But, in our district, teachers work 187 days/yr.. When you work 80% of the time, you get 80% of the pay..
Until you try it - you have no idea. I taught for 3 years and 10 months is like working 24 months! I don't think I would want to do it again unless I was really desparate for a job....and that would make for a very poor teacher.
The few kids who are ADD or hyper or on drugs or whatever other problems they might have make it almost impossible to help the kids who could learn. It is a battle every day for many teachers. And let's not forget how many kids are armed these days, and not afraid of authority.

must be one of those modern year round schooling states.
Would never happen in NJ. 180 (the bare minimum) days of school, plus another ~5 in service days (glorified days off), and a few prep days just before the year starts. So, roughly 190 work days per year.
and while they do often have some evening work (grading, etc.) they also work shorter than normal days, with some off periods in there. So I doubt they are really working more overall hours per work week than you would in a normal corporate jobs, and of course, they do have lots of extra vacation time!
I have 3 sister-in-laws and 5 nieces who teach, and they all work about 190 days per year. I can't imagine teachers working 6 days a week, but maybe so. Perhaps Richard can clarify.
Was skimming through the messages and saw how you liked St.Augustines.Just got back from there and thought it was terrific also.Did you by chance go to Rhett's on Hypolita street?Really neat place that just opened 4 months or so ago.My wife and I had a real nice dinner there at the bar and met lots of really nice folks.George McGovern (Dem presidentail candidate from 1972) apparently lives in St Augies 6 months of the year.I could definetly spend lots of winter time in that area!
Was skimming through the messages and saw how you liked St.Augustines.
Yes, we really liked St Augustine. We stayed in a bed and breakfast in the old part of town. Great food and very friendly. Lots of information for taking a walk and you learn about the cities very interesting past. We were there 3 years ago, the year we drove from Canada to Florida and St Augustine made a great place to take a break.
Rhett's wouldn't have been open then, but lots of nice restaurants. A really unique city, lots of history and a nice place to wonder around.
Our house has a 2 car garage, and we use it for its intended purpose - both the CX-7 and the ION fit and there is still room for some storage along the walls. The neighborhood I live in is unique in Colorado in that the houses have no basements, so many people use their garage for storage and the cars stay in the driveway.
Our neighbors across the street from us both have two cars in the garage (one family has a Pilot and a Civic, the other a Corolla and a Yaris).
My dad was a career firefighter, then a fire cause investigator (similar to the Robert DeNiro character in Backdraft). He retired after almost 34 years. But, as a kid, he always worked a second job. First as a finish carpenter, then later as a teacher of first aid and CPR to the Navy and Shell Oil. I remember the First Aid / CPR gig's paid quite a handsome sum - $20/hour! He was flying to the islands off the coast of California or to the oil rigs to do his training.

