My prediction is a bad connection at the wheel speed sensor or the sensor itself.
Good analysis! It is a sensor that isn't working properly. Service manager says this can happen when weather turns icy and the sensor might have to just be reset.
However it was actually faulty, and it has to be removed. They have one in stock, but it took one hour to diagnose, and and about 5 or 6 hours to fix it.
Glad it is under warranty, 6 hours at $150 an hour plus a complex part!
I began to think if I have major problems I'll have to buy something else next time. I can't think of anything else that compares though, really. Especially with a hardtop convertible roof. I guess I would have to consider the Infinity G, CTS, Audi, VW, and that's it.
They gave me a Nissan Sentra rental car until mine is ready tomorrow. That's an experience. First, I hate cars where you can't see a hood...I feel like I am driving a bus. Then the seats are so low and the dash and windows so high, feel like I am in a pit. The good thing is the headroom, I could be about 8 feet tall and I would have enough headroom. It is ergonomically ridiculous, there is no way you can be in a comfortable sitting position. All drab gray interior.
Lots of torque steering and it is hard to control jerky takeoffs. Not very good in snow and ice and the worst feture is the lack of "the feel of the road".......it feels like driving a toy pedal car with loose numb steering.
I hope my car is ready early tomorrow...I can't wait to get it back. I know, all cars get you from A to B, but getting there is half the fun, and this Sentra is NOT fun!

Six hours? The sensors(BMW calls them "pulse generators") simply bolt into the back of the front or rear hub- and the front sensors cost @$80 each, the rear @$95 each. Perhaps they replaced the hub as well; if so
I'll bet it was one of the rear sensors, as they are a bit more difficult to replace.

It's still easy with the right car. For teaching purposes, I like Honda, with its light, easy to modulate clutch & reasonably crisp & direct shift action. Anyone can learn on a Honda.
You're good RR. It is inside the rear, and I think he mentioned had to get at the bearings. Supposed to get it back this morning...they were going to work on it in the evening and from 8 this morning.
This Sentra is amazingly roomy and everything works...it is even solid and it is very quiet. Absolutely no fun element though....extremely basic transportation for someone who gets no enjoyment from driving. I can't wait to get my own car back.

I think, from what isell said, the hard part is finding one!
I hope Kirstie answers your question.........what was the other car in the collision? And, how did it do, is my question?

According to Edmunds the invoice on the 135i is $42460 and TMV is $42373.
It doesn’t sound like you had to twist their arm for that price. The price dropped pretty quickly from the way you described it. So, I’d wait for a better offer.
As for Edmunds TMV, I’ve always been able to beat that price and rather easily at that. I use the TMV as a guide to the MAXIMUM that I will pay.
Having said all this, if you like the car and the offer then it should be out on the track in the Spring. And don’t forget, this car has the Nav system and from what I’ve heard about you track guys, if you get lost out on the track you’ll never hear the end of it and you might even lose your instructor seat. Ain’t worth it is it? (emotorcon goes here)

lol I think she will see how much an extended warranty will cost and then decide!

No matter how low they were, people always wanted to pay even less.
Sometimes the TMV numbers made sense and were doable and other times they weren't. People couldn't understand it when we wouldn't sell cars for those numbers.
I remember once when Odysseys were in short supply. I spend days with a picky woman who finally decided on the exact Odyssey she wanted. She waffled back and forth on colors and finally decided on a certain color.
She didn't know it and I didn't tell her but we had the ONLY one in the entire district. She left to do some more "research".
The next day she came in armed with a thick file folder. She told me.." I KNOW what others are paying for these"
Then she proceeded to show me the TMV and said..." Nobody actually pays this much"..She then proceed to make a very unacceptable offer so I walked her. She left slowly shaking her head.
I flagged that Oddssey..." DO NOT DEALER TRADE"
Sure enough, we had four or five calls from other stores trying to get that Odyssey not that they would have taken her number.
I made sure we had parted on good terms so she called me two days later, AFTER someone else had bought that Odyssey.
She ended up paying more and settling for her second choice color.
I know that you must really miss your car. A Nissan? What a change!
Richard
You should be happy, I am reporting a negative factor about my bmw...since I am always fair and balanced in my reports.
I waited for 2 hours about 2 weeks ago when they did an oil change and found the rear wheel sensor reported it had gone about 200000 miles. They said they fixed it. Strange that now it has failed, and the car is there for about 6 hours, and they are still working on it.
Like I said, I am not completely satisfied with the reliability of bmws, but I don't think there is another car out there that I would like as much, especially in hardtop convertible form.
My wife's bmw had the oil light come on about 3 weeks ago and that got fixed, faulty sensor. Now the radio doesn't work properly, can't change the stations except by using the scanner. It probably needs a reset, but between oill changes, putting snow tires on, and faulty sensors I have spent about 15 hours in the waiting room in the last month. At least they have a good latte machine.
I think it is all a plot so you will buy an extended warranty when the 4 years is up.

