I don't get the claims that leasing "pays off" vs buying when the residual on XC90's is in the low 50% range. Go check the used car market, you'd be hard pressed to get a clean low mile XC90 for anything close to 50% of its original $60K or so MSRP. ($30K). Most are upper $30's. Seems like that means you lose on a lease, especially as you get no benefit from a 4th year of warranty even though you're pretty much proof from repair costs. You're also getting rock bottom "wholesale" or "trade in" value, no matter how clean your example is.
And for those of us who pay cash, our cost of funds is rarely over 1% after taxes as there is no "safe" 3 year return much above that these days. It strikes me as a rationale to get a more expensive vehicle than you can really afford, keeping you on a debt treadmill for life. Fine if you keep your job, but what about retirement and downturns in the economy?

I had 2 paid off cars for a long time (still have 1) until the transmission developed issues. The cost of fixing the trans, and other wear items that follow soon would dwarf a lease payment and peace of mind of a new vehicle under warranty. Besides at the time of my last lease interest rates were so low it was practically free money. And now with something like a Volvo still offering a MF eqv of ~2% while 3yr treasury is yielding 2.65%; I say take the lease and plunk down your cash into a risk free rate that's 0.65% above your cost of funds.

Having said that I do agree that we need to keep spending on stuff like this close to home base so if needed you can quickly close out of expenses.

Not sure where you're looking.......You can get a 3 year CD with a 2% APY, and treasuries are higher than that.

Looks like I just need to get the acquisition fee down