How is the new CX-7 running?
A lot of the new surveys here have really small garages, and you can barely get the doors open in your car if you park in the garage. Some of these surveys have cars parked on the drives and streets everywhere....looks like a parking lot.
Garages are good, makes your car cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and less chance it will be stolen or vandalized.
One requirement we really wanted was a 2 car garage when we bought this house. Because it is a curved drive we have to back in. Gives us exercise for neck and back muscles.
Of course. I'm so sorry. I was thinking in terms of months. Teachers here report mid-August and leave in mid-June. They're off about 60 days. The instructional days are 180 plus about 15 prep and work days scattered throughout the year. You have 5 days to get things ready and 5 days to close things out at the end. The other 5 days are seminars and in-service work.
We do have some year-round schools. Those students and teachers go 9 weeks with 3 weeks off and then repeat. If a student isn't doing well, he/she takes remediation work during the 3 week vacation period. I personally don't favor the year-round schools. They show less progress in test scores than the traditional setting. Many districts are doing away with them.
Exactly what I was going to suggest. Just tell them that you also made a mistake and undervalued your trade in by $1500. so you will be expecting a check for the $500. difference.
Are they from the Nigerian Motor Vehicle Department?
I needed a good smile this a.m. I got a chuckle out of that.
OP....I don't know what the tax laws are in your state/municipality. But, this sounds like one of those tricks I thought went away a long time ago.
Along the same lines of...."the bank says you must come back in and put more money down on the car".
The tax is what it is. I personally don't think the dealership has any sort of recourse. If there really was some sort of tax fax pas committed by your local BMV, this would be the very first I heard of....especially making the dealership collect for them.
Just curious, I know you were hot on Buicks when you were posting in the Acura forums. Did you finally end up buying one? Regal or LaCrosse? Did you trade in your Infiniti?
"...they also work shorter than normal days, with some off periods in there."
I beg to differ. Teachers report at 7:30 AM and leave at 3:30 PM. That's an eight hour day. Some days are longer---faculty meetings, ball game duty, bus duty, play practice, etc. The vacation time in the summer is WITHOUT PAY. Your ten month salary must last 12 months. In the corporate world, you get at least an hour for lunch. Teachers get 20 minutes---with the exception of elementary teachers. They have to eat with the children. They also must deal with 30 individual personalities all day. High school teachers must deal with over 100 personalities each day. The pressure of maintaining classroom discipline and control is an additional burden, especially these days. While you may think that it is an easy profession, it isn't. It can only be done by a special few who have been called to impart knowledge to others. Needless to say, there are some weak teachers. The majority are extremely hard working and dedicated. Try substituting for a couple of days in one of your schools. If you survive, we'll talk about it.
I had to find the phone number of my BMW dealers service number this morning - a light bulb is out and I don't know which one (too lazy to look) so I called and they said just bring it in no appointment necessary...which is good. I am sure it will be covered under the 4 year warranty.
It did surprise me is the car salesmen there are now called "New Car Sales Specialist"! I have heard of "advisors" and "representatives" but that is the first time I noticed that title. What's next, "VIP of Car Sales PHD"?
They also must deal with 30 individual personalities all day. High school teachers must deal with over 100 personalities each day.
I agree with everything you said. I did it for 3 and a half years and it was brutal. Try to control 30 kids all day....and very little contact with real human adults.
A good point you made too, and people forget is teachers are paid for 10 months of work, not 12. Try saving enough to get through the 2 months when you don't have an income coming in.
The #1 greatest fear people have is standing in front of a group of people and having to talk. Teachers do that every day, all day long.
I found I was teaching about 6 hours a day, and it would take a few hours to prepare lessons for that amount of time. You don't just go in and fake it, you have to actually be doing things that are worthwhile. It might get easier if you taught the same thing every year, but that seldom happens....either you get a new class or you have to refresh your courses to keep up....it isn't as easy as it sounds.
So far, so good. Wife took it to Colorado Springs over the weekend - our thoughts below:
1) only one temp setting for seat heaters - the VUE had 3 2) however, the seat heaters don't have to be turned on every time 3) filled in up Saturday evening - put 91 into it and it cost $57 ($3.599/gal) 4) wife likes the zippy feeling of the turbo 4 5) the weathertech liners arrived over the weekend - nice fit and look. May look at getting rear mats and one for the rear cargo area as well
A lot of the new surveys here have really small garages, and you can barely get the doors open in your car if you park in the garage.
Given that our house didn't have a basement, the builder created 'oversized' garages with about 24" of space on either side of the garage door, plus a small alcove where we put the lawn mower and a second fridge.
Garages are good, makes your car cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and less chance it will be stolen or vandalized.
Agreed. The MINI spends most of its time parked on the street - unless the weather is bad, when the MINI goes into the garage and the ION goes outside.
A lot of the new surveys here have really small garages, and you can barely get the doors open in your car if you park in the garage.
Small garages are a pet peeve of mine and so is the size of the doors. Another pet peeve are bathrooms and powder rooms with 24 inch doors. I can fit through a 24 inch door but what law says they have to be that small?
Every house we have owned (on our 4th now) has had a 2 car garage. The first had 2 single 9 foot wide doors, no problem with that size. The second, even though it was a fairly large house in comparison, had 2 single 8 foot wide doors. I didn’t particularly like that but the house had too many pluses to rule it out because of that, still no problem. The third house was the one we built in SC and I customized the size of that garage before ‘you know who’ ate up all the money on the house itself. I also had it built with 30 inch doors for all of the bathrooms because of my pet peeve. That house had a 20 foot wide single door, still no problem. Back to the Burgh and the house we are in now has a single 16 foot wide door, PROBLEM. This is the garage that ‘you know who’ whacked the passenger mirror I moaned about on the ’06 Sonata that was traded in on the Genny.
While the garage we have now is smaller, by a good bit, than the one in SC, it would have had plenty of room to get in and out of if I didn’t try to shoe horn in too many tools and stuff like that. Still, once you’re in the car, there is no reason to whack a mirror while backing out.

