Well, really every day is a bonus no matter what but I'm still planning to live to be 100. I'll be broke but what the hey.

Things don't look so bad on the car. My car insurance covers with a $500 deductible and American Express is picking up the deductible. Just a lot of paperwork.

They kept asking what year the car was so I finally had to look it up. It's a 2010 made in October of 2009 in Ohio by the UAW. Has a 6 cyl. and, of course, a scatched and dented right rear bumper....

OK, you've inspired me. I'm long overdue for a physical and there is one "test" I've never had that I suppose I should schedule.

Time to quit taking my good health for granted.

Do NOT screw around when it comes to prostate tests. One of my best friends got a high PSA reading and did all sorts of alternative medicine things to bring the number down which it did. Unfortunately that only masked the problem which was a particularly aggressive form of prostate cancer. He's gone. He was only 70. I feel it all the more right now because I am in Florida and any time I'd come down we'd get together and talk politics, baseball and life endlessly. I really don't need to be losing any more friends. Take care of yourselves!

I'm so glad that you are going to have that physical and THAT test. As Fezo says, don't mess around here. As the original poster here, you need to stay in good shape. I only stayed here in the beginning because of you and Mack. Besides, you're the only grumpy friend that I have. (Grin)

any guy who pays up a debt due and promptly like that, should be allowed to shake off the 'idiot' label.

See if you still think that way when I tell you what happened. I got the rental car about 15 minutes earlier, went to the hotel and went front first into a parking space.
This "idiot" tried to back a big old rusty and falling apart pick up truck into the space next to us and we hit our tailight...to every ones surprise.

I don't think he would have left a note or stayed if we weren't right there in the car. Any person with a bonified license should have been able to back into that space without hitting the other vehicle.

If not for that, and the fact he was ready to leave until he saw we were in the vehicle, I wouldn't have called him an idiot...and I don't use that term to describe someone very often. Also, it kind of puts a damper on your holiday, until it gets sorted out.

Sounds good, but it is still about $5k a year. I guess I am better off paying for prescriptions, unless they get to be too much. I don't think our plan covers regualar prescriptions, unless they are absolutely necessary, or you are over 65 and they are on the list.

You're right driver, as the plot thickened, your labeling of him was well suited indeed. I too reserve 'idiot' for those truly deserved of the term. That way it never loses it's verve, hahaha.
And ya, carpy way to get started. Thank goodness you were right there. I wonder if he learned anything? Hopefully..

"gg - if you are just coming off a women's novel Water for Elephants is not what you want. It's got a lot of romance in it."

    GG--

I second Fezo's evaluation. While WFE is a respectable novel (my wife and her girlfriends like it) it's not exactly a Y chromosome must-read. As was mentioned the circus and veterinary aspects are entertaining, but it's a bit like James Herriot hangs out in The Bridges of Madison County.

If, as a counterpoint, you want some "testosterone" based fare I would suggest Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy. Real men, real violent and really well written. By the way, the first book in the trilogy, All The Pretty Horses was really badly mangled as a feature film so don't let that dissuade you. There's a knife fight in the third novel (which pulls characters together from the first two books in the series) that's as spine-chilling and heart-stopping as good literature gets.

McCarthy's recent work is getting more respectable film treatment like No Country for Old Men and The Road, both of which have retained the feel and character of the novels.

Being the ultimate cheapskate I have as a hobby looking for inexpensive, good running cars for my kids and relatives. From time to time I've been able to purchase some fairly nice basic transportation for around $1000.

Ever since cash for clunkers came along I have seen a definite decline in the calibre of cheap beater cars. What used to cost $500-$1000 now costs $2000 and the really cheap stuff around $1000 is now just scrap waiting to be hauled away. I just saw a Craigslist ad for a Neon that went something like: "Nice running car with 178,000 miles which is a little loud because the exhaust fell off. Needs nothing except the rear door is broken and tied shut."

I don't expect a beater to be without issues but come on. At 180K miles there aren't too many Hondas that would be worth $1000 let alone a Neon. I wonder if people are pricing these cars with the expectation of giving up half the price or did they all read the same book on how to be a super-duper used car saleman? :confuse:

I'm beginning to think getting that nice Caddy for my son for $1200 was a fluke.

