I'll be glad to get this procedure "behind" me!
Modern medicine is amazing these days!
Several people have had successful implants. However, like most surgery, there's a small possibility of a misstep. I called my barber shop to make an appointment. The twin brother of my barber asked if I knew about my barber. I expected a heart attack at 75 or stroke, but it was the cataract surgery repair.
When my barber had cataracts done last spring, the surgeon nipped the edge of the lens. That distortion has continued to give him trouble. So he finally is trying the surgery to repair that problem. At the time he spent a couple weeks with a rubber band holding his upper eyelid closed so he wouldn't disturb the healing of that eye. Now he's having a repair of the surgery, hopefully.
BTW, his brother told me while cutting my hair that he had both eyes done. Several other patients of theirs have had their cataracts done by the same doctor.
For me it would be a go with the caveat that things can always go wrong.

One of the store's employees made a mistake. Seeing how aggressive their sales force is, one of the sales people saw my first "pre-sold" unit sitting in the back rooms. Since it had to be ordered, I'll assume they still didn't have any of that particular model in stock. And, when faced with making a sale and claiming he/she made an "honest mistake" (don't know how that would be possible as it showed up in their computer system as sold), vs not making a sale (of a big ticket item, no less), they chose the sale over ethics.
I asked for a refund. I was going to just move on and find another TV at some other store. They threw it out there for the higher end TV and the low end TV's price.
After thinking about it, I'm OK with it.
fezo.....a 3D movie came with the TV, along with a pair of 3D glasses as some sort of "starter set" bundle.
I said it before. It costs studios too much to make 3D movies. Nothing but the big budget blockbusters are getting 3D. There are too few of them that would benefit by 3D effects (can't imagine a romantic comedy really lending itself to 3D). Finally, people don't like to wear the 3D glasses.
As you've noted, if you are color blind, or have other visual issues, 3D just isn't going to cut it.
They've been trying to sell the concept of 3D movies for 50 years. It hasn't caught on yet. Doubt it will catch on any more now, than it did back then.
That said, 3D TVs happen to be excellent "regular" TVs.
One thing is for sure. Your doctor will be the only person, other than your wife, who can get that intimate with you. (Grin)

Just think. If you use the new car for your business, you could deduct the trip as a business expense. Snake might have some ideas on that thought.
Richard
What a great thought! We usually think of those things but it skipped my mind completely.
I think the dream just got a little closer.
I think a problem is coordinating when you go with when they are running off that particular model. But, they could build it and I'll look at another car being made.
Great idea though!

I have only the one in mind.
If and when I have the procedure I will let you all know.
On another medical note, there was a report this morning that the best treatment for prostate cancer might be no treatment at all.
Everyone's situation is different, of course, but one option is to just monitor the progress and see how it develops before you take any drastic measures.

