My guess is that the VCM will work better over time. The use active noise cancellation via speakers and special motor mounts to mask the inherent vibration cause by cutting off an entire bank of cylinders in a V-6.
Note that I do notice the engagement. I also hear my waterbed heater. Yikes. It is not notiable by all people but I think even the later 05 Odysseys have better engineering of the NVH of this.
Also note that MPG is not all that better in the real world. In Odyssey you will see that the claim is 3 mpg better but the VCM engine has revised gear ratios that give you 10% higher rpms on the highway.
1. YOu get better performance overall 2. You need the higher RPMs since 3 cylinders are not working. 3. If you drive in town my guess is that VCM may actually be less than a wash and you get less MPG but better performance. 4. The VCM model gears down less due to better torque curve (lower rpm) and mainly due to higher gearing--so less gear hunting going on. I like that.
Overall, VCM OK but perfectionists will notice it.
I expect 2WD pilot with VCM to rate 1 city and 3 hwy better than current AWD. 2WD along is worth 2 mpg (weight and occasional kick in), The VCM could provide similiar benefit of 1-2 but I have hard time seeing a 4 mpg improvement.
I am heading down the path of purchasing a new car / suv. The Pilot is my first choice ( 2nd Morano). My question: I have been looking at various dealerships and have seen some Pilots with 20 inch wheels -- and to tell you the turth I think the truck looks a lot better. Can the Pilot really handle 20 inch wheels and still have a good ride?
In the California mountains you can often avoid installing chains in the winter if you are driiving a 4WD/AWD vehicle w proper tires. It can be very unpleasant to install/remove chains in the wee hours of the morning, in just the weather where they are required - (freezing temp's., snowing).
AWD can also be helpful if you are towing a boat or trailer.
Basically, if you're just a city slicker who likes the room and sitting up higher, I'd opt for the 2WD. Having AWD is definitely more useful in inclement weather.
The original scheduled date to produce the '06 Pilot was reported to be Aug. 29. Considering build time and distribution throughout the country, it would generally be weeks before there would be any realistic selecton. Also, since the production plant is in Alabama, the question becomes whether or not the supply chain of all necessary parts to manufacture the vehicle has been interrupted in any way due to the disaster just south of the assembly plant along the Gulf coast. While the plant itself is north of the disaster, the source of the parts is my question. I have not seen any news regarding this yet and I have been closely watching for any information. If any one knows more about this, please post it here as soon as possible. Thanks.
I spoke to somebody at Honda America last week, she told me production had started and their release date for the Pilot is Sept14 or 15th. This is the date they will officially release some information on the unit. The 2006 Honda Accord info was released last week but the car is not expected in showrooms for a few weeks according to my local honda dealer. The same will probably be true for the Pilot, she gave me a number of approx 19/25 for the pilot with VCM nothing firm yet. I asked her for more info, she would not tell me more for competitive reasons. It took them 1 week to return my call. That's all I have !
What the **** Honda is thinking about by not putting Stability Control and Braking Assist as standard feature across the board, while eagerly changing how the wheel looks like?
Your right. There is no way Honda should not include VSA on all Pilots. They made it standard on the CR-V for 2005 so I just can't believe they would not add it to the much more expensive Pilot. It makes no sense
Actually, the Accord is trickling in to some dealers - someone on another board bought an '06 Accord today. My local dealer has probabaly 15 '05 Pilots on his lot - might be time for a deal.
I got an '06 Pilot brochure today -it states that VSA and Brake Assist are now standard across the entire Pilot line - LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L RES, EX-L Navi.
So everyone can take a deep breath and calm down now.
Since you got the 2006 Pilot brochure, is there any way you can take pics or scan the brochure? Like the interior of the car i am really looking forward to the interior and like any new features?
Please!!
That would be really appreciated not just by me but from all of us!
Curb weight on the EX-L 4WD is 4450, up just about 20 lbs. GVWR won't hit 6,000 lbs
Sorry -have no way to scan. Interior looks basically identical to '05. One new color is added - Amazon Green.
Production started 8/24, so will be arriving soon.
