Hi Ray. Most manufacturers' official advertised lease payments leave a little meat on the bone so to speak. It makes sense if one thinks about it. Dealers would be pretty annoyed if automakers advertised the skinniest possible deals.

Savvy consumers who are in an area that has a decent level of competition are usually able to beat the selling prices that were used to calculate manufacturers' advertised payments.

Switching from the 10,000 mileage allowance that BMW uses for its advertised payments to 15,000 miles per year will result in a 3% reduction in the residual value that is used to calculate your vehicle's payment. On a lease of this car, switching from 10k to 15k would likely result in an increase of roughly $30 per month or so.

I asked the dealer for the Money Factor and Residual Percenage and here is what I was provided for a 2011 328i.

    MF = 0.0027 (6.48%)
    Residual = 60%

Are these typical numbers for a 2011 BMW?
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Hi nicedeal (appropriate name BTW). I would be happy to use BMW Financial Services' actual lease program to work up a sample lease payment on the exact car that you are interested in for you. However, in order for me to do so I need you to provide me with its full MSRP and approximate selling price (or at least its MSRP and invoice price). You can find those numbers over in the New Vehicle Pricing section of this site.

Even without crunching any numbers I can tell you that on a zero down lease, which is what you should do, this car's payment is going to be well over $300 per month after tax is added in.

Hi smoot1. BMW is not providing any lease support on the 2011 328i yet. As a result, if you were to lease one through BMW Financial Services this month, you would have to use its standard lease money factor. BMW FS buy rate standard factor varies by region, but the .00270 that you were quoted looks about right. The 60% residual value is right in line with BMW FS' 36 month, 12k resid.

I currently have a 2008 BMW 335i coupe with only option is sports package. I did it through euro delivery and my payment is $583 with tax.

I want to lease a 2011 335iS with the only option upgraded stereo. I can get it for $750-1000 over euro invoice. I think the msrp is like $51,900 and euro invoice is in the range of $44,000 (I think) Can anyone give me an estimated lease payment so I know if I can afford it. I need 3 year lease with 12,000 miles per year.

2000se, I think your getting a really good deal. The dealership is actually making $60 from your deal which is quite nice for you! What you need to include in your calculation is the Maco/Training fee which is a legitimate fee. (maco=400, training=200; or the other way around, cant remember exactly). You need to add that to invoice to get the true cost of the car. I have heard that some people had gotten away without paying that, but it is very rare; specially on a newly ordered car! Acquisition fee is $725 (what BMW chargers the dealer) but the dealer is allowed to mark it up. Doc fee is reasonable so even though they marked up your acquisition fee you made your self a great deal!

I'm negotiating a similar car as well (335d) around the same options as yours is. Can you tell me what dealership you got this deal from? Thanks

I live in California and got quoted $2000 at signing and $617/mo (with taxes included) for a 36mo, 15K/yr lease on a 2010 BMW 328i coupe with the following:

    - titanium silver with black interior
    - sports package
    - premium
    - navi
    - ipod/usb adaptor
    - automatic transmission

Is this a good deal or no?

Looking to see if I am getting the best deal possible. I had four local dealers providing me quotes online and here is the best quote I got on a 2011 328i with the premium package, leather, navigation, heated seats, xenon headlights, comfort access, etc.

    MSRP: 42,950
    Selling Price: 40,400

    36 month lease
    12,000 miles per year
    62% residual
    .00255 factor
    Fees only down = $2,527.34
    Base Payment = $553.45 + tax
    Total Payment = $599.39

The dealer will also reduce my payments if the BMWFS rates improve before I get the car in July. Some quotes started well over $700 per month.

    hey thanks Car Man!!