Houdini--
My 80 year old father just had cataract surgery on both his eyes (each one done a different month) earlier this year and had no complications. His mother went to the same clinic about 20 years earlier and ended up with a severe infection, which caused her a lot of pain and emotional distress--so much so that she neglected to get the other eye done. The surgical procedures have greatly improved in those 20 years and it's typically done as an outpatient. Back in the 60s when my grandfather got his cataract surgery they made the patient stay in bed for a week--didn't even want them getting up to go to the bathroom.
My great uncle got prostrate cancer back in the 70s when the options were very limited and he received no treatment. He died about 6 or 7 years after the diagnosis from something totally unrelated. Finding a doctor who is willing to discuss all the options is paramount.
Gogiboy
richard - i should have defended you earlier on this but better late than never. Having only the one eye does not exempt one from speeding. I had several choice tickets. None were with anyone at close on front of me and only for the last couple did I discover the alternatives to pleading guilty.
It's been a long time since I had one - at least 15 years. Some was just being more careful and some is that I've slowed down.
gimme.....roadburner and I have done a lot of research on Home Theater set ups. He'll correct me, if I'm wrong. But, plasmas are inherently better because they don't suffer from motion blur, and generally have better black levels (which is the basis for good contrast ratios). LCDs are getting better. They just aren't where plasmas are, yet. Plus, size-for-size, plasmas are less expensive than LED/LCDs in addition to having a better picture. Plasmas aren't prone to dead pixels as LCD/LEDs are. Finally, plasmas are generally bigger (up to 73" panels). Only way to get something in the 60" + range would be to go to DLP displays, which Mitsubishi is a proponent of. Those are rear projection units, though with inferior contrast ratios.
You really can't go with the picture quality you see in stores. They turn the contrast ratios and brightness way up to grab attention. They are by no means accurate for true picture quality, though. Plus, boosting contrast and brightness significantly lowers the life span of either technology.
Pioneer was so far ahead of the HD curve with their plasmas, it was a shame they decided to get out of that business. no one has yet caught up. Panasonic bought a lot of Pioneer's KURO technology. But, my 2 year old Pioneer plasma still has the best picture I've seen on any display, regardless of technology, price, size. That's still true today.
It is important to know that there are exceptions. I lost a really good friend this past year to a nasty, aggressive prostate cancer. It spread out of the prostate and they couldn't save him. He was only 70.
This is not to scare the willies out of anyone but pay attention to your doctor.
I have a Sony LCD TV that I got in January of '05 while Son #1 was still working for them and I got a pretty good employee price but I've seen the LED models and LED's are the newest technology for TV's now. I told the tale about getting an LED monitor on Cyber Monday and that picture is gobs better than the LCD it replaced. So, I'm willing to get an LED TV just for the fun of it but that purchase might cost me the dining room that I've been ducking for a few years now and that will probably end that thought.

Like you, I think that 3D will be the "quadraphonic sound" of this decade- not enough interest or novelty to justify the development and associated recording and playback hardware costs. Nothing I've seen gives me any temptation whatsoever to replace my Pioneer...

I recently had this discussion with someone and your comparison is dead on. The only negative IMO to plasma is it can have "burn-in" issues. I recently helped my cousin mount his newer 46" LG Plasma on the wall and it had the faint (very faint) outline of the cartoon network "bug" on the lower right corner of the screen (darn kids). I was surprised I thought that they had technology to fix that (pixel shift or something to that effect).
Panasonic makes very good Plasmas, my future MIL has a 60" (that I recently mounted as well, heavy sucker) and it simply has an awesome picture.
I am stuck in the stoneage with two Sony LCD projection units. One is a 50" the other is a 60" XBR. I still get lots of comments on how great the picture is despite them being just about 5 years old now.

Burn-in is dependant on several factors. Running a high contrast setting and not using a pixel "orbiter" are the usual culprits. My Pioneer and my Panasonic have not suffered from burn-in or image retention(think: temporary burn-in) issues. My son uses the Panasonic as a gaming monitor for his Xbox 360 and if any issue were to show up it would be on that TV.

