The whole Mercur project was a disaster. The XR4ti's were junk and the Scorpios weren't much better.
I had the opportunity to drive ab XR4ti, it was a fun car to drive. The drive made me want one, but alas they didn't make then long enough for me to buy one as my, then, current car was somewhat new.
I thought the Scorpios were Audis (or am I thinking something else?)

Richard and I have a deal. If he kills himself smoking he leaves me his fortune. If it's something else then his nieces and nephews get it. Don't tell him. We haven't worked out the details.
When you go to the Cubs game - take the train! You do NOT want to park near Wrigley. You do, however, definitely want to go to the game.
The remember wanting a Merkur when they first came out. Basically it was hoping that we finally caught on that they make nice cars in Europe. Sadly that wasn't a good example and, as has already been said, The LM dealers didn't know how to sell them.

The potty training is worse than working on the house.
Richard, are you using crate training? Put Coco in his (her?) crate overnight, and during the day if you can't watch him every minute. He is old enough that he won't want to soil where he sleeps. Then get him outside first thing in the morning. Personally I carried my dogs when they were puppies for the first week or two so their little feet didn't even touch ground until they were outside.
When they were old enough to have a little more control, I walked them (on leash), but same principal - outside immediately, first thing in the morning.
Little puppies need to go outside every hour. Coco probably should be able to go about two hours now.
The crate should be a warm, cozy place where Coco feels comfortable. It's NOT jail. My dogs (both present ones, and several past ones) love their crates. It is a very helpful tool to teach your pup that he can indeed control his bladder overnight, as well as during the day as needed.
Good luck, hope you and Coco have every success with this important part of his training!
Honest ‘isell’, it has nothing to do with intelligence. It has everything to do with having the right reason to quit. I don’t want to come across as someone who has done the impossible because countless numbers of people have done it. One night I was about to run out to buy a pack but I sat down to read an article in the paper. Both of my sons were playing on the floor with their matchbox cars and their toy garage with the crank up elevator. That’s when it hit me that it would be nice to stick around for awhile.

>>Does anyone else remember the Cougar (Cat) that was ubiquitous in their commercials of that time period? The cat's growl was even part of their radio spots.
Yes indeed. I don't know if the cougar in the picture was the one who supplied the growl or not. We bought a 1987 Scorpio for my wife almost one year after they were introduced. In terms of overall performance it was quite similar to a BMW 525i. The interior was a bit more luxurious than other German cars of the period. My main gripe was that parts and maintenance tended to be more expensive than similar items for the 535is that I was driving. Ford also liked to sell complete "assemblies" rather than individual parts- which meant that when a driveshaft center bearing went bad you had to buy a new driveshaft, whereas BMW would sell you just the bearing. You've been retired less than a month and your memory is fading that quickly? Michael is correct. We've been down this road before. You're the one who "advised" me of the difficulty in removing the smoke smell from automobiles.
I make no excuses except to say that, genetically, it is more difficult for some people to quit smoking than others. I have a very bad addiction. My pulmonary specialist has been more worried that I would have a heart attack or stroke from trying to quit. I've done tons of research on this topic. I'm not about to promote smoking, but only 15 % of smokers get lung cancer. Most of the others die from smoking related diseases such as emphysema. After 50+ years of smoking a pack a day, my lungs are clear. I've been very blessed. Considering that 22% of the American population smokes, we get less respect and more criticism than the common drunk. Restaurants no longer allow smoking, but they will allow people to drink alcohol to excess which is also not healthy. I find something wrong with this picture. Then again, try telling politicians that they can't have their drinks. These are the same people who pass laws regarding smoking.
Snake, I have to correct you on one thing. I have found three hotels in downtown Chicago which have smoking rooms...Hyatt Regency, Holiday Inn, and River Hotel. I'm booked into all three until I decide about Saturday night---the one night I'm having trouble booking.
GG, thanks for the tip on the Holiday Inn. They have better rates---$181 for Sunday night and $159 for the week nights. They're on Wabash, just off of Michigan Avenue. I'm on a waiting list for Saturday night.
Jmonroe, I never claimed to be smart---just claimed to be a smart a--. Fortunately, I have lived to see my nephew and niece grow to adulthood. Now, I am watching my nephew's two boys grow up---ages 12 and 13. I am much more blessed than I deserve. I'm glad that you were able to quit smoking. It makes life much more pleasant for all concerned.
Fezo, we do have that deal but you won't get much. As I told my nephew, I'm planning on spending it. Still, I do favor you because your luck is about as bad as mine.
Biencar, I agree with you about the crate training. So does our vet. I think that it would be much easier, but my wife is opposed to it. She's doing it her way which I think is the hard way. Still, Coco means so much to her that I am bowing to her wishes.
Too bad you cannot crate train. I have done that with my dogs and since they are a denning animal, it becomes their place of refuge. If I tell my Brit to go to her room, she immediately heads for the crate. It is her bedroom even with the door open. It is truly her space. Now that she is 8 years old, we give her the run of the house while we are gone but usually when we get home she is in her room.
As snakeweasel mentioned the VW Corrado came later. I don't know if it was the replacement for the Scirocco, but neither were easy to spell.
Was the Audi equivalent of the Scirocco the Audi Coupe Quattro? I know very little about them other than I remember seeing some on the street in the late 80s and they looked like the Scirocco. The Corrado emerged in the early 90s, didn't it?
I'm still more interested in whether Richard has purchased the white shoes and white belt and, if not, perhaps that's why he never worked a deal on the Grand Marquis . Does a white on white ensemble make him a suitable candidate for a new Explorer now that the Mercury Grand Marquis will slip into history or would something else better fit his image? I'm seeing more and more folks driving golf carts on the roads near me. In fairness, I live about a mile from a course, but these folks are on streets and roads not on the course. For some reason my retriever really dislikes the carts.
Here is a crate story for you. We have an 11 month old half poodle and half yorkie that has been crate trained since we got her at about 2 months old. Her name is Daisy and she is one great little dog. When she was about 6 months old we put her in her crate and went out to run a few errands. We keep a small rug draped over the top of her crate to make it cozy for her.
When we returned a couple of hours later we opened her door and out waltzes Rambo, our 19 year old black tom cat, with Daisy following close behind. The two of them had spend 2 hours cooped up together. Neither one of them was the least bit agitated or upset so the whole thing was sort of a ho hum affair. They have always been good friends and Daisy cleans his ears on a regular basis. Now we always check her crate to see if Rambo is dozing inside.
I too am a smoker and like you my lungs are clear and while my Dr would like me to quit she did convince me to try an electronic cigarette which thus far I have found to be a nice alternative and allows me to smoke in public and my car without offending anyone or posing any health risks to others.
Planning on spending it - good plan! We'll all be happy to find nice creative ways to assist you on that.
You could start by buying a nice car and having it shipped to me....
Actually what has been my car emergency is turning into something less dire. My second daughter s now driving the Celica with the roof that can't come down. She likes it better than the van. I'm driving the van and am thinking about staying in that holding pattern until the fall and finding a nice deal on a used Solara convertible at that point. If someone wants to give me a deal I can't refuse in the meantime, in the words of Ross Perot, "I'm all ears."
BTW - the reason they'll let people drink but not smoke in public places is because the alcohol has no effect on the people around the person drinking it.
That said I'm not saying that all those laws are particularly fair.