Oops I just saw your reply!! well i spoke to a bunch of dealers and one said i could get the 328i 4 door sedan, silver, with premium package only at which msrps at about 37,500 for 32,800..

so if i lease at 12 th miles a year, and i know i shouldn't put down ideally but for me may be better bc i'd really like lower monthlies- if i want to get the monthlies in the lowest 300s as possible how much would i have to put at drive off (the least i can of course)?

and also he mentioned that i can do BMW select to finance for 5 yrs at 2.9% so drive off about 3250 and then monthly at 370 with tax and then a residual of about 37% at the end of 5 yrs at 14 th...

so i am a bit confused and stressed over what to do..
last thing another dealer may have cars that u have to assume the lease with about 3000 miles on them to lease at say 4 th down and 300 something a month

thannnnnnnnnks for ur help!!!!! a possible stressed over this seeking nice deal human!!

Right now here is what I have in place to think about before Saturday:

    Upgraded BMW Performance 335i

    MSRP $61,200
    Negotiated Price $52,600

    Total Down: $5000

    Monthly Payment: $ 699.99

Please let me know if this all makes sense and is a good deal.

Sounds high to me. I test drove a new 2010 335i with ZMP, ZPP, ZCW, Auto, Logic 7, Full Performance Package, Alarm and they were going to add Sirius Radio at Tomkinson BMW, Ft. Wayne, IN, MSRP $58,500. Final deal was going to be 4k down and $535/month OTD on 36 month 10K miles. They still have it if you are interested. Black Sapphire/Oyster.

Dealers are having hard time selling Performance Package equipped cars and are getting good incentives from BMW to get rid of them. Good Luck!

Hey nicedeal. Thanks for the pricing info, let's crunch some numbers and see what we come up with.

According to my calculations, if you were to lease a 2010 BMW 328i that has an MSRP of $37,500 and a selling price of $32,800 through BMW Financial Services right now for 36 months with 12,000 miles per year, your zero down, pre-tax monthly payment would be around $450.

In order to get down to the $300 per month that you're looking for, you would have to make a whopping $5,000 capitalized cost reduction, which again I strongly advise against doing. And this is only to get to $300 before sales tax is added in.

Hi saranr. BMW Financial Services' May buy rate lease money factor and residual value for a 36 month lease of a 2010 BMW 328xi with 10,000 miles per year are .00170 and 55%, respectively.

The numbers for an otherwise identical lease of a 2010 335xi are .00150 and 57%.

The special money factor reduction for loyal customers is no longer available. They changed what it's called, but the $2,500 is still available on leases of these models.

Hi cdv1. Let me begin by saying that in my opinion $3,500 is way too much money to put down on a lease. Consumers who make large down payments when leasing risk losing part or all of that money if their vehicle is totaled in an accident or stolen and never recovered. It's much safer to go with no cap cost reduction.

The dealer invoice price of the car that you're interested in is probably roughly $37,000. If one subtracts the $2,500 dealer cash that is available on the 3 Series in May from that it drops to around $34,500. So you're at right round $1,000 over invoice, which isn't bad. If you are in an area that has a decent level of competition and you do some comparison shopping you may be able to eventually knock another $500 or so off of this car's price.

Make sure that the dealer that you're working with uses BMW Financial Services' current buy rate lease money factor of .00170 to calculate your car's payment.

    42 months?
    48 monhts?

I am shopping the 328 and A4 wagons and will probably lease. I am trying to find the money factor and residuals for a 2010 328i wagon. 36 month, 10k and 12k/ year. Carman reports in this subthread that BMW has no deals now on 328i lease rates and that the rates .00270 and 60% are probably the current. Is this also true for the wagon?

BMW has a special offer now, with what appears to be a decent deal given the lousy MF: $3000 down, $500 security deposit, with $459/month. In negotiating, I am trying to decide whether to just try to have them chop money off the down payment (e.g. $2500 dealer cash?) and have the rest go into the security deposit, thus paying nothing down. Or, just negotiate separate from the offer and start with cap cost and then use their exising MF and residual. Any thoughts are appreciated. BTW, the A4 has a much lower MF but the 328i has a much higher residual. Also any recommendations on L.A. to SB dealers are welcome. (Sorry but I am one of those strange guys who thinks both cars are great!)