A bit off topic here guys but need some advice. Just got back with girl #2, she drives the '08 Accent, and noticed that she's only driven about 2k miles since her last oil change done on August 12th of 2010. She only does around town driving with sometimes only driving 4 miles per day to go to campus. Hasn't been on the xpressway in over 1 1/2 years, so nothing has been blown out of the engine. My thought is to just go ahead and do it now even though it hasn't been that long since the last one. But I really think I should also take it out and open her up a bit too. Wife thinks I should wait on the oil change. Please give me your thoughts on both questions...the oil change & the taking it out on the highway for an extended drive. The Sandman  :shades:

I would certainly change the oil. It has been a good while (over six months) and the oil can pick up moisture etc. I would also consider taking it for a long run and "stretch its legs" a bit. I don't know if newer cars really need this done but I always feel its a good thing to rev the engine every so often. It certainly can't hurt. Heck with it being winter, and only driving 4 miles a day that thing doesnt' even get up to operating temperature.
Please give me your thoughts on both questions...the oil change & the taking it out on the highway for an extended drive.
As Tic and Fezo say, it would be best to change the oil. That 4 miles a day is harder on the car than anything. One website said this, and I think it a good guide;
The average oil change recommendation we see on new cars is around five months or 5,000 miles — some more, some less; refer to your owner’s manual and try not to exceed the outlined date or mileage to keep your engine healthy.
A run on the highway is always good. I know things are tight but it is better to do a little routine maintenance than run into bigger problems.
Please give me your thoughts on both questions...the oil change & the taking it out on the highway for an extended drive.
I’ll throw in my thoughts about this too.
I’m a stickler for changing oil; not only for the miles but for its age. Back in the 70’s and 80’s I worked less than 4 miles from my house and when I bought my second house I was less than 2 miles to the parking lot. Obviously I didn’t mile up a car by going to work. However, I always changed the oil at the 3 month interval or sooner and I wasn’t doing the car as much of a favor as you’d think since it didn’t get warmed up from the drive to and from work.
I know you can’t do the work yourself but when I do oil changes to this day I run the car for at least 7/8 miles AFTER the car is at operating temp. Yeah, it’s hot when the oil first starts to drain and it tickles my hand for a second or two while I’m getting the drain plug out but I don’t believe in cold oil changes. This is another reason why I do it myself because I don’t want it sitting in the lot cooling off before it goes on the rack.
I’d suggest that you line up a shop that can put the car on the rack as soon as you get it there while the oil is nice and hot from driving it around for a few miles.

I didn't realize Mazdas had turbos. That makes a huge difference in a 4 cylinder car, adds a lot of enjoyment but is still economical.
I think you will enjoy your Mazda even more now that gas prices are going up. My 3 Series gets about 26 mpg and the X3 got around 20, so gas is costing me about 30% less than it would have. It doesn't matter that much, but it is still a nice feeling as gas is reaching $4 a gallon (it feels like $2.80 compared to the X3).
I brought a baby gift into my old store a few days ago for one of our receptionists and had a great time chatting with my old co-workers. Lots of handshakes and hugs!
A couple of the guys had private conversations with me letting me know how the overall "fun factor" has continued to go downhill. I didn't see a lot of happy people. I tried a couple of pep talks but when I walked out, I realized that I was very lucky to have been able to retire as early as I did.
Reading the " Prices Paid" Forums is another activity that reminds me of the frantic zeal people will put themselves through to save a lousy dollar. I'm not talking about hundreds of dollars etiher. They will sell out a salesperson who spent hours with them for a lousy fifty bucks!
In the corporate world, you get at least an hour for lunch.
Whoa, whoa. Let's not get crazy here. Just as some folks have misconceptions about the teaching profession, you have a misconception about the modern corporate world. In my 15 years as an editor, I can tell you that "at least an hour lunch" is simply not true. On average, I might get to go out to lunch once every 2 months, and that is typically to discuss business. All other days are ZERO minutes lunch, where it is a quick mouthful of food periodically while working at desk. An 8-hour day is also a rarity. A typical week is five 9-hour days and usually a couple of hours on the weekend. 60-hour weeks are not uncommon around here.

