Thanks for your answer, at least I can now clean off the screen.
I like your rules about texting GG.
2 things I noticed recently which weren't nice;
I was at a wedding reception and one guy was texting continually during the meal and during the speaches...his wife looked totally embarassed.
A lady who was in front of me was talking on her cell phone while waiting in line at the bank...when she got up to the teller she asked the teller to wait a minute while she finished her call! :sick:
I won't repeat the story about the cell phone going off during a funeral ceremony.

You wouldn't use a screwdriver to pound in a nail.... would you?
Then why have a dozen back-and-forth text messages (on a silly little keypad) when a one minute call would accomplish the same thing faster/easier/cheaper?
But, if you were planning to meet someone after work for a beer around 6pm, then sending the text "6:15" at 5:30pm while stuck in a meeting is the best way to get the message across.
Bonus - sending a text message via email, because sometimes it's the best tool for the job. (And my PC has a full keyboard. )

If you know the carrier for the person you want to reach, then replace "phonenumber" with their ten digit phone number (no spaces or dashes). If you don't know their carrier, use the shotgun approach and send to all of the above carriers. Some will come back as 'undeliverable', but that's OK. One of them should hit the mark - unless the person has a small carrier.
There.... another tool for the toolbox, at some point it may make sense to use it.
I'm pretty sure LCD is plastic. You are thinking plasma.
In my Samsung manual it specifically says to not use Windex type cleaners or anything with ammonia in it as it will cloud it. I have heard people made this mistake in the past. I don't think Samsung used the name Windex, but the message was still clear.
I use a vacuum cleaner with the soft brush attach on mine. Once in 2 years and i don't think it even needed it. It does not attract dust like the old style TV's.
But I also don't have any ankle-biters reaching up to touch it.
Hope you procrastinated on this one, driver.
If not, gg might be needing to contact a good defense attorney about now. I'd just say read your owners manual. Anything over $100 the golden rule is read the owners manual.
Bought a new laptop for my daughter at Best Buy the other day. Man I love those guys. Got a Toshiba 15.6 screen, 4gb memory, 500gb hard-drive for $449... comes with the Intel Pentium I-3 processor. It's a new model, so hopefully it won't be outdated for another 8 or 9 months.
Kudos to Best Buy who recently opened a new store in my town.
they said the wanted to be "part of the community" and they made a 10,000 dollar donation to our local Baby Corner!!
The Baby Corner is a non profit that provides food and clothing and baby things to people who can't afford to buy them.
Understeer - you see your car going into the tree.