I am looking at leasing a 2010 M3 convertible in Dallas, Texas.

I was quoted a .00190 money factor and 48% residual value on a 10,000 mile/year, 36-month lease through BMW Financial. Does this sound right?

Separate question -- I was thinking about putting a sizable chunk of money down (maybe $10,000) to lower my monthly lease payments, but after reading other posts, it doesn't sound like that's a good idea. ??

    Thanks!!

Hi, I just got some lease numbers from my dealer in CA and I wanted to see if anyone thought it was a good deal or if I should walk away.

    2011 BMW 335i coupe
    Saph. Black/Black Dakota
Premium, Sport, Harmon Kardon, Nav, 6speed AT
    MSRP: $52725
    Selling Price: $49464
    Money Factor: .00265
They are paying off my other lease, total of $2650.

    $3000 Drive
    36 mo / 15k
    855.72 including taxes.

I think he said without the payoff of the other lease it would be
    $3000 Drive
    36 mo / 15k
    770 including taxes

I'm not sure if this is a good deal or if I should wait until the money factor decreases? Does anyone think it will decrease significantly for the June numbers?

    Thanks.

  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Hi Hugo. I personally go through the leasing boards alphabetically. I believe that I answered the specific questions that you had about leasing those Volkswagen models some time last week.

I wouldn't necessarily look at the lack of traffic in the Jetta and Tiguan discussions as an indictment of those vehicles. Both are very nice.

The BMW discussions always see to have a higher level of traffic than a number of other brands' discussions for a couple of reasons. One, BMW's lease penetration rate is very high...much higher than most other automakers. Probably half of the people who get new BMWs lease them.

Another reason may have to do with the type of buyer that BMWs attract. I have no idea if this is the case or not, but they may be more inclined to use the web to research their purchase then the buyers of other brands.

Hi rfgf. Through June 30th, BMW Financial Services' buy rate lease money factor and residual value for a 36 month lease of a 2011 335xi Sedan with 15,000 miles per year are .00230 and 58%, respectively.

The numbers for an otherwise identical 42 month lease are .00230 and 49%.

I don't believe that BMW is currently providing any sort of support on 48 month leases. This isn't a big deal though because BMW's special money factors on the '11 3-Series aren't that great anyhow. If you want to lease one for 48 months, you will have to use its standard money factor. The last time I checked, its buy rate standard factor was around .00240 or so.

BMW FS' current 48 month, 15,000 mile per year residual value for this car is 40%.

Hi edwardsf. According to the latest information that I have seen, through the end of June, BMW Financial Services' current buy rate lease money factor and residual value for a 36 month lease of a 2010 328i Wagon with 12,000 miles per year are .00230 and 58%, respectively.

The residual value for a lease of this vehicle with only 10,000 miles per year is 1% higher.

To me, the easiest way to get a good deal on a leased vehicle is to shop around for the lowest possible selling price and then have the dealer that you decide to go with calculate your vehicle's monthly payment using its buy rate lease money factor.

Hi tm335. The money factor that you wee quoted is definitely too high. According to the latest information that I have seen, through the end of June BMW Financial Services' buy rate lease money factor and residual value for a 36 month lease of a 2010 M3 Convertible with 10,000 miles per year are .00135 and 48%, respectively.

You definitely should not make a large down payment on your lease. Consumers who do so risk losing part or all of the money that they put down if their vehicle is totaled in an accident or stolen and never recovered. Even though it means that your monthly payment will be higher, you will be much safer if you keep the money in the bank and go with a zero down lease.

Hello Fred. Do you know what selling price the dealer is trying to charge you for this car? I ask because that is one of the most important numbers to focus on when negotiating a lease. The selling prices of leased vehicles are negotiable, just as if you were paying cash for or financing them. Without the selling price, it is difficult to tell if there is any room left to negotiate. Let us know what this number is and I'm sure that either myself or another knowledgeable community member will gladly let you know what they think.