Here are the highlights for '06:
• 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 engine on 4WD models (244 horsepower @ 5600 rpm and 240 lb-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm) • 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine on 2WD models (244 horsepower @ 5750 rpm and 240 lb-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm) • New Maintenance Minder system standard • Standard 3-row curtain airbags on all trim levels • Updated exterior badges added to 4WD models • Fog lights added to EX and EX-L trim levels • New sporty wheel designs featured on LX and EX trim levels • New rear camera integrated into vehicles equipped with satellite-linked navigation systems • New 7” navigation screen • All-new two-wheel drive trim level added with Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and system Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system • Active Engine Control Mount (ACM) system standard on vehicles with VCM technology • Revised taillight and headlight designs • XM® Satellite Radio added to EX-L • New 9” RES system with integrated remote, previously available only in combination with a navigation system • New exterior color: Amazon Green Metallic
It does look official. VCM is available on the 2WD and NOT on the 4WD. That's a tough choice. Since we can't have both, I'm wondering which feature is more important . . . the better traction of 4WD or the slightly better MPG?
I'd say if your driving is primarily highway, VCM might make sense. If it's city, the 1 MPG gain isn't a big deal - you can acheive that by making sure your tires are properly inflated! I read somewhere 80% of Americans could get better mpg just by changing driving habits - no fast acceleration, slowing down 5 mpg on highways, not letting their car idle too long, etc.
VCM is also one more system that can potentially break, costing $$ to fix. Just some things to consider.
Thanks for the update on the 2006 Pilot. My wife and I are interested in the EX-L RES (4WD). My understanding is VCM will not be offered on the 4WD version???
Also, any mention of the leather interior being upgraded??? Did they increase the tire size and change the brand of tire???
vrm, I was able to get a brochure this morning, and VCM appears to be standard on the 2WD in all versions. Also, I noticed the white exterior comes with an "olive" interior. That could be ugly. Pictures show the rear lights are changed, but same shape, utilizing a clear cover. The available Satellite-Linked Nav has lots of voice recognition, off-road tracking, and rearview camera. HERE ARE THE EPA MPG RATINGS: 2WD (with VCM, of course) = 18/24. 4WD (no VCM) = 17/22. Too bad there's no hybrid yet. Maybe in the true redesign due in a couple more years. Also, it appears that the DVD rear-entertainment can NOT be ordered in combination with the navigation, just like last year. You still have to choose. I would suggest getting the navigation and adding an aftermarket entertainment system. There are some good ones out there, and it's better to have the navigation built in. That's just my opinion, of course. That's it for now. Hope that's helpful.
buckeye83, sorry if I wasn't clear enough. There is NO VCM on the AWD, period, no matter what. Also, the EPA figures I posted earlier were 2006 figures for the AWD w/ VCM and 2005 figures for the AWD. There were no official 2006 AWD EPA figures at the time the brochure was printed, but Honda is expecting them to be the same. That is probably correct, but we will see. To the best of my knowledge, the pricing has not been announced yet. I'll let you know as soon as I do. Someone else may get that posted first. Let's stay on the lookout for that. Does that help?
Sorry, I messed up the EPA figures on the last post. I showed the the 2WD with VCM as AWD. And, as I indicated, there is NO VCM on AWD. So, here it is again and I'll proof read this before I post it this time. The 2WD (always with VCM) is rated at 18/24. This is a 2006 rating. The AWD (never with VCM) is rated at 17/22, but this is still the 2005 rating that honda is showing. Now THAT should do it!
Sorry if someone has already caught this and posted it, but on Honda's website in the 2006 Odyssey Overview, it says that ALL of its 2006 vehicles will have a 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty.
Good point. But the main warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles. Here's the actual wording according to Honda on an '06 Honda brochure . . ."All 2006 Honda vehicles - and any Genuine Honda accessories installed at time of purchase - are covered by the 3-year/36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. Plus, Honda cars and trucks are covered by a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, too."
a question, went to buy Honda Pilot EX, put the deposit to reserve a car, wrote the contract w/a specific vehicle w/bin number, but when I went to pick up a car, the agent told me that by mistake, another agent sold that specific car that I reserved w/deposit, and they offered me another one w/exact same model, inspected car, had a small dent on passenger side, and the dealership called the dent specialist and repaired the dent (now, can't see any dent), but would you take the car if this is your case? in your opinion, any defect/problem for the 2nd car they offered? didn't understand such a big dealer can make a mistake of selling the car which was reserved by someone who paid initial deposit. what you recommend to take that car or not? thanks.
If it is exactly what you originally wanted in terms of color/features, etc., and the dent repair is fully guaranteed (you already said you can't see it) for as long as you own the car, or some other reasonable time, then it sounds like you would be getting what you wanted all along. So, what's wrong with that? It's too bad that the internal system in the dealership allowed for that kind of mistake. If it somehow bothers you, then either don't take that vehicle, or ask for some reasonable compensation for what they put you through. If you're feeling OK about it, then drive it home. Purchasing a vehicle is significant enough that you should feel good about the experience.
