I will say the trust idea is good. He could keep control until I turn say 60...
Am posting from the hospital using my phone. More work than I need
Almost through the first unit.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
My doc's office was busy too. She said a lot of it is because people are trying to use up the deductables on their insurance before year end.
Gave me a different prescription and an appt. with a Derm guy.
Maybe they gave you some Norwegian blood so you can be as bullheaded as I am!
B.ack in here later
I am still hoping to realize my dream of making it to at least 90 before being shot by a jealous husband. You have a wonderful attitude and I hope you have a great Christmas.

Actually, our attorney suggested a living trust if we reach $2 million in savings. We're only one fourth of the way there. According to a telephone call that we received yesterday, we could be half way there in 90 days. It appears that my wife's first cousin, who was single, remembered her in his will. Too bad that all of these old people didn't remember us when we were 30 and 40. We're pretty old to spend much of it now. Besides, we are comfortable with our living style. We don't really need anything except for a few nice trips. We could cover those ourselves. I could get a new car, but I like what we have now. We like our house, so no need to buy a bigger one. Guess I'll send my two great nephews to college. That will ease their parents' pain.
Richard
Small check list:
1. Have you changed soaps recently?
2. Have you changed shampoos recently?
3. Have you used any car or household chemicals that are new to you?
4. Are you carrying anything in your shirt or pants pockets that is not what you normally carry?
5. have you been exposed to any animals that don't normally live with you?
6. Have you purchased any new furniture lately for your home?
7. Has your diet changed recently?
8. Have you been wearing any new clothing recently? Always wash or dry clean new clothing before you wear it. Overseas plants use dangerous chemicals.
9. Have you changed barbers in the last six months?
10. Are you using new after shave or deodorant?
11. Have you pruned bushes or cut wood lately?
12. Are you wearing any new jewelry?
I remember the above things from my BIL's questionaire to his patients. There are some others that I don't recall. Hope you get relief soon.

I can help you there! Well, except for the 30 and 40 part.
I'm indeed done and home but about to hit thechiropractor and then shop a little with one of the kids.
I told houdini no horning in on my territory and the phone changed horning in into Birmingham. Guess no one though it was more odd than any of my other posts.....
She added steriods to the antibotics just perscribed and I have an appt with a Derm guy tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Craig
No...the parents had those kids so they are the ones to have the "pain". That's what I was told when I stuck my hand out for tuition money for my two sons.
You're an easy touch. No wonder 'fez' and 'houdini' are being so nice to you.

A friend we know just started to get rashes and dry skin, from out of nowhere.
She went for a battery of needles to see if it is allergies. She never know she had any allergies before, but she found out she is allergic to a lot of things, shellfish being a major one and she always ate lots of shrimp, then there is a host of others including trees, dust, flowers etc.
This just developed suddenly, never had a problem before.

That is a great jesture, makes a very worthwhile gift. Would you make it contigent on getting certain marks? I have thought about doing this if any grandchildren, nieces or nephews need help financially for university, if the parents just couldn't manage it.

1.1 Have you changed laundry detergents lately? Try using less detergent for laundry and using an extra rinse on clothes.

College? Buy them each a new car. Just kidding.
Egghead got a 3.5 first semester. Too bad Dean's List is 3.6.
After 1 semester, has 47 credits.
3 year plan? Not happening, too much fun to be had.
I'll ask my wife about the laundry detergent.
Thanks!
I've been pleased with my few visits to hospital -- hope your visit is as good as is possible, under the circumstances.
Residual soap in fabrics can be a problem. Many people use too much laundry soap. When we got a low water volume washer, it became apparent. We could even wash some things without adding soap at all.
As for the middle of the back, I've asked my dermotologist about that for years. His response is that his back is itching him also in the middle. He had prescribed Clobex one time for me. It's a nice solution but see the next paragraph.
I have found for the Ohio winter weather dry skin Vaseline intensive rescue moisture locking lotion does wonders to ease that nagging burning. But you are in Washington--you don't have cold, dry air winters?