That's an interesting way to retain or capture a prospect. Does that happen offer?
Richard
" Well..ABC Honda has one...I saw it"
" Yeah, but they won't give it to us"
The key is when this is the case, I had to make very sure we parted on good terms otherwise the customer would cave in and settle for a different color so as not to give us the satisfation of making the sale.
Richard
I am extremely low maintenance, my car is my only vice, if you call it that. My wife asked me where I wanted to travel to next...other than business. I said, I don't want to go any where, Tsunamis (not going to try spell-check) in Thailand, 28,000 people murdered in Mexico, the army killing drug dealers in Rio, cruise ship being practically destroyed in the Mediterannean, snow and before that floods all over Europe, rioting in the streets in England, Ireland, France, Italy, heavy rain in California, freezing temperatures in Florida.
I just want to stay home!
The Nissan Sentra is a joke. I don't know how or why they could make a car that is so awkward to drive. I would really want to sit in a Juke before I would recommend it to any one. I don't know why they haven't phoned me yet.........where's my car!!!!!!!!
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
Not positive, but I think it would be $3000 for 2 and possibly 3 years. I don't normally believe in extended warranties, but I think this one would be a good idea. At least you know what your costs will be, and it would be a shame to trade it in with just 35k miles on it. On the other hand, it sounds good getting a new one, 4 years warranty, and the difference between my trade in and the new one won't be quite so much of a shock.
And, I would like to get black with a red and black trim interior. I like the James Bond blue, and it gets lots of compliments, like the young lady at the drive through coffee and donut place yesterday, but I like the black one now.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
The companies that sell these aren't dumb and they price them accordingly.
The one we used is the oldest and biggest in the nation and they WILL NOT sell an extended warranty for any Land Rover after being burned over and over.
They do sell warranties for european cars but they are very expensive.
Still, that's a chunk of change for a small coupe. But, if you're an avid BMW person, I can see the appeal. Plus, $8,100 discount.....WOW!
Usually it's just me and the GF in my car these days. I could make a coupe work. If Audi had been willing to cut a smoking deal on an A5, that may have been in my garage instead of the TL (albeit I had serious reservations about it being a 4 cyl and reliability).
Good news - got the call from the insurance company yesterday, and of course it's a total loss. 2003 Infiniti G35 Sedan, leather, sunroof. Anyone want to guess what the payout offer is?

Just a quick look so I am getting as low as $8000 to as much as $14000 so I am going to guess the friendly insurance company has offered $12, 436.

Just be careful medical wise. They will probably want you to sign off on medical claims ASAP and you don't want to do that untill you are SURE everyone is OK long term.
Money wise, I'm going to guess around 14,000.
Thanks fo that information. I have written to my sales rep to tell him about all the time I have spent getting repairs, and to ask what the cost will be.
I am pretty sure the 2003 Mercedes was $3000 for 3 years, but we never needed it........of course!

Insurance companies are on my s@#& list (along with lawyers and the oil industry) right now. So, not feeling it to cut them a break.
Personally, I'd not settle for less than $12K for the car (probably offering less than $10K from the insurance company). I'd "ask" for $15K. For medical I'd ask another $5K. That makes asking for $20K total. $17K is your ""one chance only" price.
If they grant it, sign their waver along with the check. If not, find the lawyer in your town that specializes in ambulance chasing and refer the insurance company to him/her.