Cell phones and funerals. Some of you have heard this story already, but for those who haven't. My SIL died back in late 01. We are there at the wake and this woman is up at the casket viewing and her cell phone goes off. She answers it! I'm just imagining "Sorry, Debbie can't get up right now."....
I have to go in for two units of blood tomorrow. This is a pain in the neck but beats running out of hemoglobin. I'm low enough right now that when I bend down and get back up I get dizzy as all get out. The transfusion takes all day but once it's done I won't feel that way for a while.
Could be worse. Two years I was in the hospital for that on Christmas Eve. Last year I was in chemo for the morning of Christmas Eve. This year I'll be home!
My best friend's sister is in the hospital in critical condition with something called I.T.P. I had to look it up. It's when the autobodies attack the blood platelets.
Most people have between 150,000 and 450,000 platelets. She has 4000.
The slightest blow to her head could cause fatal internal bleeding. she can't even laugh or move her head quickly.
Steve, get well and home for Christmas!
I have a daughter who is after a new laptop.
Re the ITP, sneezing must be very scary.
Not being able to laugh is just plain cruel. (You better not visit them over the holidays, fezo.. )
So will she be able to grow more platelets with time and medicine, if autobodies can be kept in check?
You better not visit them over the holidays, fezo..
What I have is called myelodysplasia or myeleodysplastic syndrome. My bone marrow makes defective blood. The treatment frequently drives my white cells and platelets down while helping the hemoglobin. I never have a normal reading but it is manageable.
When the platelets are low just testing for blood sugar can be more bloody than planned.
I have a host of issues but I'll be 60 in January. I don't give up easily.
My wife works with about six other women as Educational Assistants at a local middle school. they get together once in awhile.
Less than a week ago, one of these women's husband died and yesterday a SECOND one's husband died suddenly.
My best friend's sister is touch and go, and on Sunday night. my other best friend's mother died in her sleep.
I MAY be taking a trip to So. Cal after Chritmas for her funeral. I just hope I don't have to attend two while I'm there.
Hadn't thought about sneezing...that's scary since she has been told to move her head very slowly.
No you don't Steve. In the years I've known you you have impressed me as one of the toughest guys I've ever known.
Must be the Italian in you!
Now we cringe when the phone rings.
Yeah, it's C655-S5061.
The ad for the computer came out Sunday, I didn't go into the store till Thursday. They were out of stock. The sales assosiate said they were probably sold out that same day. Also mentioning that it was a lot of computer for the money. I told him I saw the computer on the Best Buy web site. He checked and said he would order me one, along with a Netgear wireless router. The thing was, that when I went home and looked at the website, it was noted that the computer was no longer available for online ordering. So they either sold out later that day, or it is available only when ordering at Best Buy. The $449 price was not even the sale price, so
maybe it's just a limited time offer... like the McRib. :confuse:
The other alternative is to use 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water as a solution to clean any sort of glass, plastic or plexiglas.
fezo...just to 2nd what Craig mentioned, having been around these parts for awhile and following your posts, you are one tough hombre. Pre-Happy 60th, too!
Craig, holidays are tough with death hanging in the air. Your friends truly do have my sympathy. I was just speaking to my sister last night thinking how this holiday season is a lot different than last year's when our Mother passed away.
Kirstie.....any news on the status of your accident?
Not to rum it in, but I'll be aboard a cruise ship in about 76 hours from now. :P
lol...usually I am pretty good at getting things done but I had a full day, so thank goodness, I haven't touched the TV yet. What you say makes sense.
Once a friend told me a good way to clean the screen on my old cathode 27 inch tv was to use rubbing alcohol. I touched the screen, felt a charge and the rag I was using went up in flames....almost touched the curtains and I came close to burning down my condo.
After, he told me he had never tried it, but he thought rubbing alcohol made a good cleaner. :sick: :sick: :sick:

GGs in luck, I haven't had time to get to the TV yet. The guy at Best Buy did recommend this $20 a can cleaner, so I did wonder about Windex, but I am glad I didn't get that far.

I do want to follow in dad's footsteps as to teh number of birthdays - he was 90. Six weeks short of 91.
Have fun and enjoy your trip. My wife asked me where we should go next. I said, there are tsunamis in Tailand, 28000 murders in Mexico, jellyfish in Australia, floods or snow all across Europe, flooding and rain in California, drug dealers being run out of town by the army in Rio.
I just want to stay home!

First we have to understand a little bit of background about LCD screens to know why we should be careful when cleaning. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display; which has crystal molecules sandwiched under layers of polarized panels. These panels are usually made of "plastic-like" polymer materials, and like any plastics they can be easily scratched or gouged, even by just your fingernails! That's why cleaning LCDs requires special care while cleaning compared to the old glass CRT monitors!
* What You'll Need
- rubbing alcohol (aka isopropyl alcohol)
- distilled water (not tap water!)
- A soft cloth (lint-free)
* Steps
1. Dilute the rubbing alcohol into a mix with about 50% alcohol and the rest distilled water.
2. Pour this solution into a spray bottle. Old Windex bottles are good as they spray in a mist pattern with just the right amount to get good coverage on your screen. The spray bottles that squirt a single stream tend to drip solution all over the place.
3. Spray the mix onto a soft lint-free cloth. Old t-shirts and microfiber car wash cloths are both good choices. Large cloths are better since it helps to reduce the risk of leaving streaks on the screen from too much pressure.
4. Gently wipe the cloth on the screen in a circular consistent motion. Apply even pressure to the cloth and be careful not to push too hard, or scrape the screen with your fingernails!
* Suggestions
- Costly products that you buy at the "computer screen cleaning" aisle of your local computer store contain the same basic ingredients of alcohol and water! Some even contain other harmful chemicals such as ethylene glycol, which may be ok on older glass CRT monitors, but should NOT be used on LCD screens! Some of the extra chemicals can also be harmful to the environment and to your health.
- Be sure to use Mineral water! Not tap water; you don't want hard mineral spots on your screen.
- Don't use tissue paper; they will leave lint and spots of paper stuck to your monitor. Also they're too thin, risking damage from your fingernails poking through.
- Don't apply too much solution. If you do, just wipe it off with the cloth and use less.
- You can also use lint-free lens wipes from photography stores, but they're thinner so be careful about your fingernails poking through.
- For a cheap ready-made solution from the store, you can also use CD/DVD cleaner, It's already designed to be plastic-safe, and is a simple solution of about 50% isopropyl alcohol.
* Some Precautions
- Don't use Windex or other glass cleaners! These contain ammonia, which is ok for glass, but WILL hurt your LCD screen!
- Try not to use the really cheap paper towels, like the tough brown ones in public washrooms. They can scratch your screen.
- Be sure to shut down your computer and your monitor, then unplug from the wall. This reduces the risk of electric damage in case you spill some of the solution on components.
- Don't drink isopropyl alcohol! It's toxic!
- If you aren't sure, you can test a small corner of the screen first.
Follow the steps and suggestions above, and your trusty LCD monitor should give you years of clean, clear, trouble-free service.