No effect? Have you ever been around an obnoxious drunk?
Richard, here's a plan to reduce smoking from a fellow smoker.
Snus, in the cigarette store with labels like Marlboro, Winston, etc.
Nicotine delivery pouches that don't cause you to have to spit or swallow like snuff. They work! Providing 3 to 4 hours without lighting up and no anxiety. 60 Minutes did a piece finding them less harmful to you and less annoying to others.
No effect? Have you ever been around an obnoxious drunk?
I KNEW that was coming!
At least you can get away from an obnoxious drunk.
A long time ago I was playing bass in a country rock band. Because I'm normally a guitar guy and had just sold off my bass I had to get another. Knowing we would be playing for, yes, obnoxious drunks at time I got a solid body one figuring if I had to take somebody out with it I could still play it afterward. It never came to that but I did play behind chicken wire once which was certainly an experience.

"I did play behind chicken wire once which was certainly an experience"
fezo....reminds me of the Blues Brothers scene where they end up playing "Rawhide".
Richard....I've stayed at that Holiday Inn Express. Rooms aren't real big. But, it's clean, close to everything, and has a relatively recent update. Nothing to dislike, unless you're looking for a fancy hotel bar or restaurant on premises.
While I've been known to lite up a Macanudo on occasion, I wouldn't let a hotel's policy determine whether I stayed there or not. None of them allow cigars, regardless of locale. So, I save them for the golf course, or after a particularly grueling week sitting on my deck.
As such, I'm not one to preach, judge, nor condemn. There's more than one person who thinks because I have a bourbon on the rocks every once in a while that I'm headed for a date with Beelzebub.
Dan, I appreciate your kind words. I never light up in front of non-smokers. I can dine with friends or have guests in my home for up to four hours without a cigarette. At that point, I politely excuse myself and exit to the out of doors. Also, I take a portable ash tray with me. I don't care to leave cigarette butts on the lawns or premises of others. While I have some of my father's rough edges, my mother insisted on teaching me her code of what it means to be a Southern gentleman. I still rise when a lady enters the room, and I still open the car door for my wife. Mother's training wasn't totally wasted; neither was my father's. He taught me to take up for myself and to recognize a good bourbon from a cheap whiskey. :P
As much as I love the Grand Marquis, I would have to draw the line on wearing the white shoes and white belt. I do own a white summer suit and a Panama hat. IMHO, those two items should make the sale or purchase of a Mercury possible. :P
GG, the Holiday Inn Express will be fine. They did call yesterday and gave me Saturday night for $235. The other days are $181 and then $159 for the duration. That's reasonable compared to the others. When my wife and sister finish their shopping, I imagine that I will be very happy that we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express.
I saw them at a 7-11 store the other day for just under 8.00 a pack. Maybe we just pay a lot of extra taxes here.
I do remember in the late 60's the guy who owned the cigarette machine (remember those?) at the gas station where I worked came in one day and raised the price from 35 cents to 50 cents.
The owner of the station told him.." Nobody is going to pay 50 cents for a pack of smokes!"
People griped and paid the price.
I'm pretty active on Classmates.com. I sold the guy who started Classmates several cars and consider him a friend. If you want to see some bad spelling, I'm embarassed at some of my classmates. Not people my age but people in the classes 10-15 years behind mine.