Reading the " Prices Paid" Forums is another activity...
I was looking at a couple "Prices Paid" forums the other day. Very little useful information. Unless you're buying a Honda or Toyota, there just aren't very many posts on how much people are paying.
I looked at the Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima forums (two popular cars that are selling well), and there just wasn't much action. One troll in one, can't remember, saying he paid about 3 grand less than a guy who was said to have gotten a good deal. He was pretty much ignored.
I used to have to deal with people who thought all of the so called Prices Paid numbers were real. Soemtimes they would take a number that never happened and actually want me to beat it!
It wasn't so bad if they came in and just made their low offer but many times, they wold spend several hours asking questions and driving cars only to leave to do their "research".
Of course, you would THINK that if they saw a number way below what others were reporting they wold assume it was bogus. Some did but others didn't.
Will take it on Thursday early morning, as she's staying here until Saturday, and then get it on the roadway for a nice drive. I thought it was due, so thanks y'all for reconfirming my gut instinct! We also still have a free oil change from when we bought, so it'll be a freebie too! Freebie's never ever hurt & it's great especially now with the paycheck stopping at the end of the month.

new car bought out of state-- and they needed to register it in my state-- i traded in a car which was appx 20k for the trade and bought a new one for 27k, the agreement was for me to pay my state tax on the difference of 7k.they are now complaining to me that they paid the full tax on 27k to get my registration (i was transferring it from old car to new one) and they are out over 1k in the difference. But they didnt realize the problem for over 2 mths..

The vacation time in the summer is WITHOUT PAY. Your ten month salary must last 12 months.
There is a website that has listed the salaries of every public school teacher in this state. We did a sampling of them and for full time teachers most made more in those 10 months than I make in a year.

9 hour days? You were lucky. There were times when I worked 12-13 hours (as a salaried emplyee) then took the train home with my boss as we did work riding home on that train.
I don't miss those days. Now I have a really good where there is not a lot of overtime and we get paid for it.

sween...sounds like the dealer needs to take the issue up with the local BMV. I know in my state (OH) you only pay tax on the difference between the new car and the trade-in. If your state is the same, the dealer has no beef. They're trying to squeeze you. In either case, it's crazy that they're trying to do this 2 mos after the fact.
Was never a big fan of Buicks. Nothing wrong with them, just not my personal cup of tea (unless we're talking about a Grand National).
A friend of mine just bought one (not a turbo, though). GM has taken the brand a pretty far ways. It's a fairly decent car. Still not to my liking, but it fits my friend perfectly.
Same thing in NJ for the sales tax - it''s on the difference between the trade in and the sales price.
I find it difficult to believe a dealer doesn't know the sales tax laws for his area. I would certainly demand to see all paperwork concerning this mystery money before they'd see a nickle of mine. If that all turned out to be legit I still think that it would be a negotiable item.

I would run your car on the highway for a few miles just to make sure the oil is at normal temp. It will help burn off some of those contaminants before having the new oil put in. Got 'The Works' (Oil /Filter change, Tire rotation, brake check, etc) done on my Wife's Escape today. Price started out as $66. Works Coupon, -$17, Credit for free oil change (other program) -$36 (?!!), $10 Mail in Rebate, net cost $3. :shades: Saw some nice new Fords walking the lot while waiting.

