your UL or did the dealer locate it for you??
• sjaievesjaieve Member Posts: 252
thanks, the run flat tyres have been reported to run out after 5000 miles (in some cases) and they cost far more than the regular tyres........, dont intend to bore you with too much detail.

MSRP for new Lexus ES350 with premium plus package and xm radio is $41,525. Was offered $27,600 on my 2005 Lexus ES330 with 19,000 miles with navigation system and Mark Levinson audio system. Trying to determine if the $27,600 is a fair trade value.
• cleblanccleblanc Member Posts: 45
I was also deciding between the Ruby Red and the Blue Onyx and then chose the Ruby Red. These cars look much better in the sunlight where they really shine. The Ruby red is a very dark conservative red but looks brilliant in the sunlight. Whatever you choose, good luck. They are both great colors. But try and compare them on a nice day.

I really like the cashmere for interior but all of my previous cars have had darker interior colors for practical reasons. So I always end up getting a light ext with dark int combo. Can you share some of your experiences with cashmere as the interior color? How do you keep it clean?
• alp8alp8 Member Posts: 656
I think this is a myth. (or a commonly-held misconception)

consider that we all know that black cars show dirt more than white cars. But we assume the opposite vis a vis interiors. WHY? My charcoal carpet looks dirty very fast. That is because most "dirt" that gets on your carpet is lighter in color than the charcoal.

Sand colored carpet looks clean for a long time. The dirt is hidden by the color.

Of course, ink SUCKS on light leather. It's hidden on the dark stuff. I got an ink stain on camel-colored leather in the first month. [weeps openly]
• psychdocpsychdoc Member Posts: 147
I'm not entirely sure what the difference is. I ordered it at the dealership (Rallye Lexus in Glen Cove, NY) and I told him I would accept a few different color/interior choices. He said the red with black (my first choice as it turned out) would be in by the end of this month. So I don't know if that means I "ordered it" or he "found it."

I suspect the latter.