Anyone got a feel for how SUV's are selling? I noticed that GM and some other dealers are extending employee pricing on '06. This affects Pilot sales, whether the dealerships will recognize it is the question. Honda isn't exactly as cash strapped as GM. My guess is that given the timing of a 30% increase in gas with the Labor day sales, most dealers will hear the sounds of crickets. Best price I can get on a 05 EX-L with DVD is 29,600 (fees included). I am gambling that you can get 06 for the same price. If anyone has a real world quote for same model in mid atlantic area it would be greatly appreciated.
I just bought a new Pilot EX yesterday and was driving at a highway. I didn't notice during test drive, but when I was driving on highway, it seems the engine makes louder noise than before, also I noticed the window seems shaky when a car passes by very quickly on highway. I didn't even play CD during driving and I had to talk to my friend w/higher voice since the inside car noise was pretty loud. do you guys have the same problem? do you guys feel that Pilot is not quiet as other mid-size sedan especially on highways? or is there any problem w/my car? 2nd Q: did you notice that the internal parts of the car is shown a lot from the rear view when you look at the car from back comparing to other SUVs? (where the gas ignition, spare tires, etc.) thanks!
The 06 Pilot brochure is available at the dealers. The tire size is P235/70 R16 (104S). Atleast in the photos the front and back lights and the grill looks better than the 05's. I also noticed change in the speed/rpm/gas/temp panel setup.
First, I suspect what happened is that someone was going to buy the car with the small dent off the lot, saw it, and started to balk on the deal. So the salesman scoured the lot for another car with the same equipment, and to close the sale, sold your car. This sort of crap happens all the time at dealerships - they will do almost anything not to lose a sale and since you had been waiting and had a deposit down, they figured you'd be much less likely to walk on the small dent issue than the guy in the showroom..
Having said this, if I understand you correctly, they are now supplying you a car with the exact equipment you want, just a different VIN. Making small repairs like a dent pull is common in the car business - I think the guideline is that the dealers don't even have to disclose that a car has been damaged and repaired up to $750 in repair cost, or something like this. So if you truly can't see the repair and the car is otherwise identical to the one you were going to buy, I don't see any reason not to take it.
If you're been inconvenienced by the repair, I think asking for a small consideration is justified. Providing the extended warranty at low or no cost would seem to be reasonable
If this bothers you in any way and you have another dealership around, you could just walk and get your deposit back. They are in clear breach of contract and they'd likely give your deposit back easily. This sort of thing might leave me with a bad taste in my mouth - it all depends on how they have handled it and how I otherwise felt about the dealership.
I picked up a new brochure from the dealer on Saturday. The leather is non-perforated and they have it pleated in several places (probably to address complaints on sagging). My dealer had a couple set to arrive in two weeks, so I'll go back and have a look and test drive (though the test drive is kind of going through the motions since there are no engineering changes to the 06 that affect the ride or drive). No updates to the website yet as they are still running their 2005 closeout sales. I would expect them to change add the online brochures very soon. BTW, the dealer still did not have an Accessory brochure for the Pilot.
What were the residuals on the 05 for a 3yr/12k lease.?They are using 58% for the 05 now but I am waiting for the 06's. Also, I am turning in an Acura, other than the waived deposit, no disposition, and $1500 damage waiver, is there anything else as far as loyalty incentives? I heard reducing the money factor slightly but Honda Finance denies this. Any help is appreciated.
I read through the discussions but I am still not clear about the following. :confuse:
1) Is Sep 15 the date for the release of new 06 pilots? If so, should we sign up somewhere to get them? If so, how do you do that? (I called a dealer and he was not budging from pushing me a current one and would not want to talk about the waiting list.)
2) Do, we have to pay premium to get the cars? Will it be MSRP or the current Edmunds '05 pilot TMV? I am wondering how much premium and if it is really worth as I feel that premium is worth spent on a hybrid SUV since there is also line but atleast you get 40+% more mileage on a toyota hyb suv.
Any insights from folks experienced (especially on such prior such waitlisted purchases, like Odyssey) would be very helpful.. :confuse:

now the question is changing in a way that changes the results.
its as simple as that.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
What is the invoice price for the 2006 Pilot ? Do all dealers pay the same invoice price ?
Thanks

EX (or EX-L) 2WD W/ NAV?
Just wondering.
I live in the south (not the Gulf Coast) and AWD isn't necessary at all, but I'd like the NAV.
