I have the body side moldings which were installed (adhesive) by the dealer. They retailed for $250 installed but I got him to throw them in for free when I bought the car two weeks ago.

Has anyone heard of this problem?
Voice commands are not understood only for climate control.
    75 degrees, 68 degrees, etc...
Dealer reset some codes today, worked for 5 minutes then same problem.
I know, why don't I just use the buttons. I figure I paid all this money, why not use all the features.
Most other commands are understood (nav, radio)
I'm afraid this is a software problem that they may never have a fix for.

The lack of body side moldings on the latest style of new cars kind of bother me. I know they don't prevent all dings, and a lot depends on where you park, what you park next to, etc. Do you have a picture of how the car looks with the moldings? lexus.com has a very tiny picture on their website, and it's very difficult to see how the car looks overall, with the moldings. Thanks.

I am starting to read about more and more people complaining their new ES350 havinga transmission problems.

Just how serious is this? It is becoming wild spread? Can it be fixed by the dealer? Has Lexus issued any technical service bulletin on this? Is Toyota doing anything about it?

I have placed an order for a new ES350 for late September delivery. Should I cancel my order?

    Comments please.

I have 1400 miles on mine and the tranny works fine. When slowing down, it acts a little flakey from about 30mph down to 10mph, like it's hunting for a gear. No real big deal. Smooth as silk when accelerating though.
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
    Maybe it's me, but.......

I have an 05 Avalon LTD which is notorious for a lousy transmission - just read the postings on the Avalon board -search on "transmission". People are about the commit suicide based on some of the comments. My car - zero, zilch, nada problems - shifts so smooth accelerating or declerating that you can barely feel it.

Now, the 350 has a "quirky" transmission. My 350 shifts identically to the Avalon. Could it be the way I drive? Don't know, but the Avalon and 350 are flawless in every respect except perhaps for the crappy console in the 350 and nearby controls for seat ventilation.

If you want to cancel an order based on some of the comments posted, I would think long and hard before doing so.

I took it to the dealer to have the seatbelt reminder chime disabled and they said that they could not do it. It is listed as an option in the manual, however the dealer says that it is not in their scanner so they cannot program it. They tried with no success. They also said their scanner is up to date. Any other ways to disable it? Has anyone had this successfully done at the dealers? I am going to call lexus tomorrow and find out why it is in the manual if you cannot program it.

My wife and I just took our first test drive today. We absolutely loved it and are very seriously considering it with the Premium Plus package for our next car. However, the lack of protection on the side is a major concern. To pay that much and have it dinged up at the local parking lot would be a shame. I saw a new Avalon with the body side molding and it looked very sharp. Do you have a picture of your 350 with the molding installed? This is a major factor in our decision.

yes....told no parking assist sensors until fall
  • ncdaydreamerncdaydreamer Member Posts: 31
I hope this has not been mentioned before, but, the temperature-voice-commands work-around is: start your car and allow the system to stabilize. Then, turn off your car, wait a few seconds and turn your car back on and the temperature voice commands will work.

Lexus is aware of the problem but no permanent fix as of yet. After the car ignition is off for an hour or more the voive recognition software "goes to sleep". Turning the ignition on, then off and back on will magically make them work. I have trouble getting it to understand my voice when I say "seventy" but it works fine with my wife's voice.

SNAFU is a term we used in the army and stands for "situation normal all fowelld up". I'm picking up my car tomorrow at Prestige Lexus in Ramsey NJ. I was told by Lexus in California 10 days ago that the body side moldings were now available. The parts dept at Prestige ordered them this past Monday morning. The computer accepted the order, however before the end of the day it came back canceled. The story now is before the end of the month. I'm taking the car tomorrow and they will be put on as soon as they arrive .
  • richard43richard43 Member Posts: 23
what are the moldings costing you?
  • carrelman2carrelman2 Member Posts: 80
Moldings go for about $204. Mine are part of the deal.I would not of turned in my previous car(coming off lease) had I known there would be a delay.

I have owned my ES350 for 11 days, 3 of those days it has been in service, still is. The car suddenly shuddered between 1st & Second grears and my check engine and VSC lights went on. My friend has had her ES 350 for 3 weeks, she boke down completely in Florida's Panhanhadle where there are no Lexus Dealers nearby. She has her car at a Toyota dealer. Anyone else have this problem? Does Lesxus have a fix or do I have a Lemon along with, I am sure, many others?