Our son got rear ended about ten years ago with two friends in the car. His Civic was totalled but nobody got hurt.
His Civic was about a ten year old SI Hatchback. These are pretty cool and unique little cars that are impossible to find.
The adjuster got real crappy with me on the phone as he made a low offer on the Civic.
So, I told him..." I know you have to deal with unreasnoble people who demand more than their car is really worth...I also know that yoju are paid to settle claims as cheaply as possible...I fully understand that"
" Now, please understand this...I'm thinking it may not be a bad idea to have all three kids totally examined by a staff of doctors...you will pay that bill and who knows what they may find....also, friends have suggested that we retain a lawyer...don't you think you may want to reconsider your offer?"
He told me he could call me back. Ten minutes later, he did and he paid us the 1500.00 over book value that I asked for.
When I totaled our 02 Rav with 70+K on it last January our insurance company offered $11.5K (or was it $12K?). Since it was a one-car accident and I was at fault and dealing with my own insurance company I tried pressing for a bit more, but they wouldn't budge. Still, it seemed reasonable and well within the higher range of KBB and Edmunds valuations for an 8 yr old vehicle with 70K identically equipped.
I don't know how many miles (or the year) of Kirstie's G, but I'm surprised it is worth so little given what it must have cost new. Is the depreciation really that high?
Meanwhile, I'm keeping my fingers crossed as I prepare to do battle with another long road trip and the snow and ice in MI.

As for medical, I'm a little wary right now. I haven't gotten word from my insurance company about what kind of insurance the kid who hit me had. I suspect it was bare minimum - he stated that he had "just gotten current" on his insurance payment, which could be a lie for all I know. We really didn't have any injuries, and I certainly don't want to go after payment if this whole thing is going against my policy in the end.
Also, good news (?) is that I've lost the title, and have to apply for a duplicate today, which will take up to 10 days to receive. They can't give, and I can't accept, a settlement before I have that. This allows additional time in case any hidden injuries do show up.

GG said you would get under $12k, but I was pretty close too...I should get a consolation prize of a free membership for next year. My guess in Post 62598 was a very close $12436, but I didn't know the mileage.

I was talking to a friend who has a 2008 Uplander and he has had every sensor possible go on him to, and his warranty is up now...after 3 years. He is also concerned. Maybe someone should make low tech cars that don't have all these devices that can go wrong.

You know, I'll bet that sensor was designed to be part of the hub from the get-go.
That way if you have either system fail, be it a WB or a sensor etc, you have to buy the whole deal. And look at the outrageous labour rate alone to do that one simple repair. And replacing a wheel speed sensor should/could be an hour tops.
Ford has done this same thing though I believe on their F150's. If either a WB or sensor goes, the whole assembly has to be replaced. It's all very strategic and purposive. It was supposed to last the wty period ya know...that whole thing was suppose to be on your dime. Or the next owner's...thereby accounting for depreciation levels that are pretty steep.
Many years ago with one of my old girlfriends 92 Grand Am, she had her ABS light come on. I told her I'd look at it before we find out what the dealer wanted. Well I started at the all the wheels and found a left front sensor connector corroded with electrolysis. I had her come and look and said, I'll bet that's why. So i buttoned it back up and we decided we'd have the dlr take a look for an estimate. They wanted to replace the main control unit which was around 900+ bucks and a wiring harness etc etc. It was going to cost almost half what the car was worth. And to resell certified it would have to be fixed so...so she tells them she will decide what to do in a few days. So I had her leave the car with me the next day, cuz i was going to start with replacing that connector. I went to the dealer only to discover that they not only didn't sell the connector I needed, but that 2 pole wire goes eventually back up under the hood and was part of a 450!!!! dollar wiring harness. So I left empty handed, went home, took apart an old VCR, used a Dremel on one of the connectors I found in it to shape it to what I needed, and soldered it onto its own wire, siliconed it, soldered the other end to a good spot under the hood away from potential splash, soldered there and let it them both up for 24 hours before reassembling at the wheel, and finished the job the next afternoon. A few years later she had the light come on again (we had broken up by then but stayed friends) and when she had them check it was one of the rear wheel sensors. (which she pd to fix, it was a lot less than the fr by a long shot) Then a couple more years later the right front sensor connector failed. She dealt the car then on a Civic with the light on. But my repair outlasted another 6 years that we know of on that same car. And they wanted to re and re an entire ABS unit under the hood..
What's an Uplander? Mitsubishi I guess? It is so rare to see any Mitsu in cottage country that if I do see one I do a dbl take wondering, what was that?
I used to watch that 50 years ago when I was a kid, don't we use E-Bay rules these days? Highest bid takes it.

Driver--
They do, they're called Japanese cars and there are zillions on the road costing their owners (with the exception of roadburner) little to nothing (ducking and laughing).
There is at least one word to describe BMW's idrive, but it can't be printed because of the forum rules. I have a question: what's wrong with having a volume and station seek nob(s) on the radio, preferably ones without a sensor like those old style push button presets? Those were the days when a dead battery didn't require re-entering each and every station.