Well I guess I can cross the Caribbean off the list too,
Not sure if that is correct though. On answers.com they say it is the USA!
Another site gave these countries as the tops per capita;

# 2 South Africa: 0.496008 per 1,000 people
# 3 Jamaica: 0.324196 per 1,000 people
# 4 Venezuela: 0.316138 per 1,000 people
# 5 Russia: 0.201534 per 1,000 people
# 6 Mexico: 0.130213 per 1,000 people

I have been to #5,6 and 7!!!!!!!!!!!
Rest of the list is interesting too. USA is #24.

For cleaning cloths, I've used the rule of thumb, if it is not meant for my glasses, I won't use it on my monitors, so no tissues, napkins etc.

One of my best friends in Florida called to tell me that he has terminal cancer. Another close friend had a stroke yesterday. Like you, we hate to answer the phone. i realize that this comes as we get older. It still doesn't make it any easier.
We're leaving for Key West the morning after Christmas. I'll visit my friend who has cancer on the way down there. It will be a tough visit. There are no "get well" wishes with this one.

I tend to think snake is right...she is trying to say "quewe" which seems very English though (the one I got definitely said quewe). It would be more American if she said "you're number 4 in the stampede little doggy".

‘snake’ is correct the message says, “Queue”. I know how you feel (hear). At your age the ears are the second thing that goes.
Just this past July I had a patch put over the hole in my left ear drum that refused to heal. It just got too inconvenient having to put a wax plug in my ear every time I took a shower. So I opted for the surgery. My hearing is down about 10 db in the left ear, according to the doctor, but it’s better than a lifetime of that plug thing. I can afford the slight loss because up until that infection, that started the problem, all the hearings tests that I had taken over the years said I had exceptionally good hearing for someone my age. Mrs. jmonroe would never believe those tests !!!
I suggest a hearing test but not by the guy that rubbed you the wrong way when you had that “other” test.

I must be already on "cruise control", too......
Rum isn't exactly my choice to imbibe with. But, I'm thinking "ship....water...warm...." Not "work".
driver....I'm still thinking that the cleaning cloth you use to clean your LCD/LED will have more to do with scratching or clouding your TV than using a commercial cleaner will. They may have a coating on them that ammonia will interfere with. But, not the screen itself.
I've been using alcohol based cleaners on my laptop LCD screens for years and years with no untoward affect. Alcohol would work too.
But, alcohol is flammable whereas ammonia is not (at least Windex is not).

there are some places and times where you just can't make a phone call. Say, when my daughter has to tell me something from school, or my wife gets caught late in a meeting. On a train, that sort of thing. Plus, you have a record of what they need, since if you call me on my cell odds are I won't be able to write stuff down. And retrieving VM can be worse than a root canal!
The simple answer to the screen questin? Never touch them! I do seem to recall the instructions from a monitor saying to use a lint free, very slightly damp cloth to get surface stuff off. I do know that my laptop (inherited recently from my daughter) is grimey as all get out.