I regret that you have had these problems with your new ES350. It would be inappropriate to attempt to diagnose the root cause of your issue via this Forum. However, have you talked to Lexus HQ directly re your concerns?

You may reach a Lexus case manager by calling the Lexus Customer Assistance Center at 800-255-3987. They are there Monday through Friday until 6pm PDT and on Saturdays until 4pm PDT.

Thank you for your comments. Hopefully your issue can be resolved to your satisfaction promptly.

Yes, But you have to register your cars VIN number at www.lexus.com

After hearing the rumors about the Ruby UL not being made and the Xenon head lights and parking assist not being available until fall we bought a Ruby with Black premium plus with Navi from Merriville IN. I originally ordered a Ruby with Cashmere premium plus without navi. Sticker was 39344 or something alike. Merriville gave me an additional $500 off to take the Black interior. So I got a total of $2000 off sticker. Final price $39249 plus All weather mats thrown in. I'm very happy with my purchase I just wish I could have gotten Cashmere. I may trade for Ruby w/cashmere UL next year, who knows. I just hope my ES does not have transmission problem that a few are experiencing. This seems to be the least reliable car Lexus has made. Hope I'm wrong. :) By the way my salesman said all new ES 350s are hitting the ports as either a $37170 premium, $40289 premium plus, or $44344 UL. That's it. Most are lower models.

mcaso, I would think that if it were a true s/w problem that it would be consistent across all cars. It isn't. I input the voice temperatures by number with no problem. So, hang in there with your dealer. It is most likely something specific to your set up.

Our ES350 is an extremely quiet car when driving over relatively smooth roads. However, when driving on textured surfaces, which many Texas highways have, there is a very loud, constant, rumbling noise like your inside of a 50 gallon drum. Does anyone else have this issue? Is it due to the type of tire used? I would think these are the softest tires made since they are only supposed to last 18k miles and wouldn't make this kind of noise.
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
these are the softest tires made

I didn't know there was such a thing as soft tires...:) Have you checked your tire pressure? After I took delivery of my car, pressure was 40 lbs, so I reduced it to what was called for in the book. It improved the ride but the fact is, different roads produce different rides (and associated noise). Asphalt vs concrete vs gravel vs vs vs...different ride, different noise. You won't get the same noise level all the time.

I test drove an Acura TL (06) before purchasing the 350 - noise (and handling) was night and day. It has always been amazing to me the difference in noise level of any Honda/Acura product compared with Toyota/Lexus. Quietness of the latter blows the former away.

Finally, where did you see that they are only supposed to last 18K miles... :confuse:

Are you talking about the venerable Michelin MXV 4 Energy's that come on pretty much every ES 350? These are OK tires but you must keep a few things in mind. First and foremost they are "all season" tires and, as such, are at best a compromise. They are not as "soft" as summer tires nor anywhere near as "grippy." As for tread life, I think they are rated over 400 and should be good for about 40,000 miles of normal driving. I have no idea at all where you got your "18k" figure. If you had a really "sticky" summer performance oriented tire that might be about right. It would also ride softer and provide much better traction and handling. For those of you who live in areas without snow, I'd STRONGLY recommend asking your dealers to put on summer performance tires instead of the Michelins. The Michelins are a somewhat dated design and there are much better tires out there for substantially less money. Hell, even Michelin's own Energy Exalto tires are better and much cheaper. As I'm here in NYC I'm afraid I'm stuck with the necessary compromises of all season tires. But always rememeber, all seasons are inevitably going to be a compromise and will never give you the best handling this, or any other car is capable of.

As I said, for those of you in areas without snow, you'd be crazy to have all seasons on your cars.

Tread life of 20k or less.

    Go to Lexus.com

Under "select a model" click ES.

    Then click "exterior".

Then scroll to the bottom of the page and see note 1.

It states that tire life may be substantially less than 20,000 miles. Direct from the horses mouth. The horse being Lexus.
  • kreativkreativ Member Posts: 299
If you drive aggressively on the summer tires (which have 200 or less treadwear rating), they may only last 20K or less. But passive drivers and those with the all-season tires (400 treadwear rating) should expect longer tire life.

As for what Lexus says, it's to cover their butts.