To you and jmonroe: Definitely. I'm not paying for a party. Mine came too hard. One of the boys is a very good student. The other one likes to play. I'll have to really watch him. Jmonroe is wrong. I'm not an easy touch. It's pretty hard to get money out of me. I'm one of the original tightasses. I believe in helping those who help themselves. Lazy is a curse word to me. I have zero tolerance for those who practice it.
Richard
Ask her if she changed the fabric softener too. I developed a similar problem years ago and discovered my wife was using a new fabric softener. She changed back to the old one and the problem went away.

I was wondering about that, and I really believe in what you said. We have one set of grandchildren (3) who go to a private school (about $20000 a year each) and they get a tremendous education. I went to graduation last year and out of about 100 kids 98 were accepted at universities..places like Princeton etc. Of the two who weren't going, one wanted to take a college course first, and the other has done some modelling and wanted to try that. These kids run businesses, know how to work on projects together, volunteer for charities etc...what an advantage they will have in life.
Our other group live on the west coast and they were home educated and when they did get to school they found it difficult. I did teach school at one time so I know home schooling should not be attempted by amateurs.
But, that's what they did and now the oldest boys will try to get into a technical course. We strongly believe the kids and the parents should pay their own way. However, if the kids really want to go to university (doubtful) or an institute of technology, and they can't do it financially, we would gladly help out...but there will be a lot of accountability, such as seeing report cards (progress reports or whatever they are called) continuously.
They are good kids, but I think they have had too much freedom, and not enough structure in their lives. The only way home schooling works is if the parents have the knowledge that teachers do.....and a background in teaching techniques. These parents are truly untrained to do it. They spend a lot of time with their kids and they are very loving parents, but I don't know what they were thinking.

That's a hard system to compare schools fairly. That problem has existed here in this part of US for quite a while. E.g., the parochial school chooses which students get to enter their school. They select those with parents who will ensure they work to learn and will want to go to college.
First, The schools also have selective retention. If SallyPlayGirl is not on a track to get into college she may be "recommended" to return to the public or other schools but will "have" to leave the school we're discussing. She's not there Senior Year to be counted as one who DID NOT get admitted or didn't want to go to a college.
Second, the schools also practiced selective usage. If a great football/basketball/soccer player could be recruited but wasn't academic success material, they were kept because it was great for the teams for a few years. But before that Senior Year they seem to have gotten into enough trouble or those grades were too low for the school in question to retain them: they need to go back to, drumroll please, the public schools with their D and F average to try to have enough credits to graduate. The decision by the parochial school often came AFTER the end of the sports season in which the poor academic excelled.
So when the school announces that 95% of their students were in the top 25%ile on standardized tests and 99% were going on to college (or higher education which includes community colleges here), it really didn't mean much more than the school had a good system for culling their crop before data time.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
A lot of truth in what you said. I went to a public high school, but the equivalent Catholic High School always got higher average marks, because if students didn't perform, they were kicked out and ended up in the public school.
I taught elementary school, in the public system, and there are different problems there. When I went to school I never saw or heard of kids having attention deficite disorders. About 10% of the students seem to have it these days. The problem is, those students, plus the ones that don't want to be there, make it difficult for the others who do want to learn. I left teaching mainly for that reason....my theory is that learning should be a priviledge, and if you don't act properly in the classroom, there should be one big room set aside in the school, where the students who are creating a problem, should go and read books or watch educational videos. 25% of the students hold back 75% of the students, so we are catering to the lowest common denominator.
I agree private schools have a big advantage and that is why their students do better. But, the quality of education is so superior, there is little comparison. The kids I saw graduating had so much confidence, and education meant so much to them...they knew it was a key to unlock the door. I didn't see that in the schools I went to, or taught in.
(Does spell check work...don't want to test it now)

I am trying to do some financial planning for retirement. I spoke to some “financial advisers”/brokers, and according to them I need to save every dollar I make, and give it them to invest so that they could make a commission.
I guess my question is, if I have no mortgage, $1000 in real estate taxes, insurance, and utilities, how much do you think I will need in savings to have a comfortable retirement? By comfortable I mean going out to eat couple times a week, taking a nice trip twice a year etc. I am looking for numbers in today’s dollars; I will double that for inflation for my retirement.
That depends on what you want to do in retirement, like where you want to take those trips or where you want to eat. Plus do you want to leave money for your kids or grand kids? Also how long do you think you will be retired?
I would say that depending on the answers you give to the above you would want an income of about $1,500 a month (after taxes) over your expenses for taxes, insurance, utilities and the like. More if you want to do more.