I'm sure you work hard. No misconception here. I was in the corporate world once---head of credit card division for a major oil company. I never took lunch---some took a two hour lunch. As in all professions, there are the workers and there are the slackers. If my parents ever gave me anything, it was the work ethic---a good, hard day's work for your wage. At least you earn your night's rest.
I'm sure that you are an excellent CPA, but the fact that you make less than a teacher doesn't mean that teachers are overly paid. If your clients "talk back" or curse you under their breath, you don't have to do their tax returns. A teacher must keep teachng that child, hoping for a positive outcome.
In corporate world, you do get a lunch break. You just don't get paid for it anymore! so say 8:30 - 5 is an 8 hour day with 1/2 hour for lunch.
I have the same issue with Oil change intervals. I have alternated between long commute (600 miles/week average) and being home FT. Last oil change on my accord was 4/1/2010. I just had it done last week (roughly 3/1) and it had not quite ticked over 4K miles since then.
I had very few chances to get it out on a real highway run. since 1/1, I may not have been more than 10 miles from home with it!
I would not go a full year, and probably should have done it sooner, but oh well.
In 2 weeks, my son will be home on college break with the TL. That had it's last service in May I think. But, still maybe 3K since then? At least that gets highway miles (500 mile RT from school, all highway). The accord gets a ton of short hops, and maybe 80-100 miles/week.
I probably will take the Acura in while it is here to get the oil done, and wait until the summer to get a few other items done on it.
For the last couple of decades, I've telecommuted. In some ways, that's good. In some ways not so much. No one is around to distract me. I find that I probably work more hours working from my home office than I would in a regular office, but a fairly large margin. For example, I was working on some contracts at 11:00 p.m. last night. If it's there, and it needs to be done, I do it, no matter the amount of hours it takes, or time of day.
Personally, I believe teachers are way underpaid (at least the good ones). Here in Cincinnati, the voters decided to spend a 1/2 billion dollars on new sports stadiums (one of baseball, one for football) via a sales tax hike. The football franchise owner is a real crumudgeon and is only conerned about money. He will squeeze the last nickel out of the taxpayers if given the opportunity. Then again, his Father (the late, great Paul Brown) gave him the team. He's really not had to work for anything. Fortunately, I live outside of the county and don't HAVE TO spend money in Cincinnati.
I thought that money would have been much better spent on schools. But, that wasn't an option.

It did surprise me is the car salesmen there are now called "New Car Sales Specialist"! I have heard of "advisors" and "representatives" but that is the first time I noticed that title. What's next, "VIP of Car Sales PHD"?

1) only one temp setting for seat heaters - the VUE had 3
2) however, the seat heaters don't have to be turned on every time
3) filled in up Saturday evening - put 91 into it and it cost $57 ($3.599/gal)
4) wife likes the zippy feeling of the turbo 4
5) the weathertech liners arrived over the weekend - nice fit and look.

They have that so many miles or six months for a reason. The car will thank you for it.
As Tic and Fezo say, it would be best to change the oil. That 4 miles a day is harder on the car than anything.
One website said this, and I think it a good guide;

LOL. Now that's funny! :P
Please give me your thoughts on both questions
7 months? I 'd probably have changed it at 6, but should be fine. Would probably run it on the expressway for about a half an hour as well.
Maybe he should have said "government employees".

It wasn't so bad if they came in and just made their low offer but many times, they wold spend several hours asking questions and driving cars only to leave to do their "research".
Of course, you would THINK that if they saw a number way below what others were reporting they wold assume it was bogus. Some did but others didn't.
Again everyone, thanks for the positive confirmation on my question...you guys do rock!!

There is a website that has listed the salaries of every public school teacher in this state. We did a sampling of them and for full time teachers most made more in those 10 months than I make in a year.

I find it difficult to believe a dealer doesn't know the sales tax laws for his area. I would certainly demand to see all paperwork concerning this mystery money before they'd see a nickle of mine. If that all turned out to be legit I still think that it would be a negotiable item.
Would you prefer to teach school.......for a 20% increase in pay?

I tip my hat to all teachers.