I saw a Lincoln Town Car (mid-'90s) parked down at the local bar 'n grill, today, with a sign on it for $1500... I'd bet $1200 would take it home...

Cormac McCarthy... I made the mistake of reading No Country for Old Men, right before going to see the movie... Giant surprise in the movie, that would have knocked me out, had I not known it was coming.... Good movie, but that ruined it for me... Haven't seen The Road, but read the book... pretty minimalist... I can see how it would be easy to make the movie faithful to it... but, didn't really make me want to go see it. I might have to read the trilogy, though.... sounds good.

Those big beasts seem to be the only bargains left as the little 4 bangers are being listed for crazy money. Case in point I just saw an ad for a 99 Civic with 158K miles for $1500. The only thing wrong was that the trunk was now sitting in the back seat as the result of an accident. ("but it's a Honda, dude!") :lemon:

I don't get a chance to read many books these days. When I start one I like to read for 4-8 without putting it down and I don't have that much time . I stick to science mags mostly.

My last book was "Overton Window" by Glenn Beck. Glen should stick to his non-fiction political stuff.

Chrysler must be having a tough go of it. Or at least the product has left their dealers to come up with something a little different to keep their heads above water.

Just saw ad from an enterprising dealer a couple hours north of me; advertising service financing. "Don't worry, we'll take care of all the paperwork. Get the needed repairs done now!" ......or something to that affect.

I suspect it is the same dealer that I've heard advertise miles out of town, saying they'll pay your hotel bill for an overnight stay if you come from out of town to buy.

GM should watch their butt too. You should see the number of 5 to 7 year old P/U's around here with the paint coming off down to bare metal in huge chunks, claiming "normal wear and tear" when owners complain.

Puts me in mind of back in 1990 when I went to battle with Ford to repaint (just the front hood even...I even offered to re and re the hood myself) my 88 F150 and their issue went down to the fake primer process they tried to eliminate. At least the metal remained covered even if it did look like the blazes. Happened on silver and blue trucks. I have boycotted Ford ever since because they failed to do the right thing. It wasn't complicated. They admitted only 5 months later to the masses (and painted their trucks for free) when a Cdn "dig around under the rug" type show called Market Place blew their sorry butts out of the water over it. I went back to Ford to give them the op to reimburse me the thousand bucks they ripped me off for to do exactly the same thing they did for all the other customers only 5 mo later when the masses pressed them to the wall. What did I do wrong? Nothing. All I did was complain earlier than the rest, and one lone voice wasn't threat enough to make them do the right and just thing. So I boycotted them. I've bought 5 or 6 new vehicles since then and most probably would have been Fords has they not burned me.

I wish so many more would boycott.

I have read most of McCarthy's books and he is one of my favorites. For all you guys who like to read I would highly recommend one of the electronic readers. I have had a kindle for 2 years and it is my favorite electronic gadget. Unbelievably convenient. You an carry an entire library anywhere you go. I paid about $350. for mine 2 years ago (a gift from my wife) but now they are around $130. I think.

I liked Water for Elephants, but I guess I must be secure about my manhood (ha ha).

I don't get the movie Country of Old Men, 2 hours of some guy being chased by a phsyco?

I do like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo now available in DVD. These books are amazing too. To be on topic, Lizbeth Salander, the main character is about 90 pounds but she can hack into any computers and she can outsmart big strong motorcycle guys and other thugs. Lizbeth drives an older maroon Honda Accord.

If I see people reading a book at the airport, 80% of the time it is a Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

    "...had they not burned me..."

I don't get how dealers and even entire companies are so short sighted...even when they don't have to be.

I bought a Dodge back in 1980 and within 9 months the paint started peeling from the sheet metal under the bumper. I asked for a repaint which would have been a cheap fix. No dice said the dealer.

Long story short after involving Chrysler and the Attorney General the dealer relented. As I was handing the keys and the arbitration order to the service manager he said: "Gee, we've been repainting these for the asking, you didn't have to go through all that."

I was so mad at that dealer that I've never considered walking in there again. 30 years and about a dozen cars later I haven't gone back.

Sometimes you just have to go "all in", throw caution to the wind, and let the chips fall where they may. Then stick the thing under the seat !!

I think I have about 80 books on mine right now and probably half of those were free. There, that ought to push you over the edge !!