I can vouch for that! :P
Good morning all. A couple of units of blood does help. Doesn't bring me up to normal numbers but I don't keel over either.
Good advice on the front load and other high efficiency washers. Ours had a problem and right away teh repair guy said we were using too much detergent by following the instructions on the bottle. His recommendation was no more than a tablespoon of normal detergent or a teaspoon of high efficiency detergent - and in deed to run it with no detergent now and then.
According to Social Security calculator, I should be getting about $2400 per month (in today dollars), plus my spouse (60% of that) for additional $1440, for total or $3840. So what is the big deal? Why all the “financial advisers” are saying that I need over a million to retire comfortably?
Appt. with a Derm guy this afternoon so we shall see.
The itching is much better now.
Since you will be making $46,000. per year thru SS, you effectively have your million dollars now...plus, in the future, in theory, you should get cost of living increases because of inflation.
Congratulations, you are a millionaire !!! Retire, relax and enjoy !

If you did the laundry like the rest of us around here you wouldn’t have to do that. Would you? :shades:

I have a theory about this.
They wouldn’t be able to retire themselves if they didn’t make their money from working stiffs like us. Most of them make more from their client’s money than the client does. That’s why I don’t play the game.
If they were so sharp why didn’t they inform their clients in early 2008 to get out and come back later when the market improved? I think I already answered that question.

This buys you time while they figure out what's up.
Like my esteemed colleague from the Burgh says, if you did your own laundry.....
retirement - yeah, I don't have much put aside at all but have social security and a state pension coming. I just want to make it 2 more years so I can retire rather than let my health dictate that I have to. Between those two things I should make about what I am making now. Since I'll still have minor children social security will toss in a little more so I'd be getting a raise.....
Then, of course, there's the Richard factor....

Hopefully your home will be paid off like ours, so you only have your daily/monthly/yearly overhead to worry about. One thing I've found is how the price of food has gone up since I do all that now. We save in that I eat 90% of my meals home & go out when we want. And also remember travel expenses if you like to travel. With my spinal issues, I don't & won't be traveling much, much to my wife's dismay. But that could change.
And lastly, I've noticed that my cash outlays have gone done at least 75%...don't use much cash & we pay off our credit cards monthly. That's the key sir...do not have any consumer debt...if you can't pay the bill in full monthly...don't buy things, pure & simple!
Sorry this post got so long, but it's been a learning process for us also. Just take things one day at a time...you'll be just fine!

He has to convince you of that so he can make a buck.
Every once in awhile I get a call at work from these hot shot sales guys, it goes something like this, "Hey, this is Marvin, we know that oil futures are going up and there's lots of money to be made out there, if you sign up with me". I say, thanks Marvin, but if you have all of this inside information how come you have to work out of a boiler room calling people all day...why don't you buy oil futures?
Once we had mutual funds from a hot shot sales guy. The market went down and so did our funds, but when we calculated what his commissions were, we realized he did very well, especially because he bought the funds with the most risk and largest commissions - for him.
How much do you need. $46000 a year isn't too bad, many working people live on less. If you need more figure out how much more, then calculate what that would be at 5% interest. So, if you need $5000 more, you should try to save $100,000.....$10,000 more, $200,000. That doesn't allow for inflation, so it would be good to build in a bit of a cushion.

I would have fixed it myself had it not been miserable outside; the 2002 is sitting in one bay of the heated garage awaiting the installation of the new heater box so the only other option would have been to move my wife's X3 outside into the freezing precipitation- an option that would not have been conducive to marital harmony...