Plasma burn in has become much less of an issue over the past couple of years than it was in the past. As roadburner points out, most today have "orbiter technology" that alleviates the issue for the most part. Plus, most burn in today is temporary. Current plasmas have settings to "wipe out" burn in images if it does, indeed, happen.
It costs a lot of money to get into the plasma business. That's why Sony isn't in it. They've stuck a stake in the ground with LCD/LED. Panasonic, Samsung, LG carry both plasmas and LCD/LED. In addition to Sony, Sharp and Toshiba only make LCD/LEDs. Not certain, but you can probably throw VIzio in that latter category, too.
Lots of really good TVs out right now. And, pricing is cut throat for really nice sets.
It is important to put your plan into action the second you spot a single snowflake. Remember! Snowflakes travel in packs and will attack the unsuspecting traveler!
1) - Choke down that horrible sense of panic and head immediately towards the nearest grocery store to purchase a 12 year supply of condensed milk, brocolli, moth balls and cheeze whiz... or whatever else you can grab amidst the frenzy of like-minded panic stricken shoppers.
2) - If you are over 60: Be sure to slow down at the bottom of any hill that has snow on it. God forbid you have enough momentum to continue moving forward and not get stuck sideways with 36 commuters unable to get around you. Forget all the years you drove dogsleds 80 miles through 40 feet of snow way back when winter temperatures were always below absolute zero.
3) - Claim your space! Straddling those white lines shows everyone who's in charge! Curse as some farmer, tired of your random, lane-hogging passive-aggressive silliness finally just nudges your hybrid into the ditch with his beat up old mid 70's pickup truck. Decide to show him who's boss! Stop multi-tasking, hang up, log off, set your Starbucks down, issue a sell order. Freeze to death because you locked yourself out of your Audi and are too stupid to walk across the street to the 24hr quickie mart.
4) - If you have relocated here from the deep south: Ignore the road, point up at the sky and stare in wonder while coasting at idle speed across the yellow lines. Decide to write your congressman and demand a law be passed that all states must have weather just like it was for you back in Florida. Look up and blow horn at idiot you just ran off his side of the road - stop to teach him a thing or two about being in your way.
5) - If you are a soccer mom ferrying a load of trolls to school: Sit coffee on dash, roll down window and look blankly at the white, fluffy things way up in the sky that usually just drop rain. Accelerate randomly through intersections while your children scream in terror at the dump truck that had the right of way. Hear the radio say school will be two hours late - begin chugging Valium and sending text messages to relatives from your home state asking if you should evacuate or check into a clinic to cope.
Lighten up people and remember - it's snow. JUST SNOW. Enjoy it! If you're scared of it - find a vacant parking lot and relive the adolescent dream of careening wildly through the lot in your car until it stops scaring you... you'll be a better driver for the experience and your kids will think you're the coolest mom/dad in town for doing it.

AT the first TV weathercaster announcement of approaching "white death" head out to the local Krogers and purchase bread and milk along with the other things. Never mind that the weather forcasters raving about "white death" coming were wrong last week about the 10 inch snow they forcast which ended up as flurries. Never mind that the station is using the weather warning every 5 minutes as a ratings leader. You should see what they do around here at the least thunderstorm to make sure they can say they forcast that level .05 tornado that hit down between two farms out in Darke County. Heaven forbid the other station predicted a tornado based on the storm shape on radar and this station missed it.

Only if business is conducted on the trip itself can you write any of the trip off, an then only that part of the trip associated with the business. If you are using the car for business back in the US the trip will not be deductible.

Thanks for that....actually Canada not the U.S. but same difference. It seemed like a good idea at the time but it wouldn't make sense to the government, though it makes sense to me.
The London leg of the journey is a business expense, so the flight to London, and the flight returning from Germany would be elgible for a tax deduction I believe, or at the least part from the UK back pro-rated.

Just a few tips, many people write books few ever get published and fewer are successful. Publishers don't have the staff to read every manuscript.
If you really think you have a good book and you want to get it published the best things to do are;
1) Take it to independent bookstores and offer to let them have the book on consignment. Leave about 10 copies. The bookseller will want 40 to 50% of the cover price if he sells any. If you sell about half of them in a month you will have a pretty good seller. A lady sold books to bookstores that way from the trunk of her car. She sold a 100,000 that way then a major publisher picked it up and sold millions...called Mary Ellens Helpful Hints (what to do if you get ketchup on your tie etc)
2) If you think your book is really good you should see an agent who handles similar books. Find one with a good relationship with publishers. Publishers like it when a book comes from a credible agent, saves them a lot of time and trouble.
3) Promote, promote, promote. Get articles in local newspapers. Find an edge to your book that gets you on talk radio shows or morning TV. Get people talking about it. One guy who wrote a Star Wars book and asked me to look at it was going to sign copies at a bookstore and he had these space-like costumes he was going to wear while signing copies.
It won't be easy. Warren Murphy left a manuscript of a book at his dentists office. The dentist had a patient who was an editor, so he gave it to him. He liked it and the book became a series called The Destroyer.
A guy wrote a romance novel. The publisher knew romance novels written by men won't sell. The publisher used the name Jennifer Wilde as the author. The book sold over a million copies.
You never know. Good luck. It would be really something to write a book that sold a few hundred thousand copies.