You sound like my brother. He won't buy a digital camera because it might get stolen (also it is a little more complicated to use but he won't admit that part). If he takes pictures he uses a disposable camera. Then he has to wait 2 years to fill it up and then he doesn't remember what he has taken pictures of. Also, you don't know what picture you just took because it doesn't show up of course.

Then there is the problem of making extra copies to give to friends...can't just email copies. Some people just don't want to be in the 21st Century.

That would be true if he would spring for a scanner. If he doesn't know how to do an attachment he isn't going to be able to scan it and send it as an attachment.

He got a new computer and I asked him how he was going to move his address book to the new computer. He said, "What's an address book". When I explained what it was, he said, "Oh, I only send out replies".

fezo....gogi....driver....thanks for the recommendations. I do need to replenish some testosterone. The GF was just stating that reading "Eat, Pray, Love" had changed my behavior the last few weeks (according to her, for the better). We can't have that now, can we? :P

I'm about 1/2 way through "1776". Should be finished with it by Thanksgiving (tough read).

I'm stocking up on possible reads for the Christmas cruise. I'll add "Dragon Tatoo" book to the list of possibles.

I liked "No Country for Old Men" (movie). Matter of fact, I get something different out of it each time I watch it.

"The Road"? I know of some people who gave it their highest recommendation. But, I never was more depressed after seeing a movie as I was after I saw that one.

I am so ready for another Bond flick to be released.

Was putting a wax job on the Acura yesterday in preparation for winter (yes, I used Zaino). Usually I have "my guy" do it for me. Felt like doing it myself yesterday, though.

Anyway, noticed that even after 7 months of driving it, there's not one paint chip or scratch that I could find on the TL. Yes, I garage it. But still, I don't think I could say that about any car I've ever owned. Usually, it only takes a couple of weeks to get that rock chip or scratch on my new cars.

Is your brother much older than you? I have noticed that age has a lot to do with accepting new technology. My dad didn't even want to get a computer but finally broke down and got the most basic one available to do minor stuff and e-mail.

On the other hand me and she who must be obeyed went computer shopping yesterday. While I picked a less expensive model that was more than enough for what we wanted she wanted something much closer to the top of the line. She wanted high quality and enough power for anything we might do down the line.

Since you are stocking up for the cruise, and trying to return to your manly ways, might I suggest a recent purchase---The Strong Man by James Rosen. It's about John Mitchell and the secrets of Watergate. I'm a third finished and can't seem to put it down. Having lived through that era, I find the book very absorbing.

Though I haven't read it yet, I also purchased Cecil B. DeMille: A Life in Art. Being an old movie fan, I imagine that his experiences are really interesting.

I loved "No Country for Old Men"---a changing culture and the lost effort to adapt. Like you, I see more intricacies each time that I view it.

    Happy reading---Richard

I agree with you about the age factor. I just can't seem to keep up with technology---or the desire to learn it all. I purchased my wife a new Dell lap top with all of the bells and whistles---$1,800 worth of gadgets. She's worse than I am. She'll never use all of those things. We've told my nephew that we need some training. He uses every gadget available.

The kids designing all the new electronic toys need to be aware that the older generation (us old guys) need user friendly as well.

I mean making the screens more readable. Maybe some back lighting or more contrast. I don't want to put on my reading glasses every time the phone rings.

The last call I got on my new side slide cell phone (without my glasses on) went unanswered because intuitive it is Not! The talk button was not distinguishable from the myriad of other buttons. It quit ringing just as I was able to figure it out.

"She asked me to take a Niacin tablet (500 Mg. non-flush) after dinner each night for six months. Well, the six months was up last week. I had a blood test and the results were amazing."

    Richard--

I've been on slow release Niacin for at least three years. I take 500mg 2 x a day and it has helped. You'd think a fellow as active as me wouldn't have a cholesterol problem and my LDL is fine. Unfortunately my HDL stinks. Turns out that number is a product of exercise and genetics (thanks, dad). So unless I want to move into the gym I'm on a diet of Niacin. My does makes me flush occasionally, which is not pleasant.

Good luck with your prostate procedure. My father and father-in-law both had prostate cancer and surgery. My father even had to have follow up radiation, but is cancer free as far as I know and he's 81. My father-in-law was cancer free as well, but died from an unrelated botched minor surgery.

Given my family history I have the "exam" and PSA test yearly.

"Two trainers have told me that no matter what you do, there are some dogs who will resist forever."

    Richard--

I concur with the trainers. We have an almost 15 year old Basenji named ZuZu. She and I went through obedience school twice. She didn't flunk, but that's only because of grade inflation--or maybe it was to keep me paying tuition. ;) She is crate trained and will happily spend all day in her crate without incident (although nothing can be put in the crate with her). It's the one period we know that she can't get into mischief. She is obstinate and contrary, but at least somewhat less of a troublemaker than when she was younger.

Sweebie, our nearly 12 year old Retriever Mix (humane society rescue) is the exact opposite. He's had almost no training, is very respectful, obedient and calm. He's also the dog that managed to survive two weeks in the MI winter after our auto accident in January--so he's resourceful. When we leave for the day we put him in the same room with the other dog, but have let him stay in any part of the house without incident.

We love them both, but ZuZu requires a ton more patience than many would be willing to give and that's understandable. I walk them 1 to 2 miles every day.

"...let him stay in any part of the house without incident."

That is the way that Sterling was for 12 years. He roamed the entire house, but never bothered a thing or had a single accident. As you may recall from yesterday, I had the irrigation wire fixed by having it encased in PVC pipe. Well, Coco found a new toy. I had a garden hose coiled up on a metal wheel behind a bush in the rear yard. When we returned from church this afternoon, we discovered that Coco uncoiled the hose completely. It now has about 30 holes in the first six feet or so. He also carried the hose about 40 feet into the yard. He does manage to stay busy when our backs are turned. He looked so proud of his accomplishment when I went out to see what he was doing. I think that we need a very long walk this afternoon if I can manage it. I suggested to my wife that we tie him to the rear of the car and take him for a 10 mile walk at 60 mph. She didn't find humor in the suggestion.

The carwash I use (RainX) has wax in it and I have been using Adams quick detailer to put a nice shine on.
Took the Fusion on a 1600+ mile round trip last weekend and I was surprised how clean it looked when I got back.
Used a spray bottle with water in it do the initial cleanup and followed up the quick detailer. Looks pretty good.

Older folks don't buy many new cars on the whole. All the tech stuff is for the population that represents the main buyer group. I have absolutely no use for the tech stuff. I'd love a civic hatchback with leather but they will never make one. That's why I bought the prius. Don't have any options but leather and mats.

Yes, my brother is older and is very slow to change. I am slow to change too, but not that bad.

On the other hand, my MIL is 98 and she is on the computer every day. Of course she goes to the gym a few days of the week, cuts the lawn, shovels snow, and lives on her own in a 2 story house.

"Is the I-pad the same as a large I-phone with a big screen?"

Excellent question. Also, how do these compare with the Black Berry that I hear so much about these days?

I have been to India, but that was 30 years ago. Still, many things have not changed since I was there. The abject poverty is something that I never care to witness again. The sounds and smells cannot be reproduced in pictures. The native foods are an acquired taste---as is true of many countries. The people were very nice---well mannered, polite, and curious about America. You may remember that we had a regular poster here who was from India. He resurfaced briefly a few months back, but he didn't stay long. Are you planning a trip there? If so, it takes quite a bit of initial preparation for a trip to that area of the world.

I hope someone else answers this for you because they will know more than I do. But, as far as I can tell, I think it does everything a larger i pad does. I am sure you would have to read just one article at a time from a newspaper, but other than that, I think it does everything. The guy who showed it to me can get and send emails if he is in a wi-fi area. He has a separate phone because it costs him less, but for about $70 a month he could use it as a phone and have complete internet using the phone systems.

Doesn't anyone read murder mysteries? Stuart Woods? Tess Gerritsen?

I love mysteries the most and I have read Gerritson and Woods. One author who writes books that are easy to read, move quickly, and always has a trick ending is Harlan Coben. They are all good, but especially Tell No One. In it, a guy actually sees his wife get killed. Then, a few years later he gets email messages from her, and she tells him things only he and she would know about. I won't tell you how it ends of course, but it is very clever.

Harlan Coben has the additional positive of setting al his novels in New Jersey so I recognize many of the places in the novels....

Since I haven't been in for a day or two you might think I haven't had any more hospital trips or anything. That would be accurate. Been a good time but we've had some wet and cold days. Now that we are leaving in the morning it's warming up....