">I'm a newbie to forums, so I hope I'm posting to the correct discussions. I plan on purchasing a new ES 350 premium plus w/navi this fall, and I'm not sure the Mark Levison system is worth the difference in price(plus there're hard to find in the Cincinnati market). When I recently test drove a new ES350, I thought the premium audio system sounded as good as the Bose unit in my 9 year old Maxima. I know this is somewhat personal taste, but could you please tell me your experiences or opinions with the standard premium audio system. My salesman said the unit is made by a Japanese company starting with an "N" I'd have to see it in print again or hear it pronounced to know the name, he thought it is a notch up over Bose. Any help would be appreciated.<img src="

Does anyone have the body side mouldings installed on their ES 350 ? How do they look ? Do they improve the appearance ? How much did they cost ?

I'm waiting for a 350 in Blue Onyx Ultra Luxury. Does anyone have one ? Can I see a picture ?
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
    Probably Nakamichi.
  • kreativkreativ Member Posts: 299
Before Mark Levinson came around, the high-end audio in Lexus vehicles was made by Nakamichi (which the ES never had). With the exception of the IS, the standard "premium audio" is made by Pioneer.
  • maximafanmaximafan Member Posts: 592
I have been really curious about the quality
of the base stereo in the ES also. I don't
even have the bose system in my '02 Maxima
and I can tell you it sounds substantially
better than the base stereo in the Lexus RX.
    (This was in a 2004 RX330 model). I was
wondering if the base stereo in the ES is the
same as the RX, because if it is, I'm not
going to be a happy camper.

I'm trying to remember that name brand radio
that starts with the "N". I think it's
Nakamichi or something similar to that.
I believe it used to be an upgraded brand
in the older Lexus GS models. Although
I don't demand the best in a sound system,
I do want some decent sound. Anyone's
opinions and thoughts on this would be
    appreciated.

    I had a Nakamichi in my 02 ES300.
  • maxhonda99maxhonda99 Member Posts: 1,289
Nakamichi was introduced in the ES300 starting in 1998 in the 2nd year of the 2nd generation ES300 and the Nakamichi continued on into the 3rd generation ES300.

I ended up buying the G35x. It was all about the handling.
I used to have a Mercedes C320 which got totalled due to some idiot driver cutting in front of me at when I was doing 60 mph. I test drove both cars and money wasn't an issue. The 350 had a vague feel to me. I just didn't feel in control of the car. I live in South Jersey and it seems like everyday you have to make emergency manuevers. I love the Lexus quality, fit and finish. The nav and sound system were much better than the G35x. I am looking for a quick response when I turn the wheel and the Lexus just didn't feel right. I guess because I had the Mercedes for 5 years I am used to that same handling. You certainly can feel the rough road when driving the G35x but you also have no fear when have to avoid the next idiot that's on a mission to hit your car.

On another tangent why is the Edmunds TMV so innacurate. Why does it show that people are paying MSRP when in reality they are getting $1500-2000 off the the MSRP. I actually went into the Lexus dealership saying I notice that customers are paying sticker. It's funny, before I had my Mercedes I had a new Honda Accord and the dealer refused to sell me the car at Edmunds TMV letting me walk out door. I eventually bought one elsewhere. I got my 2006
G35x at $400 over invoice and this is in the month after the incentives were cut. I still might have paid too much
because there is a holdback of $1000. I was up against time as the insurance company is now ready to offer me a settlement for my totaled car and the rental clause in the policy would be terminated. Once they pay you, you car is no longer going to be repaired and that ends the $30 a day rental. I may had a few weeks at best to look for another car.

My QX4 has Bose audio and my RX300 has the standard audio (Pioneer). The RX300 Pioneer is noticeably better than QX4 (6 speakers) Bose, richer and much clearer. RX300 (7 speakers) has a subwoofer.
  • kreativkreativ Member Posts: 299
Thanks for the info on the Nakamichi in the '97-'01 ES. Both you and zekeman1 say the '02 ES300 had Nakamichi as well, but the '02 ES300 was when the Mark Levinson upgraded audio was introduced to the ES line. ???
  • seaweedseaweed Member Posts: 5
I have the Mark Levinson sound system but notice that I only have a DVD changer operation with the navigation screen. The manual says I should also have a CD changer menu with CD's. The CD menu is slightly differnt from the DVD menu. I do not get a CD menu no matter what buttons I push. Does anybody else have this problem? The dealer has no answer but says to bring the car in tomorrow.
  • bash4bash4 Member Posts: 13
I can't believe you chose the G35. There is no comparison in drive and comfort, not to mention size. You got a sports car in the G35 pure and simple. It rides rough and has plenty of power. You should have test drove the IS 300. They are about the same size and I'm sure handling on the IS is very good( don't know from experience). Well you gave up a lot of luxury, reliability, and resale. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences. Good luck :surprise:

I picked up my ES350 on Friday7/7 without the body side moldings which will not be available until the latter part of July. Some mix-up at Lexus in California. The dealer gave me an IOU and will call me when they are in stock. I guess I'll have to be careful where I park until then. By the way I've gotten some feedback from some friends of mine interested in getting the car only to hear that some STUPID salespeople are telling people that the ES350 runs on regular gas. That is not true ,they only want to make a sale. Boy they must be pretty hungry and resort to lying. Premium only for that car. By the way I love the car really a luxurious ride.
  • es07es07 Member Posts: 1
I was just checking the Yahoo site, and there are three posts from owners who are havng serious transmission problems with their new ES. I am supposed to pick mine up the end of the week and now i'm concerned. Has anyone heard of any transmission problems?

"By the way I've gotten some feedback from some friends of mine interested in getting the car only to hear that some STUPID salespeople are telling people that the ES350 runs on regular gas."

I use premium but the manual states that you can use regular, but you might see a slight loss in power and mileage. So while not recommended it is doable. So guess its not the salespeople lookin' so dumb...

You answered your own question I think.
Your comparing the standard audio to a 9 year old bose system. I guarantee if you listen to a new state of the art system with the proper media you will hear an enormous difference. However, that being said, it is a large premium to pay, so in the end it WILL come down to personal choice.
If you think the premium sound is as good as you need then by all means spend no more.

I know from my experience( i have a 2002 TL ) with the bose system, the lexus standard system could not match up at all.
There was 1 feature that i really liked with the standard audio though, and that was the different preset levels that were available. I thought that was a nice feature. Happy Shopping ! :)
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
I've only had 1 tank of premium gas in my 350 (when I picked it up), all the rest have been regular. I'm getting 26 mpg in nothing but city driving. Am I doing something wrong?
  • sammyssammys Member Posts: 30
I still don't know how you do regular in the ES350. I mean, you can do it but I would think mileage (mpg) would suffer and you'd be filling up more frequently, not to mention engine knocking going up steep upgrades.
I've used 89 (plus grade) in my ES330 for the last 3 years without any problems. Never used premium and never tried regular. I plan on staying with Plus as the ES350's engine is even more powerful than the ES330's.

You might want to check out the forum: "ES 350: MPG-Real World Numbers"

Owner's manual notwithstanding, I think it's some kind of federal law that there be a seatbelt reminder chime on new vehicles sold in the U.S. (since when? I dunno...but fairly recent, I would think). On some vehicles it can be disabled but only for vehicles used in some sort of public safety capacity (e.g., police vehicles, etc.).

I remember reading something about this because I frequent one of the various GM truck forums and more than a few folks over there are also annoyed about them seatbelt reminder chimes; one of them had asked a dealership about it and was told that it could be programmed out, but only under specific exemptions which of course the majority of us would not fall under.
  • frostyrfrostyr Member Posts: 20
IMHO the standard premium sound is very poor and should not be in a car of this quality. I don't think that the ES uses a sub-woofer. The bass is coming from the doors rather than the rear shelf. I have a 2002 Avalon with a JBL system that was not very expensive. The Avalon system is much, much better that the one in the ES. That should not be. I would like to have the speakers upgraded if that will be possible, if not I'll live with it because it doesn't matter too much to me. The sound system is the only thing in the car that is sub-par. The rest of the car is perfect. This is a beautiful car and we are extremely happy with it!

Congratulations on your new baby! I am still waiting to see the body side moldings before making up my mind. It would be much appreciated if you could insert a digital pic in a future post when you get your moldings. My Lexus salesman does not want to get involved in this issue. He tells me to go to the parts department. It seems many others are in the same boat.

Maybe this chart which is taken right out of the 2007 ES350 Owners Manual will answer your question!