I told this tale about something like that happening when we lived in SC back in the mid ’90’s but since we’re talking deathly fear here, I’ll repeat the tale.
Mrs. jmonroe was at the local grocery store (not the Krogers but the Bi Lo across the street from the Krogers in our town). She is busy buying her stuff and is looking over her list and when she looks up she sees the store is filled. She said to a woman, “WOW, this placed filled up all of a sudden didn’t it ?” The woman answered back, “where have you been lady, haven’t you seen it snowing out there?” Mrs. j looks outside and sure enough there is snow coming down (almost 100 flakes). She finishes her shopping (a full carts worth) and heads to the check out line only to be behind a dozen frantic shoppers who just dashed in for their emergency rations. She drives home in this storm that has barely left snow on the grassy areas and NONE on the roads.
I get home a few hours later and hear the tale, grabbed my camera and went outside to record the snow that is clinging to the palm type bush on the edge of the driveway and street that will show all the folks back home how terrible of a winter we had in ’94 and the picture would prove it.
It snowed a LITTLE more that afternoon and eventually the street was covered, about 3 flakes deep I’d say. It must have snowed more in Augusta GA (about 12 miles away) because when I watched the 6 o’clock news they showed a lot of cars that were stuck or wrecked. I don’t think that city had a telephone pole that didn’t have a pickup truck leaning against it trying to hold it in place. Fortunately, no serious injuries but it was amusing for a Yankee to see this.
Sorry for the repeat but it’s that time of year again and when Mrs. jmonroe can drive in the snow without batting an eye that is amusing to me too. :shades:

We were in DC last winter when a monster storm hit DC friday morning into Saturday. When we left DC sunday morning we were driving thru main streets in DC that hadn't been plowed yet.Took us 3 hrs to get to Baltimore on 295.Once we reached Baltimore the highways were completely cleared. The south and snow don't get along at all.
Seriously thanks for the info, I have done a bit of research in how to get something published. I know that in promoting a book to a publisher or agent not to send them the manuscript but just a synopsis. Right now I have all the important scenes worked out now i am just filling in the spaces in between. Then it goes off to my editor (my editor is my niece who has her degrees in English lit).

This is awesome - One additional step that has been perfected in the Northwest (at least Seattle)
When going up a hill - as you lose traction (especially in a rear wheel drive car or metro bus) move the wheel back and forth until you are at a 45 degree angle to the flow of traffic, preferable blocking as many lanes as possible with bonus points if you straddle the double yellow line. If you drive a bus ensure that you are blocking the street from curb to curb. Next turn off the vehicle and lock it up tight as a drum - set the alarm if equipped. Lastly leave as quickly as possible and don't look back. Lastly return to vehicle location a week later with local TV in tow. Looked shocked and surprised to learn the vehicle was towed and the towing fees are in excess of $500.

I had cataracts removed and lenses implanted about 5 or 6 years ago. I went from 20-400 vision to 20-15 within a few minutes of having it done. Before they wheeled me in to the OR I could barely see a splotch that was on the wall. When they wheeled me out a half hour later I could read the time on that splotch.
I had one eye done first and the other eye done about 5 weeks later. For the second one I had the choice of having it done the next week or 5 weeks later. I wish I had chosen the next week - it was quick & painless.
They put a series of drops in the eye. I assume each one is a "stronger" anesthetic. By the time they wheel you in you are ready.
You don't see a thing, by the way, during the procedure. I was worried about seeing a giant knife coming at me. :surprise:
